Since 1990 Your First, Best, and Only Complete Source of Cabaret
News
If it's anything to do
with cabaret, you'll probably read it here first!
I'm afraid that the events
of the past week have sort of thrown me for a loop. I was busy working
on the website on Saturday morning, with FOX NEWS on TV in the background,
when the news of the shuttle disaster began coming in. I remained
glued to the TV the rest of the day. And it sort of set my tone for
the week. Thankfully, I had an opportunity to see some fantastic cabaret
shows over the past few days, and now I'm set to get back "in the
groove."
It's times like this we
need cabaret!
MORE SAD NEWS: Jack Young,
husband of Gaylen English - super waiter at JUDY'S CHELSEA - passed
away last week Tuesday, January 26th. Jack had not been in good health
for several years. I first met Jack when he was working at a magic
club in the Village - long closed (the name escapes me). He was a
talented magician, videographer and computer wizard - he could make
the Atari Computer (also long gone) do tricks it was never intended
to do, and Jack and I often had discussions (and polite arguments)
about the respective attributes of the Apple and Atari computers.
Jack was also the co-manager of The Five Oaks in the early 90s and
I am told also worked in Las Vegas showrooms before that. A memorial
party will be held today, Thursday, February 6th, at the EMERALD PUB
(308 Spring Street - just west of Hudson Street, NYC - 1-212-226-8512)
from 4:00 pm till midnight. This was Jack's favorite spot and Gaylen
would be most happy to see you who remember Jack.
I know that this must
be a financial hardship to Gaylen, so if you would like to send a
gift, just send your donation, payable to Gaylen English, c/o JUDY'S
CHELSEA (169 Eighth Avenue, NYC - 1-212-929-5410 - http://www.judyschelsea.com/).
Just a note to folks who
may think their shows and performances are overlooked here and on
the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/).
Several clubs do not send me their schedules, and so I depend on the
performers to send me information. I do check the websites of DAVENPORT'S,
LIBBY'S and a few other out-of-town clubs for their information, but
several - notably THE TRIAD and WEST BANK here in NYC, and THE GARDENIA
in LA do not have websites, and never send me a schedule.
This Sunday, February
2nd from 9:00 to 11:00 pm (ET), on EVERYTHING OLD IS NEW AGAIN, on
the Radio over WBAI 99.5 FM and on the Internet at http://www.2600.com/offthehook/hot2.ram,
host David Kenney will present a Birthday Tribute to Hildegarde! Some
of the songs from her career that David will play are: "I'm Feeling
Like A Million" - "The Last Time I Saw Paris (Jerome Kern/Oscar Hammerstein
II) - Gladys Shelley's "How Did He Look" (recorded live at Carnegie
Hall, 1986) and of course, her signature song "Darling, Je Vous Aime
Beaucoup" and More!
Hildegarde celebrated
her "97th" Birthday on February 1st. You can mail your Birthday Wishes
to:
Hildegarde
c/o Mary Manning Walsh Nursing Home
1339 York Avenue
New York, NY 10021
You are invited to email
your comments and suggestions to David Kenney at: oldisnew@earthlink.net.
I am so happy that my
pal Wayman Wong, who has a day job at THE DAILY NEWS, is writing about
the music scene again. For several years he covered cabaret at THE
NEWS with insightful articles and reviews. Wayman Wong's February
column of "The Leading Men," which is devoted to the male musical
stars of both Broadway and cabaret, is up at Playbill.com. He features
John Selya from "Movin' Out," Stephen Buntrock from "Oklahoma!" and
cabaret's Johnny Rodgers. Plus there are tidbits about upcoming cabaret
shows and CDs. Check it out at http://www.playbill.com/celebritybuzz/article/77635.html.
REMINDER: We have only
a few BANNER AD spaces left on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website
for the rest of February, and slots are selling out quickly for March
(CABARET MONTH). Note that we limit the ads to 20 banners per week,
so if you plan to order a banner, reserve your banner space as soon
as possible.
For information on banner
ads, check out the banner information page on the CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/BannerHere.shtml),
or simply send me a note at banners@svhamstra.com
with the single word "Banner" in the subject line and I'll send all
the details.
