HERE & THERE - PART I
Its your last chance - as of the sending of this issue I have 10 tickets left to sell for tomorrow night's CABARET HOTLINE HOLIDAY PARTY at DON'T TELL MAMA at 9:15 pm. We've (Sue Matsuki, Edd Clark, John Hoglund & myself) lined up a fantastic bunch of performers and a bunch of super-surprise guest performers that will "knock your Christmas stockings right off your fireplace."
In addition, the cast of Hector Coris' super-funny revue WHAT'S THE POINT (which opens at THE LAURIE BEECHMAN THEATER this week) will be on hand to take a turn on stage. And listen to these fantastic award-winning performers: Sidney Myer! Marta Sanders! Marcus Simeone! Karen Mack! Laura Hull! Scot Albertson! Jose Luis! Each show we put on features one or two newcomers, and this show we will introduce you to Dominic Sheahan-Stahl - he made his sold-out cabaret debut at MAMA'S earlier this year. John McMahon will serve as musical director. It will be a show you won't quickly forget.
At our annual CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE Birthday shows in July we recognize cabaret performers/supporters to honor two cabaret icons of the past - Dottie Burman and Jeff Matson. We do this to help us remember with gratitude their names and their contributions to the art of cabaret. For our holiday show (which we plan to also make an annual event) we will honor another cabaret icon, recently departed from the cabaret scene, D. Jay Bradley. Jay was not only a great musician - his arrangements were extraordinary - and a great piano bar host, he also believed in Christmas as no one before or since ever has. Each year, for over a dozen years, he would put on a series of Christmas shows - and every year the show was different. At our show on the 11th (that's next Tuesday) we will celebrate Christmas and the spirit of giving as well. Noted cabaret writer/reviewer John Hoglund has chosen a number of Cabaret CDs that he has judged tops for holiday giving. The best of the best will receive a special award named after D. Jay.
Oh, did I mention? Every paid attendee at the show gets a FREE CD! Gift wrapped! You can keep it as a present for yourself or give it as a gift for the holidays! And CDs will be available for purchase after the show!

I know - I know - I've been really pushing ticket sales - I just want to deliver a full house for the great lineup of talent we are presenting tomorrow night. With just 10 seats to go, we are thisclose to making it happen!
There have been several obstacles to overcome for this event - we hit a huge "bump in the road" soon after we started our publicity drive and that set us back almost a week and a half as we scurried to revise and adapt the main theme of the show. Then we happened to choose a date when another benefit is taking place at Carnegie Hall for the THE LAURIE STRAUSS LEUKEMIA FOUNDATION (http://www.lslf.org/) - which is featuring a number of cabaret "names". Normally we get a press release for this event well in advance, but we didn't find out this year until after we had booked our date at DON'T TELL MAMA.
Finally, I got sick and another member of our team was briefly hospitalized and our musical director was out of town on a gig and out of e-mail contact for several days. All in all it has been a struggle to get our show on the boards. But we're ready - and bursting with excitement over the fantastic lineup that we have - including a surprise appearance by one of the top vocal groups in town!
Well, its semi-official anyway. For weeks we have been sitting on a story - a rumor - but we finally had a chance to confirm it. Lennie Watts will be leaving his job as booking manager of THE METROPOLITAN ROOM at the end of this year. As he explained to us the other night, he is leaving to devote more time to performing, directing, and leading cabaret workshops and classes. He also needs a chance to catch up on a lot of personal business that he has been unable to handle - and also spend more time in St. Louis with his recently widowed mother. We wish him well in whatever projects he takes up - he indeed has done much to move the art of cabaret to a higher level in this town and will be missed.
Lennie's replacement has already been appointed. Tanya Holt - who has been an employee of THE METROPOLITAN ROOM since it opened, and also worked with Lennie at his former club THE ENCORE, is already at work booking acts for 2009 and beyond. Tanya has been a good friend as well, and we look forward to working with her in her new position. Daniel and I can also rest assured in the fact that there will be a steady supply of carrot cake on hand when we attend shows at the club. Congratulations!
SAVE THE DATE: Tuesday, March 10th at 7:00 pm at THE LAURIE BEECHMAN: The Second Annual CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE - MARCH IS CABARET MONTH CELEBRATION.
We have also been tracking down another rumor and at least confirmed some of the facts, so we can pass them along here. A new cabaret venue is being currently planned (renovations are already underway, we hear) for mid-town Manhattan. It is expected to open some time in March 2009. We can also report that Lennie Watts has assured us that he is not the booking manager of the new space - and someone else has already been appointed.
Congratulations to DAVENPORT'S in Chicago on their 10th Anniversary. They are celebrating the whole month of November by featuring a number of "one-night-encores" of shows from 2008 and past years all month. The special anniversary shows are so marked in the DIARY/DATEBOOK section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website.
I am told that some good seats still remain for the BROADWAY UNPLUGGED show next week Monday night, November 17th at THE TOWN HALL. Of all the terrific shows produced/hosted by Scott Siegel, this one is always extra special. See today's TOP STORY for details on all the fantastic performers lined up for this edition - and they will be unencumbered by microphone cords and other electronic gizmos - pure, unadulterated sound! Not to be missed! Its a great chance for cabaret folks to see some of the best of Broadway and a chance for Broadway folks to see some of the best of cabaret - a win-win situation!
More HERE & THERE items appear at the bottom of this issue - last minute items that come in just before we "go to press" as well as a report on shows seen since the last issue.

