HERE & THERE
How about some really good news to start off this abbreviated "Here & There" section? (I had to cut this section short since this is a "double issue" and there is so much more news to report.)

Bob Egan has bounced back from the sudden closing of his COSMOPOLITAN ROOM in New Hope and has resumed his productions at STOCKTON INN tonight with the regular BOB'S BIG MONDAY SHOWCASE. Check out the article above in the "Today's Top Stories" section, including news of additional shows already schedule for the room.

And another bit of great news (also highlighted in the Top Stories" section) is the announcement of the final cast lineup of Scott Siegel's BROADWAY UNPLUGGED show at THE TOWN HALL tonight. This is the show where singers from Broadway and cabaret perform entirely without microphones and is one of the most exciting events of all the Siegel productions. My friend Daniel and I have been to the past shows, and eagerly look forward to attending tonight's show - curtain time is 8:00 pm. As of yesterday there were still some good seats left, but with the announcement this morning that the strike that has closed 27 Broadway theaters will continue at least through the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, the remaining tickets may sell out fast to theater fans eager to fulfill their cravings for showtunes. I hope to see many of my cabaret friends at the show tonight.

Another thing closed through the Thanksgiving holiday weekend is CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE - there will be no newsletter on Thursday this week - next issue will be on Monday November 26th. Hence we have included many more news items in this issue than usual, including information on shows this weekend that would normally be published in the MIDWEEK issue.

Things apparently really heated up with the strike talks between the producers and the stagehand unions that were restarted over the weekend, and it appears that now there is a split between the national union and the local union - a compromise apparently was reached by the national union but the local union leadership would have none of it and from what I hear, walked out (the union said the producers walked out). The stagehands are reportedly making $150,000 per year plus bonus payment for overtime. The producers have had a banner year in profits and reportedly have a $20 million "war chest" to tide them over through a strike. The folks getting hit - and hit hard are the performers in the chorus and the dancers, innocent victims in this tug of war between union and producers. Also hurt have been the merchants, restaurants and bars and their employees in the theater district. Hopefully cooler heads will prevail and negotiations will resume and the lights will go back on on Broadway early next week.

LA-based cabaret/recording star Shawn Ryan is expanding his horizons as well as his acting chops. Now as a man, playing the role of a woman pretending to be a man. In a show scheduled for Friday December 7th on ABC's "Women's Murder Club" Shawn makes his network dramatic debut playing the part of an "aggressive narcoleptic lesbian drag king!" Apparently someone saw a clip of Shawn's performance in drag a few years back ay LE CHAT NOIR in New Orleans, and called his agent to arrange an audition for a small role as a female impersonator in an episode of the show. The audition went well, but Shawn didn't get the part - not that part at least. As the producer said, "it was easier to find a man who could pass as a lesbian who could pass as a man, than find a lesbian who could actually pass as a man." Catch the show for the whole story - it has a rather intricate plot much too involved for me to explain to you here.

Just a "coda" to the DSL problems that plagued me last week - the newsletter was finally sent out around 4:30 pm - the DSL line came back exactly at 4:00 pm but when I opened my mail reader program over 6000 e-mails downloaded. It took nearly 1/2 hour for them all to come in, and after sending out the 2500 newsletters, I spent another two or three hours untangling the mass of messages (only about 100 were non-spam). In deleting 5900 e-mails I am quite certain that one or two more legitimate messages were deleted in error, so if you don't get a response in a few days (I have over 40 messages and inquiries still to answer) resend your note. If you sent a press release for an event after December 9th it may not be in this issue - check next Monday if it is posted there.

In addition, the Message Board, which has a limit of 150 messages, was completely filled with spam items as well. Over 70 had to be deleted by hand so that the board could accept new postings. Actually the board clogs up every night - my morning routine is to have my first cup of coffee while deleting messages. Everyone's time is being wasted - the spammers spend all their time posting messages that will never be seen, and I have to spend hours a day (I delete messages about every two hours when the board is filled again) and many legitimate posters try to make posting when the board is jammed, wasting their time. The solution of course is to make everyone who wants to post something register and use a password, but I have staunchly refused to go that route.

There are plenty of banner slots open for December if you want to advertise your holiday show or CD or other cabaret related items. Unfortunately the small home-page side bar banners are nearly sold out through Christmas - last year we had a lot of slots open and were offering special deals to sell the squares, perfect for promoting a CD. Ads and banners of all other sizes, prices and shapes are available on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website - costing from as little as $37 per week (3 week regular size banner) to our super special "2000 page" super-sidebar ads running $125 per week (price drops to $100 per week after the first 2 weeks). There is an advertising plan available to meet just about any budget, and members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE get discounts and rebates as well - SILVER members get $20 off their first banner in a membership year and GOLD members a 20% discount on all ads in a membership year (discounts/rebates do not apply to the $25 sidebar ads). Your ad could be seen up to 6000 times a day - by folks interested in cabaret. And an ad on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website means your event or CD is mentioned in every issue of the newsletter, sent out twice a week to 2500 (note we dropped the "nearly") subscribers as long as the ad or banner is running. As I say, it is the ad program that keeps on giving!

We're still looking a sponsor for John Hoglund's AFTER DARK section and and one slot is available right now for Carla Gordon's HEARTLAND CABARET section on the website. Sponsorship is via special exclusive SUPER SIDE-BAR ads on these pages. Click on the button marked BANNER INFO at the top of every page on the website for details. Proceeds from the ads go to support these sections.