I took a short break from
the difficult task of writing a review of the 4-hour-long First Annual
NYC Nightlife Awards. But meantime, Scott Siegel is not taking a break
from his producing projects. The 2003 season of "Broadway by the Year"
at THE TOWN HALL (123 West 43rd Street, NYC - http://www.the-townhall-nyc.org/)
is ready to roll for 2003. This critically acclaimed series returns
with four shows beginning Monday, February 17th. The first will celebrate
"The Broadway Musicals of 1925." The show will highlight the seminal
songs of Rodgers & Hart, Kern, Harbach & Hammerstein, The Gershwins,
and every Irving from Berlin to Caesar.
Incidentally, the CD of
"Broadway Musicals of 1964," created, hosted and written by Scott
Siegel, has just been released. Recorded live before a sell-out audience
last June at Town Hall, it features Tom Andersen, Steven Brinberg,
Liz Callaway, Barbara Fasano, Alix Korey, Sharon McNight, Craig Rubano
and Richard Skipper, with musical direction by Ross Patterson. Produced
by Peter Pinne, the CD includes songs from "Anyone Can Whistle," "Fiddler
on the Roof," "Funny Girl," "Hello, Dolly!" and many more. At Footlight.com,
it's already ranked No. 2 among its "Top Sellers." For more info,
see http://www.bayviewrecords.com/.
March is known as CABARET
MONTH in many parts of the country and even the world - originally
started by MAC (Manhattan Association of Cabarets & Clubs) to promote
cabaret attendance in what was normally a slow month in the clubs.
CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE wants to promote CABARET MONTH shows and activities
anywhere, so send in you special press releases for inclusion on the
website and also in the newsletter.
Here in NYC, CABARET MONTH
is normally "book ended" by the BACK STAGE Bistro Awards at the beginning
of March, and the Annual MAC Awards at the end of the month. Look
to CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE to keep you informed of these two special
events, as well as other CABARET MONTH events wherever they happen.
By the way, the MAC tentative
preliminary ballot (there may be some changes before it is formally
mailed out) is posted on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/).
This list is made up of all the performers who have decided to place
their names in nomination. It will be voted on by members of MAC (Manhattan
Association of Cabarets & Clubs - http://www.macnyc.com/),
and then the final ballot - pruned to about three names in each category
- will be mailed out to the members.
The 18th Annual MAC Awards
show will be held at SYMPHONY SPACE (Broadway at 95th Street - 212-864-1414)
on Monday, April 14th at 7:30 pm. No word on the BACK STAGE Bistro
Awards date, which is usually announced about this time of year.
Seth Rudetsky's guests
on tonight's BROADWAY CHATTERBOX at 6:00 pm at DON'T TELL MAMA (343
West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/)
are Jodi Long & Jose Llana, cast members of FLOWER DRUM SONG. My friends,
if you have any interest in musical theater, you should be attending
these interview shows every week. I rarely have time, opportunity
or finances to attend Broadway shows, but I have learned more about
Broadway from these interviews than going to 100 Broadway shows a
year! Cost is a $10 and 2-drink minimum. Best of all, all proceeds
go to BROADWAY CARES/EQUITY FIGHTS AIDS (http://www.bcefa.org/)!
For details, see: http://www.geocities.com/broadwaychatterbox/.
Debbie Lasser will be
bringing her "Let's Misbehave" show to PIZZA ON THE PARK (11 Knightsbridge,
Hyde Park Corner, London - 020-7235-5273) on Wednesday and Thursday,
February 19th & 20th, with two shows each night at 9:15 and 10:45
pm. Musical director is David Brunetti. This is Debbie's London debut
- I saw the show last year at JUDY'S CHELSEA (169 Eighth Avenue, NYC
- 1-212-929-5410 - http://www.judyschelsea.com/)
and found it to be clever fun - and Ms. Lasser's vocals are a delight.
My UK friends will enjoy it, I'm sure.
I doubt that this is part
of any cultural exchange program, but here in NYC we are sort of having
an "English Invasion" at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC
- 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/)!
Look at this lineup:
Handsome pianist/vocalist
Nathan Martin returns with his show "So Far," with performances on
Monday and Tuesday, February 24th & 25th at 6:00 pm.
Then Nathan serves as
musical director to Jessica Martin with her show "Where Was I?" on
Sunday the 23rd at 9:00 pm and Monday, the 24th at 10:00 pm.