MORE "HERE & THERE" PART II
Still a little queazy about getting out and about in inclement weather after my bout with the flu last week, I only got to go to two cabaret shows since last issue.
Like the proverbial "moth to the flame" I simply cannot resist Grace Cosgrove GRACE NOTES - A Singers' Soiree" shows held monthly at DON'T TELL MAMA. So I was back on Thursday, November 5th for the latest edition. With surprise guest star Valerie Lemon on the bill (I saw her sneaking into the room while having a "happy hour" pre-show libation in the piano bar, this choice was a "no-brainer." (If you recall, I had several cabaret shows to choose from last Thursday). And who could pass up a chance to hear Emmy Award Winning Record Producer, Singer & Songwriter Paul Rolnik in a rare live cabaret performance? And, as if two cabaret stars wasn't enough, Miles Phillips (2008 MAC Award For Outstanding Male Vocalist) and Lynne Halliday (Cabaret Singer & Actress) were also on the bill. And an up-and-coming 4-gal vocal group, the Delivery Girls (Mary Carey, Amie Carey, April Henry & Tracy Stark), newcomer Clarice Mazanec and singer/songwriter Jim Cargill were in the show! These monthly events always seem to have something for everyone! Ruth gathers her performers from upcoming cabaret schedules as well as recommendations from others - a great chance for performers to try out new material and arrangements, and for newcomers to introduce themselves to cabaret.
Grace has a big event planned for the next GRACE NOTES show in December 4th at DON'T TELL MAMA at 6:30 pm - including a live CD recording of the show. I suggest you put your reservations in early - the lineup is fantastic!
I broke a long-standing personal tradition again yesterday - I attended a Sunday cabaret show. I usually like to take Sundays as a "personal day" but I simply had to see Jackie Draper's "Between Yesterday and Tomorrow" show at 5:00 pm at THE LAURIE BEECHMAN THEATER. I have to find a faster route to THE BEECHMAN - no matter how early I leave the apartment, I always seem to arrive late for shows here - and yesterday was no exception. I didn't make a reservations (my bad) and the place was packed when I arrived just at 5:05 pm. But host Kenney Bell always seems to find a good seat for me - this one was close to the bar so I could take advantage of the extra light coming from the bar area.
Ms. Draper always presents "thoughtful" shows - almost philosophical in nature. This show was no exception. Where have I been? - where am I now" - where am I going? questions we often ask and answers that seem to change in spite of ourselves. She was ably supported by one of the finest arrangers in cabaret, Gregory Toroian (with another fine talent, Ritt Henn, on bass). An elegant song list - with several songs in French (Ms. Draper often summered there) - and many fun tunes from the likes of Dave Frishberg (and several numbers by Jackie's favorite musical team - Michel LeGrand and Alan & Marilyn Bergman) gave the show a lightness and charm perfect for a Sunday afternoon. There was even a dance interlude or two with her guest Franklin Ayala.
With a full house at both performances of this run, I am certain Ms. Draper will return with one or two encore performances.
I know this may seem awfully far off, but if you are planning a cabaret event for the month of March 2009, please send me a press release as early as you can. Once again we will be celebrating MARCH IS CABARET MONTH and have a special website (http://www.marchiscabaretmonth.com/ ) to promote this special month. We will be updating you in the weeks to come about cabaret shows and cabaret organization celebrations around the world. Stay tuned.
SAVE THE DATE: Tuesday, March 10th at 7:00 pm at THE LAURIE BEECHMAN: The Second Annual CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE - MARCH IS CABARET MONTH CELEBRATION.

If you want more details, send me an email at stuhamstra@cabaretsings.com. Meantime we continue to add new pages and new information each day.
I covered nearly all the news through November 22nd with lots more still on file. Since we can only cover a new item once in these newsletters (with exception of shows running ads or offering discounts, benefits and organization events) be sure to check the DIARY/DATEBOOK pages, organized by date, for events coming up that have already been written on in the newsletter. We also list such events for "seven nights out" in the newsletter at the bottom of each date.
I hope you at least scanned the news and listings items in this issue - there are a lot of great shows listed with a lot of great performers and a lot of great songs and show themes. Is your event listed? Send me that press release! I ran out of time - I ran out of space - but I haven't run out of news.
And that is just about the way it was. Support cabaret and live entertainment - see a show or two this week!
Until Thursday, then.
Hugs & Stuff,
STU
