TODAY'S TOP STORY

SPECIAL INVITATION TO OFFICIAL GRAND OPENING GALA OF BROADWAY BABY
John Hoglund, who writes the AFTER DARK column for CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, has also been serving as a consultant for the recently opened BROADWAY BABY BISTRO & PIANO LOUNGE (318 West 53rd Street, NYC - 212-757-5808 - http://www.broadwaybabybistro.com/ ) located inside The Broadway Comedy Club complex. He asked if I could forward to all subscribers of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE a special invitation to join him and Don Schaffer, who is booking the cabaret shows, and Al Martin, owner of the cabaret/comedy club complex, to the venue's "official" grand opening gala tonight, December 20th at 7:00 pm in the SONGBOOK THEATER.

The show will feature extraordinary singer and Tony nominee ("Smokey Joe's Cafe'") BJ Crosby, along with very special guest Darius De Haas. They will both perform in this special show to celebrate the "official" opening of this exciting new cabaret space. Returning to her beloved soul/jazz roots where she started in New Orleans, Ms. Crosby will sing songs from her new album, "Best of Your Heart," as well as tunes from her musical theater career. Darius De Haas has appeared on Broadway in "Kiss of the Spider Woman" and "Rent" and in numerous other musical theater productions.

There will be a $25 Music Charge and a $15 Food/Drink minimum. There is a convenient parking lot located across the street. Reservations are very important - please call 212-757-5808. For details, see http://www.svhamstra.com/NewsNYC071220Crosby.shtml

After the show, you are invited to join BJ, Darius and the others appearing in the show in the soon-to-be opened BROADWAY BABY PIANO LOUNGE for a grand opening reception - including champagne and refreshments.

HERE & THERE
Before I forget and get into real trouble for forgetting, I want to extend a happy birthday to Maryann Lopinto - the actual date is this Saturday, December 22nd. Maryann is a tireless volunteer and often works behind the scenes at charity events and benefits - or else can be found "in front of the scenes," photographing cabaret and theater events for various publications and websites. She also probably owns a "playbill" from every show ever produced on or off Broadway and she has them because she has attended all of them.

Also, before I forget, I want to wish Merry Christmas and happy holidays to everyone out there reading this issue or visiting the website. Our holiday decorations have been up on the website since around the 1st of December, and this year we finally were able to include falling snow - not static snow - in the background of nearly all the pages. For those readers/visitors south of the equator in South America, South Africa and Australia, who are in the midst of summer right now, check it out - it might help you feel a little cooler.

Thanksgiving was a time to say thank-you, and Christmas is a time to show thank-you by gift-giving. From the busy sidewalks and department stores I have walked through in the past week, gift-giving is pretty popular this year. I understand that the Macy's Department Stores are actually staying open 24 hours a day until Monday the 24th. I wonder if Santa will be there 24 hours as well, taking requests? Who will be minding the workshops?

Looking for that special CD to give as a last minute holiday gift this year? Check out the CDs being offered year round on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website - with new CDs added almost weekly and starring the 2007-2008 members. Each member has the chance to promote at least one CD on the website (GOLD members can promote up to 5). I have another few more to add this week, so check the list often. Just click on the button at the top of every page marked CABARET CDs.

Congratulations to BROADWAY BABY BISTRO on their official "Grand Opening Gala" tonight starting at 7:00 pm with a special cabaret show featuring BJ Crosby with guest Darius deHaas. The club apparently has a goal of "putting the fun back into cabaret" - imagine White Castle Hamburgers, Junior's Cheesecake and Nathan's Hot Dogs are on the snack menu, along with lots of other fun stuff!

Owner Al Martin, cabaret booking manager Don Schaffer and consultant John Hoglund have been working night and day getting this place prepared for the opening tonight - and doing it while comedy and cabaret acts are going on 7 nights a week without interruption. Cabaret performances actually began mid-November, with the opening of OUR SINATRA, which plays several nights and matinees a week in the 170-seat SONGBOOK THEATER. By now all the little kinks and unexpected problems seem to have been solved and corrected.

I hope to get a chance to interview John, Al and/or Don tonight after the show at the reception following in the PIANO LOUNGE - which I am told will be operating as a full-fledged piano bar soon.

I read an article on the internet the other day that said that over 95% of e-mails sent each day are "spam" - and I believe it. This is apparently a vast increase over last year - and I believe that too. I "shut down" last night around 12:30 am - and when I "opened the store" at 6:45 am this morning there were 9 actual and over 900 spam messages to be dealt with. And, as usual, among the messages that were defined by my filters as spam, there was one message that had a cabaret question. That's the reason I sift through them all before deleting. Remember, if you are a subscriber, and use the same e-mail address when sending me something, you will not be blocked by the filter.

