CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE #030102 - Thursday, January 30, 2003
Since 1990 Your First, Best, and Only Complete Source of Cabaret News

If it's anything to do with cabaret, you'll probably read it here first!

The FIRST ANNUAL NY NIGHTLIFE AWARDS were held on Monday night, the 27th of January, and while the acts presented were warmly received by the audience at THE TOWN HALL (123 West 43rd Street, NYC - http://www.the-townhall-nyc.org/), the temperatures outside were in the single digits, and the short walk after the show to the post-event party at the Secret Garden of Trattoria Dopo Teatro chilled me to the bone. I made it to the show even while recovering from a nasty cold which has limited my cabaret-going activities for the past several days. I will have a complete report about the show and party on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/) shortly. Currently, the list of winners, announced at the show, is already on the website.

Actually, I will also be posting my own choices for the top-20 cabaret shows I saw in 2002 in a few days as well. This article has been delayed because I ended up with 23 choices, and it has been very frustrating choosing which three events to drop. I may just have to add two and make it 25!

Meantime, the daily temperatures have been slowly climbing, and by next week we should be back in the mid-40s.

We were all stunned this week to be informed that veteran radio broadcaster Stan Martin, 64, passed away Tuesday morning, January 28th at Lenox Hill Hospital from complications following a stroke. A Memorial Service for Stan Martin will be held on Friday, January 31st at 11:00 am at:

Plaza Memorial Chapel
630 Amsterdam Ave.
(On the West side of Amsterdam Ave., between 90th-91st Street)
New York, New York

212-769-4400

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the ALS Association of Greater New York (116 John Street, NYC, NY 10038) or the Boys & Girls Republic (formerly the Boys Brotherhood Republic - at 888 East 6th Street, NYC, NY 10009).

There is a more complete story, with photo, in the "Breaking News" section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/).

This Sunday, February 2nd from 9:00 to 11:00 pm (ET), on EVERYTHING OLD IS NEW AGAIN, on the Radio over WBAI 99.5 FM and on the Internet at http://www.2600.com/offthehook/hot2.ram, host David Kenney will present his Annual Birthday Broadcast called "My All-Time Favorite Songs." Then, on Sunday, February 9th, David will present "A Birthday Tribute to Hildegarde!" You are invited to email your comments and suggestions to David Kenney at: oldisnew@earthlink.net.

Last Sunday I went to REGENTS (317 East 53rd Street, NYC - 212-593-3091) for another of their delightful Sunday brunch shows, and saw an old pal Mr. Ruby Rims perform - he was filling in for Aaron Lee Battle who had to fly to California for a family emergency. Host/manager showed me the new upstairs cabaret room, which is nearly completed for opening on February 10th. Initial plans call for cabaret on Mondays and Tuesdays, and the first act will be that lovely team of Kelly Briggs and Jerry Christakos in "Lovely" - one of the winners of the NYC Nightlife Awards. The area around REGENTS was once a lively center for nightlife, but a number of new office and apartment buildings built in recent years has changed the neighborhood completely. It is great to see live entertainment returning to the area.

2002 BISTRO WINNER (Singer/Songwriter) D.C. Anderson is bringing cabaret to new venues in the Midwest. On Saturday, February 1st, THE CREOLE GALLERY (1218 Turner Street, East Lansing, MI - 517-487-9549 - http://www.creolegallery.com) will present D.C. with musical director David Robison at 11:15 pm, following his performance as Andre in THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA at the nearby Wharton Center. Cover charge is $ 13.00 with no minimums.

Then on Friday, February 14th and Saturday, February 15th, D.C. with musical director Rick Snyder, will open the Apollo Professional Theater's First "Cabaret Series" at 8:00 pm at the APOLLO FINE ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT CENTRE (311 Main Street, Peoria, IL - 309-673-4343). Tickets are $30.

For more information about the above concerts or his recently released songbook (available at Colony Music in NYC and Hollywood Sheet Music in Los Angeles as well as at http://www.LMLMusic.com/) or CD's visit http://www.dcanderson.net/.

