ONLY 31 TICKETS LEFT FOR 18th BIRTHDAY SHOW JULY 9th
*** CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE SPECIAL EVENT ***
Already signed on to perform as of today are 2008-MAC AWARD winner
Phil Bond, Edd Clark, Hector Coris, Cynthia Crane, 2008-MAC AWARD
winner John De Marco, 2008-MAC AWARD winner Eric Michael Gillett,

Umphress. 2008-MAC AWARD winner Miles Phillips, as the JEFF MATSON
AWARD winner, and 2008-MAC AWARD winner Tracy Stark, as the DOTTIE
BURMAN AWARD winner have also been invited to perform.
The party celebrates the start of the new 2008-2009
membership year which officially begins July 6th - the date in 1990
when the first CABARET HOTLINE (print edition) was published (we
were first on the web with cabaret news - since 1997!). I The theme
of the show is: TURNING 18 - OLD ENOUGH TO CHOOSE! (no politics,
please). The purpose of the show and the membership drive is to
raise the funds necessary to keep the website and the newsletter
from closing down during the June-July-August period when new banner
advertising drops to close to zero.
We already have sold 54 of the 85 seats available.
I don't want you to miss out, since with just 31 seats to sell,
and such a great lineup of performers, I predict a sellout in the
week or so. Please don't call THE BEECHMAN - they are not taking
reservations for this event. NO TICKETS WILL BE AVAILABLE THE
DAY OF THE SHOW (even if we have seats left to sell)! NO COMPS.
Tickets are just $10 - but must be purchased along
with a 2008-2009 membership: $30 for a SILVER combo; $$85 for a
GOLD combo; $250 CRYSTAL membership gets you 2 free tickets. If
you can make it to the show and haven't ordered your ticket yet,
this would be a perfect time to join as a member or renew your membership
and get your ticket at the same time! Just go to http://www.svhamstra.com/thankyou1tkt.shtml
to place your order. Once more: SEATING IS LIMITED TO 85 - your
reservation is not assured until payment is made (that's why we
recommend using PayPal).
If you can't attend and wish to send congratulations
(or if you have a show or CD to promote) you can support the event
by purchasing an ad in the program booklet - costs start at just
$20. Just go to http://www.svhamstra.com/thankyou1prog.shtml
. Deadline for ads is June 24th.
THE CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE 18th BIRTHDAY PARTY is
sponsored in part by 2008-MAC AWARD winner Suzanne Carricco (http://www.suzannecarrico.com/

on the website will be mentioned in every issue, and events offering
discounts to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE are mentioned in every

a living with her music ... but in a most unusual way. While studying
music at San Francisco State with her eye on an eventual singing career,
she took a job playing woodwinds with the road company of "A Chorus
Line." She spent the next ten years traveling the world as a musician,
working with the cast of shows like "Les Miserables," and "Mambo Kings,"
but also observing some of the great singers of the times. Now she
returns to performing as a vocalist. There is a $10 cover - call for
minimum information.
NEW JERSEY: MARCUS SIMEONE SINGS "DARRIN, MATHIS & BENNETT"
Since his sensational cabaret debut in January 2000, Marcus Simeone
has emerged as one of the most celebrated singers to grace the stages
of Manhattan's nightclubs since Streisand took the town by storm.
Now he returns to LE DOME at THE MANOR (111 Prospect Avenue, West
Orange, NJ - 973-731-2360 - http://themanorrestaurant.com/cabaret.html
) on Thursday, June 12th with "Darrin, Mathis & Bennett" a tribute
to three of the most popular male vocalists of the past 50 years.
Winner of the 2003 Back Stage Bistro Award as Outstanding Vocalist,
the 2000 Cabaret Hotline Award, and back-to-back MAC (Manhattan Association
of Cabarets) Awards in 2004 and 2005, Marcus is universally regarded
for his heart-wrenching interpretations of lyrics, red-hot jazz sensibility,
and powerful pop flair. The Cabaret Soiree consists of a 4-course,
4-star dinner-and-show package, with dinner seatings at 6:00, 6:15,
and 6:30 pm. Cost for dinner and show is $74 plus tax and gratuity.

