HERE & THERE
The new computer is up and running with just a few glitches so far.
This version of the MAC (iMac) has an "INTEL" chip whereas my MacMini
has a Power PC chip. So far I have found two of my applications either
don't work or crash repeatedly on the new machine. But very much on
the plus side, this machine has a "built in" 20-inch LCD monitor (actually,
the computer is sort of built into the monitor). The Mini used a 17
inch CRT monitor that was actually about 5 years old. The increased
size of screen, yet smaller "footprint" has made my work so much easier
it is unbelievable.
I purchased the machine on Friday afternoon at the APPLE STORE
on 14th Street at Ninth Avenue, and Daniel helped me bring it home
on the bus. It came in just one box so there was very little assembly
involved, mostly plugging in wires and cables. It took less than
an hour to move all my files and programs to the new machine. As
soon as it was unpacked and set up on my desk, Daniel wisely left,
since he knew that I would be running the new computer through its
paces for several hours and not in the mood for much conversation.
He was right - like a kid with a new toy, I was still at it at 2:00
am!
As soon as this issue is sent out into cyberspace, and after a
quick nap, the MacMini is going to the same APPLE STORE for repair
(it is under a service contract) to get a replacement hard drive.
Then I will synchronize the two computers and always have a spare
on hand. And until I get some new, updated software, I will probably
use that computer for the two applications that don't work in the
new one.
Congratulations to Danny Sherman! His town, Piedmont NY, just named
Saturday, June 21st as DAN SHERMAN DAY! It is one of three days that
the village Board of Trustees set aside this year to acknowledge the
service and commitment of its residents and volunteers. The board
picked June 21st as Dan Sherman Day because it falls on the summer
solstice, a day associated with seasonal changes and nature. The proclamation
noted that Dan Sherman has worked to preserve open space, has helped
to establish the Piermont Community Garden, and is chairman of the
village's Parks Commission. So, just who is Danny Sherman, and what
does he have to do with cabaret? He just happens to be the long-time
partner of Richard Skipper! Congrats, Danny!
Having a show or cabaret event? Is your show listed on the CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE website and/or the newsletter? There is no charge for
your show to be listed - you don't even have to be a member! Remember,
unseen and untold means unsold. You don't even need a press agent
to prepare your press release - just go to http://www.svhamstra.com/PressRelease1.shtml
and fill out the information as completely as possible.
In my spare time (?) I have been practicing walking. With the left
knee now at about 99% healed, I am getting ready for some special
Saturdays coming up soon here in Manhattan. Plans are to create traffic-free
avenue to stretch along a 6.9-miles of Manhattan streets on three
consecutive Saturdays during the month of August (9th, 16th & 23rd).
The experimental initiative, which the Mayor has dubbed "Summer Streets,"
stretches down Park Avenue from 72nd Street, taking a jog over to
Fourth Avenue at 14th Street, then crossing over to Lafayette Street
and stopping just shy of the Brooklyn Bridge. The length will be for
pedestrians and bicycles only. Several years ago, during a transit
strike, I and a friend walked from West 77th Street to Chinatown,
which is just about the same distance. To rehearse, I walked from
the METROPOLITAN ROOM (23rd at 6th) to my apartment at 10th Street
and Avenue C the other night. It was a fine, fairly cool evening (not
a sunny, hot & humid August day), but I had no problems. I slept pretty
good that night, too!
This morning we signed up our 130th 2008-2009 Member of CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE (Peggy Herman!). All current 2007-2008 memberships expire on
July 5th. We had a little head start because this year all 85 tickets
sold to our 18th Birthday Party, to be held on Wednesday night, July
9th, included a 2008-2009 membership. Thanks to all for this amazing
and most gratifying show of support!
The annual election for the MAC (Manhattan Association of Cabarets)
Board of Directors is approaching! There are six Director seats open
and MAC is looking for folks who are willing and able to commit time,
creativity and effort to step forward and throw his/her hat in the
ring. Deadline for nominations is Saturday, August 2nd. Complete information
about the MAC board elections can be found by visiting www.macnyc.com/aboutmac.htm
.
More HERE & THERE items appear at the bottom of this issue - last
minute items that come in just before we "go to press" as well as
a report on shows seen since the last issue.
NOW FOR SOME NEWS ABOUT CABARET
In an effort to cut down on "repeated" events, except for announcements
of programs offered by cabaret membership organizations, and shows
where guests change regularly, cabaret news items will usually appear
just once in the newsletter in abbreviated form. Events advertised
on the website will be mentioned in every issue, and events offering
discounts to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE are mentioned in every
MIDWEEK issue. As with all live entertainment events, performers are
subject to change without notice.

ABOUT CABARET NEWS IN THE NEWSLETTER AND ON THE WEBSITE
How do you get an item posted in the CABARET NEWS section of the CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE website, in the DATEBOOK/DIARY and in the twice-weekly
newsletter? Just e-mail a press release of at least four or five paragraphs,
giving the complete information on your show, CD release or other
cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available.
