SAD NEWS
HERB STRAUSS - SINGER, PHILANTHROPIST - DIES DAY BEFORE LSLF SHOW
Herb Strauss, whose warm baritone graced musical theater, recordings,
synagogues, and the stage of Carnegie Hall, and whose annual fundraising
concerts for the Lauri Strauss Leukemia Foundation (http://www.lslf.org/)
presented many cabaret performers to new audiences, passed away on
Sunday, November 25th from complications from cancer. He was 78.
In 1984, Herb and his wife, Evelyn, lost their eldest
daughter, Lauri, 26, to leukemia. With friends and family, the Strausses
created the Lauri Strauss Leukemia Foundation, to fund research
to find a cure. Through eighteen annual gala concerts, which now
take place at Carnegie Hall, the foundation has raised and awarded
research grants totaling more than $3 million; these grants, in
turn, have generated more than $130 million in additional research
funding.
Herb had planned to attend this year's CARNEGIE HALL
LSLF event, held one day after his death on Monday the 26th, and
had arranged an ambulance, wheelchair and even a tuxedo to wear
to the affair. Each year he would appear, usually at intermission,
to sing in a stirring baritone, "I Wish You Well," a song written
by his longtime friends Peter Haas and Eugene Goldberg. But this
year it was not to be.
It was Judy Collins who spearheaded the first fundraising
concert. Among those who have followed are Barry Manilow, the Metropolitan
Opera's Robert Merrill, folk singers Odetta and Peter Yarrow, KT
Sullivan and Mark Nadler, jazz legends Bucky Pizzarelli and Peter
Appleyard, Maureen McGovern, WQXR's Midge Woolsey, Hilary Kole,
John DeMarco, Carol Woods, Luci Arnaz and Robert Klein, Liza Minnelli
(in a special salute to Kander and Ebb), Deborah Tranelli, Mark
McVey, Sal Viviano, Hilary Kole, and The Friars Club's Freddie Roman.
The orchestra, from the start, has been The New York Pops, conducted
first by the late Skitch Henderson, then by Marvin Hamlisch, and
now by Barry Levitt, who also serves as the Gala's co-producer.
Born in Offenbach, Germany, he came to America with
his family in 1937, escaping Nazi rule. Herb himself was a performer,
starting at age 6 - he was a soprano then - in a synagogue in Offenbach.
The family migrated to Cleveland; Herb, later attending Princeton
University, performed in musical shows of the Triangle Club, and
later sang lead roles in several summer theaters. He got his master's
from Columbia University, majoring in English and advertising.
Soon married, and with two daughters, Herb turned
to making a living in television and advertising production, with
such organizations as NBC Television, National Educational Television,
and ad agencies. His work earned him a Grand Prix at the Cannes
Film Festival as well as two "Clio" awards and two Emmy nominations.
He later formed his own company, Herb Strauss Productions, where
he created, produced and directed commercials, TV programs and corporate
videos for many major advertisers and ad agencies.
Herb never stopped singing. He produced and starred
on two recordings, "Folk Music for People Who Hate Folk Music" and
"Songs and Stories for the Jewish Holidays." In addition, for more
than 50 years, he has been cantor at the Port Washington Jewish
Center, in Port Washington, New York.
Herb Strauss is survived by his wife Evelyn; their
daughter, Julie and her husband, David Safran; two grandchildren,
Gregory and Emily Safran; Herb's sister, Ruth Berger; and Ruth's
family.

HERE & THERE
I was going to start out and say that this issue is not going to be
a very large one - but I just looked at the word count (before actually
writing this HERE & THERE section) and discovered that it not that
small at all. Certainly not as large as Monday's newsletter which
set the record for words. But we had a lot to cover, since we had
no issue last week Thursday.
I want to remind you again that all the news items
from these newsletters are "accumulated" in the Diary on the website
(just click on the flash button at the top of every page on the
website marked DIARY. (folks in third-world countries who do not
have computers powerful enough to display flash images can scroll
down a bit and click on the underlined item about the Diary and
arrive at the same place).
So, we skip a number of dates on our listings below
not because there are no cabaret events those nights, but simply
because I didn't receive news about any NEW cabaret events for those
nights not already listed in previous issues.
I am using a rented computer to send out this issue. My cute little
MAC mini computer had developed some issues with overheating and it
became impossible to do a lot of important tasks like, scanning photos,
downloading CDs into my iTunes library, or even adding tunes and files
to my iPod. Any task involving uploading and downloading (including
some of the complicated java/flash web pages) was interrupted by the
computer shutting itself down. It is in for repair (fortunately it
is still under warranty) and should be home before the weekend.