Another fantastic UK entertainer,
Morag McLaren returns, with shows on Friday, February 21st at 5:00
pm, Wednesday the 26th at 8:30 pm, Thursday the 27th at 10:00 pm and
Friday the 28th at 5:00 pm. We saw this lady when she performed alongside
Georga Osborn late last year and I will tell you Ms. McLaren is a
super-talent, wild, funny and a great vocalist. Don't miss her!
Sue Casson also returns
with The Brannick Academy with her show "The English In Love" with
performances on Saturday & Sunday, February 8th & 9th at 5:00 pm and
Sunday, February 10th at 6:00 pm.
Finally (unless I missed
something) Lindsay Hamilton is back, with the aforementioned Nathan
Martin as musical director, on Sunday, February 23rd at 5:00 pm and
Tuesday the 25th at 8:00 pm.
All the above are considered
top cabaret performers in the UK, and you owe it to yourself to sample
what the Brits are doing by getting to at least a few of these shows.
SPECIAL NOTE about DON'T
TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/):
They are strictly enforcing the reservation list limits - you should
make sure you have a reservation before heading to the club. Those
without reservations may be turned away.
Please don't miss out
on another feature of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/)
- the MESSAGE BOARD - where anyone, anywhere, can post information
about their shows, CDs or other cabaret-related event. You can also
post requests and questions about cabaret performance, and share your

The Foundation has graciously
provided press tickets to the shows to our Chicago correspondent/reviewer
Todd Shuman, so look here for "gavel to gavel" coverage of this event.
SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT:
I just booked a round-trip on AMTRAK to Chicago to attend the Sunday
show - couldn't afford air travel. I will be leaving on Saturday,
the 15th arriving in Chicago on Sunday morning. I return by AMTRAK
on Monday evening and get back to NYC on Tuesday, the 18th. I will
be traveling with my amazing little MAC iBook and the hotel room has
an internet hookup, so I'll be able to send out any special late-breaking
news from there. As you can see, I will have all day Sunday and all
day Monday to explore the Windy City. I don't have word from THE MABEL
MERCER FOUNDATION (160 East 48th Street - #14U, NYC - 1-212-980-3026
- http://www.mabelmercer.org/)
about a press ticket for me for this show, but I will re-send my request
today.
Award-winning vocalist
Lisa Asher will be appearing in Chicago at DAVENPORT'S Piano Bar &
Cabaret (1383 North Milwaukee Avenue, Chicago, IL - 773-278-1830 -
http://www.davenportspianobar.com/)
for one show only, along with her award-winning musical director Jeff
Waxman on Sunday, February 16th at 3:00 pm, in conjunction with her
appearance at the CHICAGO CABARET CONVENTION. There is a $15 cover,
2-drink minimum. I hope to make it to this show - Lisa, wherever you
are, save me a seat!
I won't be able to make
it to Craig Rubano's show on Saturday night, September 15th at 11:00
pm, also at DAVENPORT'S. Craig will be there with his musical director
Alex Rybeck on piano in "FINISHING THE ACT: Act One Finales from Broadway."
This show won both the 2002 Back Stage Bistro Award for Outstanding
Vocalist and the 2002 MAC Award for Outstanding Vocalist. The CD based
on this show also won the 2001 MAC Award for Outstanding Recording.
There is a $20 cover, 2-drink minimum. I urge you Chicago folks to
stay up late to catch this one after the Convention performance.
The Mabel Mercer Foundation
will also produce the First-ever Palm Springs Cabaret Convention,
featuring 50 cabaret artists, on Friday through Sunday, March 7th,
8th & 9th at the ANNENBERG THEATER (101 Museum Drive, Palm Springs,
CA - 760-325-4490 - http://www.psmuseum.org/).
Tickets are $40.00 each. For each of the three nights, 12 to 14 gifted
performers will be singing the great American Songbook. Music by Cole
Porter, Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Stephen Sondheim, Jerry Herman,
Rodgers and Hart and newer songwriters of today, Amanda McBroom, Maury
Yeston, Ann Hampton Callaway, and John Bucchino. There is a more complete
story, with a list of scheduled performers for all shows, in the "Breaking
News" section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/).
If I am able to procure press seats for this event, I just might use
up some of my "frequent flier" miles to get to Palm Springs.
