AUSTRALIA: McBROOM & LUFT HEADLINE AT THE 2008 ADELAIDE CABARET FESTIVAL
*** FEATURED FESTIVAL EVENT ***
Amanda McBroom and Lorna Luft are just two of the headliners who will
be appearing at the 2008 ADELAIDE CABARET FESTIVAL (http://adelaidecabaretfestival.com/
), which runs from Friday, June 6th through Saturday June 14th at
the Adelaide Festival Centre in Adelaide, AUS.
As well as giving three performances at the festival,
Amanda McBroom will also present a masterclass, as will UK cabaret
performer Maria Friedman, who is giving her only Australian performance
at the festival. Among other International artists at this year's
Festival are Belle Du Berry from France, Elena Roger from Argentina
and the Balkan Gypsy group Paprika Balkanicus.
Australian musical theatre leading lady Rhonda Burchmore
will open the Festival fronting the 20-piece Adelaide Art Orchestra
in a lavish Las Vegas style revue, while Tom Burlinson, fresh from
his stint in the Australian production of "The Producers" will reprise
his Frank Sinatra tribute, "A Life in Song".
Demand for tickets has been so strong this year that
several additional performances have been added to the schedule
including an extra performance for Lorna Luft.
Full details of the festival program are available
on the Adelaide Cabaret Festival website at http://www.adelaidecabaretfestival.com/

IMPORTANT NEWS FROM/ABOUT CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
TICKETS ON SALE NOW FOR 18th BIRTHDAY SHOW JULY 9th
2008 MAC/HANSON AWARD WINNER MAUREEN KELLEY STEWART ADDED TO CAST!
*** CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE SPECIAL EVENT ***
2008 MAC/HANSON AWARD winner Maureen Kelley Stewart has just been
added to the star-studded roster of singers who will appear at our
CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE 18th BIRTHDAY SHOW on Wednesday, July 9th at
the LAURIE BEECHMAN!
In addition to Ms. Stewart, already signed on to
perform as of today are 2008-MAC AWARD winner Phil Bond, Edd Clark,
Hector Coris, Cynthia Crane, 2008-MAC AWARD winner John De Marco,
2008-MAC AWARD winner Eric Michael Gillett, David Gurland, Teresa
Fischer, Matt Leahy, Joyce Moody, Krisanthi Pappas and Alysha Umphress
. 2008-MAC AWARD winner Miles Phillips, as the JEFF MATSON AWARD
winner, and 2008-MAC AWARD winner Tracy Stark, as the DOTTIE BURMAN
AWARD winner have also been invited to perform.
The party celebrates the start of the new 2008-2009
membership year which officially begins July 6th - the date in 1990
when the first CABARET HOTLINE (print edition) was published (we
were first on the web with cabaret news - since 1997!). I The theme
of the show is: TURNING 18 - OLD ENOUGH TO CHOOSE! (no politics,
please). The purpose of the show and the membership drive is to
raise the funds necessary to keep the website and the newsletter
from closing down during the June-July-August period when new banner
advertising drops to close to zero.
We already have sold over 45 of the 85 seats available
- more than 50% SOLD! I don't want you to miss out, since with less
than 40 seats to sell, and a great lineup of performers, I predict
a sellout in the next two weeks. Please don't call THE BEECHMAN
- they are not taking reservations for this event. NO TICKETS WILL
BE AVAILABLE THE DAY OF THE SHOW (even if we have seats left to
sell)! NO COMPS (someone already purchased a ticket/membership as
a gift for Julie Wilson).
Tickets are just $10 - but must be purchased along
with a 2008-2009 membership: $30 for a SILVER combo; $$85 for a
GOLD combo; $250 CRYSTAL membership gets you 2 free tickets. If
you can make it to the show and haven't ordered your ticket yet,
this would be a perfect time to join as a member or renew your membership
and get your ticket at the same time! Just go to http://www.svhamstra.com/thankyou1tkt.shtml
to place your order. Once more: SEATING IS LIMITED TO 85 - your
reservation is not assured until payment is made (that's why we
recommend using PayPal).
