HERE & THERE
It is 11:00 am as I write this paragraph. It is 33 degrees outside
right now (interestingly, the outdoor thermometer outside my window,
here on the 10th floor on the lower east side of Manhattan says 38
degrees). Yesterday they forecast up to 7 inches of snow for today.
This morning the forecast was revised to 1 inch accumulation, with
a mix of rain, snow and sleet starting around 11:00 am. That uncertainty
is important since it so affects the entertainment industry in this
town, including cabaret.
Since I don't own a car and depend entirely on public
transportation, the weather only becomes a factor when I have to
walk any distances from transportation means to venue, and fortunately
most business in town keep their sidewalks clear and salted. I am
also fortunate to have a bus stop virtually just outside the entrance
to my building where I can catch a cross-town bus to the West Village
(1/2 block from THE DUPLEX, for example), anther crosstown bus that
takes me west down 14th Street, with stops where I can in a few
steps be on just about every uptown-downtown subway or bus in the
city.
But those icy sidewalks send chills up and down my
spine, so I will be glued to the weather channel starting around
4:00 pm as I finalize my cabaret plans for tonight. With my normal
guide and sidekick Daniel off to DC again, I will have to venture
forth alone the next few days - its always nice to have an extra
pair of eyes along to watch for the icy patches.
I had to cut back on my plans for the early part of the week, not
because of the weather but for financial reasons. Once again I was
trapped in that "time warp" between rent payment and social security
check receipt, and a very unexpected expense on Monday night wiped
out any extra cash I had on hand - in fact I had to borrow $40 from
a cabaret friend on Monday night just to have enough cash to make
it to Wednesday when the government sends me my monthly stipend.
I did get up to DILLON'S to catch David Auxier's "Family
Affair" holiday show at 7:30 pm. I had missed it when it was performed
earlier this fall. The show was truly a treat. More a revue than
a one-man show, members of the cast included one familiar performer,
Hector Coris plus some very talented folks I had never seen before:
Steve Cancel, Suzanne Scott, David Wells and Darlene Majewski. The
show included a number of original tunes by several members of the
cast, and it was truly a fun evening - entertainment wise. It was
not so much fun in other ways. The room wasn't ready when the cast
arrived, and the room was opened a but late. The show was therefor
delayed and didn't start until nearly 7:50 pm - a good 20 minutes
late. I had reservations for a 9:00 pm show at THE BEECHMAN (a good
12 blocks south and 1 long block west) so naturally I was constantly
looking at the clock. It was another 20 minutes into the show before
the waiter realized (when I tugged his sleeve as he passed) that
he had not taken our order! Finally at 8:50 pm Daniel and I decided
we had to get going, assuming that the BEECHMAN show would probably
start at 9:50-9:10 pm. (Note to self: Shows at the BEECHMAN rarely
start late).
What happened next ruined my night - and probably
my whole week. I always check in advance with the booking manager
at each club exactly what the "press" policy is. Each club has their
own rules and regulations. Sometimes that policy is not explained
thoroughly to the employees, so I was stunned to receive a bill
as I left, for over $60 - full charge for drinks for Daniel and
me, full cover charge for Daniel and me and even gratuity added
in (I got the bill outside the room and had already left a tip on
the table). I didn't expect this, since the booking manager at DILLON'S
had assured me that I would only be charged for any food I would
order when attending a show at the club. I had just $60 in my pocket
and about $6 left on my credit card. Naturally, I was not happy
(you can interpret this description any way you wish).
I was able to convince them to remove the cover charge
(I assured them that performer would have agreed to this) and the
tip (I left more on the table than was on the bill) and paid the
balance ($34). However, it didn't stop there. The booking manager
was not in the house, and the "designated" manager throughout the
discussion was screaming, calling me names, and harassing me - and
she continued even after I had paid the bill. I have never seen
a service employee act like this - she even "stirred up" the three
customers at the bar who began shouting names at us as well - like
we were trying to cheat the club or steal something. Daniel decided
to exit - not trusting self-control of his Latino temper - and the
woman continued screaming epithets at him, following him to the
door. It was like something you might see on uTube! Totally bizarre!
I am not Latino, but even I finally "lost my cool" as I left (even
after the bill was paid the lady (?) and the others at the bar continued
their diatribe) and turned and loudly described everyone at the
bar using the appellation of the hind-quarters of a donkey.
In over 17 years of writing about cabaret, I have
never had an experience like this. Needless to say, if you are planning
a cabaret show at this club in the future, you should not expect
me to attend.
