HERE & THERE
I hope everyone out there had a great Thanksgiving day - even folks from lands near and far who don't celebrate the same day we do - or miss out on this special annual day of feast and thanks. It was a beautiful sunny, breezy day here in NYC. Daniel and I discussed much of the day by text message where we would meet to dine - and we ended up meeting in Jackson Heights for a "Columbian-style" Thanksgiving dinner at one of our favorite (and inexpensive) dining spots. Now two things I must remember for next year: don't feast after 10:00 pm, and when you dine at a Columbian restaurant you should not attempt to "clean your plate!" They always serve about 30% more than you expect and charge about 30% less than you would pay elsewhere. I can't believe I ate the whole thing!

What better way to start the official holiday season than to awake this morning and see a light dusting of snow on the cars, streets and rooftops below! It was all over in a short time as the outside temperatures rose and the snow flurries turned to rain, but for a few minutes the area outside my window looked like a department store holiday window display. This will be my first holiday season back in Manhattan in many years, and I intend to make the most of it - even possibly visiting the tree in Rockefeller Center, which will be going up soon. I usually avoid all the hubbub in that area, but last weekend I was meeting Daniel up near Macy's Department Store (he works in that area) and "caught the holiday spirit." Actually, it more accurately caught me - I could hardly exit the subway at 34th & Broadway, the crowds had packed the sidewalk from building to curb!

To my joy (and in a way surprise) our 400th member was added to our list of 2007-2008 CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE members last week Friday morning (November 23rd). The count was holding at 399 for a few days and with the holidays last weekend, the mail had slowed to a trickle (even the spam mail!). But on Friday I was emptying my briefcase and stuck on the bottom was an envelope that apparently had been there since the 16th or 17th (it was postmarked the 15th of November and mailed in NYC). Somehow it was overlooked. (Three more members joined this morning!)

So congratulations, Steven Boldt, of the Bronx, on becoming our 400th member. Cynthia Crane had given me 2 copies of her latest CD "If I Knew Now (what I knew then)" - one personally and one by mail. When I reminded her, she said to give one as a prize or premium. So, as soon as this issue goes out, I will walk over to the post office and the CD will be on its way to our newest member. I will also mail out the 10 latest membership cards - I print and mail them in batches of 10. Mr. Boldt is a "newbie" - never having joined in previous years. Welcome aboard!

And some time in the next few days I expect to find myself at happy hour at DON'T TELL MAMA where Craig Coursey hangs out (when he isn't on holiday with family in Grand Rapids) and I can collect my own prize - that cocktail he promised me when we reached 400 members.

I have one more goal to reach - to surpass 427 members. That's the total membership we had in 2004. For the past two years we had around 350 members. Back in 2004 I had a lot of deals going on to boost membership: spouse or partner membership at 1/2 price, 1-day $5 PayPal discounts, etc. This year I am going to try for 430 by Christmas without any special deals. Fingers crossed.

Thank to all 400 members for your support!

Why not join today and help us hit that 430 member mark? A simple SILVER membership still costs only $20 - in our own move to counter inflation, it has been $20 since the membership program started in 2001. And you readers overseas and in Canada: With the dollar sinking to a new low, the membership cost is a real bargain! Click on the "flash" button marked JOIN HERE at the top of every page on the website - if you object to "flash" style buttons or live in a third-world country where the computers are not powerful enough to display flash images, just slide down the page and there is a blue jpg button just above the line that says LATEST ISSUES OF THE NEWSLETTER that will take you to the same page on the website detailing all the levels and benefits of membership. If we hit 430 by Christmas, I'll buy Craig Coursey a drink! (I really don't know what it is he drinks, since it is always in a paper bag).

For those folks who missed catching the BROADWAY UNPLUGGED! show last Monday night at THE TOWN HALL, all I can say is you missed another great night of song and story at this fabled landmark venue. Both Daniel and I were ecstatic by "half-time" and overcome by the end of the performances. This show has always been our favorite of all Scott Siegel's productions and this year's show was even better than ever! Quite honestly (as if you did not already know this) I am not a regular attendee of Broadway musical theater. I can't afford it, for one, and I much prefer true "live" entertainment events - not carefully timed and scripted events. So it is a special treat to see stars from Broadway perform "live" - and so many really special and well known stars as well. Somehow Scott is able to always gather the "cream" of the Broadway and off-Broadway performers. And not just live, but without microphones! Pure, honest vocals! And for folks out there that think today's crop of young vocalists can't measure up to the great musical theater stars of the past who did not have the advantage of today's sound systems, you must not have ever attended a BROADWAY UNPLUGGED! show.

