2010 MARCH IS CABARET MONTH UPDATE

Tom Stajmiger, who is producing the 2010 MARCH IS CABARET MONTH GALA on behalf of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE at the THE WEST BANK CAFE/LAURIE BEECHMAN THEATER (407 West 42nd Street, NYC - 212-695-6909 - http://www.westbankcafe.com/ ) on Tuesday, March 2nd at 7:00 pm is currently contacting a number of performers from the world of cabaret and Broadway to perform at the show, and names will be announced as arrangements are made. As with all live entertainment events, performers are subject to change without notice.

Last week it was announced that long-time cabaret performer Richard Skipper will be the MC of this year's event. The Gala is the kick-off event of the 3rd Annual MARCH IS CABARET MONTH celebration. Tickets will go on sale shortly. Meantime, sponsors are being sought to defray expenses of the world-wide promotion offers and the gala. (see related item below)

We're still looking for sponsors for MARCH IS CABARET MONTH promotion and gala - in $100 units. As we did with our November CD show, we want to cover all our expenses in advance so that we can concentrate our efforts completely on promotion of the entire international promotion program rather than fund raising or trying to sell every last ticket to the gala at THE LAURIE BEECHMAN on March 2nd. We currently have three sponsors - the more sponsors, the bigger the promotion can be!

HERE & THERE - PART I

I got sort of a late start this morning in purring together the listings for this issue - I was hoping to finish off listings on all events through January 31st, and even a week beyond, but the 2010 NY NIGHTLIFE AWARD winners were announced overnight and I works for a while getting the release "prepped" for this issue, as well as posting it on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE BLOG ( http://cabarethotlineonline.blogspot.com/ ), posting it on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE MESSAGE BOARD, adding it as a featured item on the website http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/ and sending out a TWITTER announcement to the nearly 200 folks who have signed up as followers.

We actually did succeed in adding all the items for which we received press releases from performers and/or publicists (at least the usable and complete ones), but we didn't have time to include all the listings provided by the club schedules (which are often very incomplete and require extensive rewriting).

I again took part in the voting, along with about two dozen other nightlife and live entertainment writers, editors and reviewers, for this year's award winners. I want to congratulate all of this year's winners - this award is probably the most prestigious entertainment award in town in the fields of cabaret, jazz and comedy. I hope as many of you as possible will join me in attending this year's show. This is the only award show in town where there are no acceptance speeches - the winners (along with other fantastic personalities in these three fields) perform instead. Coming in January, this show sort of "kicks off" the year for live-entertainment lovers. Details in the article at the top of this issue and also in the listings below under January 25th. We'll be passing along additional performer announcements in the weeks to come.

CABARET AUDIENCE MEMBER TIP: Don't always believe them when you try to make a reservation for a show, and they tell you the show is SOLD OUT. First ask if your name can be added to the waiting list - it will be recorded and you should be notified if there are cancellations. I say "should be" because not all clubs follow through. Call the day of the show and double check. But, in addition, unless you have made other plans for the same evening, and if you have the time to be slightly inconvenienced, and if this is a show you particularly want to see, show up at the club a half hour early, and personally add your name to the room host's list as "standby & present." Nearly every so-called "SOLD OUT SHOW" I've been to ends up with 3 or more folks who made reservations who don't arrive - or at least don't arrive by the scheduled showtime. Those seats become available immediately at showtime and "waiting listees" are seated according to the time they signed in with the host. Even if the folks who made reservations arrive late, they will have forfeited their seats if there is no more available. Just another reason to 1) Make a Reservation and 2) show up for the show at least 15 minutes before showtime.

Just a quick note: cabaret reviewer/writer/editor, the legendary* John Hoglund, celebrates his 38th birthday yet again on Friday, January 15th. (* he makes me say that) John will be holding his annual party/revelry (I was tempted to say orgy but checked my dictionary and figured it might result in a lawsuit) at CATERINA'S (316 East 53rd Street, NYC - 212-355-5360) starting around 8:00 pm. RESERVATIONS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY - see next item for the reason why.

Legendary (truly deserved appellation in this case) piano bar/open mic entertainer Jerry Scott announced Sunday that his 2-year run at CATERINA'S (316 East 53rd Street, NYC - 212-355-5360) will come to a close this Saturday, January 16th (9-12 pm), since the owner is retiring and closing the club after 38 years. Jerry is there on Friday & Saturday, and urges everyone who wants to attend to make a reservation - he predicts the place will be packed even more than usual. Jerry is already making plans for his next piano bar home and might even make an announcement of same this week at the restaurant.

