CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE #091202 - Monday, December 7, 2009
Since 1990 Your First, Best and Only Complete Source of Cabaret and Nightlife News

NOW IN OUR 20th YEAR SPREADING THE NEWS OF CABARET!
COVERING CABARET & NIGHTLIFE ON THE INTERNET SINCE 1997!

If it's anything to do with cabaret, you'll probably read it here first!

These newsletters are a FREE service to promote the art and artists and entertainers of nightlife & cabaret.

HERE & THERE - PART I

I spent the entire morning adding as many Holiday & Christmas-themed cabaret events as possible to this issue of the newsletter, and managed to get all of them in except two items received from performers and/or publicists (for the 23rd & 24th). There may be more holiday shows on the schedules I receive from the various cabaret venues, which I will add when space allows (and information is complete).

As a result, there's very little room for "Here & There" items today - compounded by the fact that I actually got out and about yesterday (rare for me on a Sunday) and saw two cabaret shows! Of course, that meant I didn't get a head start on the Monday issue, which I usually do on Sunday.

In Thursday's issue we hope to wind up our coverage of Holiday Themed cabaret events - you can see the whole list on our special CABARET CELEBRATES THE HOLIDAYS - link on the home page on the website. If you have a holiday event, please send a press release in fast - and remember, a flier is not a press release!

We will also be adding all the New Year's Eve events that we have received press releases for in the Thursday issue, and they will also be added to the special CABARET CELEBRATES NEW YEAR'S EVE page on the website. If you have a New Year's Eve event, please send a press release in fast - and remember, a flier is not a press release!

Here's an item from the MEMBERS' ONLY NEWSLETTER I sent out on Friday - copied here because it's important.

I am not a member of FaceBook, but someone forwarded to me the following note which was posted on FB about long-time friend and charter member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, Gregory Kennell (who happened to design our HOTLINE logo):

"Greg is currently very ill with viral meningitis. He is currently in isolation in an ICU and is receiving the best medical care possible. His family is with him and his affairs are being cared for by his work and family. His family asks that you please DO NOT attempt to visit him, the hospital will allow only direct family near him...."

Thoughts and prayers go out on Greg's behalf - and to his family and friends. My understanding is that this is a very serious situations and I will try to keep you informed via TWITTER at http://twitter.com/cabarethotline and the BLOG at http://cabarethotlineonline.blogspot.com/ .

Addendum: Cabaret reviewer John Hoglund reports that he visited the hospital on Saturday December 5th, and there was no change in Greg's condition.

There's an interesting article about Cynthia Crane, who is currently performing at DON'T TELL MAMA in NEW YORK MAGAZINE: http://nymag.com/daily/intel/2009/12 getting_back_at_bernie_through.html

Cynthia has two more performances scheduled for this show: Tuesday, December 8th at 7:00 pm; and Wednesday, December 9th at 7:30 pm. I plan to be there on Wednesday. Details in the listings for those dates below.

Other cabaret plans (now that I am once more healthy & fit) include catching the debut of a new vocal group "Marquee Five" at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM at 7:00 pm (details on todays home page at http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/ ) and SUE & EDD'S FABULOUS CHRISTMAS SHOW, with Sue Matsuki & Edd Clark on Tuesday night, also at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (See Diary/Datebook on the website at
http://www.svhamstra.com.com/CabaretEventListing.shtml )

Cynthia Crane's latest CD "THE TIME HAS COME", recorded live at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM is now available, perfect timing for Holiday giving. Produced by Lookout Jazz Records, the CD also features pianist Paul Greenwood and bassist Boots Maleson, and a delightful collection of songs and patter that in some ways provide a further step to solving Cynthia's dilema presented in her last CD, "If I Knew Now (What I Knew Then)" Very topical in both her song choices and the patter she uses to set up the numbers, Ms. Crane relates the wisdom she has gained through her life's experiences. ADELE ZANE RELEASES THIRD CD "A STRANGER IN TOWN"

Adele Zane's newest CD, "A Stranger in Town" is probably the perfect companion to your broken heart or to the heart you've just broken. For singer/songwriter Zane's third CD she has enlisted the aid of virtuoso guitarist Andrew Green as both collaborator and arranger. More than willing to blur the boundaries between jazz, rock, pop and country, the duo have succeeded in creating a highly polished and well thought out merger of the genres. Todd Isler on hadgini, Jorge Roeder on bass and Jordan Perlson on drums round out a stellar selection of backing musicians. Jim Clouse makes a special guest appearance on drums and Hamcrest Riverton hands in a memorable cameo on Zane's original, Girl at the Bar. The CD is available at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/adele3 .

Using her customary, and delightful, mix of standards, show tunes and rare material, she has chosen a highly theatrical repertoire that is, perhaps, more like a score than a set of cabaret songs. She is joined by Wells Hanley as Music Director, Brian Griffin on percussion and an orchestra of bass, guitar and sax provided by Colin Killalea. Gerry Geddes directs. There is a $15 cover plus a 2-drink minimum

NYC: TIM DICKENS BRINGS AUSTRALIAN HIT SHOW TO THE DUPLEX

After a knockout headline season at the 2009 Melbourne Fringe Festival, and two sold-out runs at Melbourne's famed BUTTERFLY CLUB, 2009 Under Our Wing award winner Tom Dickins brings his acclaimed show "Where Was I?" to LA, San Francisco, Seattle, New York and Boston. The New York show will be on one night only at THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/ ) on Tuesday, December 22nd at 7:00 pm. In his semi-autobiographical, fully fantastical cabaret, "Where Was I?" Tom Dickins runs, stumbles and stalls on a scattered trip around the world, in search of answers to the question: "Are you running away from something - or toward it?" Tom runs to and from love, identity, sex, debt, the South Korean National Male Cheerleading Squad and a myriad of mad travelers, accompanied by travelling companion, anima, and 'ravishing redhead' Jennifer Kingwell on piano. There is a $15 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.

I did something rare yesterday - I went to two cabaret shows. Normally I take Sunday's off from cabaret, but except for my birthday show last Monday night, my cold kept me out of cabaret rooms since before Thanksgiving! At 4:00 pm I was at Gretchen Reinhagen's SPECIAL KAYE tribute to Kaye Ballard show at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM, and then took the R train uptown to DON'T TELL MAMA to arrive just in time for Joan Jaffe's "SINGS FUNNY" show at 6:00 pm. Gretchen has one more performance of her show on this Thursday, December 10th at 7:30 pm (see listings above for details). No time for a full review today - but this is definitely a MUST SEE, 5-STAR, show of the year, performance. Evoking the musical comedy chops of Carol Burnett, with special material created especially for Ms. Ballard as well as other songs she was known for, this show is an hour of revelation, fantastic vocals and darn-good entertainment!

Joan Jaffe's show is part stand-up, part burlesque, part dance, and all good fun. She returns with two more performance in January. More on this to come - see listings above for details.
