HERE & THERE
I'm getting sleepy! I've been at this computer since 6:30 am, had 5 cups of coffee, scoured my files to find every last bit of December news sent me, and I think I've got it all pretty much finished except the "Here & There" part, which I always save for last. But it is already 11:00 am, and I don't know how much longer I can stay awake! When you yawn within a yawn, you are sleepy!

My computer is back! I picked it up on Tuesday - it was away nearly a week getting repaired. And I am not happy. Yes, I am happy I got it back, but I think I was "taken for a ride." Here's the deal. I dropped it off last Tuesday, and the young man in the service deportment took it "upstairs" to get an initial estimate of how long it would take to repair. I assume they opened it up and looked inside (a MAC-mini should only be opened by a licensed technician or the warranty is voided). He came back and said it might need a new "motherboard" and it would take 3 or 4 days. I could not be without a computer for more than a day, so I took home a rental ($32 a day - not covered by the service agreement). On Monday afternoon they called and said it was ready for pickup. It apparently took 4 business days to make the repair. So I went there on Tuesday morning, and was told there was a $63 charge - apparently all that was necessary was to vacuum out the dust that had accumulated inside the computer - and vacuuming out dust was not covered by the service agreement!

Now I am a calm, patient, long-suffering person. I remain calm, cool and collected even when accosted by enraged publicists. But this was beyond absurd - it was downright wrong. They opened the machine a week earlier, and I am sure that the dust inside was visible then - and I can understand maybe keeping it overnight after vacuuming it out to see if there were any other problems. But to wait (and charge rental) for nearly a week, and then call me back, to charge me another $63 to vacuum it? It is only 5 inches square, 3 inches high. It is not much larger than a ham sandwich! I can't say I exploded, but I certainly was "steamed."

Managers were called, conferences were held, computers were consulted, and at first they tried to explain why vacuuming the computer wasn't covered: since no parts needed to be replaced, technically the warranty contract didn't apply. Huh? If they replaced a part, would they have vacuumed for free? Or would I still be charged $63? This inquiry was responded to with some sputtering. Another conference. They had no answer. Why would it take 6 days - for which I paid rental on a replacement computer - to simply vacuum the machine? That could have been done while I waited the previous Tuesday. There was a another conference out of my hearing, and the manager came back, typed something into the computer that records my account, hit return and a piece of paper came out of a nearby printer - with a zero balance due. No explanation, no apology, not even a "thank you very much." In minutes I was on my way home - but still just a little "steamed" and a lot poorer.

I hooked everything up, fired up the little fella, and all went well - except ... now the CD burner/player won't accept CDs! Spits them right back out! Fortunately I have a second burner/player (that also burns DVDs), but now I have to figure out how to get the thing repaired - I cannot afford another rental, I feel they should fix it for free, but I really don't want to go back there. Of course, I could take Daniel along - he's someone who knows exactly when, where and how to lose his temper, that hot fierce out-of-control temper that Latinos are known for. His methods of "diplomacy" are the exact opposite of mine. We each often get the same results, but somehow his results come more quickly.

If you are planning a special Holiday themed show or a New Year's Eve event, please send in your press releases this week. Next week Monday's issue will pay special attention to holiday shows - most folks plan their New Year's Eve activities a few weeks in advance - please don't wait until the last minute. Details on what we are looking for to use in the newsletter and on the website are outlined in the last section of every newsletter. Once again, please do not simply send a jpg of your flier - I have no way to use them and they get deleted almost as soon as received. Please don't simply send an announcement with a link to your website - I don't have the time. There are plenty of folks who send me complete and detailed release, and I admit, I use their articles first.

We added two new members to the membership rolls of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE yesterday - bringing our total to 408 - just 22 members short of our 430 member goal by Christmas. If you have postponed joining, now is the time to come aboard. Support the art and the artists of cabaret by supporting CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE!

The weather has been extremely cold - and there have been lots of "snow flurries" and I only got a chance to see one show since Monday - actually it was on Monday night - Sarah Mucho's very exotic, unusual and fascinating "Subterranean Circus" at THE DUPLEX at 7:00 pm. It repeats on Friday night (December 7th) at 9:30 pm. It is cabaret on a different level - and with Bobby Peaco as musical director and Kristine Zbornik directing, one does not expect the ordinary.

I want to remind you again that all the news items from these newsletters are "accumulated" in the Datebook/Diary on the website (just click on the flash button at the top of every page on the website marked DATEBOOK/DIARY. So, we skip a number of dates on our listings below not because there are no cabaret events those nights, but simply because I didn't receive news about any NEW cabaret events for those nights not already listed in previous issues.

