SAD NEWS - PUDGIE! DIES SUDDENLY IN LAS VEGAS
Female comedy icon Pudgie! (Beverly Wines) died peacefully while watching television in her living room at her home in Las Vegas of a heart attack very early Christmas morning, December 25th. She had been appearing as part of a revue at The Flamingo Hotel and was relaxing following two performances. She had also suffered a previous heart attack several years ago. She is survived by her husband Michael Cardella and her children, Michael, Jr., Melissa and Anthony.

When Chicago native Beverly Wines began her career as an entertainer, a career that would eventually evolve into Pudgy! "The Queen of Tease," female comics were about as rare as female mechanics. Outside of Diller, Tomlin and Rivers, they were very few. She was frequently compared to Phyliss Diller and the late Totie Fields. Phyliss Diller said, "Pudgy was amazingly funny - an original - the perfect person to carry the torch of female comics into the future. There was no one like her. She never used writers. All her material was her own. Unlike most of her "competitors," Pudgy! made her mark without relying on four-letter words or vulgarity. Also unlike other funny ladies, Pudgy! could and sing. In fact, songs were an integral part of her comedy.

Funeral arrangements were not complete at press time.

HERE & THERE
It is sort of a Christmas day tradition, at least in NYC - Chinese Take-Out or Delivery. With the traditional New York busy lifestyle, and high rents requiring that usually all adult members of a household have day jobs, eating out (or ordering in) is customary. In fact, I know several friends who have never used the oven or stove in their apartments - and use the microwave to reheat. And so, with most of the thousands of restaurants closed on Christmas Eve or Day, the Chinese restaurants are the place to call or to visit. The fact that there are (at least right now) more Chinese restaurants than there are Starbuck's, finding a place to order is no problem. Within two blocks of my apartment are four restaurants serving Chinese cuisine!

Thus it came to pass that last night Daniel joined me for some fine "coffee-table" dining. He tends to go for duck, I like the "sweet & sour" chicken. And as I reflect back on the year 2007 rapidly coming to a close, I realized it was sort of a "sweet & sour" year for cabaret. Not only did we lose some very fine friends and talents in 2007 (including two just this past Christmas weekend), but we also lost several of our favorite cabaret clubs.

On the other hand, we have seen new clubs "arise from the ashes," and a long-time favorite venue undergo a major "makeover," but we also have seen some terrifically talented cabaret newcomers arrive on the scene. I look forward to a great 2008!

Please read this paragraph carefully! I get several e-mails a week from performers asking me why I didn't mention their show or event. If they sent me a "complete" press release (see the bottom of this issue to read what I mean by that), in all probability I did use their item in one of the past issues - or the event is a month or more away. You see, I use each item just once (the exceptions to this rule are listed below), then add it to the DATEBOOK/DIARY page on the website and if they sent a detailed press release, add it to the proper geographical section on the website. So, before you write, check the DIARY to see if maybe I already covered the item and you missed it. All events I cover in the newsletters are posted on the DIARY page, and deleted as the date passes.

I spent a good deal of the past week trying to shake of a very sore throat. Not a cold, really. Just a persistent cough. It is just about gone this morning (although the first hour of the morning I sounded like Ron Poole - outside of NY, think Brenda Vaccaro), thanks to a lot of rest, a lot of Vick's, and a lot of aspirin. With the very few cabaret shows playing since Saturday night, I timed my "break" perfectly. I probably will stay home one night more. (Unfortunately, my cable is not working right now - ugh!)

I did get to see several shows last week, including the grand opening night of THE BROADWAY BABY BISTRO on Thursday the 20th, with BJ Crosby and special guest Darius DeHaas. This was one terrific show! Ms. Crosby is a powerhouse entertainer, and she pulled out all the stops to help give this new venue a full fledged "grand" opening. Booking manager Don Schaffer mentioned after the show that this was just part one of a several-show grand opening series, and if what follows is as great as this event, I can't wait for the next one!