To single out any one performer would not be fair - they were all that good, and all called back for a second bow. A personal treat for me was to see Lorinda Lisitza on stage in a big hall, performing up a storm. She is a good friend, and one of the many talented cabaret/theater performers that Scott & Co. call on regularly to spice up his shows. Virtually every performance "stopped the show." As the evening progressed we were all thrilled by the bounty of talent presented. And in spite of an obvious cold, once again the brilliance and cleverness of Mr. Siegel's writing was on display. Bravo - and Brava to Barbara Siegel (just recovering from a bad cold) who seemed to be everywhere before the show, during intermission, and after the show, checking to make sure everyone was having a great time.

Another person who knows how to put a show together and make sure everyone has a good time is Sue Matsuki, who hosted her own birthday shows at THE LAURIE BEECHMAN on Tuesday the 20th. I said shows, because there were two shows - the 7:00 pm show "sold out" and the 9:00 pm show was nearly "sold out." One could not accurately say "sold" because there was no cover charge - just plenty of good fun, great music and exciting guests. For me, it is always a special treat to see Ms. Matsuki perform - she is one of the folks that "I knew when." Vocally she is among the top jazz vocalist in town, and as a performer she has come to take her place among the best. And I love the way she is always in control on stage. I have seen far too many shows lately where it seems that the performer is overcome by the musicians - letting them get away with "showing off" and "upstaging" time and again. Although surrounded by some of the best jazz musicians around (her pianist/arranger Gregory Toroian is unsurpassed, not just at the keyboard, but also with his dedication to bring out the best in a singer through his performance), Sue is always at the center of the show - precisely where every artist should be. So Brava to Sue - and a big happy birthday too! Now I ask, who ate all the cupcakes? By the time the show was over they were gone!

By the way, you can catch Sue (but no cupcakes) when she and Edd Clark present their Holiday/CD Release Show at THE DUPLEX for four performances starting on the 1st of December - details in the dated listing below.

Speaking of birthdays, there are two important ones (at least to cabaret folks) taking place this week: David Pellegrene is celebrating his 29th Birthday (he says he will celebrate being 29 every year until he gets it right) on Thursday the 29th from 7:00 pm until the bar runs out of the bubbly at UNCLE CHARLIE'S (no cover) and Jenna Esposito celebrates her 19th (well that's how old she looks to me) at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM on Saturday at 10:00 pm (her guest performer list includes Joe Bachana, Hector Coris, Scott Coulter, Kelly Esposito-Broelmann, David Goldman, Rob Langeder, Sue Matsuki, Miles Phillips, Michael Quinn, Shaynee Rainbolt, Ben Rauch, Gretchen Reinhagen, Maureen Taylor and Lennie Watts - $20 cover - $15 for CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE members). Details on those dates in the listings below.

It looks like, unless a lot of folks get involved, singer/musician/record producer (and old pal) Wayne Moore will be arrested on December 5th. We hear that a police car is going to his house and the officer will cart him away to "jail" where he will have to pay his bail - set at $1950 - with donations to the Muscular Dystrophy Association. If you have a spare $25 or $50 (or more!) you can "free" Wayne and help a very worthy cause at the same time. You can send a check (made out to MDA) directly to him at P.O. Box 691082, West Hollywood, CA 90069-1082 or to pay by credit card, (click on this link to get to his special page on the MDA website: https://www.mdaevent.org/ParticipantInfo.aspx?j=ad2bd3db-4e61-4719-ad9d-5a685788c45d

$25 pays for a single flu shot. Research into that elusive cure costs $85 a minute. A new wheelchair costs $2000. MDA serves people with neuromuscular disease by providing clinics, support groups, assistance with the purchase and repair of wheelchairs, braces and communication devices, and summer camp for kids. MDA also funds research grants to help find treatments and cures for some 43 neuromuscular diseases that affect people of all ages, right here in our community. 74% of every dollar goes directly to these programs with the remainder being used for administration and publicity. So help "spring" Wayne - and help a good cause at the same time!

If you want to make sure your message is seen by just about everyone in cabaret, post it on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE message board (just click on the button at the top of very page marked MESSAGE BOARD). And just to let you know, sponsorship of the board - an exclusive banner (no other ads appear on this page) - is available at the end of the year. Click on the button marked BANNER INFO for information.

There are plenty of other banner slots open for December if you want to advertise your holiday show or CD or other cabaret related items. Unfortunately the small home-page side bar banners are nearly sold out through Christmas - last year we had a lot of slots open and were offering special deals to sell the squares, perfect for promoting a CD. Ads and banners of all other sizes, prices and shapes are available on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website - costing from as little as $37 per week (3 week regular size banner) to our super special "2000 page" super-sidebar ads running $125 per week (price drops to $100 per week after the first 2 weeks).

There is an advertising plan available to meet just about any budget, and members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE get discounts and rebates as well - SILVER members get $20 off their first banner in a membership year and GOLD members a 20% discount on all ads in a membership year (discounts/rebates do not apply to the $25 sidebar ads). Your ad could be seen up to 6000 times a day - by folks interested in cabaret. And an ad on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website means your event or CD is mentioned in every issue of the newsletter, sent out twice a week to 2500 (note we dropped the "nearly") subscribers as long as the ad or banner is running. As I say, it is the ad program that keeps on giving!