If you can't attend and wish to send congratulations
(or if you have a show or CD to promote) you can support the event
by purchasing an ad in the program booklet - costs start at just
$20. Just go to http://www.svhamstra.com/thankyou1prog.shtml . Deadline
for ads is June 24th.
I am still looking for one more sponsor to help with
covering the costs of the event (every penny of tickets sold will
go to support CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE - as in the past). If you wish
to be a sponsor at $100 go to http://www.svhamstra.com/thankyou1sponsor.shtml
. Sponsors are mentioned (if they wish) on all publicity information
sent and also get a 1/4 page ad (worth $35)
THE CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE 18th BIRTHDAY PARTY is
sponsored in part by 2008-MAC AWARD winner Suzanne Carricco (http://www.suzannecarrico.com/
), Raissa Katona Bennett (http://www.raissa.info/
), MIRANDA MUSIC (http://www.mirandamusic.com/
), Sandi Durell (http://www.timelessdivas.com/
), Joyce Moody (http://www.joycemoody.com/
) and Eric Michael Gillett (http://www.ericmichaelgillett.com/
) plus 2 additional anonymous sponsors.
2008-2009 MEMBERSHIPS NOW AVAILABLE GOOD THROUGH JULY 5, 2009
2008-2009 CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE memberships, good through July 5,

day of membership can renew now). SILVER memberships still are just
$20 - GOLD memberships remain at $75. Other membership levels available.

In an effort to cut down on "repeated" events, except for announcements
of programs offered by cabaret membership organizations, and shows
where guests change regularly, cabaret news items will usually appear

on the website will be mentioned in every issue, and events offering
discounts to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE are mentioned in every
MIDWEEK issue. As with all live entertainment events, performers are

career. When her jazzy, torchy style didn't fit the dance oriented
sound of the mid to late 70s, she moved to Kansas City, where she
slowly gathered a following singing and playing piano at local nightclubs.
Since the runaway success of her 1990 debut Platinum selling album
"Circle of One," and the impassioned hit single "Get Here" (the Brenda
Russell composition that became an unofficial anthem of the 1991 Gulf
War), Adams has inspired a growing legion of fans in the USA and Europe
with journeys of the heart via songs that draw deeply from her roots
in gospel, while crossing effortlessly into the realms of soul, R&B,
urban, and popular music. Call for showtimes and cover/minimum information.

ABOUT CABARET NEWS IN THE NEWSLETTER AND ON THE WEBSITE
How do you get an item posted in the CABARET NEWS section of the CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE website, in the DATEBOOK/DIARY and in the twice-weekly
newsletter? Just e-mail a press release of at least four or five paragraphs,
giving the complete information on your show, CD release or other
cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available.
Please send complete information - and do not merely e-mail a copy
of your flier or a reference to a website. If you don't have a press
release, just click here: http://www.svhamstra.com/PressRelease1.shtml
and fill out the information as completely as possible - or use the
items asked for as a guide to the information I need. Just send in
your press release or listings request in simple txt format if possible,
and send any photos as attachments, not imbedded within the e-mail.
The more information the better.
Because of the large number of items received, we
can only use news of event just once, so we try not to get too far
ahead in the news. There are a few exceptions to the "just once"
rule: If the event is advertised on the website it will be repeated
in every issue of the newsletter; If the event offers a discount
to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE it will be included in each
MID-WEEK issue of the newsletter; Major benefits where ALL proceeds
are given to the charity named will be mentioned in every issue
as well as major cabaret events like cabaret festivals and galas;
We also include at least once each week those regular (monthly,
weekly, etc.) events with guests who change each performance, like
SETH'S BROADWAY CHATTERBOX, BOB EGAN'S MONDAY SHOWCASE and the like.
HERE & THERE
I had moments of thrill and excitement this week as well as moments
of disappointments - life is a lot like a roller coaster for me. And
somehow the thrill of the high points far outweigh the failed expectations
of the low points. In fact, the lows make the highs even more thrilling.