But in the meantime I lost several hours of work time
- Tuesday morning the little guy was acting up worse than ever so
I made a quick backup of the whole hard drive, detached everything
and went over to TEKSERVE, on 23rd Street, just around the corner
from the METROPOLITAN ROOM (as advised by the folks at Apple). I
had to wait in line (actually on a chair) for over an hour, but
finally my number was called and the techie looked it over, heard
my tale of woe and took it upstairs to "emergency" and came back
with a partial diagnosis - a motherboard transplant seemed to be
called for.
I had to wait another hour while a rental machine
was prepped, and then headed for home with my temp machine. Of course
it took another few hours to redo all the settings, copy my files
on the substitute and then open my e-mail and get to the message
board to erase all the spam messages so there would be room for
new items (I have to do this task about 5 times a day). So consider
Tuesday a total loss for getting any work done.
Meantime, my pal Daniel is off to Washington DC - a relative from
South America is visiting someone there and Daniel went down to meet
him and have dinner. He returns some time on Friday. He has already
text-messaged several discoveries he made: the subways quit at 11:30
pm - and taxi rides cost a fortune. But cigarettes are cheaper then
NYC (I think they are cheaper anywhere than NYC where a pack of smokes
now runs $7.50). And the crab cakes are fantastic!
Speaking of downloading CDs, I was finally able to add to my iTunes
collection about a dozen CDs that have been accumulating for a few
weeks - every time I tried before the computer would quit. I have
just one more to add, but I stopped so I could listen to one I just
uploaded, Sue & Edd's Fabulous Christmas, which Sue Matsuki had left
for me at DON'T TELL MAMA on Tuesday night and I picked up last night.
The official release is this Saturday, December 1st (yes Virginia,
there is a December coming very quickly now) at 7:00 pm at THE DUPLEX
(details below). As soon as this issue is finished I will add the
CD to my iPod so I can listen and stay in the holiday spirit all day.
Sue and Edd Clark recorded this CD just after a sold-out holiday show
they did last year. On Saturday only they will be available at the
show for $10 - them the price goes up. I already made reservations.
You can find a whole page of Cabaret Holiday CDs on
my website - just click on the special underlined description on
the home (opening page). Click on the CD covers displayed and it
will take you to where the CD can be purchased.
Another CD I was dying to hear was a pre-release of MaryJo Mundy's
Halfway to Heaven recording. It was made at a live performance at
THE GARDENIA - and although I met MaryJo several years ago on a visit
to LA, I had never heard her vocals. I was blown away (I loaded it
to my iPod last night and listened on the subway to & from midtown.
This is a special CD that celebrates a very special change in MaryJo's
live - a rebirth almost - and I loved every minute. And the vocals
--- oh I said that already!
Two cuts are sort of permanently on my iPod - DC Anderson's "I am
still" from his CD of the same name, and Marcus Simeone's "Alone Again"
from his new CD "At Last." Both are so well done - and so touching
- I can't stop loving them. Problem is, they are both sort of melancholy
songs, and were the only two songs on my iPod while I was waiting
in line at the computer repair store. As a result I must have looked
very sad and forlorn sitting in the waiting area. At least now I have
MaryJo's and Sue & Edd's CDs on the little iPod shuffle to give my
day an upbeat balance.
So I go to DON'T TELL MAMA to pick up Sue & Edd's CD, and the lovely
Randy Lester is there. beaming with joy. She beckons me to follow
her into the rear cabaret room (my heart is pounding already, since
I know there is no show booked there at 10:00 pm and the room will
be empty). I follow obediently (no one ever disobeys Randy) and I
will tell you, when I entered the room and looked around, I was beaming
too! The room had been "gutted" with the floor and stage stripped
and sanded, the bar area in the midst of rebuilding, and soon new
banquettes will be installed. The room is getting a "makeover" worthy
of a cable TV show! And when this room is finished, the room next
door - formerly an office area - will be turned into a second cabaret
space. And, in addition, one of the two restrooms off the cabaret
room, is being reconditioned and when that one is complete, the other
one will be as well.
Now I was beaming, as I went back into the piano bar
and was approached by the pianist for the night, Michael Isaacs,
who was on break - and he was beaming too. It seems he was just
signed for and had completed 5 TV commercials for STEINMART Department
stores. You can see some of them on uTube - just search on the word
STEINMART.
And just then in came the new owner of MAMA's and
I was ready to give him a big hug - and thanked him again and again
for the renovations of the cabaret room and the building of a second
performance space as well. He mentioned that he had a lot more plans
to improve the venue and I should "stay tuned." Interestingly, he
know hardly anything about cabaret and piano bars until he bought
the building - he is in the real estate business. But once he started
visiting the piano bar and cabaret shows he became excited - and
was so changed by the enthusiasm of the staff and the patrons he
decided to invest in major improvements and make the space into
the best in town! So keep an eye on MAMA'S over the next couple
of months!
