HERE & THERE
I usually start off the newsletter with a feature story - a "blockbuster"
show or event that I want to call special attention to - but so far
it hasn't arrived. So, it is 12:15 pm and I need to finish this newsletter
off and get it on its way. Actually, very few new news items have
come in over the past three or four days. I mentioned in the issue
last Thursday that my "news inbox" was empty of all items through
January 28 and now I extend that to news through the end of January.
I don't like to get too far ahead because under the new system, unless
you are running a banner ad, your item appears only once, and then
is added to the DIARY/DATEBOOK section. Show giving discounts to members
of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE will still be published in the MIDWEEK issue,
usually published on Thursdays.
There was a time when I would scan the websites of
the various clubs and the use information found there to make up
items to add to the newsletter - but I no longer have time to do
that. If you wish your item to appear, it is best for you or your
publicist to send it in - as complete as possible. See the item
at the bottom of this issue to find out what information I need
to use your item. And once again, do not depend on the venue where
you will be performing to do your publicity for you. They mainly
provide this service to performances in which they have a vested
interest - in other words, performers that have been given a guarantee.
Even then, you or your publicist have to give them the necessary
information for their publicity work. There is no truth to the saying
"build a good show and they will come." There was an ad agency in
New Jersey when I was living there that had the following slogan
on their billboard: "Unseen, Untold Means Unsold."
Bring on the brimstone! Saturday night and into Sunday we experienced
a weird series of weather changes - snow, turning to freezing rain,
turning to rain, turning to drizzle and all followed by gusting winds
of up to 50 mph. There are several tall apartment buildings around
be, and I would imagine (though I didn't dare go out there) that between
the buildings the wind gusts were even greater. In fact late in the
evening there was a crew working a few buildings over clearing up
debris that had blown off the scaffolding on the side of a building
undergoing re-pointing.
The combination of low finances at the beginning of
the week and bad weather at the end of the week meant I had a lot
of time on my hands to do some catchup. Between the computer needing
repair, and two very special projects, I noticed that I had not
added a single details news item to the website in nearly three
weeks! The newsletters all went out on time, and I was able to keep
the DIARY/DATEBOOK updated each day, and even built a special page
for Holiday Themed shows and New Year's Eve events. So, over the
past four days or so I was able to add 16 news items that we long
overdue to be added. I have four more old ones to add (they have
already been mentioned in the newsletters and added to the DIARY/DATEBOOK)
and 3 more brand new ones to add today. I really felt good to get
that work out of the way.
At the same time I was finally able to get that special letter out
to members and some former members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE written
and sent - I have, as promised, included a copy of the letter below.
Interestingly, since the letter went out (on Saturday afternoon) I
already received 5 e-mails from folks out there with stories similar
to the ones included in the letter. And after I sent it out, I myself
thought of another bunch I could have - and probably should have -
included. I am constantly amazed (and gratified) by the different
ways that CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE touches the lives of its subscribers
and readers.
Before the end of the year comes, and I forget to do this, I have
some special thank-you's to include. I was reminded of this when I
put David Pellegrene's new SUPER SIDE-BAR ad on the website this morning.
It involves actually changing nearly 2000 web pages, and then uploading
them to the web server. Don't worry, the job is mostly automated -
it just means I have to wait to do anything else on the computer while
it is happening. David has been a great supporter of the website and
the newsletter with his ads, and I want to send a special thanks.
There are several more folks who have been great supporters
as well - Jamie deRoy, Marcus Simeone and THE METROPOLITAN ROOM
have all run banner ads on the website for the entire year 2007
(Jamie has run a banner ad continuously since the website began!)
Another strong supporter has been Siegel Presents - Scott & Barbara
Siegel, who will start running their banner for the 2008 Nightlife
Awards at the beginning of the year. Thanks one and all.