One of the most disappointing things about covering cabaret is going
to a show which has received fantastic reviews and is lauded on all
the message boards and group e-mails and discovering that the actual
show is not at all as promoted. Aren't you getting just a little tired
of reviews that read more like they were written by a publicist for
the show than by an actual critical reviewer? I have said this before:
the greatest damage a critic can do to the art of cabaret is to write
a good review about a bad show! They may feel that they are helping
a performer get a good house by hyping - never realizing that folks
new to cabaret will get turned off to the art of cabaret by some of
the far-below-par performers out there.
It has gotten to the point that I no longer choose
the events I attend on the basis of reviews. I make my choices on
the basis of past performances by the artist, and in the case of
newcomers, the quality of the musical director and/or the director.
And even then, this doesn't always work. One time, after a particularly
dreadful show, I asked the famed and highly skilled musical director
why he would be on stage with someone so obviously unskilled, and
he replied "I need the money and if I didn't do it, someone else
would."
And as for directors, even here it seems that a few
of them I truly admire have adopted the same attitude. In one case
I went back to see a performer I truly was disappointed in at a
previous outing mainly because a skilled and noted director had
gotten involved - and there was no improvement whatsoever. "Take
the money and run" seems to be the rule these day. On the other
hand, why should cabaret be any different than the rest of the world
seems to act?
As for thrills, one of the biggest thrills I had this week (and since
I was out of circulation for the better part of 3 weeks - this month)
was provided by Raisa Katonah Bennett at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM on
Tuesday night. Lest you think this is just another "puff piece" I
assure you when I get excited about a show and/or performer, you can
count on what I write as my genuine feelings.
I was drawn to this show in part by the title - "Putting
Things Away." This is the title of a song with music & lyrics by
Amanda McBroom, that I heard for the first time about 8 years ago,
sung by Lisa Richard at THE CINEGRILL in Hollywood. The song seemed
to be written about the things happening in my life at that moment
in time, and I was awed by its very simplicity and depth. As sung
on Tuesday by Ms. Bennett, it was a deja vu moment - a truly moving
experience.
Raisa has fantastic vocals - that's a given. But
more than that, she has constructed a show, along with her director
Eric Michael Gillett, about reorganizing your life that includes
some of the most focused songs written by contemporary songwriters
you can find. She gives each song her special personal touch - with
hardly a word of patter. She lets her song list do the talking.
And as a sort of reminder to all of us to reorganize, her closing
song was the David Friedman classic, "We Live on Borrowed Time."
Two more shows remain in the run: Sunday and Tuesday,
May 25th & 27th, both at 7:00 pm at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM. They
don't get much better than this!
Just a reminder for folks in the USA - Monday is Memorial Day and
some cabaret and piano bar schedules may be amended or changed over
the 4-day weekend. Traffic patterns also change - give yourself extra
time to get to your destination and phone ahead. And with folks on
holiday at a time when fuel prices have hit an all time high, many
looking for live entertainment events may start looking for events
closer to home. Now more than ever, make reservations for cabaret
events you plan to see - and arrive on time. You reservation may be
worthless once the show starts and your seats are given to folks who
didn't make reservations.
More thoughts on the 2008 MAC AWARDS that were in my notes but never
made it into the newsletters.
First off, what a fantastic choice by MAC in holding
the show at B.B. KINGS - the location at the center of the excitingly
refurbished 42nd Street gave the event a glamor and pizzaz that
would be hard to duplicate in this hectic busy town. And the fact
that the limited seating of about 600 enable MAC to sell out gives
a special aura of celebration to the event. I realize that the stage
is not large and getting on stage from back stage is limited to
one doorway, with little room to negotiate. But MAC is blessed with
directors like Lennie Watts who can plan and organize a fantastic,
smoothly run event, even with limitations.
Second, cabaret is like a family (or even sort of
like church) and the MAC AWARDS show gives excitement and thrill
far beyond what is happening on stage. Old friends are reunited,
cabaret folks from far beyond the NYC metropolitan area manage to
get into town for this event. For example, Airman Kit Lo (I don't
exactly know his rank) was there from North Dakota (on his way from
being transferred from the coldest part of the county to the hottest
- he will be stationed in Texas now). And the expansiveness of the
venue give everyone a chance to schmooze by the bar, even during
the show, without disturbing too many folks at the tables. Let's
do this again next year!