NEW YORK CITY: BOOTH & PAT ARE SLOW CHILDREN PLAYING IN JUNE
After successful shows in November, December, January, and February,
comic singers Booth Daniels and Patrick Frankfort return to THE DUPLEX
CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/
) with their latest show "Slow Children Playing" on Thursday, June
12th and Friday, June 27th, both shows at 7:00 pm. Booth & Patrick
took their decade of warped tomfoolery and bizarre insomnia-induced
conversations and put 'em into a duo act - part sketch comedy, part
song with just a touch of the off-kilter. Daniels, a comic musical
theatre actor, was previously seen by the cabaret world in his critically
acclaimed cabaret "Unconventional" that played at Don't Tell Mama
in 2006 & 2007. Frankfort hit New York after graduating the Boston
Conservatory in 1999. He's been in such outstanding productions as
POKEMON LIVE! at Radio City Music Hall, and the production of LAUGHING
MATTERS TOO with the Florida Studio Theatre. He can also be seen traveling
and performing in New York with the hilarious sketch group, CITY HALL.
There is a $10 cover and a 2-drink minimum.

ABOUT CABARET NEWS IN THE NEWSLETTER AND ON THE WEBSITE
How do you get an item posted in the CABARET NEWS section of the CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE website, in the DATEBOOK/DIARY and in the twice-weekly
newsletter? Just e-mail a press release of at least four or five paragraphs,
giving the complete information on your show, CD release or other
cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available.
Please send complete information - and do not merely e-mail a copy
of your flier or a reference to a website. If you don't have a press
release, just click here: http://www.svhamstra.com/PressRelease1.shtml
and fill out the information as completely as possible - or use the
items asked for as a guide to the information I need. Just send in
your press release or listings request in simple txt format if possible,
and send any photos as attachments, not imbedded within the e-mail.
The more information the better.
Because of the large number of items received, we
can only use news of event just once, so we try not to get too far
ahead in the news. There are a few exceptions to the "just once"
rule: If the event is advertised on the website it will be repeated
in every issue of the newsletter; If the event offers a discount
to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE it will be included in each
MID-WEEK issue of the newsletter; Major benefits where ALL proceeds
are given to the charity named will be mentioned in every issue
as well as major cabaret events like cabaret festivals and galas;
We also include at least once each week those regular (monthly,
weekly, etc.) events with guests who change each performance, like
SETH'S BROADWAY CHATTERBOX, BOB EGAN'S MONDAY SHOWCASE and the like.
HERE & THERE
Just a reminder for folks in the USA - Today is Memorial Day and some
cabaret and piano bar schedules may be amended or changed. Traffic
patterns also change - give yourself extra time to get to your destination
and phone ahead. And with folks on holiday at a time when fuel prices
have hit an all time high, many looking for live entertainment events
may start looking for events closer to home. Now more than ever, make
reservations for cabaret events you plan to see - and arrive on time.
You reservation may be worthless once the show starts and your seats
are given to folks who didn't make reservations.
GOING - GOING - ALMOST GONE! 54 tickets have been sold (as of 9:00
am today) for our 18th BIRTHDAY PARTY at THE LAURIE BEECHMAN to be
held on Wednesday, July 9th starting a 7:00 pm. This means only 31
seats remain. NO TICKETS WILL BE SOLD ON THE DAY OF THE SHOW
- you must have a paid ticket to attend the show (no comps). All tickets
sold this year include a 2008-2009 membership - SILVER MEMBER/TICKET
combo is $30 and GOLD MEMBER/TICKET combo is $85 - which means that
the actual cost of the ticket is $10. Please remember, there is a
$15 food/drink minimum at THE BEECHMAN. For more information, see
this link: http://www.svhamstra.com/NewsCABHT080709Bday18a.shtml
Just in case you are confused, last year we sold
combo SILVER tickets for $40 and regular tickets for $35. This year
combo SILVER tickets are just $30 - $10 less than last year, and
$5 less than last years non-membership ticket. We are not selling
any regular non-membership tickets this year. GOLD combo tickets
cost $85 (last year they cost $95). This reduced ticket price is
made possible because of the generous arrangements offered by Phil
Bond and Kenny Bell at THE BEECHMAN.
THE CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE 18th BIRTHDAY PARTY is
sponsored in part by 2008-MAC AWARD winner Suzanne Carricco (http://www.suzannecarrico.com/

