HERE & THERE - PART I
We started out this issue with a particularly long but important news item about the BROADWAY BY THE YEAR series which gets under way on Monday, February 22nd - followed by an edited item about our own CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE MARCH IS CABARET MONTH GALA to be held on Tuesday, March 2nd at THE LAURIE BEECHMAN. This meant another issue where the "HERE & THERE" section (which I add last) has to be shortened. And on Monday we will begin our coverage of all the MARCH IS CABARET MONTH events taking place around the country (and the world, if we can make that happen). We have already received events from cabaret organizations promoting cabaret in March from Seattle, Chicago, NYC and Boston. These have been combined into a special MARCH IS CABARET MONTH press release to be sent out by our publicist, Don Schaffer. We hoped to get this out yesterday, but then the Chicago information came in. Hopefully I will be able to get all the new information to Don to send out before the weekend.
We received information this morning that BROADWAY BABY BISTRO is changing its name and folding it's website information into the BROADWAY COMEDY CLUB website. Cabaret will still be presented (the clubs share the same address) with Collette Black in charge of booking the cabaret acts. CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE will still be providing coverage for cabaret at the club, even though we don't usually cover comedy club events. Its a little bit of a financial setback for me. I have been the "webmaster" for the BROADWAY BABY BISTRO website since it opened. This means now that with ROSE'S TURN gone, DON'T TELL MAMA under new ownership, and now BROADWAY BABY BISTRO disappearing as a separate entity and website, I have no more cabaret venue websites to manage (and no more income from same).
However, I want to express my thanks and gratitude to owner Al Martin for the terrific relationship we've had since December of 2007 when the BISTRO WEBSITE opened. He has been most supportive of our work, and there is a chance that the cabaret portion of the combined club will be advertising on CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE in the future. (One small, but truly appreciative aside: I have never had to wait more that three days for payment of invoices submitted!)

More HERE & THERE items appear at the bottom of this issue - including any last minute news items that come in just before we "go to press" and more comments and commentary on the art and artists of cabaret. Already at the age of 7, Raven O knew his hometown of Oahu, Hawaii was too small for him. He had his sights on the Big Apple. At 18, he entered and won a dance contest with a first place prize being a roundtrip ticket to New York City. He later learned the organizers did not have enough money to cover a return trip. They offered Raven O a one-way ticket and he took it - never looking back. He soon became a fixture in the East Village club world. He sung in dark, seedy underground cabarets and burlesque theatre houses. His notoriety grew when he began touring with Sylvain Sylvain of The New York Dolls. Cirque Du Soleil was a major turning point for the performer. After being recommended by his best friend Joey Arias, the troupe invited Raven O to host their Zumanity show in Las Vegas. In 2007, after three long years in Las Vegas, Raven O returned to his love - New York City - to host Andre Balaz's 50th birthday party. Simon Hammerstein, grandson of Oscar Hammerstein, happened to be in the audience and after the show, he invited Raven O to mc his downtown theatre, The Box. Raven O is currently preparing to release his first musical cd this summer. He will preview the album this spring with a special pre-release of "Heaven", a cover of the classic Psychedelic Furs song. MORE "HERE & THERE" PART II
I've had some strange internet problems for the past few days. On Tuesday, I discovered that I was not receiving e-mails at the svhamstra.com (same as cabarethotlineonline.com) address. I have yahoo, google and me.com e-mail service, and those three were operating normally. I only discovered this because I often send e-mail from my iPod touch, in which case I always send a BCC to myself which can be stored on my desktop iMac. But after 3:30 pm, incoming mail stopped (I could still send mail).
The problem wasn't resolved by my ISP until about 12 hours later - around 3:20 am, when the floodgates opened and 997 e-mails rolled in at once! Of course, 90% were spam or garbage, but it took me the greater part of Wednesday morning to sort things out. And then, last night the same thing - after about 8:30 pm incoming mail ceased until about 3:00 am this morning. Very frustrating.
A big thank you to Tennie Leonard who joined as a sponsor of this year's MARCH IS CABARET MONTH promotion this week. We are no longer soliciting additional sponsors, but if you would like to support us, we are still accepting sponsorship donations. Or, you can order an ad in the program booklet for the show - details on a "click through" link on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website: http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/ .

With this issue we have included (with a few exceptions - see above) all news items for appropriate events through February 24th, for which actual press releases were received. Also included are a few shows which are running ads on the website, which appear in every issue. If your news event is before that date and hasn't been included in this newsletter or previous newsletters, it just might be that we didn't receive complete information, or, even worse, only received a flier or a website link. We need the information in a format that we can "cut & paste" for use in the newsletter and on the website. This not only saves a lot of retyping, it also means fewer errors (especially miss-spelled names and garbled phone numbers). A FLIER IS NOT A PRESS RELEASE (and please, no PDF files - txt or doc releases only).
You can see all the events that have already appeared in previous newsletters on the website in the DIARY/DATEBOOK section (click on the button at the top of every page so labeled). Look for more news on the blog (http://cabarethotlineonline.blogspot.com/ ) and follow CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE on TWITTER (http://twitter.com/cabarethotline ).
Take a few minutes today to do one special thing to promote cabaret. It's quick, simple, and costs nothing. Every e-mail program I know of has a "signature" preference. If you could just put the words "MARCH IS CABARET MONTH" as part of your signature for the next 10 weeks, through March 31st, every piece of mail you send will cause folks to think about cabaret - it might even cause some to write back to you to ask what it means, giving you an opportunity to "proselytize" for cabaret. Let's take back the word CABARET!
And that's just about the way it was. I still have a lot more to tell you about, but we filled our "3-week ahead" news goal and filled our word-count quota, so this issue is going out a little early. More in Monday's issue. Special MEMBERS ONLY issue goes out on Saturday.
Thanks for your support of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE! Now, more than ever, we need your continued support.