Someone complained in an e-mail the other day that
I seem to write a lot and often about these folks and several others
who have run banners this year. I offer no apology. I am not wealthy
by any means - this publication and website are not funded by an
organization or corporation. CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE is entirely
supported by membership donations and website advertising.
Regarding the 2008 Nightlife Awards, I am honored once again to have
been chosen as a "judge" in the Cabaret division. The big event will
be held on Monday January 28th at 7:00 pm at THE TOWN HALL (123 West
43rd Street, NYC - 212-997-1929 - http://www.the-townhall-nyc.org/
). Each year the Nightlife Awards celebrate the best in cabaret, comedy
& jazz, chosen by members the press who cover these events in NYC.
For reasons I will discuss in a future issue, a Nightlife Award has
become the premier live entertainment award presented in this town.
I hope everyone who is able to make this year's show has ordered their
tickets by now - it is less than 5 weeks away and the best seats will
soon be sold out.
I forgot to mention something about the other great
Siegel Presents show that I enjoy so much - the Broadway Unplugged
show that Daniel and I attended a while back. I ordered my tickets
quite late (the Saturday before the Monday event) and I need to
be seated on an aisle where I can stretch my left leg from time
to time - all because of that accident I had. So I was happy to
get such a seat the night of the show - but in row "P" - about 2
rows from the back of the hall on the mail floor (I guess they call
that "in the Orchestra"). No microphones, seated almost in the last
row, under the overhang of the balcony. Amazingly, the sound was
almost as clear - if not as clear - as the times in the past when
I was seated in row F or G! There is something about this 1500 seat
concert space that is unique and incredible!
I want to remind you again that all the news items from these newsletters
are "accumulated" in the Datebook/Diary on the website (just click
on the flash button at the top of every page on the website marked
DATEBOOK/DIARY). So, we skip a number of dates on our listings below
not because there are no cabaret events those nights, but simply because
I didn't receive news about any NEW cabaret events for those nights
not already listed in previous issues.
In 15 days it will be Christmas - and I need only 15 more folks to
join as members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE to reach 430 and break the
membership record set in 2004 of 427 members. If you have not joined
for the 2007-2008 membership year, I hope you will do so this week.
Our subscription list for the free twice-weekly newsletter has topped
the 2500 mark for the very first time ever, and visits to the website
continue to increase. But to keep this all going, we need your support
- via banner advertising and membership donations. Even if you can't
afford the basic $20 membership, drop me a line. Many members, when
they join, include an extra $5 or more to allow us to give "free"
memberships to folks experiencing financial hardships.
I get two or three CDs in the mail each week - and now that my computer
is working up to snuff again, and I have been able to rendezvous with
Trudi Mann who found my iPod shuffle which I left at BUTTERFIELD 8
when attending Carolyn Lee Jones' show many months ago, I always load
one or two CDs before I leave the house to enjoy on the bus or subway.
Many times I forget which recording I am carrying - the shuffle has
no screen to display the description of the song.
Last night I was taken aback by such a beautiful voice
and such a clearly professional performance, I had to double check
when I returned home as to who I was listening to. The CD was Linda
Ciofalo's "Sun Set," which I had received just a few days earlier.
Everything about this recording is so perfect - the vocals, the
songs, the arrangements and the band. You can snag yourself a copy
on her website (http://www.lindaciofalo.com/music.htm
) or at Amazon.com, CDBaby.com or via iTunes. Normally I delete
the CDs I have listened to and add new ones each morning, but this
particular CD is traveling with me for a second day - I want to
find one track to keep on the shuffle along with the two other songs
I keep with me all the time: DC Anderson's "i am still" and Marcus
Simeone's rendition of "Alone Again."
Looking for that special CD to give as a holiday gift this year? Check
out the CDs being offered year round on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
website - with new CDs added almost weekly and starring the 2007-2008
members. Each member has the chance to promote at least one CD on
the website (GOLD members can promote up to 5). I have another 4 or
5 to add this week, so check the list often. Just click on the button
at the top of every page marked CABARET CDs.
