TODAY'S TOP STORY
NEW YORK CITY: METROSTAR TALENT CONTEST IN JULY-AUGUST
THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440 - http://www.metropolitanroom.com/
) presents the first annual "Metrostar Talent Challenge" beginning
on Monday, July 7th. Up to 60 solo singers and vocal duos will compete
in this jury and audience-voted elimination-round competition that
spans seven consecutive Mondays. The grand prize winner and two runner-ups
(who will be named the night of the contest's finale on August 18th
will enjoy an impressive package of prizes and professional encouragements.
For the winner these will include a fully produced, prime time booking
at the Metropolitan Room and a professionally produced live recording
of this upcoming show.
Open to performers who have not played a major engagement
at The Metropolitan Room, "Metrostar" will invite singers across
a spectrum of styles to compete head to head. Reflecting the club's
preference to present both seasoned and up-and-coming performers,
the contest will showcase the talents of solo singers and vocal
duos across every age bracket, from the Broadway stage, cabaret,
and the jazz-pop-folk recording and concert worlds.
Online and by-mail registration begins today, June
9th. Performers are asked to consult the club's website for eligibility
details and instructions on how to apply online or by mail. The
application deadline is July 1st. Applications will be pre-screened
and approximately 60 performers will be chosen to compete.
The Metropolitan Room's very own Lennie Watts will
serve as the contest's on-stage host. Watts, the multi-award winning
vocalist as well the club's highly regarded booking manager, will
use his well-honed stage and interpersonal gifts to provide a nurturing,
humorous and always entertaining performance environment. Two well-known
figures in the cabaret world will serve as judges throughout the
seven-week competition. They will be joined each week by a different,
celebrity guest judge. Throughout the Challenge the judges' voting
will be supplemented by audience ballot voting.
Over seven weeks "Metrostar" will encourage contestants
to establish well-rounded and uniquely entertaining stage presences.
An artistically ambitious competition, "Metrostar" values innovation
and creativity over raw talent, intelligence over polish, and authenticity
over vocal fireworks.
The contest's three career boosting prize packages
are worth over $15,000. For the grand prize the Metropolitan Room
is committing to producing and presenting a new show starring the
winner, in a week-long, prime-time engagement, plus a multi-track
"Live at The Metropolitan Room" recording of the new show. The runner-ups
will open for the winner and receive demo recordings of their appearance.
The club will engage several well-known professionals and artists
to collaborate with the winners.
The trials are on July 7th, 14th & 21st; the quarter
finals bow on July 28th; the semi finals take place on August 4th.
The first round of finals unfolds on August 11th, and the contest's
finale is on August 18th. All shows are at 7:00 pm. The cover charge
for all shows is $15, with a $15 minimum.

HERE & THERE
It's too darn hot! I have no idea how long this issue is going to
be today because right now my air conditioner is having a tough struggle
to maintain just an 80-degree level here in the opulent, penthouse
offices of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE. I keep the a/c turned off over
night - for some reason I can sleep better with it off - and so the
heat had a head start on the machine this morning. At 7:00 am the
temperature outside and inside was a nasty 86-degrees, and right now
(11:00 am) it is a sweltering 90-degrees outside, and predicted to
reach 100 or so.
But the heat alone is not what makes it so uncomfortable
(and it isn't the humidity either - 60%). It is all about a cloud
of pollution that seems to be hanging over my part of town. My eyes
were watering and itching all morning, making work on the newsletter
a bit difficult.
But enough complaining - folks in parts of Brooklyn
had a power failure during the night and many still don't have power.
They must be really uncomfortable!
I moved the HERE & THERE section up a few notches for this issue.
You see, I received over 70 new subscribers over the weekend, and
they might not get to this section if it was all the way at the bottom
as it has been for the past several months. I just check the stats,
and we are fast approaching 2,600 subscribers!
