HERE & THERE - PART I

Didn't order your tickets yet to the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE MARCH IS CABARET MONTH GALA on March 2nd? Better hurry, since with today's announcement (above) of added performers for the show, we expect a quick sell-out! We do not expect to have any free tickets to distribute for this event.

Over the weekend I received 6 or 7 more Valentine's Day show announcements, and nearly every one requires a major rewrite to get into the newsletter, which I don't have enough time to do this morning (or space in this issue). Since Valentine's Day is less than a week away, I will add what I can to the website first over the next 2 days, and include the items in Thursday's newsletter. I also received a pack of West Coast February news items, all in one bundle, that need additional information (venue/cover stuff) - so we'll include them in the next few issues as well.

I sort have been running out of news items for the next 3 weeks anyway, since the March schedules from the clubs won't arrive until after the 15th or later. And suddenly, for reasons unknown, there have been no press releases from THE RRAZZ ROOM in San Francisco - they have been so great at sending me information about upcoming shows, I am really disappointed.

In that connection, I can always tell when a publicist is not really reading the newsletter or checking the website when they send merely a jpg of a flier or a website link instead of a true press release. Regular readers must be a little bored by now with my mantra: A Flier is Not A Press Release, but if you saw the multitude of show announcements that come in only in that format, you will realize my frustrations. I want to cover and promote as many cabaret shows and events as possible, and when I have to toss out these announcements I truly feel bad. And I am not a member of Face Book, nor a member of MAC, so if you only send out your show information by those channels, I will miss them as well, unless someone forwards them to me.

So, once again: We need your show information in a format that we can "edit, cut & paste" for use in the newsletter and on the website. This not only saves a lot of retyping, it also means fewer errors (especially miss-spelled names and garbled phone numbers). A FLIER IS NOT A PRESS RELEASE and neither is a website link (and please, no PDF files - txt or doc releases only).

If you've been looking fror a venue in which to produce your show that seats up to 200, this is just the place! Check it out.

MAC (Manhattan Association of Cabarets ) has posted the preliminary 2010 MAC AWARD PRELIMINARY BALLOT on their website - if you have submitted yourself to appear on this ballot, be sure to check to make sure your information is correct. The actual ballot will be mailed to members for the first vote to determine the actual final ballot.

More HERE & THERE items appear at the bottom of this issue - including any last minute news items that come in just before we "go to press" and more comments and commentary on the art and artists of cabaret. And even more news can be found on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE BLOG

NYC: RAVEN O SPENDS ONE NIGHT WITH YOU

Raven O will performs his one-man show, One Night With You - an autobiographical look at his life in story and song - at THE BLEEKER STREET THEATER (45 Bleecker Street, NYC - TKTS: http://www.telecharge.com/ ) on Tuesdays, February 23rd & March 2nd at 8:00 pm. Known worldwide for his starring role in Cirque Du Soleil's Zumanity, Raven O is a master at captivating audiences. On stage, he is the son of the devil one minute, a soul wrenching swan singer the next. His performances are fearless, provocative and often times off-the-wall. Already at the age of 7, Raven O knew his hometown of Oahu, Hawaii was too small for him. He had his sights on the Big Apple. At 18, he entered and won a dance contest with a first place prize being a roundtrip ticket to New York City. He later learned the organizers did not have enough money to cover a return trip. They offered Raven O a one-way ticket and he took it - never looking back. He soon became a fixture in the East Village club world. He sung in dark, seedy underground cabarets and burlesque theatre houses. His notoriety grew when he began touring with Sylvain Sylvain of The New York Dolls. Cirque Du Soleil was a major turning point for the performer. After being recommended by his best friend Joey Arias, the troupe invited Raven O to host their Zumanity show in Las Vegas. In 2007, after three long years in Las Vegas, Raven O returned to his love - New York City - to host Andre Balaz's 50th birthday party. Simon Hammerstein, grandson of Oscar Hammerstein, happened to be in the audience and after the show, he invited Raven O to mc his downtown theatre, The Box. Raven O is currently preparing to release his first musical cd this summer. He will preview the album this spring with a special pre-release of "Heaven", a cover of the classic Psychedelic Furs song. Tickets are $21.50 - group rates available.

MORE "HERE & THERE" PART II

We "dodged the bullet" this week, when a major snowstorm threatened but stayed to the south of NYC - all we had was a light dusting. Cabaret fan Carole Ohlbaum, down in Maryland, was not so lucky - she wrote me Sunday that her town was hit with over 30 inches of snow in less than 48 hours. She's been trying for three weekends to get to NYC for cabaret and was kept home by bad weather each time.

I went grocery shopping right after the Thursday issue was sent out to stock up for what the weather folks said would be the "blizzard of 2010" and apparently other folks had the same idea. Usually I can get through the checkout line in about 5 minutes, but Thursday the line was so long it took close to 20. Pet peeve: people ahead of me who just before it's their turn, remember something at the other end of the store they forgot to purchase and leave their cart in the line and hold everything up (to "skip" the line is a major social faux pas in my neighborhood, which you will be reminded of in at least three languages if you try it).

I had plans for cabaret (even a reservation) on Friday night, and actually went to the corner to wait for a bus. I had just missed one (the bus was early, I wasn't late) and the next one would be in half an hour. Meantime the temperature had dropped to 25 degrees (f) and the wind off the river (just 1 block away) began to kick up. After 10 minutes of "wind chill" I retreated back to the apartment. On Sunday, Daniel dropped by with the one item of winter clothing I lacked: a scarf. This should be a big help.

Winter in NYC is always at its strongest in February, and right on cue, another big storm is expected for Wednesday this week.

A new cabaret in Queens? Could be. So far it's just a whisper and a dream, but the dreamer is an old hand at cabaret who lives in Queens, and has found a perfect venue. Stay tuned.

With this issue we have included (with a few exceptions - see above) all news items for appropriate events through February 28th, for which actual press releases were received. Also included are a few shows which are running ads on the website, which appear in every issue. If your news event is before that date and hasn't been included in this newsletter or previous newsletters, it just might be that we didn't receive complete information, or, even worse, only received a flier or a website link. We need your event information in a format that we can "edit, cut & paste" for use in the newsletter and on the website. This not only saves a lot of retyping, it also means fewer errors (especially miss-spelled names and garbled phone numbers). A FLIER IS NOT A PRESS RELEASE (and please, no PDF files - txt or doc releases only).

You can see all the events that have already appeared in previous newsletters on the website in the DIARY/DATEBOOK section (click on the button at the top of every page so labeled). Look for more news on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE BLOG and follow CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE on TWITTER.

Take a few minutes today to do one special thing to promote cabaret. It's quick, simple, and costs nothing. Every e-mail program I know of has a "signature" preference. If you could just put the words "MARCH IS CABARET MONTH" as part of your signature for the next 10 weeks, through March 31st, every piece of mail you send will cause folks to think about cabaret - it might even cause some to write back to you to ask what it means, giving you an opportunity to "proselytize" for cabaret. Let's take back the word CABARET!

Interested in becoming part of a panel to give me input on a new direction I am hoping to take CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE? Drop me a line. It can all be done by e-mail.

And that's just about the way it was. I still have a lot more to tell you about. More in Thursdays's issue.

Thanks for your support of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE! Now, more than ever, we need your continued support.