It is January-February "White Sale" time at CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
- an extra 5% discount on all cabaret event advertising if you pay
using PayPal and also offer a discount of no less than $5 to members
of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE (current membership over 400!). The only
ads excluded are the $25 per week home-page side-bar ads. This is
in addition to any other discounts and/or rebates available to HOTLINE
members. Ads can start no earlier than December 30th but can run through
March 15th. Certain ad placements are limited, so please e-mail me
first, especially if you want a SUPER-SIDE-BAR banner - limited to
2 a week - some weeks are already reserved for at least 1 space. For
example, a GOLD member (already getting a 20% discount on banners)
could run a SUPERSIZE banner for 4 weeks for less than $40 per week!
A SILVER member, placing an ad for the first time this membership
year, could run the same banner for $45 per week. Without discounts
the cost in either case would be $55 per week. Ads must be paid in
full before running and must start their run no later March 2nd to
fulfill the 2-week minimum requirement. E-mail me for details.
The following is from a special e-mail sent over the weekend to current
and former members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE and reprinted here as
promised.
... and that's what it's all about!
A frantic Marian Heller sends me an e-mail from Seattle
- she is from NYC and has been hired to perform there the next day,
but her musical director, who was supposed to fly in from NYC, had
to cancel out at the last minute and she is totally at a loss as
to what to do. CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE has a long time member and
performer friend living in Seattle who goes by one name - Arnaldo.
He gets the frantic forwarded e-mail, and posts a message on his
local cabaret performers' bulletin board. Within a few hours Marian
is rehearsing with her new accompanist. The show goes on. The audience
is thrilled. The booking is "saved."
Singer/pianist/seafarer Sammy Goldstein, a CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE charter member, is off on another cruise ship job
- this series of cruises will continue until March 2, 2009. The
itinerary reads like a bookshelf of FODOR Travel Guide Books - Diamond
Princess (Hawaii), November 18, 2007 - January 2, 2008; Royal Princess
(Amazon River / South America) January 7 - March 3, 2008; Pacific
Princess (China, Southeast Asia, India, Egypt, the Mediterranean,
England), March 15 - June 1, 2008; Emerald Princess (Greek Isles
& the Mediterranean), June 2 - July 2, 2008; Diamond Princess (Alaska,
Russia, Southeast Asia, China, Australia), September 6 - November
23, 2008; Star Princess (Southeast Asia, China), December 8, 2008
- March 2, 2009. Great work if you can get it! The work is rewarding
and seeing the world is wonderful, but he'll miss all the happenings
in Manhattan. But CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE keeps him up to date.
Singer/recording artist Marilyn Harris moves to Phoenix
from California. She misses cabaret and jazz clubs so she and a
friend start an open-mic series on Wednesday nights, and she writes
to CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE to get the word out. A few months later
Judy Roberts moves from Chicago to Arizona as well. She's doing
her debut show there ("Santa Babies") on the 20th of December. Folks
all over the world read about both events in CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE.
Annie Hughes moved to Wisconsin a few years back -
but you can take the gal miles away from cabaret, but you can't
get cabaret out of the gal. She returns to NYC to perform once or
twice a year, and runs a banner ad on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
website to let all her friends and fans know about the show, and
sells out each time. Now she is bringing cabaret to her part of
Wisconsin! She books a local restored "opera house" for two nights,
lets the world know about it via CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, sells out
the first night (300 seats) and enjoys standing ovations and 2 encores.
A huge snow storm arrives the next morning and the house is smaller
the second night (still over 50) and gets another standing ovation.
She writes; "This is a great pre-cursor to the possibility of a
summer series, like the Brownville Concert Series, here in Wisconsin.
I'll keep you apprised of our fund-raising efforts."
