HERE & THERE - PART I
It's Martin Luther King Day (USA) and the banks are closed but the stores are open with big sales and promotions - that's the way we in the US celebrate our national heros: holding special sales and promotions. There was a time (within my memory, so not that many years ago) when these holidays were celebrated with pageants, festivals, parades and in some cases (Memorial Day - formerly Decoration Day, Veterans Day - formerly Armistice Day) in quiet reflection on the heros we were celebrating. These days we celebrate at the Mall. This year's MLK day is perhaps a little muted by the events this past week in Haiti but never underestimate the persistance of the commercial interests to sell their wares.
If you are presenting a cabaret show or event during the month of March, 2010, our MARCH IS CABARET MONTH program gives you a chance for extra promotion event at no extra charge: a second listing of your show on the MARCH IS CABARET MONTH website! All shows presented in March that include the phrase "MARCH IS CABARET MONTH" in their release materials will be included on the special website - and the events are listed by geographical area so folks in various parts of the universe that visit the website can easily find an event playing nearby. All event listings will appear as usual on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website in the DIARY/DATEBOOK and in the newsletter as well.
There is no charge to have your item appear in the newsletter or on both websites. Just send in your release - and remember, a flier is not a press release. Items received with incomplete information cannot be used. We need the information in a format that we can "cut & paste" for use in the newsletter and on the website. This not only saves a lot of retyping, it also means fewer errors, miss-spelled names and garbled phone numbers. (Please, no PDF files - no imbedded photos - txt or doc releases only.)
And if your March event news item gets to me by February 20th we will include your event in a special MARCH IS CABARET MONTH press release going out to all cabaret news journalists and publications on our list. You include the phrase MARCH IS CABARET MONTH in your release and we'll include your info in ours!

MORE "HERE & THERE" PART II
We're sort of in the "calm before the storm" place today - we've covered just about all the January events and got a good cut into the February events for which releases have been received, but, except for THE BUTTERFLY CLUB in Melbourne, no February club schedules have been received yet. We look to these schedules as leads to additional cabaret listing items. Unfortunately, only a few clubs actually bother to send out releases or even schedules - something to keep in mind when you are choosing a venue to perform your show.
So, here's another "PERFORMER TIP": When discussing your show arrangements, find out from the booking manager of the venue exactly what promotional efforts the club is undertaking and what promotional efforts they expect from you. Some clubs have professional press folks on staff - but often they only use them to promote shows in which they have guaranteed the performer a contract fee. They might charge you extra for these services if you are simply renting the room for your show. Some venues offer a promotion page for your show on their website for no charge - some do not even have a website. Some venues send out detailed schedules to the local press, some do not. Some venues will be kind enough to include you in their customer mailing flier, while some do not even have an e-mail customer list for announcements. Know up front what can be expected - each venue has its own promotion procedures.
It's never too late to join as a member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE - for just $20 you can become a SILVER member through July 5, 2010! With this issue we have included (with a few exceptions) all news items for appropriate events through February 6th, 2010, for which actual press releases were received. If your news event is before that date and hasn't been included in this newsletter or previous newsletters, it just might be that we didn't receive complete information, or, even worse, only received a flier or a website link. We need the information in a format that we can "cut & paste" for use in the newsletter and on the website. This not only saves a lot of retyping, it also means fewer errors (especially miss-spelled names and garbled phone numbers). A FLIER IS NOT A PRESS RELEASE (and please, no PDF files - txt or doc releases only) and neither is a website link. Thanks.
Save the date: Tuesday, March 2nd, at 7:00 pm - the 3rd Annual MARCH IS CABARET MONTH GALA! at THE WEST BANK CAFE/LAURIE BEECHMAN THEATER (407 West 42nd Street, NYC - 212-695-6909 - http://www.westbankcafe.com/ ). Tickets go on sale on the website soon.

This issue is going out a little early today - I have an appointment with some very important people in the early afternoon and I need just a short nap so that I'll be "bright-eyed and bushy-tailed" rather than "sleepy-eyed and worn out" looking. We have a lot more to tell - and a Thursday issue coming up to tell it.
You can see all the events that have already appeared in previous newsletters on the website in the DIARY/DATEBOOK section (click on the button at the top of every page so labeled).
