BROADWAY BABY BISTRO ANNOUNCES OFFICIAL GRAND OPENING GALA
The recently opened BROADWAY BABY BISTRO & PIANO LOUNGE (318 West 53rd Street, NYC - 212-757-5808 - http://www.broadwaybabybistro.com/ ) located inside The Broadway Comedy Club complex is proud to announce its "official" grand opening gala on Thursday, December 20th with extraordinary singer and Tony nominee ("Smokey Joe's Cafe'") BJ Crosby along with very special guest Darius De Haas who will appear in a special show to celebrate the "official" opening of this exciting new cabaret space.

Returning to her beloved soul/jazz roots where she started in New Orleans, Ms. Crosby will sing songs from her new album, "Best of Your Heart," as well as tunes from her musical theater career. Tony nominated as Best Featured Actress in a Musical for "Smokey Joe's Cafe," BJ Crosby was also nominated for an Olivier Award in London for that show and has also co-starred on Broadway in "One Mo' Time" and played the role of Mama Morton in "Chicago" on Broadway. Her incomparable explosive and soulful singing have placed her in a league of her own and she is in constant demand. She also starred in the PBS special, "Smokey Joe's Cafe: the Songs of Lieber and Stoller."

Darius De Haas appeared on Broadway in "Kiss of the Spider Woman" and "Rent" and in numerous other musical theater productions. He frequently tours with Vanessa Williams and has played Lincoln Center's American Songbook Series, Carnegie Hall, Joe's Pub, London's Royal Festival Hall and Birdland to rave reviews.

There will be a $25 Music Charge and a $15 Food/Drink minimum. There is a convenient parking lot located across the street.

Broadway Baby is the exciting new club conceived by Al Martin, owner of the Broadway Comedy Club, which has been home to the likes of Rosie O'Donnell, Tim Allen and Chris Rock and rising stars in the comedy world who regularly appear on television shows like The David Letterman Show, Conan O'Brien, etc., has introduced cabaret-jazz entertainment. The club will take part in the JVC Jazz Festival with the first "Inner City" Jazz Festival featuring some of today's most promising artists as well as stars from the world of jazz.

A cabaret lover for years, Al has long wanted to introduce cabaret music to his clubs (he also owns The New York Comedy Club on East 24th Street and the 350-seat New York Comedy Club in Boca Raton, Florida.)

Currently, the Songbook Theater is home to the Off-Broadway hit revival of "Our Sinatra" and playing to packed houses. The club also houses the lovely Music Box Showroom off the new piano lounge and also the colorful Chicago City Limits Room.

Upcoming performers include: Joanne Beretta, Darius De Haas, Marcus Simeone and Barbara Brussell as well as, Songs From Manhattan: the Songs of John Wallowitch, a celebration of the songs of the late John Wallowitch featuring performances by Barbara Brussell, Steve Ross, Eric Comstock, Marta Sanders and Daryl Sherman and others paying tribute to the man often referred to as a modern day Noel Coward.

HERE & THERE
What a difference a few degrees make! It has been raining here since yesterday afternoon, and originally there was a prediction for sleet, freezing rain and possibly some snow accumulation today. But the temperatures remained above freezing (it is nearly 40 degrees (f) right now (9:00 am as I write this paragraph) so it is only rain. Go a few miles north and the picture is quite different.

I am hoping for some decent weather this week - and for all of December - because there are a lot of cabaret shows and events that I want to take advantage of. Tonight, for example, I plan to get to DILLON'S for David Auxier's "Family Affair" holiday show at 7:30 pm and then catch (for the second time) Ben Rauch's very funny "Horace Vanderveer" show at THE BEECHMAN at 9:00 pm.

Tomorrow night I want to return once more to the COUGAR show at DON'T TELL MAMA at 8:30 pm with the incredibly talented Donna Moore (she is not only a terrific singer/dancer/actress, but actually co-wrote this show and many of the songs). I have watched this show as it has developed and changed from something I found very wanting into something that is ready to move to the next level - a full 90-minute or more theater piece. This is the last performance in 2007, and I urge you to catch it this week.