I saw two cabaret shows since the Monday issue - first on Tuesday
night I was at the BROADWAY BABY MUSIC BOX showroom for Frank Torren's
show at 8:00 pm. I have heard Frank a few times sing at open mic events
but never in a full show. When I grow up I want to be as handsome
and distinguished looking at Frank! And I would love to have his vocals,
too. One special thing about the man is his genuine friendliness and
charm. And one special thing I appreciated especially was the way
he truly presented the lyrics of the songs (mainly showtunes). With
Rick Unterberg at the piano, it was truly an enjoyable hour. Special
mention must be made of Frank's rendition of the Holt/Brell classic
"The Days of the Waltz." So many performers like to use this song
to show off their ability to sing faster and faster - totally ignoring
"waltz time." Frank instead chose to sing it emphasizing the lyric
not the speed. Bravo! (Frank is back at THE MUSIC BOX on Sunday the
2nd at 2:00 pm - details below - try to catch this one).
The second show was one I saw last night at 8:30 pm at THE LAURIE
BEECHMAN and it was really a fun-filled treat. The show is called
"Ben Rauch Is Horace Vanderveer" and is really more theater than cabaret.
Ben plays the part of a young man from New Jersey obsessed with becoming
a Broadway star (where have we heard this before?). The the twist
is that Ben is so obviously unsuited to be a Broadway star, the show
gets funnier and funnier as the story moves along. Oblivious to his
shortcomings (aren't we all?) he continues to beat his head against
the wall truly believing that the next audition will get him that
big break. Horace's "girlfriend," a very sassy Yolanda Batts, a teen
ensemble (we're talking low teens here - chosen so that when Horace
becomes a big star they will still be young enough to be with him
when he plays the teen idol in GREASE - his dream part). Even his
band disrespects him and he doesn't notice! Much fun, huge cast, great
song/show parodies and a lot of great writing make this a fun evening
of cabaret. You must see this one, gang. It plays 4 more times - Tuesday
the 4th at 7 pm, Saturday the 8th at 2:00 pm, Monday the 10th at 9:00
pm and Saturday the 15th at 2:00 pm. I still can't believe I was able
to absorb all the gags in the show - I want to go back once more!
I hope to see you tonight at UNCLE CHARLIE'S some time after 8:00
pm to celebrate David Pellegrene's birthday - details below. David
has been a big supporter with his ads on the website this year. Without
supporters like this there would be now newsletter, no website. And
UNCLE CHARLIE'S always puts out a great buffet for celebrations like
this! Come on down!
We hit 400 members (we are now at 404) for CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
and now I have one more goal to reach - to surpass 427 members. That's
the total members we had in 2004, our biggest membership year. Fingers
crossed. Thank to all 404 members for your support!
Why not join today and help us hit that goal? A simple
SILVER membership still costs only $20 - in our own move to counter
inflation, it has been $20 since the membership program started
in 2001. And you readers overseas and in Canada: With the dollar
sinking to new lows, the membership cost is a real bargain! Click
on the "flash" button marked JOIN HERE at the top of every page
on the website - if you object to "flash" style buttons or live
in a third-world country where the computers are not powerful enough
to display flash images, just slide down the page and there is a
blue jpg button just above the line that says LATEST ISSUES OF THE
NEWSLETTER that will take you to the same page on the website detailing
all the levels and benefits of membership.
If you want to make sure your message is seen by just about everyone
in cabaret, post it on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE message board (just
click on the button at the top of very page marked MESSAGE BOARD).
And just to let you know, sponsorship of the board - an exclusive
banner (no other ads appear on this page) - is available at the end
of the year. Click on the button marked BANNER INFO for information.
There are plenty of other banner slots open for December if you want
to advertise your holiday show or CD or other cabaret related items.
Unfortunately the small home-page side bar banners are nearly sold
out through Christmas - last year we had a lot of slots open and were
offering special deals to sell the squares, perfect for promoting
a CD. Ads and banners of all other sizes, prices and shapes are available
on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website - costing from as little as
$37 per week (3 week regular size banner) to our super special "2000
page" super-sidebar ads running $125 per week (price drops to $100
per week after the first 2 weeks).
There is an advertising plan available to meet just
about any budget, and members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE get discounts
and rebates as well - SILVER members get $20 off their first banner
in a membership year and GOLD members a 20% discount on all ads
in a membership year (discounts/rebates do not apply to the $25
sidebar ads). Your ad could be seen up to 6000 times a day - by
folks interested in cabaret. And an ad on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
website means your event or CD is mentioned in every issue of the
newsletter, sent out twice a week to 2500 (note we dropped the "nearly")
subscribers as long as the ad or banner is running. As I say, it
is the ad program that keeps on giving!