Vocalist Alice Frazier is performed last Saturday
night in Erie, PA - it was her annual holiday show. She travels
several times a year (a 5-hour trip each way) to attend cabaret
shows in NYC and regularly puts on shows of her own. She lets her
friends, both in NYC and western PA know about her shows through
CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE. And she keeps in touch with cabaret all
over the world through our newsletters and website.
Charter member Joey Nigro-Nilsen lives in the Syracuse,
NY (not a hotbed of cabaret activity) and she and her husband have
been performing in the upstate NY area for several years - mostly
pleasing the audiences there with pop and country songs. But they
discovered that by injecting into their sets a cabaret/"Great American
Songbook" tune from time to time, folks began to take a real interest
in Cole Porter, Johnny Mercer and Noel Coward songs. A full cabaret
show is in the works. For them, CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE is a window
to the world of cabaret. The musical pair even recorded a "demo"
of "His Eye Is On the Sparrow" especially for me to show their appreciation.
Denise Whittier lives in Dover, NH - far away from
the "big city lights" yet not so far as to keep her from performing
and introducing cabaret to folks in the Granite State. Like Alice,
Joey, Annie and Marilyn (and CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE) she spreads
the news, supports the artists in the area, and demonstrates to
all that cabaret is alive and well, and not just living in NYC.
I could go on - Lori Hafer and her musical family,
in Florida; Shari Upbin and Sandi Durell, bringing their "Divas"
show to Florida, too; Francesca Amari in Grand Rapids, MI; Sharlan
Douglas in the Detroit MI area; Jay Kerr, who has opened a cabaret
venue in upstate Salem NY (as they say, he liked the place and bought
the place); the late Barbara Good, who helped the folks in Wheeling,
W. Va. appreciate the art of cabaret for over 20 years, virtually
single handed; Kit Lo, in the Air Force, stationed at the top of
the US-48 in Minot, ND who reads about his performing friends back
home via the newsletter; Laura Ainsworth, Thomas Grounds, Hector
Garcia, Carolyn Lee Jones, Ken Slavin, Debbie Boily and others -
all living in Texas and keeping cabaret alive in the Lone Star State;
all keeping in touch via CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE.
He is from the world of opera, but Mike Blaney also
produces and performs in cabaret events in Washington DC and, along
with other members of the DC Cabaret Network, promotes the art of
cabaret in the nation's capitol. Now, for the first time in years,
a new cabaret venue has opened in town, giving Mike and dozens of
other performers in the area a true cabaret room to host their shows.
And folks all over the world hear about it in CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE.
He's had to move quickly out of two venues in the
past few years, but Bob Egan presses on in the New Hope, PA area,
bringing cabaret opportunities to folks in the area, keeping the
art alive, as are Paul L Martin in London and Carolyn Wehner in
Milwaukee. All get much of their cabaret news and are able to get
their own news published via CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE.
I've started a list I probably can never finish -
every time I think of another name it reminds me of two more. The
cabaret organizations in Boston, Washington, Chicago, Los Angeles,
Grand Rapids, Texas, Seattle, and elsewhere; the cabaret workshops
at YALE, in Colorado, in NYC & Long Island, in San Francisco, St.
Louis, Chicago and more; the cabaret festivals and galas; from Australia
to South Africa to London; from West Coast to East Coast; from Florida
to Maine; from Chicago to New Orleans; CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE reaches
out to them all - and relays the news from one to the other. There
is even a reader in Brazil and another in Japan!
CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE is at the mid-point of its
18th year of spreading the news of the art and the artists of cabaret.
We are on the brink of setting a record for memberships (today we
are at 415 - in our best year ever we counted 427 memberships).
We passed the 2,500 mark of newsletter subscribers for the first
time a few weeks back - sent twice a week all over the world. The
website now has 6,200 pages of news, views and reviews - we are
now adding about 1000 pages a year. Daily visitors to the website
- currently around 6000 - continue to increase. Two celebrated cabaret
writers - John Hoglund in NYC and Carla Gordon in Chicago are regular
contributors. If we can afford it, another one or two will be added
in 2008.