I haven't "set in stone" yet my cabaret plans for earlier on Tuesday, but I do know that I have to go to a Christmas Party at 10:00 pm.

Wednesday night I will be return to MAMA'S for Terrell Baker's show at 7:00 pm. This young lad's show is called "Soul, Interrupted" - one of the most sincere and honest shows I've seen this year. Terrell is new on the cabaret scene, and is apparently "doing his homework" - I've run into him at many shows over the past few months. I always say, if you want to learn the art of cabaret - and how it can relate to your own performance - attend as many shows as you can afford, and take note of what you find enjoyable and what you find uninteresting and boring. Then keep those thoughts in mind as you plan your own show.

This issue is a special "pre-holiday" newsletter - I have accumulated all the items I could find about holiday and New Year's Eve shows and included them for todays newsletter. They will be added (or are already added) to the CABARET DIARY/DATEBOOK page, and also will be published later today on a special HOLIDAY EVENT page. Except for those events running banner ads and/or giving member discounts, they will not be included in any newsletters for the remainder of this year. If your holiday-themed event does not appear today, be sure to send me a press release so I can include it in the MIDWEEK issue going out this Thursday and included in the HOLIDAY EVENT and DIARY/DATEBOOK pages.

Also, this issue includes the last of the news items sent me for events through January - except for one item for January 29th. Only two other news items - for February events - remain in my "unpublished" folder. If you sent a news item for 2007 and it hasn't appeared, please resend it at once. Please make sure that you check out the instructions near the bottom of this issue as ti exactly what you need to include to be published. Sending me a flier or postcard, or a website link, is not sufficient.

Incidentally, if you are counting on the venue you are performing in to handle your publicity and advertising for you, think again. Several clubs send me a monthly schedule with the minimum of information, often omitting important items like the name of the musical director or the members of the band (if applicable). One club sends me a "weekly" schedule - usually on Monday afternoon after the Monday issue has been completed and mailed out.

Remember, in cabaret, at least in most cases, the performer is the producer - it is up to the producer to make sure that information is sent to the media in the form of a press release several weeks before the event(s). It is up to the producer to arrange advertising and promotion. Unless the club has a vested interest in your show (in the form of a guarantee), it is up to you and you alone to build the audience and do the promotion. The fact that you are listed on the venue's website is simply not sufficient. Check out the Tips & FAQs pages on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website for more information on reaching the press and building an audience.

I want to remind you again that all the news items from these newsletters are "accumulated" in the Datebook/Diary on the website (just click on the flash button at the top of every page on the website marked DATEBOOK/DIARY. So, we skip a number of dates on our listings below not because there are no cabaret events those nights, but simply because I didn't receive news about any NEW cabaret events for those nights not already listed in previous issues.

In 15 days it will be Christmas - and I need only 19 more folks to join as members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE to reach 430 and break the membership record set in 2004 of 427 members. If you have not joined for the 2007-2008 membership year, I hope you will do so this week. Our subscription list for the free twice-weekly newsletter has topped the 2500 mark for the very first time ever, and visits to the website continue to increase. But to keep this all going, we need your support - via banner advertising and membership donations. Frankly, I am puzzled - there are at least 150 subscribers out there who are my personal friends (I think) who have not yet joined as members this year - some have never joined. Many of these are folks I write about often in these newsletters and on the website, including folks that send in press releases and sometimes even complain if I don't include their item right away. Even if you can't afford the basic $20 membership, drop me a line. Many members, when they join, include an extra $5 or more to allow us to give "free" memberships to folks experiencing financial hardships.

I have been spending the past several days listening to CDs on my little iPod Shuffle - especially holiday CDs, in order to get me into the spirit (there is a full list with cover photos of a few dozen holiday CDs on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website, including "where to buy" information). But I did get two special CDs this week that I really enjoyed, in spite of the fact that they were quite different in style and content.

