HERE & THERE
The Holiday Season is full upon us - including a little bit of snow that fell overnight giving the city a sparkle (and covering a :multitude of sins"). The lighting of the giant Christmas tree in Rockefeller Center las week sort of marked the official start (unless you count the arrival of Santa at MACY'S department store on Thanksgiving Day the truer signal the holiday spirit). The snow has already melted away, but the spirit lives on.

I was up at MACY'S last Saturday - not to visit Santa but just to get a flavor of the season. For the past two Christmases I have avoided venturing out too much in the cold weather, mainly from the fear of slipping and falling again, but this year I have made a resolution to get out and about as much as possible to soak up the feeling. I might even make it to church on Christmas Eve - weather permitting.

I already had a visit from Santa - or I should say a visit with Santa - when I was at David Pellegrene's Birthday Party at UNCLE CHARLIE'S last Thursday night. Such fun! The piano bar area was packed with well wishers and singers taking turns at the open mic - including a singer who works this time of year as a professional Santa. The white beard and the belly are real! David is at the piano Thursday through Saturday starting around 9:00 pm every week, and Thursday nights he has a special "no-cover cabaret" show starting at 8:00 pm. This week's guest performer is a young man named Dexter who dropped by to sing a song or two and I am going to try to get back there Thursday to hear is full show.

I am still using the rented computer today - my own little MAC Mini is not back from the repair shop yet. They sort of promised it would be back either Friday or Monday, so I am waiting for their call. This rental came with a lot of programs - all the latest versions. I never realized before how many of the programs I use regularly need to be updated. If there is a Santa out there who would like to get a gift for CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, I have a "wish list" of upgrades ready to send, including DREAMWEAVER and PHOTOSHOP - the programs I use extensively for the website. These are pretty expensive programs - the rest of my less expensive applications I usually upgrade and update as I go but I never seem to have the extra funds to update the expensive ones.

My sidekick Daniel returned from Washington DC with a lot of tales to tell - it was an "excellent adventure." He saw both the best (the memorials, museums and government buildings) and the worst (a huge traffic jam when his bus left the city on Friday afternoon at 4:30 pm) of DC, but overall was happy he went. We celebrated his return by heading over to THE LAURIE BEECHMAN late Friday night to Brandon Cutrell's AFTER PARTY. I was amazed to discover the room was packed when we got there after 12:30 am! We had to wait for a table to clear before we could get seats, and no one seemed to want to leave.

It was sort of a party weekend - on Saturday I was at THE DUPLEX at 7:00 pm for Sue Matsuki and Edd Clark's FABULOUS CHRISTMAS PARTY show and CD release, then uptown to DON'T TELL MAMA for the wildly funny Poole Party at 8:30 pm, and finally was joined by Daniel for Tommy Femia's Christmas with Judy! show at 11:00 pm. All these events repeat in the weeks ahead - see the listings by date section below.

I want to remind you again that all the news items from these newsletters are "accumulated" in the Datebook/Diary on the website (just click on the flash button at the top of every page on the website marked DATEBOOK/DIARY. So, we skip a number of dates on our listings below not because there are no cabaret events those nights, but simply because I didn't receive news about any NEW cabaret events for those nights not already listed in previous issues.

Here's a few ways you can do more to promote (and support) both the art and the artists this holiday season.

First off, cabaret CDs are a great and inexpensive way to express your love and friendship through giving - and there is a special page on my website with a few dozen holiday themed CDs by cabaret artists that would make excellent holiday gifts. Just go to the opening page on the website and look for this phrase: "NEW! Looking for a HOLIDAY THEMED CD? Check out our 2007 HOLIDAY CD page! These CDs will brighten your holidays and make excellent gifts as well!" and click the underlined link.

All members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE are given the opportunity to promote their cabaret CDs in a special section of the website as well - just click on the button marked CABARET CDs at the top of any page on the website to see who is offering their CDs this year - there are literally 100s to choose from!

Finally, why not give a CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE membership to someone who you know loves cabaret? A basic SILVER membership is just $20 - and it is a gift that keeps on giving year round - with discounts and/or rebates on advertising, discounts off the cover on cabaret events and other benefits. Just click on the button marked JOIN HERE, also at the top of every page, for details and even a method where you can pay by credit card! Let me know that it is a gift, and I will send a special welcome letter to the recipient.

We had some sad news over the weekend - talented pianist and musician and singer Jeffrey Claflin died last Friday after a brave battle with lung cancer at age 54. Jeffrey Laird Claflin was born in 1953 in Philadelphia, but had established himself as a NYC piano bar entertainer about the same time as I started to visit the piano bars and cabarets in 1990 or so. A strikingly handsome man with great vocals and charm, I would often see him at the piano at THE 5 OAKS and other rooms around town. Always ready with a good story and a quick song, he was one of the best in town. He returned to the Philadelphia area a while back but often visited NYC and liked to give Jerry Scott a break by sitting in for a 20 minutes or so at DANNY'S. He will be truly missed.