) plus 2 additional anonymous sponsors.
When you've been covering cabaret for nearly 18 years, and going to
cabaret shows for an additional 10 or 15 more, you begin to build
up a lot of memories of performers of the past - and the present.
It is always a thrill to receive a press release or read a news item
somewhere about a performer that "you knew when." I am particularly
excited when I see a performance by someone I saw make their NYC cabaret
debut - folks like Marcus Simeone, Jeanne MacDonald, Scott Coulter,
Lisa Asher, Frank Dain, Klea Blackhurst, Sue Matsuki, Karen Saunders,
David Gurland, Joan Crowe, Annie Hughes, Tom Andersen, Jason Robert
Brown, Ricky Ritzel (yes, I am that old), and so many more. They were
new on the scene back then and now, at least in the NYC cabaret arena,
are established and well known (and highly lauded) performers.
Lucille Carr-Kaffashan is in that group as well -
performers who I have seen grow, flourish and achieve great things
in this art form. So I was particularly pleased to catch her show
"Finding Home" at DON'T TELL MAMA last week. Lucille made her debut
at MAMA'S in 1999 and it was very fitting and appropriate for her
to return to MAMA'S with this presentation of songs about returning
to one's roots, revisiting the past, and discovering that after
all is said and done, it is home (wherever that may be) where one
finds comfort and love. The new cabaret room at MAMA'S was the perfect
setting for this cozy, heartwarming show - and David Brunetti's
arrangements of Lucille's song choices - many on them sung in medley
- gave the show a true feeling of security and "homeyness". Lucille's
confident and true vocals and her tender interpretations made for
one of those cabaret shows that you leave believing that it was
created just for you - and the other folks in the audience just
happened to be there. Especially touching were Lucille's tender
renditions of "Sweet Dreams" by John Bocchino, and Annie Dinerman's
"Child in Me Again." Lucille has one more show in this series, on
Thursday, May 29th at 8:30 pm. Highly recommended.
John Hoglund reports that he is recovering quickly at home from his
recent hospital stay. He was developing a benefit show to be presented
in June or July, but has decided to reschedule "Listen to Her Heart:
The Songs of Nancy LaMott" on behalf of BROADWAY CARES/EQUITY FIGHTS
AIDS (http://www.bcefa.org/ )
to later in the year - new date & and details to be announced. The
event will celebrate Nancy's unprecedented breakthrough to #12 on
the Jazz Billboard charts with her beautiful rendition of "Ask Me
Again" from the newly released CD/DVD set (LML Music) - twelve years
after her passing, produced by David Friedman. John wrote that the
event will include past MAC winners and Broadway artists associated
with Nancy who frequently lent her voice for many Broadway Cares events.
Having a show or cabaret event? Is your show listed on the CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE website and/or the newsletter? There is no charge for
your show to be listed - you don't even have to be a member! Remember,
unseen and untold means unsold. You don't even need a press agent
to prepare your press release - just go to http://www.svhamstra.com/PressRelease1.shtml
and fill out the information as completely as possible
There was a street fair on Avenue C yesterday - celebrating the annual
LOWER EAST SIDE PUERTO RICAN FESTIVAL, just around the corner from
my apartment, and running up Avenue C from 6th Street to 13th Street.
There were food carts (as Michael Brill would say) "serving food kept
at unsafe temperatures," and hundreds of vendors selling everything
from t-shirts to religious medals. There even was a section for the
kids with what appeared to be large balloons filled with plastic balls
that kids could climb inside and prance around in. And there was music.
Several live bands. Lots of music. Lots of very loud music. Lots of
very loud samba, mambo, reggaeton, urban, salsa, tangos, merengue,
mexicana, and more. Not a Cole Porter or Johnny Mercer tune to be
heard. And the people up and down the avenue were rejoicing, dancing
and swaying to the tunes. It was noise - but truly a joyful noise.
If you can't attend our 18th BIRTHDAY SHOW on July 9th, (or if you
have a show or CD to promote, or want to send congratulations on the
birthday or to our award winners) you can support the event by purchasing
an ad in the program booklet (costs start at just $20). Just go to
http://www.svhamstra.com/thankyou1prog.shtml
and fill in the size ad you wish to purchase and I will send you a
PayPal invoice (we prefer PayPal - the safest way to transmit money
via the internet). Deadline for ads is June 24th.
Once again I tried to cover all the new cabaret related news items
in the listing section above - items from previous newsletters can
be found in the DIARY/DATEBOOK section on the website at http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/CabaretEventListing.shtml
. I your news item has not yet appeared it could be because we haven't
reached your performance week yet - we try to write of events taking
place in the next 3 weeks or so, since items only appear once in the
newsletter (unless it is a regular event featuring different performers
each week, a banner advertiser, a benefit, or offers a CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE discount).
Oh yes, we have one or two releases that came in
today or yesterday that we haven't gotten to look over yet - plus
a few that do not contain vital information we need - like venue
address & phone number, showtime, etc.
Time to finish and get to my nap - I am off to catch Suzanne Carrico's
new show tonight at 7:00 pm at the METROPOLITAN ROOM. Suzanne won
the 2008 MAC AWARD - FEMALE DEBUT for her exciting first show last
year - I am truly looking forward to what she has planned for tonight.
And that is just about the way it was.
Until Thursday, then.