REMINDER: We have only a few BANNER AD spaces left on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website for February, and slots are selling out quickly for March. Note that we limit the ads to 20 banners per week, so if you plan to order a banner, reserve your banner space as soon as possible.

For information on banner ads, check out the banner information page on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/BannerHere.shtml), or simply send me a note at banners@svhamstra.com with the single word "Banner" in the subject line and I'll send all the details.

March is known as CABARET MONTH in many parts of the country and even the world - originally started by MAC (Manhattan Association of Cabarets & Clubs) to promote cabaret attendance in what was normally a slow month in the clubs. CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE wants to promote CABARET MONTH shows and activities anywhere, so send in you special press releases for inclusion on the website and also in the newsletter.

Here in NYC, CABARET MONTH is normally "book ended" by the BACK STAGE Bistro Awards at the beginning of March, and the Annual MAC Awards at the end of the month. Look to CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE to keep you informed of these two special events, as well as other CABARET MONTH events wherever they happen.

Please don't miss out on another feature of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/) - the MESSAGE BOARD - where anyone, anywhere, can post information about their shows, CDs or other cabaret-related event. You can also post requests and questions about cabaret performance, and share your thoughts and ideas of cabaret. You don't have to be a member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, you don't have to fill out a form. All you need to do is follow the rules - clearly posted on the board. I will remove your message if I deem it inappropriate. Fully 70% of visitors to the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/) visit the MESSAGE BOARD. The MESSAGE BOARD sponsorship is available so please write for details.

We pass along this note at the request of the mother of singer/songwriter/pianist Laine Edwards, who passed away suddenly last year of complications of HIV:

Hi Stu.

I want to thank you for keeping Laine's site on the web sight. I am still receiving emails and cards from people who knew Laine. It has really been a blessing to myself and Laine's brothers. Please if you have a chance, let people know that it has been so deeply appreciated. So many of the people with AIDS are left to themselves. Laine was loved by us and so many other people. I count my self as a privilege Mom to have had Laine as a son.

Again thank you and I read your newsletter every time it comes. I also love Cabaret.

Nancy Edwards (Laine's Mom )

DON'T OVERLOOK THIS OPPORTUNITY TO PROMOTE YOUR WEBSITE!

Cabaret performers can also request a link to their website on the Performers Links pages on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website - you don't need to be a member. You should check this section just to make sure your name is listed and properly linked. See http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/CabaretLinksIndex.shtml

While there, see if there is another category on the page that you should be linked through as well - Songwriter, Director, Videographer, etc. You do not have to be a member to have a link on these pages. Please tell your friends about this section of the website - eventually we hope it will become sort of a "Cabaret Yellow Pages" section where you can find hundreds of resources in putting together your show or recording your CD.

There is a $10 cover for the show which is being waived for all MAC members and their guests (using the Discount Code MAC). There is a 2-drink minimum. There is a more complete story, with photo, in the "Breaking News" section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/).

How do you get an item posted in the BREAKING NEWS section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/)? Just e-mail me a press release of at least four paragraphs, giving the complete information on your show, CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available. But please send me complete information - and do not merely send a copy of your flier. By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from the press releases I receive before using the item on my website or in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the four or more paragraphs.

Here's another reason to be a member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE: All members have the opportunity to have their CDs available for sale via the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website. SILVER MEMBERS can display one CD on their page, GOLD MEMBERS and above can display up to four CDs (additional CDs - GOLD or above members only - can be added, if requested, at $15 each). The CD FOR SALE listing includes a special page under your name, displaying your CD cover(s) and a link to a website of your choice where the CD may be purchased. You can link to your own website, or to LML Music, CD Baby, Amazon, or some other site. This benefit is by request, so if you already are a member, please let me know if you wish to be linked in this section of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE - see http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/MemberCDSales2002.shtml. If your CD FOR SALE page is already posted, please check to see if the link is correct and if it is working properly. I need a copy of your CD or a jpg scan of the CD cover in order to build the page.