2007 MAC Male Jazz Vocalist Award winner John De Marco sent me three copies of his CD "Pure and Simple" - one for my own use and two to give away as premiums. I have already decided to give one away to the 430th member to join CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE for the 2007-2008 membership year. Maybe the second will go to the 450th - we shall see. The nice thing about this CD is not just the fact that it brings you John's amazing vocals (John is not a youngster, but his vocals are those of a 25 year old), but it also is one of the most relaxing and romantic CDs I've listened to since the heyday of Charles Cermele! The disc simply overflows with romance and soothing song. Many years ago - and I am talking many years here - when I first moved into Manhattan, I had a few records (yes, Virginia, there was a time before CDs) that were in this style, and when I had company for the evening (or hopefully longer) I had a stack of these vinyl discs on the player that would last several hours. John's CD has been out for a while (someone loaned me their copy when it first came out and I loved it), and you can find out more and where to buy it at http://www.johndemarcoentertainment.com/ .

For the second CD, I have a real exclusive CD scoop - I was the first person to actually receive a copy! I ran into Baby Jane Dexter on Friday night and the first copies of her brand new CD "You're Following Me!" had just been delivered and she happened to have a few - and gave me one (the heat seal on the cellophane wrapper was still slightly warm, I think). It was recorded live earlier this year when her acclaimed show of the same name played at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM. It is amazing! A few years ago I was in Connecticut and Baby Jane Dexter was performing that night. I ran into an old friend and invited - no insisted - that he join me for her show. He had never seen Baby Jane in performance, and was completely blown away. One critic has called her "a force of nature" and that just about sums it up. Part tornado, part soothing breeze, part earthquake, part glorious sunrise, Baby Jane is one of the most exciting - and original - performers on the cabaret scene today. She returns to the METROPOLITAN ROOM for three Saturdays in December starting this Saturday, the 15th. I invite - no I insist - that you go to one (or more) of these shows, to see exactly what this genuine icon is all about. And if you are unable to get to any of the shows (shame on you) buy this CD as soon as it becomes available where you live. It almost totally captures the essence of a Baby Jane Dexter live performance.

Looking for that special CD to give as a holiday gift this year? Check out the CDs being offered year round on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website - with new CDs added almost weekly and starring the 2007-2008 members. Each member has the chance to promote at least one CD on the website (GOLD members can promote up to 5). I have another 4 or 5 to add this week, so check the list often. Just click on the button at the top of every page marked CABARET CDs.

It is January-February "White Sale" time at CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE - an extra 5% discount on all cabaret event advertising if you pay using PayPal and also offer a discount of no less than $5 to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE (current membership over 400!). The only ads excluded are the $25 per week home-page side-bar ads. This is in addition to any other discounts and/or rebates available to HOTLINE members. Ads can start no earlier than December 30th but can run through March 15th. Certain ad placements are limited, so please e-mail me first, especially if you want a SUPER-SIDE-BAR banner - limited to 2 a week - some weeks are already reserved for at least 1 space. For example, a GOLD member (already getting a 20% discount on banners) could run a SUPERSIZE banner for 4 weeks for less than $40 per week! A SILVER member, placing an ad for the first time this membership year, could run the same banner for $45 per week. Without discounts the cost in either case would be $55 per week. Ads must be paid in full before running and must start their run no later March 2nd to fulfill the 2-week minimum requirement. E-mail me for details.

SPECIAL TO ALL MEMBERS: There will be a special mailing to all members tomorrow - December 11th - with some important information. This will be incorporated into the MIDWEEK issue of the newsletter, to be sent out to all subscribers on December 13th.

There are only four issues left of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE newsletter before 2008 comes rolling in. I have some important things to write about before 2007 comes to a close. I hope you will find these final 2007 issues interesting and informative. With very little news to write about, I will take the opportunity to "editorialize" about the state of cabaret as we enter a new year.

Until Thursday then.

NOW FOR SOME NEWS ABOUT CABARET
In an effort to cut down on "repeated" events, except for announcements of programs offered by cabaret membership organizations, and shows where guests change regularly, cabaret news items will usually appear just once in the newsletter in abbreviated form and linked to a full article on the CABARET NEWS page of the appropriate location on the website. Events advertised on the website will be mentioned in every issue, and events offering discounts to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE are mentioned in every MIDWEEK issue.