I was back at MAMA'S on Saturday night and ran into the new owner once more and now have even more news: When renovations are complete, MAMA'S will be able to present more cabaret shows - two shows at the same time again. A few years back the fire department decided that since the patrons in the back cabaret room would have to pass through the front cabaret room to reach one of the exits in case of emergency, only one room could be used at a time, cutting the clubs schedule nearly in half. So now the office area, at the back of the piano bar section, will be converted to a second cabaret room (slightly smaller than the other back cabaret space) and the current front cabaret room will be converted to a lounge area. They are already busy renovating the basement of the club into office space. And all construction and renovation is planned to have a minimum impact on shows and piano bar activities.

Can you believe? I need only two more memberships to reach the 400 mark! There have to be at least two folks out there who will join today to relieve my tension and anxiety. Actually there are 5 subscribers who sent me e-mails the past two weeks promising to "mail in a check" but only one has followed through so far - member number 397. A simple SILVER membership still costs only $20 - it has been $20 since the membership program started in 2001. Click on the button marked JOIN HERE at the top of every page on the website - if you object to "flash" style buttons or live in a third-world country where the computers are not powerful enough to display flash images, there is a blue jpg button just above the line that says LATEST ISSUES OF THE NEWSLETTER that will take you to the same page on the website detailing all the levels and benefits of membership. Craig Coursey has promised to buy me a drink when we hit 400. Not to worry, he can easily afford it.

No room in this issue for "reviews" but I did see Jose Luis' show last night, with special guest Fatima, at the new MUSIC BOX SHOWROOM at the BROADWAY BABY BISTRO & PIANO LOUNGE at 7:00 pm and really enjoyed the show. The club is just opened and they are doing their best to get all the kinks and wrinkles out before it officially opens in a few weeks. Daniel and I, in addition to our drinks, enjoyed the "sampler" plate - Nathan's Hot Dog, White Castle Burgers, Chicken Wings and fries - cost about $10.

Other shows seen since Thursday: Christine Pedi at the METROPOLITAN ROOM on Friday (not to be missed), Karen Mack & Michael Holland's GASHOLE HOLO-O-MATIC at THE DUPLEX on Saturday (I've missed them - I shall return - loads of fun), and POOR BABY BREE last night at DON'T TELL MAMA (a truly unique cabaret experience). Check each club's schedule for upcoming dates.

Now on to the news - this is our second largest issue ever, so read on carefully, since you won't want to miss out on any event news.

See you after the holiday - next Monday.

NOW FOR SOME NEWS ABOUT CABARET
In an effort to cut down on "repeated" events, except for announcements of programs offered by cabaret membership organizations, and shows where guests change regularly, cabaret news items will usually appear just once in the newsletter in abbreviated form and linked to a full article on the CABARET NEWS page of the appropriate location on the website. Events advertised on the website will be mentioned in every issue, and events offering discounts to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE are mentioned in every MIDWEEK issue.

ABOUT CABARET NEWS IN THE NEWSLETTER, BLOG AND WEBSITES
How do you get an item posted in the CABARET NEWS section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website and in the newsletter? It is really quite simple.

Just e-mail me a press release of at least four or five paragraphs, giving the complete information on your show, CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available. Please send me complete information - and do not merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference to a website. By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from the press releases I receive before using the item on my website or in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the four or more paragraphs. If you don't have a press release, just click here: http://www.svhamstra.com/PressRelease1.shtml and fill out the information as completely as possible - or use the items asked for as a guide to the information I need.

Just send in your press release or listings request in simple txt format if possible (the format I write these issues in and use for the website), and send any photos as attachments, not imbedded within the e-mail. And, please, please don't send, instead of a press release, one of those e-mails with all those annoying html links (with multi-columns, embedded photos, distracting backgrounds, etc.) Do not send simply a .jpg of your post card. Do not send us one of those "e-vite" things that require us to "click to open" and lead to a web page somewhere. I never open them! The more information the better - it is easier for me to trim the release than to hunt and google websites for more information.

We usually run articles about 2 to 3 weeks before event date if possible so it is wisest to send your release about 4 weeks in advance. Because of the large number of items received, we can only use news of event just once, so we try not to get too far ahead in the news. There are a few exceptions to the "just once" rule:

+++ If the event is advertised on the website it will be repeated in every issue of the newsletter

+++ If the event offers a discount to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE it will be included in each MID-WEEK issue of the newsletter.

+++ Major benefits where ALL proceeds are given to the charity named will be mentioned in every issue as well as major cabaret events like cabaret festivals and galas.

+++ We also include at least once each week those regular (monthly, weekly, etc.) events with guests who change each performance, like SETH'S BROADWAY CHATTERBOX, BOB EGAN'S MONDAY SHOWCASE and the like.

IT'S TIME TO GO
At the top of this newsletter I promised that you would read things in this issue you will not find published anywhere else. Did I keep my promise?

I realize that there is probably far more information here than you might be able to digest in one reading, but please keep in mind that for the performers mentioned, CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE is one of the few publications that spread the word about their shows and performances. To them, that item about their show is most important, and the fact that every issue published is also posted on my website and on the blog means two additional places where the show information can be found by fans and search engines (Google, etc.) alike. Your banner ads and membership donations make this all possible.

One more reminder - all current memberships for CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE expired on Thursday, July 5th 2007. You can renew (or get a new) membership almost instantly on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.svhamstra.com/ ), using a credit card. Just click on the button at the top of every page of the website marked JOIN HERE. Or you can mail your check, made out simply to Stu Hamstra to 676A Ninth Avenue #120, New York, NY 10036. Memberships are available at several levels with varying benefits. Basic membership (which can be upgraded at any time with full credit) is $20 (SILVER). You membership dollars support the website, the newsletter, the blog and other activities of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE. Support CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE as it promotes the art and artists of cabaret.

And that is just about the way it was.

Hugs & Stuff,

STU