I know in myself that it is not a good idea to attempt to "review"
a show when you are not in a good mood. I have skipped several cabaret
shows in the past because I realized that events (usually not even
remotely connected to cabaret) had put me into an angry or depressed
mood that would naturally color my opinion of the show I planned to
see. But even my anger did not discourage me from walking the 2/3
mile or so to the BEECHMAN to catch (for the second time) Ben Rauch's
very funny "Horace Vanderveer" show. (Daniel had gone on ahead). I
guess the walk calmed me down. The show had already started when I
arrived (about 9:10 pm).
If I were to compile a list of the most entertaining,
fun-filled, and genuinely great cabaret shows for 2007, this show
would stand near or at the top. Rauch is a funny guy - the many
performers in the show (probably close to 20 including the band)
are perfect in the parts they play, and most important, the writing
is so well crafted I returned this second time because I knew I
missed some of the cleverness the first time around. There is one
more performance of this show - at least in 2007 - and that is this
Saturday December 15th at 2:00 pm. (I may just attend once more
myself).
I had planned to catch Donna Moore's terrific "Cougar" show in Tuesday
night, and Terrell Baker's "Soul, Interrupted" show on Wednesday night,
both at DON'T TELL MAMA, but quite frankly, I was broke, tired and
"burned out." A few years ago a fellow reviewer (and former cabaret
performer) had a similar experience at a club that is no longer in
business and was so disgusted with the way he was treated he decided
to quit writing about cabaret completely - and I only vary rarely
see him attending cabaret shows anymore. Now I realize how he felt
then. It is so sad, because this art form is so fragile as it is,
and there are fewer and fewer folks writing about cabaret today, and
fewer media outlets than ever covering cabaret.
Granted, there a some folks out there who start a
website and call themselves "critics" and figure they are then entitled
to free drinks and free meals and free shows. But the cabaret booking
managers know who they are, and can set their press policies accordingly.
But when folks who are dedicated to promote and nourish cabaret
- bringing customers in the cabaret rooms and encouraging performers
to continue in their craft - begin to feel unwelcome in particular
venues, it is the clubs and the performers who suffer. There are
two other clubs in town I rarely go to, not because of bad treatment,
but because they have no clear "press" policy. I never know when
I attend shows exactly what it is going to cost me, so I skip attending
shows there. I am on a very tight budget so I have to spend every
dollar carefully. I don't spend so many nights a week attending
cabaret shows, and so many hours a day writing about cabaret performers,
simply to get free drinks. I hope everyone understands that. I attend
shows I know I can afford in clubs where I feel welcome. It is that
simple.
In 12 days it will be Christmas - and I need only 19 more folks to
join as members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE to reach 430 and break the
membership record set in 2004 of 427 members. If you have not joined
for the 2007-2008 membership year, I hope you will do so this week.
Our subscription list for the free twice-weekly newsletter has topped
the 2,500 mark for the very first time ever, and visits to the website
continue to increase. But to keep this all going, we need your support
- via banner advertising and membership donations. Even if you can't
afford the basic $20 membership, drop me a line. Many members, when
they join, include an extra $5 or more to allow us to give "free"
memberships to folks experiencing financial hardships.
Weather update: It is now 12:30 pm, and it has dropped to 30 degrees,
and sleet or freezing rain is hitting my window. Oh dear, I have to
get to the bank before 3:00 pm.
Looking for that special CD to give as a holiday gift this year? Check
out the CDs being offered year round on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
website - with new CDs added almost weekly and starring the 2007-2008
members. Each member has the chance to promote at least one CD on
the website (GOLD members can promote up to 5). I have another 4 or
5 to add this week, so check the list often. Just click on the button
at the top of every page marked CABARET CDs.
I never got to send out that special message on Tuesday to all members
of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE - so hopefully it will go out tomorrow.
Then I will include a summary of the letter in the Monday issue on
the 17th. The "working title" of the message is "... and that's what
it's all about!" Remember, only three more issues left in 2007 - Monday
the 17th, Thursday the 20th and a double-issue Wednesday the 26th.
It is January-February "White Sale" time at CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
- an extra 5% discount on all cabaret event advertising if you pay
using PayPal and also offer a discount of no less than $5 to members
of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE (current membership over 400!). The only
ads excluded are the $25 per week home-page side-bar ads. This is
in addition to any other discounts and/or rebates available to HOTLINE
members. Ads can start no earlier than December 30th but can run through
March 15th. Certain ad placements are limited, so please e-mail me
first, especially if you want a SUPER-SIDE-BAR banner - limited to
2 a week - some weeks are already reserved for at least 1 space. For
example, a GOLD member (already getting a 20% discount on banners)
could run a SUPERSIZE banner for 4 weeks for less than $40 per week!