In the same way, 90% of the messages posted on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE message board are spam - you never see them because no messages are displayed without manual approval, but if you look at the message numbers at the end of each message title, you will note the missing numbers between messages. The board fills up several times a day - there is room for about 40 new messages, and several times I clear all the bad ones only to discover that 10 minutes later the board is filled again! What a wast of time for both spamer and spamee!

In just a few days it will be Christmas - and I need just 13 more folks to join as members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE to reach my goal of 430 members and break the membership record set in 2004 of 427 members. If you have not joined or re-joined for the 2007-2008 membership year, I hope you will do so before the weekend. Our subscription list for the free twice-weekly newsletter has topped the 2,500 mark for the very first time ever, and visits to the website continue to increase. But to keep this all going, we need your support - via banner advertising and membership donations. Even if you can't afford the basic $20 membership, drop me a line. Many members, when they join, include an extra $5 or more to allow us to give "free" memberships to folks experiencing financial hardships.

It just doesn't seem like it is really Christmas for some reason this year. Of course well all miss the late D.J. Bradley's annual Christmas show. But there are other holiday shows I miss as well - "Miracle on 46th Street" (or other similar streets this show was named after depending on where it played in a particular year) with Mary Foster Conklin, Phillis Pastore and John McMahon - the trio would sing portions of all the traditional TV Christmas specials. Michael Holland and Karen Mack used to to a version of their medley packed Gashole shows called "Gasholy Night." Not this year. Carolyn Montgomery doesn't seem to be "Christmas Carolyn" this year, always a great annual treat featuring a bevy of "Carolyners." Sue Matsuki and Edd Clark reprised their Christmas show of last year - while promoting their fun CD of last year's show. That's the only holiday show I've been to this year.

There are a whole bunch available here in NYC in the next few days - UPTOWN EXPRESS performs their holiday show tonight at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM, and Chris Barrett is there with his "Christmas in the City" show Friday night. Also on Friday night Martha Lorin has a Christmas show at WEILL RECITAL HALL and Bronwyn Rucker's annual holiday show is at THE DUPLEX. Saturday night Karen Mason is at SYMPHONY SPACE with her annual show, and there is a Jazz Nativity show at BIRDLAND on Monday & Tuesday. I know I missed a few more - you can check out all the holiday events that I've been told about all over the world by going to out 2007 HOLIDAY pages on the website at at http://www.svhamstra.com/Holidays2007.shtml

It is January-February "White Sale" time at CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE - an extra 5% discount on all cabaret event advertising if you pay using PayPal and also offer a discount of no less than $5 to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE (current membership over 400!). The only ads excluded are the $25 per week home-page side-bar ads. This is in addition to any other discounts and/or rebates available to HOTLINE members. Ads can start no earlier than December 30th but can run through March 15th. Certain ad placements are limited, so please e-mail me first, especially if you want a SUPER-SIDE-BAR banner - limited to 2 a week - some weeks are already reserved for at least 1 space. For example, a GOLD member (already getting a 20% discount on banners) could run a SUPERSIZE banner for 4 weeks for less than $40 per week! A SILVER member, placing an ad for the first time this membership year, could run the same banner for $45 per week. Without discounts the cost in either case would be $55 per week. Ads must be paid in full before running and must start their run no later March 2nd to fulfill the 2-week minimum requirement. E-mail me for details.

Someone complained to me yesterday that there is too much "fund raising" going on in these newsletters. I apologize but please realize that I must raise at least $600 per week in advertising and/or membership donations to keep current on my expenses. For much of the year, average weekly income from ads and memberships was in the $450 range - for a few weeks this summer it was less than $200. I am far from wealthy, and there is no organization, club or foundation backing this effort.

Just a reminder - no CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE on Monday the 24th! Next issue will be a combined "end of year" newsletter on Wednesday the 26th of December. Then we skip to a special combined "start of year" issue on Wednesday January 2nd before getting back to our regular twice-a-week issues on Mondays & Thursdays.

So, wishing you and yours a most wonderful holiday season. May you get all the gifts you need - and at least some of the gifts you want. And may you be able to give much more than you expect to receive.

Until Wednesday.