It is January-February "White Sale" time at CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE - an extra 5% discount on all cabaret event banner advertising if you pay using PayPal and also offer a discount of no less than $5 to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE (current membership over 400!). The only ads excluded are the $25 per week home-page side-bar ads. This is in addition to any other discounts and/or rebates available to HOTLINE members. Ads can start no earlier than December 30th but can run through March 15th. Certain ad placements are limited, so please e-mail me first, especially if you want a SUPER-SIDE-BAR banner - limited to 2 a week - some weeks are already reserved for at least 1 space. For example, a GOLD member (20% discount on banners) could run a SUPERSIZE banner for 4 weeks for less than $40 per week! A SILVER member, placing an ad for the first time this membership year, could run the same banner for $45 per week. Without discounts the cost would be $55 per week. Banners must be paid in full before they start their run and must start their run by March 2nd to fulfill the 2-week minimum requirement.

Time to finish - I actually had been waiting for an e-mail with some information about an event that I wanted to include in this issue, so I stopped to take a 1/2 hour "mini-nap" but now it is 1:15 pm, the item has not been received and time to send this off. I have so much work to catch up with I don't know where to start! My office (ok, my bedroom) is a mess because I had to go through 5 cartons of CDs yesterday afternoon to find a particular CD that I knew I had but could not remember where it was stored. I want to get some more bookcases and unpack all the CDs, but I have no idea where I can put any additional bookcases!

Until Monday.

NOW FOR SOME NEWS ABOUT CABARET SHOWS AND STUFF
In an effort to cut down on "repeated" events, except for announcements of programs offered by cabaret membership organizations, and shows where guests change regularly, cabaret news items will usually appear just once in the newsletter in abbreviated form, in chronological order where possible, and linked to a full article on the CABARET NEWS page of the appropriate location on the website.

REMINDER REGARDING CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE DISCOUNTS
To be eligible for a listing on the MEMBER DEALS page you must send in your flier, press release and/or other promotional materials clearly showing the discount offer. That information will be used as the basis for the MEMBER DEALS page notice, as well as for the newsletter listing. Please be sure to check with the venue where you are performing to be sure that these discounts will be honored. Any member who is denied a properly listed CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE discount should notify me at once. I cannot guarantee that the discount will be honored, but I can take steps to contact the parties involved and publish the facts in the newsletter and remove the listing from the MEMBER DEALS page.

ABOUT CABARET NEWS IN THE NEWSLETTER AND ON THE WEBSITE
How do you get an item posted in the CABARET NEWS section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website and in the newsletter? It is really quite simple.

Just e-mail me a press release of at least four or five paragraphs, giving the complete information on your show, CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available. Please send me complete information - and do not merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference to a website. By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from the press releases I receive before using the item on my website or in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the four or more paragraphs. If you don't have a press release, just click here: http://www.svhamstra.com/PressRelease1.shtml and fill out the information as completely as possible - or use the items asked for as a guide to the information I need.

Just send in your press release or listings request in simple txt format if possible (the format I write these issues in and use for the website), and send any photos as attachments, not imbedded within the e-mail. And, please, please don't send, instead of a press release, one of those e-mails with all those annoying html links (with multi-columns, embedded photos, distracting backgrounds, etc.) Do not send simply a .jpg of your post card. Do not send us one of those "e-vite" things that require us to "click to open" and lead to a web page somewhere. I never open them! The more information the better - it is easier for me to trim the release than to hunt and google websites for more information.

We usually run articles about 3 weeks before event date if possible so it is wisest to send your release about 4 weeks in advance. Because of the large number of items received, we can only use news of event just once, so we try not to get too far ahead in the news. There are a few exceptions to the "just once" rule:

++ If the event is advertised on the website it will be repeated in each MONDAY issue of the newsletter

++ If the event offers a discount to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE it will be included in the DISCOUNTS section of each MID-WEEK issue of the newsletter.

++ Major benefits where ALL proceeds are given to the charity named will be mentioned in every issue as well as major cabaret events like cabaret festivals and galas.

++ We also include at least once each week those regular (monthly, weekly, etc.) events with guests who change each performance, like SETH'S BROADWAY CHATTERBOX, BOB EGAN'S MONDAY SHOWCASE and the like.

IT'S TIME TO GO
Near the top of this newsletter I promised that you would read things in this issue you will not find published anywhere else. Did I keep my promise?

I realize that there is probably far more information here than you might be able to digest in one reading, but please keep in mind that for the performers mentioned, CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE is one of the few publications that spread the word about their shows and performances. To them, that item about their show is most important, and the fact that every issue published is also posted on my website means another place where they can be found by fans and search engines (Google, etc.) alike.