Another reminder: it is FLEET WEEK in the NYC, with naval ships from
all over the world converging on NY harbor to show their stuff (and
give their crews shore leave). The event runs through Wednesday the
28th. Thousands of Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen from U.S.
Navy and U.S. Coast Guard ships will be in town for Fleet Week New
York. Hosted nearly every year since 1984, Fleet Week New York is
the City's celebration of the sea services. This annual event also
provides an opportunity for the citizens of New York City and the
surrounding Tri-State area to meet Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen,
as well as witness first hand the latest capabilities of today's Navy,
Marine Corps and Coast Guard Team. Fleet Week includes dozens of military
demonstrations and displays throughout the week, as well as public
visitation of many of the participating ships. For a schedule of events,
see http://www.cnrma.navy.mil/fleetweek/schedule.htm
If you have visited the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website lately (over
6000 folks do every day) you may note that we are in the midst of
a major renovation - and about 50% towards completion. (I had to pause
reconstruction for a few days to work on another website.) The opening
(home) page changes every morning to list the latest and best shows
around the world happening that day. And we are slowly converting
to a "magazine" format - I'll explain that later.
Having a show or cabaret event? Is your show listed
on the website and/or the newsletter? There is no charge for your
show to be listed - you don't even have to be a member! Remember,
unseen and untold means unsold. Check out the website in the weeks
to come as we make improvements.
Just in case you missed the item at the top of the newsletter, over
45 tickets have been sold (as of last night - a few orders came in
today as I was writing this issue) for our 18th BIRTHDAY PARTY at
THE LAURIE BEECHMAN to be held on Wednesday, July 9th starting a 7:00
pm. This means less than 40 seats remain. NO TICKETS WILL BE SOLD
ON THE DAY OF THE SHOW - you must have a paid ticket to attend the
show (no comps). All tickets sold this year include a 2008-2009 membership
- SILVER MEMBER/TICKET combo is $30 and GOLD MEMBER/TICKET combo is
$85 - which means that the actual cost of the ticket is $10. This
has led to some confusion - let me explain: last year we sold combo
SILVER tickets for $40 and regular tickets for $35. This year combo
SILVER tickets are just $30 - $10 less than last year, and $5 less
than last years non-membership ticket - so we are not selling any
regular non-membership tickets this year. GOLD combo tickets cost
$85 (last year they cost $95). This reduced ticket price is made possible
because of the generous arrangements offered by Phil Bond and Kenny
Bell at THE BEECHMAN. Please remember, there is a $15 food/drink minimum
at THE BEECHMAN. For more information, see this link: http://www.svhamstra.com/NewsCABHT080709Bday18a.shtml
THE CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE 18th BIRTHDAY PARTY is
sponsored in part by 2008-MAC AWARD winner Suzanne Carricco (http://www.suzannecarrico.com/
), Raissa Katona Bennett (http://www.raissa.info/
), MIRANDA MUSIC (http://www.mirandamusic.com/
), Sandi Durell (http://www.timelessdivas.com/
), Joyce Moody (http://www.joycemoody.com/
) and Eric Michael Gillett (http://www.ericmichaelgillett.com/
) plus 2 additional anonymous sponsors.
If you can't attend our 18th BIRTHDAY SHOW on July 9th, (or if you
have a show or CD to promote, or want to send congratulations on the
birthday or to our award winners) you can support the event by purchasing
an ad in the program booklet (costs start at just $20). Just go to
http://www.svhamstra.com/thankyou1prog.shtml
and fill in the size ad you wish to purchase and I will send you a
PayPal invoice (we prefer PayPal - the safest way to transmit money
via the internet). Deadline for ads is June 24th.
Well, its time to go - I share a DSL line with my roommate and our
router went kafluey yesterday and I have to run over to Best Buy for
a new one - he has to be off-line while I'm on line and that's really
miserable for both of us.
And that is just about the way it was.
Until Monday, then.