NOW FOR SOME NEWS ABOUT CABARET SHOWS AND STUFF
In an effort to cut down on "repeated" events, except for announcements of programs offered by cabaret membership organizations, and shows where guests change regularly, cabaret news items will usually appear just once in the newsletter in abbreviated form, in chronological order where possible, and linked to a full article on the CABARET NEWS page of the appropriate location on the website.

REMINDER REGARDING CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE DISCOUNTS
To be eligible for a listing on the MEMBER DEALS page you must send in your flier, press release and/or other promotional materials clearly showing the discount offer. That information will be used as the basis for the MEMBER DEALS page notice, as well as for the newsletter listing. Please be sure to check with the venue where you are performing to be sure that these discounts will be honored. Any member who is denied a properly listed CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE discount should notify me at once. I cannot guarantee that the discount will be honored, but I can take steps to contact the parties involved and publish the facts in the newsletter and remove the listing from the MEMBER DEALS page.

ABOUT CABARET NEWS IN THE NEWSLETTER AND ON THE WEBSITE
How do you get an item posted in the CABARET NEWS section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website and in the newsletter? It is really quite simple.

Just e-mail me a press release of at least four or five paragraphs, giving the complete information on your show, CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available. Please send me complete information - and do not merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference to a website. By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from the press releases I receive before using the item on my website or in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the four or more paragraphs. If you don't have a press release, just click here: http://www.svhamstra.com/PressRelease1.shtml and fill out the information as completely as possible - or use the items asked for as a guide to the information I need.

Just send in your press release or listings request in simple txt format if possible (the format I write these issues in and use for the website), and send any photos as attachments, not imbedded within the e-mail. And, please, please don't send, instead of a press release, one of those e-mails with all those annoying html links (with multi-columns, embedded photos, distracting backgrounds, etc.) Do not send simply a .jpg of your post card. Do not send us one of those "e-vite" things that require us to "click to open" and lead to a web page somewhere. I never open them! The more information the better - it is easier for me to trim the release than to hunt and google websites for more information.

We usually run articles about 3 weeks before event date if possible so it is wisest to send your release about 4 weeks in advance. Because of the large number of items received, we can only use news of event just once, so we try not to get too far ahead in the news. There are a few exceptions to the "just once" rule:

++ If the event is advertised on the website it will be repeated in each MONDAY issue of the newsletter

++ If the event offers a discount to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE it will be included in the DISCOUNTS section of each MID-WEEK issue of the newsletter.

++ Major benefits where ALL proceeds are given to the charity named will be mentioned in every issue as well as major cabaret events like cabaret festivals and galas.

++ We also include at least once each week those regular (monthly, weekly, etc.) events with guests who change each performance, like SETH'S BROADWAY CHATTERBOX, BOB EGAN'S MONDAY SHOWCASE and the like.

IT'S TIME TO GO
Near the top of this newsletter I promised that you would read things in this issue you will not find published anywhere else. Did I keep my promise?

I realize that there is probably far more information here than you might be able to digest in one reading, but please keep in mind that for the performers mentioned, CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE is one of the few publications that spread the word about their shows and performances. To them, that item about their show is most important, and the fact that every issue published is also posted on my website means another place where they can be found by fans and search engines (Google, etc.) alike.

One more reminder - all current memberships for CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE expired on Thursday, July 5th 2007. You can renew (or get a new) membership almost instantly on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.svhamstra.com/ ), using a credit card. Just one more issue to go in 2007 - is it because I am getting older that time seems to fly by so quickly? There is so much more I want to do - so many more things I want to see - and every morning it seems like there are fewer hours in a day, fewer days in a week, fewer months in a year!

To my immediate family out there in Michigan and Florida, my extra special best Christmas wishes - it has been a tough year, especially for my two brothers-in-law in Michigan - one currently undergoing chemotherapy and the other recovering from a hip operation. My thoughts and special prayers are with you both (and your wives, who are my sisters) - and I am sure that not a few of my readers will join me. Wishing you some special joy and good will for Christmas - and speedy recovery.

Finally, to my "grand niece" (if that's the correct word - I mean the daughter of my niece) in Florida, a special Christmas wish: you are indeed a miracle baby, and you are so fortunate to have family that loves, prays and cares for you as you heal. Your grandma sends me photos of you almost every month and just sent me about 2 dozen of you by the Christmas tree and atop a sled. I hope by next Christmas - if not before - your healing will be complete.

Next issue we will attempt to do a rundown of the major cabaret events of 2007 - if you have a suggestion, send it in. What was the most significant cabaret event for you in 2007?

And that is just about the way it was.

Hugs & Stuff,

STU
