RICHARD SKIPPER TO MC "MARCH IS CABARET MONTH" GALA

Tom Stajmiger, who is producing the 2010 MARCH IS CABARET MONTH GALA on behalf of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE at the THE WEST BANK CAFE/LAURIE BEECHMAN THEATER (407 West 42nd Street, NYC - 212-695-6909 - http://www.westbankcafe.com/ ) on Tuesday, March 2nd at 7:00 pm announced that long-time cabaret performer Richard Skipper will be the MC of this year's event. The Gala is the kick-off event of the 3rd Annual MARCH IS CABARET MONTH celebration. Tickets will go on sale shortly. Meantime, sponsors are being sought to defray expenses of the world-wide promotion offers and the gala. (see related item below)

Richard Skipper has received artistic and critical acclaim over the past 15 years as Carol Channing. 2009 found Richard getting back to his roots and appearing more as himself. In July, he and Dana Lorge launched WEDNESDAY NIGHT AT THE IGUANA at The Iguana Restaurant in NYC, a weekly variety show harkening back to the variety shows of our youth, which has become a popular weekly event in the cabaret community, featuring a number of performers each week, as well as open-mic opportunities for those attending.

Stajmiger is currently contacting a number of performers from the world of cabaret and Broadway to perform at the show, and names will be announced as arrangements are made. As with all live entertainment events, performers are subject to change without notice.

The original MARCH IS CABARET MONTH promotion, which ended several years ago, was an attempt by cabaret venue owners to increase the awareness - and attendance - of cabaret events during the slow months of January and February. And here in NYC, folks who were nominated for MAC awards, in those days usually given at the end of March or beginning of April, were urged to produce reprises of their shows of the previous year duing January and February, so that voters could more intelligently make their choices on the preliminary and final ballots. In its early days, the month of March used to begin with the annual BACK STAGE BISTRO awards gala and end with the MAC AWARDS gala.

However, as MAC began to reschedule its awards show later in April and into May, and the BISTRO AWARDS show for several years became a private event for winners and their friends only, the concept of MARCH IS CABARET MONTH faded away.

In January of 2008, CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE took upon itself the task of resurrecting MARCH IS CABARET MONTH and with the support of performers, venues and cabaret organizations, is once more attempting to make the public more "cabaret aware" during this period. Special MARCH IS CABARET MONTH events are held around the world, highlighted by a special MARCH IS CABARET MONTH event presented in NYC during the month of March. Our hope it to continue MARCH IS CABARET MONTH as an annual month-long event promoted around the world to make people aware of the art and artists of cabaret.

SEEKING SPONSORS FOR "MARCH IS CABARET MONTH" SPONSORS

We're looking for sponsors for MARCH IS CABARET MONTH promotion and gala - in $100 units. As we did with our November CD show, we want to cover all our expenses in advance so that we can concentrate our efforts completely on promotion of the entire international promotion program rather than fund raising or trying to sell every last ticket to the gala at THE LAURIE BEECHMAN on March 2nd. We currently have three sponsors - the more sponsors, the bigger the promotion can be!

HERE & THERE - PART I

While this week has brought slightly warmer daytime temperatures to the NYC area, the cold continues along from the mid-west to the Atlantic, and from Maine to Florida. And now we hear from our cabaret friends in London that they too are experiencing a cooler winter and even a rare snowstorm or two. Brrr.

But the weather has given me plenty of time to spend at the computer, and not just on the website. A whole series of promotional efforts will begin on February 1st on behalf of MARCH IS CABARET MONTH - press releases, flier distribution, reopening if the special website, etc. And the time indoors has allowed me to get a head start.

See the announcement above about the signing of Richard Skipper to serve as MC for our NYC Gala on March 2nd. Other MARCH IS CABARET MONTH events are already being planned in other parts of the country and in other places as well. All MARCH IS CABARET MONTH will be promoted in the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE newsletters, and on both the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website and the special MARCH IS CABARET MONTH website, as well as the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE BLOG and special MARCH IS CABARET MONTH Twitter timeline - http://twitter.com/marchiscabaret

Save the date: Tuesday, March 2nd, at 7:00 pm - the 3rd Annual MARCH IS CABARET MONTH GALA! at THE WEST BANK CAFE/LAURIE BEECHMAN THEATER (407 West 42nd Street, NYC - 212-695-6909 - http://www.westbankcafe.com/ ). MCd by Richard Skipper - tickets will go on sale soon.

Lots of important news in the listings below - each issue we try to include up to 30 new items that have never appeared in past issues (we include in that number shows that repeat weekly or monthly but feature different guest performers each show). Don't forget to check out the special announcement we received last night from producer Scott Siegel regarding the announced performers for the 8th Annual Nightlife Awards at THE TOWN HALL (123 West 43rd Street, NYC - 212-997-1929 - http://www.the-townhall-nyc.org/ ) on Monday, January 25th at 7:00 pm. The Nightlife Awards winners are chosen by a panel of two-dozen critics and journalists in the fields of cabaret, jazz and comedy. I took part in the voting for the winner of the cabaret award - all award winners are invited to perform in the show rather than give acceptance speeches - and the list of performers will be expanded soon to include those that are able to take part in the show.