Having a show or cabaret event? Is your show listed on the CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE website and/or the newsletter? There is no charge for
your show to be listed - you don't even have to be a member! Remember,
unseen and untold means unsold. You don't even need a press agent
to prepare your press release - just go to http://www.svhamstra.com/PressRelease1.shtml
and fill out the information as completely as possible
Here's an excerpt from an item from the Las Vegas Online Entertainment
Guide - you can read the whole item at http://www.lvol.com/gossip/
.
"For you cabaret lovers who live in or visit Las
Vegas, here is some exciting news. Manhattan's Don't Tell Mama,
located at 343 W. 46th Street, will open a branch of their popular
club in downtown Vegas! Opened about 25 years ago by Erv Raible
(who, at one time, also owned The Duplex, Eighty-Eight's and The
Firebird Cafe), the New York club was purchased by the Pham family
(or should it be Pahmily?) around 1989. The Phams sold the 46th
Street club a year ago, and Ming Pham moved to Las Vegas to open
the first REAL East Coast-style cabaret club here. Expected to launch
in October, Mama's should stimulate the public's interest in this
kind of entertainment."
Meantime, DON'T TELL MAMA here in NYC is having a special celebration
coinciding with the TONY AWARD events on Sunday the 15th of June.
The brand new LOUNGE AT DON'T TELL MAMA, which has been actually open
for a few weeks, will have its official grand opening on the 15th,
starting around 7:00 pm. There will be drink specials, a TONY "Pool"
and TONY Trivia Prizes through out the night. You can watch the TONYS
(just in case you are interested) on the room's 2 Brand New 48" Flat
Screen TVs. No Reservations needed. No Cover Charge.
Watch for more news about our 18th Birthday Party on Wednesday, July
9th at THE LAURIE BEECHMAN THEATER in the next few issues. Although
all the ticket have been sold, 11 tickets are still not paid for and
if not paid by June 16th, will go back on sale. A "waiting list" is
set up, and as tickets are returned and/or cancelled, folks on the
list will be contacted in the order received. Just go to http://www.svhamstra.com/thankyou1tkt.shtml
to place your name on the waiting list. Don't send a check or payment.
You will be sent a PayPal invoice if tickets are available.
THE CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE 18th BIRTHDAY PARTY is
sponsored in part by 2008-MAC AWARD winner Suzanne Carricco (http://www.suzannecarrico.com/
), Raissa Katona Bennett (http://www.raissa.info/

) and Chelsea Hudgens (http://www.chelseasdesktop.com/
) plus 2 additional anonymous sponsors.
If you can't attend our 18th BIRTHDAY SHOW on July 9th, (or if you
have a show or CD to promote, or want to send congratulations on the
birthday or to our award winners) you can support the event by purchasing
an ad in the program booklet (costs start at just $20). Just go to
http://www.svhamstra.com/thankyou1prog.shtml
and fill in the size ad you wish to purchase and I will send you a
PayPal invoice (we prefer PayPal - the safest way to transmit money
via the internet). Deadline for ads is June 24th.
More HERE & THERE items appear at the bottom of this issue - last
minute items that come in just before we "go to press" as well as
a report on shows seen since the last issue.
NOW FOR SOME NEWS ABOUT CABARET
In an effort to cut down on "repeated" events, except for announcements
of programs offered by cabaret membership organizations, and shows
where guests change regularly, cabaret news items will usually appear
just once in the newsletter in abbreviated form. Events advertised
on the website will be mentioned in every issue, and events offering
discounts to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE are mentioned in every
MIDWEEK issue. As with all live entertainment events, performers are
subject to change without notice.

MORE "HERE & THERE"
I
did get to catch two cabaret events since the last issue - before
the heavy rains and heat wave arrived.