SPECIAL REMINDER TO MAC MEMBERS: The application deadline to get the 2010 awards preliminary voting ballot is this Saturday, January 16th.APPLICATIONS MUST BE RECEIVER BY MAIL ON THAT DATE - no "drop off" applications accepted. Download application forms and rules at http://www.MACNYC.com/ . Please read all the rules and application forms carefully. Incomplete submissions will be disqulaified. The 2010 MAC AWARDS GALA will be held on Tuesday, May 4th at BB KING'S BLUES CLUB (237 West 42nd Street, NYC - 212-997-4144 - http://www.bbkingsblues.com/ ) - ticket order forms will be mailed with the final ballots to all MAC members. (2009 MAC memberships expired December 31, 2009 - you can't vote if you're not a member.)

Save the date: Tuesday, March 2nd, at 7:00 pm - the 3rd Annual MARCH IS CABARET MONTH GALA! at THE WEST BANK CAFE/LAURIE BEECHMAN THEATER (407 West 42nd Street, NYC - 212-695-6909 - http://www.westbankcafe.com/ ). MCd by Richard Skipper - tickets will go on sale soon. Still looking for sponsors.

MORE "HERE & THERE" PART II

I hate to have weather.com determine my cabaret plans, but that has sort of been the rule these past several days. I pay special attention to the "wind chill" data, since I do not have a car and do not use taxis - only public transportation (as a senior, bus fare is just $1.10 including one transfer - the nearest club is a $7 ride by taxi). Good news is that a "warming trend" (if you can call 40 degrees warm) is predicted starting mid-week. So, if all goes well, I'll be "out & about" "here & there" once again soon.

If you are presenting a cabaret show or event during the month of March, 2010, our MARCH IS CABARET MONTH promotion gives you a chance for extra promotion event at no extra charge: a second listing of your show on the MARCH IS CABARET MONTH website! All shows presented in March that include the phrase "MARCH IS CABARET MONTH" in their release materials will be included on the special website - and on that website the events are listed is special geographical sections so folks in various parts of the universe that visit the website can easily find an event playing in their area. The event listing will appear as usual on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website in the DIARY/DATEBOOK and in the newsletter as well.

There is no charge to have your item appear in the newsletter or on both websites. Just send in your release - and remember, a flier is not a press release (and please, no PDF files - no imbedded photos - txt or doc releases only). Items received with incomplete information cannot be used. We need the information in a format that we can "cut & paste" for use in the newsletter and on the website. This not only saves a lot of retyping, it also means fewer errors (especially miss-spelled names and garbled phone numbers).

And if your March event news item gets to me by February 20th we will include your event in a special MARCH IS CABARET MONTH press release going out to all cabaret news journalists and publications on our list. You include MARCH IS CABARET MONTH in your release and we'll include your info in ours!

By the way, the same banner and sidebar ads that run on the regular website also will appear on every page on the MARCH IS CABARET MONTH website at no extra charge - giving advertisers "more bang for their buck". Sadly, we have discontinued the CABARET FOR SENIORS program - maybe not forever, but at least for a while. We simply could not get enough folks to sign up (last count was just 35) to make the time and effort worthwhile. We did get some terrific feedback from those who joined the "over 65" program, and will try to find another method to reach out to my fellow seniors. All 35 folks who did join CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE for 2009-2010 and signed on for the special "sub-membership" will still have their current membership extended for an additional year, through July 5, 2011.

I need your help. My pal Daniel will be helping me update the PIANO BAR pages on the website over the next few weeks, which have become hopelessly out of date (there are just so many hours in a day). To make his job easier, please (if you have time) check out the section on the website and let me know of piano bar events that are not listed or events that are listed that no longer continue. There is a "contact us" button right on the page for additions & corrections. Your help will be really appreciated - I know of no other way to update the pages, since venues and entertainers rarely notify me of changes.

It's never too late to join as a member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE - for just $20 you can become a SILVER member through July 5, 2010! Show discounts, advertising rebates & discounts, a free CD Sale Page, and a host of other benefits await you. Your membership donations help us keep this operation going all year long. Just click on the JOIN HERE button at the top of every page on the website ( http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/Membership.shtml ) for details.

With this issue we have included all news items for appropriate events through January 31st, 2010, for which actual press releases were received. If your news event is before that date and hasn't been included in this newsletter or previous newsletters, it just might be that we didn't receive complete information, or, even worse, only received a flier instead of a press release. We do not accept fliers, e-invites and similar items as press releases. We need the information in a format that we can "cut & paste" for use in the newsletter and on the website. This not only saves a lot of retyping, it also means fewer errors (especially miss-spelled names and garbled phone numbers).