Please send complete information - and do not merely e-mail a copy
of your flier or a reference to a website. If you don't have a press
release, just click here: http://www.svhamstra.com/PressRelease1.shtml
and fill out the information as completely as possible - or use the
items asked for as a guide to the information I need. Just send in
your press release or listings request in simple txt format if possible,
and send any photos as attachments, not imbedded within the e-mail.
The more information the better.
Because of the large number of items received, we can only use
news of event just once, so we try not to get too far ahead in the
news. There are a few exceptions to the "just once" rule: If the
event is advertised on the website it will be repeated in every
issue of the newsletter; If the event offers a discount to members
of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE it will be included in each MID-WEEK issue
of the newsletter; Major benefits where ALL proceeds are given to
the charity named will be mentioned in every issue as well as major
cabaret events like cabaret festivals and galas; We also include
at least once each week those regular (monthly, weekly, etc.) events
with guests who change each performance, like SETH'S BROADWAY CHATTERBOX,
BOB EGAN'S MONDAY SHOWCASE and the like.
MORE "HERE & THERE"
I got so involved with adding items to the listings section this morning,
I don't have too much time for this section - hopefully I will get
most of the items in my notes included before my "deadline".
Shows I want to see this week?
TUESDAY: Poor Baby Bree at DON'T TELL MAMA at 8:30 pm - I've seen
it before, and both Daniel and I want to return. Not your usual
cabaret show - a little dark, and a little obscure at times, and
it is more of an experience than a show.
WEDNESDAY: Guy Pride at THE DUPLEX at 7:00 pm - another show I've
seen before - clever, witty, well written with a handsome cast of
talented vocalists. Then one of the nicest ladies in cabaret, singer/songwriter/pianist
Clare Cooper has a CD release show of her own music at DON'T TELL
MAMA at 9:00 pm. Should be interesting.
THURSDAY: Seth Rudetsky 6:00 pm BROADWAY CHATTERBOX has been cancelled,
giving me a chance to catch Vickie Phillips show at 7:00 pm at DON'T
TELL MAMA.
Let's see if I have time for a few mini-reviews.
Please note that just because I liked or didn't like a show, does
not mean that you will or won't. Tastes differ, opinions differ, and
sometimes the actual performances differ from night to night. I purposely
do not read reviews of shows I plan to see (or even have seen) so
that I can maintain a level of honesty in what I write. Several years
ago, for example, a reviewer mentioned to me after a show that he
truly loved the performance. But when his review came out a few days
later he expressed pure disdain for the show. It seems that a very
respected reviewer from a major publication gave the show a "pan"
and I guess the fellow I talked to didn't want to "go against the
grain."
On Tuesday, the 17th, I was at DON'T TELL MAMA for Kevin Dozier's
debut show at 7:00 pm. (He is back at MAMA'S tonight at 7:00 pm
for the final show of his series). A cabaret debut show is always
a tough challenge to a performer. Kevin decided to form a team with
some of the best in the business - director Scott Barnes and musical
director Christopher Marlowe. With these talented folks on hand,
I naturally expected a great show, with pithy patter, interesting
arrangements and sparkling song choices. As the saying goes, when
one expects a lot, one is taking a chance on being disappointed.
Frankly, I was disappointed. The song list was uninspired (mostly
showtunes), the musical direction at times seemed "phoned in" and
the "patter" was less than minimal - perhaps one or two sentences
about discovering cabaret songs by listening to a Nancy LaMott recording,
and a line or two about the discovery of his sexual orientation.
Mr. Dozier has good vocals and a pleasing personality, gone to waste
on a rather boring, bland and unfocused show.
Wednesday night I was back at DON'T TELL
MAMA for Gretchen Reinhagen's new show at 7:00 pm. Ms. Reinhagen
is one of those under-discovered gems in cabaret. She always delivers
a solid performance, can switch from ballad to belt without catching
her breath, and her show "How 'bout Them Apples" had a simple through-line
regarding those things in life that annoy us, that gave her plenty
of room to show the wide spectrum of talents she possesses as well
as include a wide variety of songs and song styles. The show is
directed by Barry Kleinbort with Musical Director David Gaines.
"How 'bout Them Apples" was an expression handed down for generations
in her family - first heard by Gretchen from her grandmother/mentor.
Partly biographical, the show was totally entertaining - she even
neatly and cleverly recovered from a couple of missed lyrics. Ms.
Reinhagen has two more shows lined up, for this Tuesday night, June
24th and next week Monday, June 30th, both at 7:00 pm.
I also saw Marta Sanders at METROPOLITAN ROOM on Friday, June 20th
at 7:30 pm and Laura Hull in the same room on Sunday the 22nd at 7:00
pm. I will have to cover them in the next issue on Thursday. Neither
performer has a pending show soon.
Once again I tried to cover all the new cabaret related news items
in the listing section above - items from previous newsletters can
be found in the DIARY/DATEBOOK section on the website at http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/CabaretEventListing.shtml
. If your news item has not yet appeared it could be because we haven't
reached your "performance week yet" - we try to write of events taking
place in the next 3 weeks or so. Items only appear once in the newsletter
(unless it is a regular event featuring different performers each
week, a banner advertiser, a benefit, or offers a CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE discount).
And that is just about the way it was.
Until Thursday, then.