The show was held in the downstairs SONGBOOK THEATER, which seats up to 170, but can be sectioned to adjust to the size of the audience. There have already been several changes to the space since I was given a tour of the 4-part venue just a few weeks ago. The trio of owner Al Martin, booking manager Don Schaffer and consultant John Hoglund bring a wealth of long-time experience in producing live entertainment events to the NYC public, and it is amazing how the venue has evolved.

On Friday I was back at the BROADWAY BISTRO, this time for Marcus Simeone's extended CD-release events in the more intimate street-level MUSIC BOX SHOWROOM, which seats 65. This room is perfect for cabaret events since there are great sight lines all around - and a well-tuned sound system that makes you feel every seat is "ringside." Because of the holiday season, the show was forced to "downsize" a little from the same show presented a few weeks back at THE BEECHMAN, with a smaller band, a different drummer and a slightly revised song list. The guest/backup singer took ill at the last minute as well, and Tracy Stark rushed in at the last minute, and with just 5 minutes rehearsal, saved the day. One thing I love about cabaret is spontaneity - and this show had plenty of it. Probably the best guy around to handle the unexpected is Marcus Simeone (who had to handle a lot of the unexpected lately), and he, with Barry Levitt at the piano, turned what could have been a mess into one fantastic and entertaining show. I have to admit, I love this guy's vocals - incredible. If you can't make it to his show this Friday night at 10:30 pm at THE MUSIC BOX, kick yourself and then run out and get his new (debut) CD, "At Last!"

Saturday night I was back at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM for Baby Jane Dexter's "You're Following Me" show - another winning performance. Baby Jane has just one more performance of this show as well - this Saturday at 7:30 pm. I was watching a pair "Baby Jane newbies" seated near me at the show (they revealed their innocence to me before the show) and gat a real kick out of their reactions as Baby Jane "did her magic." By the way, a terrific CD of this show is available as well after the performance.

We fell 10 CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE members short of our "430 by Christmas" goal but I am not too discouraged. 420 is still about 55 (about 15%) more members than we had all of last year's membership year (the membership year ends on July 5th each year). Our biggest year for members was 2004 with 427 members. I have not been to my mailbox since last week Thursday, so there may be a few membership donations that I need to count in. If you have not joined as a supporting member this year, why not do so today? A simple SILVER membership costs just $20 - less than 40 cents a week, or 20 cents an issue.

What are you doing New Year's Eve? There is a special page on the website where we have accumulated about a dozen New Year's Eve Eve and New Year's Eve shows for 2007 - including the latest additions received today. (If your event isn't shown, you probably forgot to send it in.) Just go to the special NEW YEAR'S EVE page on the website at http://www.svhamstra.com/NewYearsEve2007.shtml

What am I doing on New Year's Eve? I will be doing what I have traditionally done: quietly welcoming in the New Year in my 10th floor bedroom/office and possibly (if the cable is working) checking the TV around midnight. There are a lot of great shows to go to - tempting for sure, but I prefer to avoid the wild and the boisterous (and quite frankly I get very impatient with people who cannot "hold their liquor"). I did the "Times Square" thing once, about 20 years ago and everyone should do it once, I suppose, just to say they have done it.

Jazz vocalist Judy Bady must have read about Sammy Goldstein's grand cruise adventures because she sent a note about an adventure she is going on - Saturday, February 16th she leaves for Russia, and will be there for several weeks touring Siberia and Russia with the wonderful Alexander Mashin Trio. The on March 27th she is off to Szczecin, Poland, where she'll be presenting several jazz vocal workshops and performing at the Royal Jazz Club. Then on April 1st she heads for Katowice, Poland, where she will be performing at as well as presenting two days of jazz vocal workshops at the Third Annual Silesia Jazz Festival. Now, frankly, I would prefer to take Sammy's cruise ship tours, but on the other hand, Judy isn't stuck on a boat the whole time.

I know everyone is winding down from the madness of the "gift giving" holidays - and perhaps just a little short of the green, but I do want to urge you to try to attend Cynthia Crane's "If I Hear Another Song About Christmas" benefit show at DON'T TELL MAMA on Thursday night the 27th of December at 8:30 pm. Some of the top talents in town are taking part and all proceeds go to the Al Hirschfeld Free Health Clinic at the Aurora, part of BROADWAY CARES/EQUITY FIGHTS AIDS (http://www.bcefa.org/ ). Details are in the chronological listings below under December 27th. The recent stagehands' strike, which closed the theaters for several weeks, cut back severely on the BC/EFA collections this year, and this is one way you can really make a difference.