We're still looking for a sponsor for John Hoglund's AFTER DARK section
and and one slot is available right now for Carla Gordon's HEARTLAND
CABARET section on the website. Sponsorship is via special exclusive
SUPER SIDE-BAR ads on these pages. Click on the button marked BANNER
INFO at the top of every page on the website for details. Proceeds
from the ads go to support these sections.
Well, before it gets too late I want to get this issue out and get
back to all the stuff that needs to be added to the website, including
items from Monday's newsletter. Plus I have one more CD to load into
my iTunes library - Jonathan Whitton's "Perfect Finite" CD, to be
release at Jonathan's show on Tuesday, December 11th at THE LAURIE
BEECHMAN (details below). I ran into Jonathan at Ben Rauch's show
last night and he gave me a pre-release copy.
Until Monday.
NOW FOR SOME NEWS ABOUT CABARET SHOWS AND STUFF
In an effort to cut down on "repeated" events, except for announcements
of programs offered by cabaret membership organizations, and shows
where guests change regularly, cabaret news items will usually appear
just once in the newsletter in abbreviated form, in chronological
order where possible, and linked to a full article on the CABARET
NEWS page of the appropriate location on the website.

REMINDER REGARDING CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE DISCOUNTS
To be eligible for a listing on the MEMBER DEALS page you must send
in your flier, press release and/or other promotional materials clearly
showing the discount offer. That information will be used as the basis
for the MEMBER DEALS page notice, as well as for the newsletter listing.
Please be sure to check with the venue where you are performing to
be sure that these discounts will be honored. Any member who is denied
a properly listed CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE discount should notify me
at once. I cannot guarantee that the discount will be honored, but
I can take steps to contact the parties involved and publish the facts
in the newsletter and remove the listing from the MEMBER DEALS page.
ABOUT CABARET NEWS IN THE NEWSLETTER AND ON THE WEBSITE
How do you get an item posted in the CABARET NEWS section of the CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE website and in the newsletter? It is really quite simple.
Just e-mail me a press release of at least four or
five paragraphs, giving the complete information on your show, CD
release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or
gif format if available. Please send me complete information - and
do not merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference to a
website. By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from the
press releases I receive before using the item on my website or
in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the
four or more paragraphs. If you don't have a press release, just
and fill out the information as completely as possible - or use
the items asked for as a guide to the information I need.
Just send in your press release or listings request
in simple txt format if possible (the format I write these issues
in and use for the website), and send any photos as attachments,
not imbedded within the e-mail. And, please, please don't send,
instead of a press release, one of those e-mails with all those
annoying html links (with multi-columns, embedded photos, distracting
backgrounds, etc.) Do not send simply a .jpg of your post card.
Do not send us one of those "e-vite" things that require us to "click
to open" and lead to a web page somewhere. I never open them! The
more information the better - it is easier for me to trim the release
than to hunt and google websites for more information.
We usually run articles about 3 weeks before event
date if possible so it is wisest to send your release about 4 weeks
in advance. Because of the large number of items received, we can
only use news of event just once, so we try not to get too far ahead
in the news. There are a few exceptions to the "just once" rule:
++ If the event is advertised on the website it will
be repeated in each MONDAY issue of the newsletter
++ If the event offers a discount to members of CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE it will be included in the DISCOUNTS section of each
MID-WEEK issue of the newsletter.
++ Major benefits where ALL proceeds are given to
the charity named will be mentioned in every issue as well as major
cabaret events like cabaret festivals and galas.
++ We also include at least once each week those regular
(monthly, weekly, etc.) events with guests who change each performance,
like SETH'S BROADWAY CHATTERBOX, BOB EGAN'S MONDAY SHOWCASE and
the like.
IT'S TIME TO GO
Near the top of this newsletter I promised that you would read things
in this issue you will not find published anywhere else. Did I keep
my promise?
I realize that there is probably far more information here than you
might be able to digest in one reading, but please keep in mind that
for the performers mentioned, CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE is one of the
few publications that spread the word about their shows and performances.
To them, that item about their show is most important, and the fact
that every issue published is also posted on my website means another
place where they can be found by fans and search engines (Google,
etc.) alike.
One more reminder - all current memberships for CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
expired on Thursday, July 5th 2007. You can renew (or get a new) membership
almost instantly on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.svhamstra.com/

NY 10036. Memberships are available at several levels with varying
benefits. Basic membership (which can be upgraded at any time with
full credit) is $20 (SILVER). You membership dollars support the website,
the newsletter, the blog and other activities of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE.
Support CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE as it promotes the art and artists
of cabaret.
And that is just about the way it was.