We're still looking a sponsor for John Hoglund's AFTER DARK section and and one slot is available right now for Carla Gordon's HEARTLAND CABARET section on the website. Sponsorship is via special exclusive SUPER SIDE-BAR ads on these pages. Click on the button marked BANNER INFO at the top of every page on the website for details. Proceeds from the ads go to support these sections.

Just to clear up one item in last week Monday's issue regarding DON'T TELL MAMA - I mentioned that a new second cabaret room was being created at the back of the piano bar area so that the club could have two shows going at the same time as before. Some folks read the item to mean that there was only one exit to the back cabaret room, through the front cabaret room. That is not the case at all - there always has been two exits from both rooms, and even a third exit from the back cabaret room that is off the left of the stage. The problem the fire department had was that one of the main exits went from the back room through the front room. That is what is being corrected.

Well, this issue is going out a little late - I just had so much news to include, and so many items HERE & THERE wise, we are over an hour late! So now to a nap and then some errands and then back to work. Last week was either sparse on cabaret events or so very cold I dared not venture out (Thanksgiving day the temperature dropped from the high sixties in the afternoon to below thirty in just a few hours!) This week I have to make up for it!

Until Thursday then.

NOW FOR SOME NEWS ABOUT CABARET
In an effort to cut down on "repeated" events, except for announcements of programs offered by cabaret membership organizations, and shows where guests change regularly, cabaret news items will usually appear just once in the newsletter in abbreviated form and linked to a full article on the CABARET NEWS page of the appropriate location on the website. Events advertised on the website will be mentioned in every issue, and events offering discounts to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE are mentioned in every MIDWEEK issue.

ABOUT CABARET NEWS IN THE NEWSLETTER, BLOG AND WEBSITES
How do you get an item posted in the CABARET NEWS section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website and in the newsletter? It is really quite simple.

Just e-mail me a press release of at least four or five paragraphs, giving the complete information on your show, CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available. Please send me complete information - and do not merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference to a website. By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from the press releases I receive before using the item on my website or in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the four or more paragraphs. If you don't have a press release, just click here: http://www.svhamstra.com/PressRelease1.shtml and fill out the information as completely as possible - or use the items asked for as a guide to the information I need.

Just send in your press release or listings request in simple txt format if possible (the format I write these issues in and use for the website), and send any photos as attachments, not imbedded within the e-mail. And, please, please don't send, instead of a press release, one of those e-mails with all those annoying html links (with multi-columns, embedded photos, distracting backgrounds, etc.) Do not send simply a .jpg of your post card. Do not send us one of those "e-vite" things that require us to "click to open" and lead to a web page somewhere. I never open them! The more information the better - it is easier for me to trim the release than to hunt and google websites for more information.

We usually run articles about 2 to 3 weeks before event date if possible so it is wisest to send your release about 4 weeks in advance. Because of the large number of items received, we can only use news of event just once, so we try not to get too far ahead in the news. There are a few exceptions to the "just once" rule:

+++ If the event is advertised on the website it will be repeated in every issue of the newsletter

+++ If the event offers a discount to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE it will be included in each MID-WEEK issue of the newsletter.

+++ Major benefits where ALL proceeds are given to the charity named will be mentioned in every issue as well as major cabaret events like cabaret festivals and galas.

+++ We also include at least once each week those regular (monthly, weekly, etc.) events with guests who change each performance, like SETH'S BROADWAY CHATTERBOX, BOB EGAN'S MONDAY SHOWCASE and the like.

IT'S TIME TO GO
At the top of this newsletter I promised that you would read things in this issue you will not find published anywhere else. Did I keep my promise?

I realize that there is probably far more information here than you might be able to digest in one reading, but please keep in mind that for the performers mentioned, CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE is one of the few publications that spread the word about their shows and performances. To them, that item about their show is most important, and the fact that every issue published is also posted on my website and on the blog means two additional places where the show information can be found by fans and search engines (Google, etc.) alike. Your banner ads and membership donations make this all possible.

One more reminder - all current memberships for CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE expired on Thursday, July 5th 2007. You can renew (or get a new) membership almost instantly on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.svhamstra.com/ ), using a credit card. Just click on the button at the top of every page of the website marked JOIN HERE. Or you can mail your check, made out simply to Stu Hamstra to 676A Ninth Avenue #120, New York, NY 10036. Memberships are available at several levels with varying benefits. Basic membership (which can be upgraded at any time with full credit) is $20 (SILVER). You membership dollars support the website, the newsletter, the blog and other activities of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE. Support CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE as it promotes the art and artists of cabaret.

And that is just about the way it was.

Hugs & Stuff,

STU