I had some more things to say about 2007, but I go back to the "sweet & sour" anecdote at the top of this section, and decided to leave the year on a "sweet" note - and leave the "sour" for next year.

Until Thursday then.

ABOUT CABARET NEWS IN THE NEWSLETTER AND ON THE WEBSITE
How do you get an item posted in the CABARET NEWS section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website and in the newsletter? It is really quite simple.

Just e-mail me a press release of at least four or five paragraphs, giving the complete information on your show, CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available. Please send me complete information - and do not merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference to a website. By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from the press releases I receive before using the item on my website or in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the four or more paragraphs. If you don't have a press release, just click here: http://www.svhamstra.com/PressRelease1.shtml and fill out the information as completely as possible - or use the items asked for as a guide to the information I need.

Just send in your press release or listings request in simple txt format if possible (the format I write these issues in and use for the website), and send any photos as attachments, not imbedded within the e-mail. And, please, please don't send, instead of a press release, one of those e-mails with all those annoying html links (with multi-columns, embedded photos, distracting backgrounds, etc.) Do not send simply a .jpg of your post card. Do not send us one of those "e-vite" things that require us to "click to open" and lead to a web page somewhere. I never open them! The more information the better - it is easier for me to trim the release than to hunt and google websites for more information.

We usually run articles about 2 to 3 weeks before event date if possible so it is wisest to send your release about 4 weeks in advance. Because of the large number of items received, we can only use news of event just once, so we try not to get too far ahead in the news. There are a few exceptions to the "just once" rule:

+++ If the event is advertised on the website it will be repeated in every issue of the newsletter

+++ If the event offers a discount to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE it will be included in each MID-WEEK issue of the newsletter.

+++ Major benefits where ALL proceeds are given to the charity named will be mentioned in every issue as well as major cabaret events like cabaret festivals and galas.

+++ We also include at least once each week those regular (monthly, weekly, etc.) events with guests who change each performance, like SETH'S BROADWAY CHATTERBOX, BOB EGAN'S MONDAY SHOWCASE and the like.

IT'S TIME TO GO
At the top of this newsletter I promised that you would read things in this issue you will not find published anywhere else. Did I keep my promise?

I realize that there is probably far more information here than you might be able to digest in one reading, but please keep in mind that for the performers mentioned, CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE is one of the few publications that spread the word about their shows and performances. To them, that item about their show is most important, and the fact that every issue published is also posted on my website and on the blog means two additional places where the show information can be found by fans and search engines (Google, etc.) alike. Your banner ads and membership donations make this all possible.

One more reminder - all current memberships for CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE expired on Thursday, July 5th 2007. You can renew (or get a new) membership almost instantly on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.svhamstra.com/ ), using a credit card. Just click on the button at the top of every page of the website marked JOIN HERE. Or you can mail your check, made out simply to Stu Hamstra to 676A Ninth Avenue #120, New York, NY 10036. Memberships are available at several levels with varying benefits. Basic membership (which can be upgraded at any time with full credit) is $20 (SILVER). You membership dollars support the website, the newsletter, the blog and other activities of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE. Support CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE as it promotes the art and artists of cabaret.

With this issue I have completely covered all the press and news released received to date concerning events through January - if your item hasn't appeared please resend. Don't forget - no issue on Monday December 31st because of the holidays.

So we big fond farewell to 2007 and look forward to a grand welcome to 2008. I have a couple of ideas and plans I want to try to put into affect in the new year and will talk a little about them in the next issue (remember, only one issue next week, on Wednesday the 2nd).

Thanks for your holiday cards and e-mails. Thanks for your support, advertising and membership donations in 2007. Have a very happy and most prosperous, healthy and rewarding New Year!

And that is just about the way it was.

Hugs & Stuff,

STU