The first was a show I had seen twice before, Alice
Frazier's Broadway Without Boundaries" show on Thursday night at
THE LAURIE BEECHMAN at 7:00 pm. Joined by renowned musical director,
Don Rebic, Ms. Frazier is on my list of favorite performers not
just because of her terrific vocals, but also the charm, wit, joy
and enthusiasm she includes in all her performances. Her easy-going
calm and comforting attitude makes a elegant platform for her amazing
vocal abilities - giving us a variety of songs from classic opera
to disco to Broadway standards and more. Her "Mama Mia Medley" has
become a Frazier classic (my friend Daniel scanned the song list
immediately on arrival to make sure it was included) and her reading
of "Tell Me On a Sunday" was the most touching I've heard since
Ginni McMath at EIGHTY EIGHT'S oh so many years ago. This show repeats
on Friday, June 13th at 7:00 pm at THE LAURIE BEECHMAN. It's a real
treat and a perfect show for TONY weekend.
Best line of the show belonged
to musical director Don Rebec: "The way to make a million dollars
in cabaret is to start with two million dollars."
Several of my favorite performers have been recommending that I catch
METROJAM, a cabaret/jazz open mic event held the first Friday of the
month at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM, so I decided to give it a try on Friday
the 6th. While lacking the smooth slickness of Jim Caruso or the boyish
playfulness of Brandon Cutrell (who host CAST PARTY - Mondays at Birdland
and AFTER PARTY - Fridays at THE LAURIE BEECHMAN respectively) host
Joe Bachana brings his own take to the open-mic party genre (begun
in this town many years ago by our own Trudi Mann). Slightly resembling
a young Tony Bennett in looks and vocals, Joe opens the show with
a song and then stands at the sidelines and introduces the singers
in the room who have placed their names on his list. As with all these
events, the quality of performance varies, with this show apparently
"weeding out" the less talented performers, rather than giving them
time on stage for the audience to smirk and snicker at. Several performers
who have appeared or are appearing at the METROPOLITAN ROOM took turns
at the mic, and this is a great way to sample a performer before taking
a chance on an entire show. In fact, one performer's presentation
persuaded me to add the show to my calendar and another performance
actually influenced me to change my plans and skip a show I was planning
to see! The show ends promptly at midnight, so you don't go home thinking
you might miss someone's performance (the other two shows cited go
on often to the wee hours). METROJAM is taking a "summer break" so
check the METROPOLITAN ROOM'S schedule for the next date.
All 85 folks who bought tickets to our "SOLD OUT" 18th Birthday Party
also joined as 2008-2009 members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE - and several
others who couldn't come to the show have joined in the past few weeks
as well (2008-2009 memberships went on sale on May 5th). That means
nearly 100 folks have already joined for the new year! If you are
among those who already joined, thanks for your support!
All 2007-2008 memberships expire on July 5th, 2008
- less than 30 days from now. I don't want current members or new
members to miss one day of membership benefits. Just click on the
button marked JOIN HERE at the top of any page of the website to
see all the levels and benefits of memberships that are available
(or click on this link: http://www.svhamstra.com/Membership.shtml
). Then just click on the PayPal button of your choice (SILVER,
GOLD, SPECIAL) for "one-click" signup.
Once again I tried to cover all the new cabaret related news items
in the listing section above - items from previous newsletters can
be found in the DIARY/DATEBOOK section on the website at http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/CabaretEventListing.shtml
. If your news item has not yet appeared it could be because we haven't
reached your "performance week yet" - we try to write of events taking
place in the next 3 weeks or so. Items only appear once in the newsletter
(unless it is a regular event featuring different performers each
week, a banner advertiser, a benefit, or offers a CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE discount).
If the heat wave breaks a little (and it is a bit more safe for an
old-timer like me to go outdoors), I should get to DON'T TELL MAMA
tonight for newcomer Kevin Dozier's show at 7:00 pm (I missed it last
week because I tried to make a reservation the day of the opening
night). Then (weather and air quality permitting) I hope to walk to
THE BEECHMAN for Angela Scollo's new show at 9:30 pm. And - get this
- Daniel's pal is doing another show here in the East Village around
midnight. This means a extra long nap this afternoon. I am happy to
report that while the temperature outside has risen to 94 degrees
(it is noon), the temperature inside has plummeted to 78 degrees.
And that is just about the way it was.
Until Monday, then.