You see, CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE is not after the accolades
and awards. Its not after "power" and "influence." CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE is dedicated simply to providing and communicating the news
of cabaret, so that folks in Hawaii can be encouraged and inspired
by the folks in Boston; a performer "going it alone" in Seattle
can read about that lady in New Hampshire; the gal in Wisconsin
can let her friends in NYC know what's happening in her state besides
cheese & sausage.
And all of this is possible, and CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
can only grow larger and continue to exist and grow, because of
you - our members and advertisers who supply the necessary funding
and the wonderful performers, subscribers and readers who make it
all worth doing. It gets more expensive each year, the bank account
runs dry from time to time, but amazingly an "angel" always seems
to come through to support the work - usually by complete surprise.
Thanks once more for your readership, your memberships,
your advertising payments and your encouraging support. In this
holiday season the world pauses to reflect on the old and look forward
to the new - pausing for that fraction of a second that separates
2007 from 2008. Our goal in 2008 is the same as it has always been,
for over 17 years: to promote the art, and the artists, of this
most unique of art forms. If you are not yet a member, we're hoping
you will join us in this crusade this year.
... and that's what it's all about!
There are only two issues left of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE newsletter
before 2008 comes rolling in. I have some important things to write
about before 2007 comes to a close. I hope you will find these final
2007 issues interesting and informative. With very little news to
write about, I will take the opportunity to "editorialize" about the
state of cabaret as we enter a new year.
Until Thursday then.
NOW FOR SOME NEWS ABOUT CABARET
In an effort to cut down on "repeated" events, except for announcements
of programs offered by cabaret membership organizations, and shows
where guests change regularly, cabaret news items will usually appear
just once in the newsletter in abbreviated form and linked to a full
article on the CABARET NEWS page of the appropriate location on the
website. Events advertised on the website will be mentioned in every
issue, and events offering discounts to members of CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE are mentioned in every MIDWEEK issue.

ABOUT CABARET NEWS IN THE NEWSLETTER, BLOG AND WEBSITES
How do you get an item posted in the CABARET NEWS section of the CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE website and in the newsletter? It is really quite simple.
Just e-mail me a press release of at least four or
five paragraphs, giving the complete information on your show, CD
release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or
gif format if available. Please send me complete information - and
do not merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference to a
website. By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from the
press releases I receive before using the item on my website or
in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the
four or more paragraphs. If you don't have a press release, just
and fill out the information as completely as possible - or use
the items asked for as a guide to the information I need.
IT'S TIME TO GO
At the top of this newsletter I promised that you would read things
in this issue you will not find published anywhere else. Did I keep
my promise?
I realize that there is probably far more information
here than you might be able to digest in one reading, but please
keep in mind that for the performers mentioned, CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE is one of the few publications that spread the word about
their shows and performances. To them, that item about their show
is most important, and the fact that every issue published is also
posted on my website and on the blog means two additional places
where the show information can be found by fans and search engines
(Google, etc.) alike. Your banner ads and membership donations make
this all possible.
One more reminder - all current memberships for CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
expired on Thursday, July 5th 2007. You can renew (or get a new) membership
almost instantly on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.svhamstra.com/
), using a credit card. Just click on the button at the top of every
page of the website marked JOIN HERE. Or you can mail your check,
made out simply to Stu Hamstra to 676A Ninth Avenue #120, New York,
NY 10036. Memberships are available at several levels with varying
benefits. Basic membership (which can be upgraded at any time with
full credit) is $20 (SILVER). You membership dollars support the website,
the newsletter, the blog and other activities of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE.
Support CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE as it promotes the art and artists
of cabaret.
With this issue I have completely covered all the press and news released
received to date concerning events through January - if your item
hasn't appeared please resend. Don't forget - no issue on Mondays
December 24th and 31st because of the holidays.
And that is just about the way it was.
