Since 1990 Your First, Best, and Only Complete Source of Cabaret
News
If it's anything to do
with cabaret, you'll probably read it here first!
Baby, it's cold outside!
Here in NYC the temperature has not been above freezing (32f) since
January 13th - and last night set a record for cold temperatures for
this date at around 7 degrees (f). The windows of the apartment are
covered with frost each morning. There doesn't seem to be a break
in the cold snap until Sunday, when it looks like we will break into
the low 30s. Current temperature (2:30 pm) is 19 degrees, and it is
expected to drop to 10 degrees tonight. More personal stuff at the
bottom of the newsletter.
Once again I must remind
everyone that my mailing address for the past two years has been 676A
Ninth Avenue #120, New York, NY 10036. Folks continue to send mail
to my old address, and I understand that mail will be returned after
the end of January rather than forwarded. I actually received a Christmas
card the other day, mailed on December 16th to the old address and
forwarded - taking over a month to reach me! Please double check your
mailing lists and make this change. Also, when sending a check, please
make it payable simply to Stu Hamstra.
Many of those folks who
had planned to run an ad in the February issue of CABARET SCENES MAGAZINE,
only to discover that, due to a financial reorganization, they were
skipping that issue, have been turning to CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE to
advertise their shows. Thus we have only a few BANNER AD spaces left
on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website for the rest of January, and
slots are selling out quickly for February and March. Note that we
limit the ads to 20 banners per week, so if you plan to order a banner,
reserve your banner space as soon as possible.
For information on banner
ads, check out the banner information page on the CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/BannerHere.shtml),
or simply send me a note at banners@svhamstra.com
with the single word "Banner" in the subject line and I'll send all
the details. You can even pay for your banner by credit card via PayPal
- http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/PayPalPayment.shtml
and get a discount, if the total cost of the run is over $100. For
example, a 3-week ad, paid for by credit card, would cost less than
$35 per week! And a 4-week ad, by this method, would cost just $33.35
per week.
CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
is totally dependant on Banner Advertising and Membership Donations
to keep providing you will all the news from the world of cabaret
each week. If you appreciate what we are doing, and would like to
see CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE not just continue, but also grow, please
consider becoming a member this week. For information on becoming
a contributing member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, check at http://svhamstra.com/Membership.shtml
or else just send me a note at membership@svhamstra.com
with the single word "membership" in the subject line, and I'll send
all the details. You can even send your donation by credit card via
PayPal - http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/PayPalPayment.shtml
Please don't miss out
on another feature of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/)
- the MESSAGE BOARD - where anyone, anywhere, can post information
about their shows, CDs or other cabaret-related event. You can also
post requests and questions about cabaret performance, and share your
thoughts and ideas of cabaret. You don't have to be a member of CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE, you don't have to fill out a form. All you need to
do is follow the rules - clearly posted on the board. I will remove
your message if I deem it inappropriate. Fully 70% of visitors to
the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website visit the MESSAGE BOARD. Currently,
the MESSAGE BOARD is sponsored by Gregory Kennell Designer Productions,
but up to now we have not offered this opportunity to others. If you
would like information on sponsoring this MESSAGE BOARD section, where
your banner would be displayed exclusively, drop me a line. The costs,
naturally, are higher than for the regular banner ads, and you must
contract for a 6-week period (you can change your banner during the
period, but you are not permitted to "sub-contract" this space). The
MESSAGE BOARD sponsorship is available, starting on February 1, 2003.

DON'T OVERLOOK THIS OPPORTUNITY
TO PROMOTE YOUR WEBSITE!
Cabaret performers can
also request a link to their website on the Performers Links pages
on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website - you don't need to be a member.
You should check this section just to make sure your name is listed
and properly linked. See http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/CabaretLinksIndex.shtml
While there, see if there
is another category on the page that you should be linked through
as well - Songwriter, Director, Videographer, etc. You do not have
to be a member to have a link on these pages. Please tell your friends
about this section of the website - eventually we hope it will become
sort of a "Cabaret Yellow Pages" section where you can find hundreds
of resources in putting together your show or recording your CD.
LOOKING FOR PRESS COVERAGE
FOR YOUR EVENT?
I get e-mails, time and
time again, from performers bemoaning the fact that the major publications
do not seem to cover cabaret, or seem to only cover events that take
out expensive advertisements. Well, folks in the NYC area have an
opportunity to show writers and editors of the major publications
that cabaret, jazz and comedy are vital to the NYC entertainment scene,
and worthy of more extensive coverage. If you live in the greater
NYC area, or will be visiting here next week Monday, here is a show
that needs - and deserves - your support.

How do you get an item
posted in the BREAKING NEWS section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/)?
Just e-mail me a press release of at least four paragraphs, giving
the complete information on your show, CD release or other cabaret
related event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available. But
please send me complete information - and do not merely send a copy
of your flier. By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from
the press releases I receive before using the item on my website or
in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the four
or more paragraphs.

Last week I had an experience
that made me restudy my cabaret habits, and have come to the decision
that I will avoid shows to which I have not been specifically invited.
I made a reservation to attend a show that I saw on a club schedule,
figuring it was a regular cabaret show. But when I arrived, I discovered
that it was actually a private affair, part of a showcase for producers.
It was like attending a wedding where you knew neither the bride or
the groom - very uncomfortable. Plus, so many folks were invited,
they forgot to save me a seat (the affair started about an hour before
the scheduled show), and I was squeezed into a table where others
were already seated, and I could sense their discomfort as well. I
decided to skip the show - which was already delayed, and will try
to catch this performer at a later date.
I have pretty much settled
into the routines of non-Manhattan living - and loving every minute
of it except the time spent between subway and bus - the cold weather
and high winds have been brutal. I now carefully study bus and subway
schedules to minimize the waiting time, and have found several "safe
houses," including an ATM space on Steinway Street, to keep warm in
while waiting for the bus. I cannot wait for warmer weather - I can
actually walk from the subway to my apartment, and did it several
times in early November when we were enjoying a warm spell.
I have determined which
grocery stores have the best prices and best selections (not necessarily
the same stores) and have even begun comparing the sale circulars
that arrive on Friday mornings. I also occasionally clip those coupons
that come in the Sunday newspaper, now that I actually have a kitchen
and a refrigerator.
Well, time to send off
this very long letter - and again I had no room for reviews. Instead,
I shall put them up on the website as I write them.
And that is just about
the way it was.