A SILVER member, placing an ad for the first time this membership
year, could run the same banner for $45 per week. Without discounts
the cost in either case would be $55 per week. Ads must be paid in
full before running and must start their run no later March 2nd to
fulfill the 2-week minimum requirement. E-mail me for details.
Well, the big hand is on the 12 and the little hand is on the 1, so
it is time to get this issue out. I was urged by some folks I shared
the DILLON'S story with not to discuss in this issue the rather dramatic
events of Monday evening, and I have read and reread this section
twice, deleting and editing here and there when I thought I was letting
too much emotion get into my writing. But a lot of cabaret is about
emotion, so I decided to write about the event anyway. I have decided
not to let the event discourage me, but rather to educate me. I am
not too old to learn new insights.
Until Monday.
NOW FOR SOME NEWS ABOUT CABARET SHOWS AND STUFF
In an effort to cut down on "repeated" events, except for announcements
of programs offered by cabaret membership organizations, and shows
where guests change regularly, cabaret news items will usually appear
just once in the newsletter in abbreviated form, in chronological
order where possible, and linked to a full article on the CABARET
NEWS page of the appropriate location on the website.
IMPORTANT: All the news items from these newsletters are "accumulated"
in the Datebook/Diary on the website (just click on the flash button
at the top of every page on the website marked DATEBOOK/DIARY. So,
we skip a number of dates on our listings above, not because there
are no cabaret events those nights, but simply because I didn't receive

REMINDER REGARDING CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE DISCOUNTS
To be eligible for a listing on the MEMBER DEALS page you must send
in your flier, press release and/or other promotional materials clearly
showing the discount offer. That information will be used as the basis
for the MEMBER DEALS page notice, as well as for the newsletter listing.
Please be sure to check with the venue where you are performing to
be sure that these discounts will be honored. Any member who is denied
a properly listed CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE discount should notify me
at once. I cannot guarantee that the discount will be honored, but
I can take steps to contact the parties involved and publish the facts
in the newsletter and remove the listing from the MEMBER DEALS page.
ABOUT CABARET NEWS IN THE NEWSLETTER AND ON THE WEBSITE
How do you get an item posted in the CABARET NEWS section of the CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE website and in the newsletter? It is really quite simple.
Just e-mail me a press release of at least four or
five paragraphs, giving the complete information on your show, CD
release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or
gif format if available. Please send me complete information - and
do not merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference to a
website. By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from the
press releases I receive before using the item on my website or
in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the
four or more paragraphs. If you don't have a press release, just
and fill out the information as completely as possible - or use
the items asked for as a guide to the information I need.
Just send in your press release or listings request
in simple txt format if possible (the format I write these issues
in and use for the website), and send any photos as attachments,
not imbedded within the e-mail. And, please, please don't send,
instead of a press release, one of those e-mails with all those
annoying html links (with multi-columns, embedded photos, distracting
backgrounds, etc.) Do not send simply a .jpg of your post card.
Do not send us one of those "e-vite" things that require us to "click
to open" and lead to a web page somewhere. I never open them! The
more information the better - it is easier for me to trim the release
than to hunt and google websites for more information.
We usually run articles about 3 weeks before event
date if possible so it is wisest to send your release about 4 weeks
in advance. Because of the large number of items received, we can
only use news of event just once, so we try not to get too far ahead
in the news. There are a few exceptions to the "just once" rule:
++ If the event is advertised on the website it will
be repeated in each MONDAY issue of the newsletter
++ If the event offers a discount to members of CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE it will be included in the DISCOUNTS section of each
MID-WEEK issue of the newsletter.
++ Major benefits where ALL proceeds are given to
the charity named will be mentioned in every issue as well as major
cabaret events like cabaret festivals and galas.
++ We also include at least once each week those regular
(monthly, weekly, etc.) events with guests who change each performance,
like SETH'S BROADWAY CHATTERBOX, BOB EGAN'S MONDAY SHOWCASE and
the like.
IT'S TIME TO GO
Near the top of this newsletter I promised that you would read things
in this issue you will not find published anywhere else. Did I keep
my promise?
I realize that there is probably far more information here than you
might be able to digest in one reading, but please keep in mind that
for the performers mentioned, CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE is one of the
few publications that spread the word about their shows and performances.
To them, that item about their show is most important, and the fact
that every issue published is also posted on my website means another
place where they can be found by fans and search engines (Google,
etc.) alike.
One more reminder - all current memberships for CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