I am hopeful that Tom Stajmiger, who is producing the 2010 MARCH IS CABARET MONTH GALA on behalf of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, can snag one of two of the winners to take part in our show. He's already shared with me the names of performers already contacter - his regular work producing performance events around the country has given him contacts with some of the best.

More HERE & THERE items appear at the bottom of this issue - including any last minute news items that come in just before we "go to press" and more comments and commentary on the art and artists of cabaret. And even more news can be found on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE BLOG

NYC: WORLD SAXOPHONE QUARTET MEETS M'BOOM

Nearly three decades have passed since that glorious 1981 evening, when an audience of three thousand gathered in the cathedral of St. John the Divine to hear what Max Roach called "A Grand Collaboration: A concert by M'Boom and the World Saxophone Quartet." For those who were there and those who weren't, this "Great Collaboration" is an eagerly anticipated sequel, an event that promises to get 2010 off to a roaring start. This time, the two legendary ensembles convene for a week at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080 - http://www.birdlandjazz.com/ ), Tuesday through Saturday, January 19th through 23rd, with shows at 8:30 & 11:00 pm. M'Boom, which has numbered as many as 10 players, now include three of its founding members, Joe Chambers, Warren Smith, and Ray Mantilla, along with Eli Fountain and Steve Barrios. The World Saxophone Quartet, founded in 1976, is the most celebrated saxophone ensemble in jazz history, and is made up of three founding members: David Murray, Hamiet Bluiett, Oliver Lake, plus James Carter in the seat originally occupied by Julius Hemphill. These two ensembles fuse together with an almost mystical cohesion, intensity, and flat-out joy. There is a $30 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

MORE "HERE & THERE" PART II

With our new newsletter format, we have been able to trim about 15% off the size of these issues. And we have some more format changes we are testing for future issues. Stay tuned.

Now before you write me to ask if I am OK - considering the short HERE & THERE section this issue, let me assure you that all is well. I have been working at this computer for nearly a week getting the pages redone for 2010, while at the same time trying to find sponsors for the MARCH IS CABARET MONTH promotion (hundreds for e-mails sent), that I am suffering from a severe case of "writers' block". Plus I am on "news overload" due to the many unreliable events going on in the world outside the area of cabaret. The mind is whirring with thoughts and ideas but the fingers remain poised, motionless, over the keys. As I often say, I have a great author/editor relationship with myself. I'm trying my best to stay off the subject of politics (I have totally given up on watching the major "news" channels except the first 5 minutes after the half-hour when real news might slip in). If you want my personal thoughts check me out on my personal Twitter account http://twitter.com/stuhamstra (the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE Twitter account is http://twitter.com/cabarethotline )

SPECIAL REMINDER TO MAC MEMBERS: The application deadline to get the 2010 awards preliminary voting ballot is January 16th. Download application forms and rules at http://www.MACNYC.com/ . Please read all the rules and application forms carefully. Incomplete submissions will be disqulaified. The 2010 MAC AWARDS GALA will be held on Tuesday, May 4th at BB KING'S BLUES CLUB (237 West 42nd Street, NYC - 212-997-4144 - http://www.bbkingsblues.com/ ) - ticket order forms will be mailed with the final ballots to all MAC members. (2009 MAC memberships expired December 31, 2009 - you can't vote if you're not a member.)

It's never too late to join as a member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE - for just $20 you can become a SILVER member through July 5, 2010! With this issue we have included all news items for events through January 30th, 2010, for which actual press releases were received. If your news event is before that date and hasn't been included in this newsletter or previous newsletters, it just might be that we didn't receive complete information, or, even worse, only received a flier instead of a press release. We do not accept fliers, e-invites and similar items as press releases. We need the information in a format that we can "cut & paste" for use in the newsletter and on the website. This not only saves a lot of retyping, it also means fewer errors (especially miss-spelled names and garbled phone numbers). A FLIER IS NOT A PRESS RELEASE (and please, no PDF files - txt or doc releases only). Thanks.

Save the date: Tuesday, March 2nd, at 7:00 pm - the 3rd Annual MARCH IS CABARET MONTH GALA! at THE WEST BANK CAFE/LAURIE BEECHMAN THEATER (407 West 42nd Street, NYC - 212-695-6909 - http://www.westbankcafe.com/ ). Tickets go on sale on the website soon.

I close the issue feeling really great - just got a press release that I've been waiting for (for about 2 weeks) from a pal, and also just got an inquiry about a possible sponsorship for the MARCH IS CABARET MONTH GALA. As my pal Daniel would say: Kool!

And that's just about the way it was. Until Monday, then.