I remind you again that all the news items from these newsletters are "accumulated" in the Datebook/Diary on the website (just click on the flash button at the top of every page on the website marked DATEBOOK/DIARY. So, we skip a number of dates on our listings above, not because there are no cabaret events those nights, but simply because I didn't receive news about any NEW cabaret events for those nights not already listed in previous issues.

ABOUT CABARET NEWS IN THE NEWSLETTER, BLOG AND WEBSITES
How do you get an item posted in the CABARET NEWS section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website and in the newsletter? It is really quite simple.

Just e-mail me a press release of at least four or five paragraphs, giving the complete information on your show, CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available. Please send me complete information - and do not merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference to a website. By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from the press releases I receive before using the item on my website or in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the four or more paragraphs. If you don't have a press release, just click here: http://www.svhamstra.com/PressRelease1.shtml and fill out the information as completely as possible - or use the items asked for as a guide to the information I need.

Just send in your press release or listings request in simple txt format if possible (the format I write these issues in and use for the website), and send any photos as attachments, not imbedded within the e-mail. And, please, please don't send, instead of a press release, one of those e-mails with all those annoying html links (with multi-columns, embedded photos, distracting backgrounds, etc.) Do not send simply a .jpg of your post card. Do not send us one of those "e-vite" things that require us to "click to open" and lead to a web page somewhere. I never open them! The more information the better - it is easier for me to trim the release than to hunt and google websites for more information.

We usually run articles about 2 to 3 weeks before event date if possible so it is wisest to send your release about 4 weeks in advance. Because of the large number of items received, we can only use news of event just once, so we try not to get too far ahead in the news. There are a few exceptions to the "just once" rule:

+++ If the event is advertised on the website it will be repeated in every issue of the newsletter

+++ If the event offers a discount to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE it will be included in each MID-WEEK issue of the newsletter.

+++ Major benefits where ALL proceeds are given to the charity named will be mentioned in every issue as well as major cabaret events like cabaret festivals and galas.

+++ We also include at least once each week those regular (monthly, weekly, etc.) events with guests who change each performance, like SETH'S BROADWAY CHATTERBOX, BOB EGAN'S MONDAY SHOWCASE and the like.

SPECIAL TO ALL SUBSCRIBERS REGARDING NEWSLETTER SCHEDULE CHANGE
Since both Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve fall on Monday this year, there will be no CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE newsletters send on those days. Instead of Thursday issues on the 27th of January and 3rd of January, special MIDWEEK DOUBLE ISSUES will be sent on Wednesday the 26th of December and Wednesday the 2nd of January 2008. The following week we will resume our regular twice-weekly schedule on Mondays and Thursdays.

IT'S TIME TO GO
At the top of this newsletter I promised that you would read things in this issue you will not find published anywhere else. Did I keep my promise?

I realize that there is probably far more information here than you might be able to digest in one reading, but please keep in mind that for the performers mentioned, CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE is one of the few publications that spread the word about their shows and performances. To them, that item about their show is most important, and the fact that every issue published is also posted on my website and on the blog means two additional places where the show information can be found by fans and search engines (Google, etc.) alike. Your banner ads and membership donations make this all possible.

One more reminder - all current memberships for CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE expired on Thursday, July 5th 2007. You can renew (or get a new) membership almost instantly on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.svhamstra.com/ ), using a credit card. Just click on the button at the top of every page of the website marked JOIN HERE. Or you can mail your check, made out simply to Stu Hamstra to 676A Ninth Avenue #120, New York, NY 10036. Memberships are available at several levels with varying benefits. Basic membership (which can be upgraded at any time with full credit) is $20 (SILVER). You membership dollars support the website, the newsletter, the blog and other activities of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE. Support CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE as it promotes the art and artists of cabaret.

With this issue I have completely covered all the press and news released received to date through January 28th - if your item hasn't appeared please resend. Don't forget - no issues on Mondays the 24th & 31st because of the holidays.

And that is just about the way it was.

Hugs & Stuff,

STU