If you are planning a special Holiday themed show or a New Year's Eve event, please send in your press releases this week. Next week Monday's issue will pay special attention to holiday shows - most folks plan their New Year's Eve activities a few weeks in advance - please don't wait until the last minute. Details on what we are looking for to use in the newsletter and on the website are outlined in the last section of every newsletter. Once again, please do not simply send a jpg of your flier - I have no way to use them and they get deleted almost as soon as received. Please don't simply send an announcement with a link to your website - I don't have the time. There are plenty of folks who send me complete and detailed release, and I admit, I use their articles first.

We added two new members over the weekend bringing our total to 406 - just 24 members short of our 430 member goal by Christmas. Meantime I sent a reminder over the weekend to about 200 former members of the past two years who have yet to renew their memberships. If you have postponed joining, now is the time to come aboard. Support the art and the artists of cabaret by supporting CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE!

Time to send this issue off - and continue to play "catchup" with the tons of work that accumulated, including over 100 e-mails still to answer, about a dozen press releases to post on the website, photos to scan and CDs to listen to. Plus I still have to get to DON'T TELL MAMA for happy hour and get that free drink from Craig Coursey!

Until Thursday then.

NOW FOR SOME NEWS ABOUT CABARET
In an effort to cut down on "repeated" events, except for announcements of programs offered by cabaret membership organizations, and shows where guests change regularly, cabaret news items will usually appear just once in the newsletter in abbreviated form and linked to a full article on the CABARET NEWS page of the appropriate location on the website. Events advertised on the website will be mentioned in every issue, and events offering discounts to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE are mentioned in every MIDWEEK issue.

ABOUT CABARET NEWS IN THE NEWSLETTER, BLOG AND WEBSITES
How do you get an item posted in the CABARET NEWS section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website and in the newsletter? It is really quite simple.

Just e-mail me a press release of at least four or five paragraphs, giving the complete information on your show, CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available. Please send me complete information - and do not merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference to a website. By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from the press releases I receive before using the item on my website or in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the four or more paragraphs. If you don't have a press release, just click here: http://www.svhamstra.com/PressRelease1.shtml and fill out the information as completely as possible - or use the items asked for as a guide to the information I need.

Just send in your press release or listings request in simple txt format if possible (the format I write these issues in and use for the website), and send any photos as attachments, not imbedded within the e-mail. And, please, please don't send, instead of a press release, one of those e-mails with all those annoying html links (with multi-columns, embedded photos, distracting backgrounds, etc.) Do not send simply a .jpg of your post card. Do not send us one of those "e-vite" things that require us to "click to open" and lead to a web page somewhere. I never open them! The more information the better - it is easier for me to trim the release than to hunt and google websites for more information.

We usually run articles about 2 to 3 weeks before event date if possible so it is wisest to send your release about 4 weeks in advance. Because of the large number of items received, we can only use news of event just once, so we try not to get too far ahead in the news. There are a few exceptions to the "just once" rule:

+++ If the event is advertised on the website it will be repeated in every issue of the newsletter

+++ If the event offers a discount to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE it will be included in each MID-WEEK issue of the newsletter.

+++ Major benefits where ALL proceeds are given to the charity named will be mentioned in every issue as well as major cabaret events like cabaret festivals and galas.

+++ We also include at least once each week those regular (monthly, weekly, etc.) events with guests who change each performance, like SETH'S BROADWAY CHATTERBOX, BOB EGAN'S MONDAY SHOWCASE and the like.

SPECIAL TO ALL SUBSCRIBERS REGARDING NEWSLETTER SCHEDULE CHANGE
Since both Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve fall on Monday this year, there will be no CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE newsletters send on those days. Instead of Thursday issues on the 27th of January and 3rd of January, special MIDWEEK DOUBLE ISSUES will be sent on Wednesday the 26th of December and Wednesday the 2nd of January 2008. The following week we will resume our regular twice-weekly schedule on Mondays and Thursdays.

IT'S TIME TO GO
At the top of this newsletter I promised that you would read things in this issue you will not find published anywhere else. Did I keep my promise?

I realize that there is probably far more information here than you might be able to digest in one reading, but please keep in mind that for the performers mentioned, CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE is one of the few publications that spread the word about their shows and performances. To them, that item about their show is most important, and the fact that every issue published is also posted on my website and on the blog means two additional places where the show information can be found by fans and search engines (Google, etc.) alike. Your banner ads and membership donations make this all possible.

One more reminder - all current memberships for CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE expired on Thursday, July 5th 2007. You can renew (or get a new) membership almost instantly on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.svhamstra.com/ ), using a credit card. Just click on the button at the top of every page of the website marked JOIN HERE. Or you can mail your check, made out simply to Stu Hamstra to 676A Ninth Avenue #120, New York, NY 10036. Memberships are available at several levels with varying benefits. Basic membership (which can be upgraded at any time with full credit) is $20 (SILVER). You membership dollars support the website, the newsletter, the blog and other activities of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE. Support CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE as it promotes the art and artists of cabaret.

With this issue I have completely covered all the press and news released received to date for December events - if your item hasn't appeared please resend. In the Thursday issue we will begin listing 2008 shows. Don't forget - no issues on Mondays the 24th & 31st because of the holidays.

And that is just about the way it was.

Hugs & Stuff,

STU