DON'T OVERLOOK THIS OPPORTUNITY
TO PROMOTE YOUR WEBSITE!
Cabaret performers can
also request a link to their website on the Performers Links pages
on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website - you don't need to be a member.
You should check this section just to make sure your name is listed
and properly linked. See http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/CabaretLinksIndex.shtml
While there, see if there
is another category on the page that you should be linked through
as well - Songwriter, Director, Videographer, etc. You do not have
to be a member to have a link on these pages. Please tell your friends
about this section of the website - eventually we hope it will become
sort of a "Cabaret Yellow Pages" section where you can find hundreds
of resources in putting together your show or recording your CD.
Remember, you need a website
to be linked. An e-mail address is not sufficient.
Here's another great entertainment
series in progress. Stefi Sanev, in association with Elegant Diamond
Productions, presents "Carol's Cabaret Cavalcade," at THE TRIAD (158
West 72nd Street, NYC - 212-787-7921). The show is hosted by "Carol
Channing" (aka Richard Skipper), who has assembled some of the brightest,
and most talented New York Cabaret artists as guests. Shows will take
place every Tuesday in February. Michael Lavine is musical director.
There is a $20 cover and 2-drink minimum. Light food may be available,
but does not apply to the minimum. Next Tuesday, February 11th, is
"Carol's" 42nd birthday bash for Richard, featuring Glen Charlow,
Joan Crowe, Gerta Grunen, Sue Matsuki, Georga Osborne and Vickie Phillips.
Information about other
shows around the country and around the world can be found on the
BREAKING NEWS page of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/)
as well as in the LISTINGS section. I have also been adding piano
bar and lounge listings for all areas. New items are added almost
daily!
For those folks who want
to keep their name in front of folks while the MAC (Manhattan Association
of Cabarets & Clubs - http://www.macnyc.com/)
voters make their choices on the preliminary and final ballots, our
web pages are read from 20,000 to 30,000 times per day by cabaret
lovers all over the world. Your ad banner will appear at random on
nearly all 1800+ pages - in full color if you wish - with a link to
your website for no extra charge.
Those running banners
will get mentioned in every issue of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE e-mail
newsletter as long as the banner is running. We have nearly 2,500
subscribers - the most readers of ANY cabaret-only publication (print
or e-mail)! You can even pay for your banner by credit card via PayPal
- http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/PayPalPayment.shtml
and get a discount, if the total cost of the run is over $100. For
example, a 3-week ad, paid for by credit card, would cost less than
$35 per week! And a 4-week ad, by this method, would cost just $33.35
per week.
Your advertising dollars
will help me continue to promote the art of cabaret on the website,
publish the e-mail newsletter, and make visits to various cabaret
events and performances locally and around the country.
AS PROMISED: Each weekly
issue of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE newsletter includes a rundown
of all the banner advertisers on the website - and these items will
be repeated as long as the banner is running. Here is news about the

Singer John De Marco continues
his new show, "It's All About Love" to JUDY'S CHELSEA (169 Eighth
Avenue, NYC - 212-929-5410 - http://www.judyschelsea.com/)
for four Fridays in February. MAC and Bistro Award winning musical
director Daryl Kojak is at the piano with Michael Lauren on percussion
and Sean Conly on bass. Lennie Watts, another MAC and Bistro Award
winner, is the director. Remaining shows are February 7th, 14th, 21st
& 28th, Showtime is 8:30 pm. There is a $15 cover and a $12 food/drink
minimum. I saw this show last week, and I urge you to make a reservation
(if his shows are not sold-out already)! This fellow is not a youngster,
but his vocals are those of a 25-year-old! The theme is romance, and
I recommend taking someone you love along as a date. It should set
the tone for a very romantic evening - stop at the drug store for
supplies before the show - you won't want to take the time afterwards.

Since its opening at DON'T

of his comedy material. The acclaimed show, now entering its third
season, is playing at THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street,
NYC - TICKETS: SmartTix at 1-212-206-1515 or http://www.smarttix.com/)

How do you get an item
posted in the BREAKING NEWS section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/)?
Just e-mail me a press release of at least four paragraphs, giving
the complete information on your show, CD release or other cabaret
related event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available. But
please send me complete information - and do not merely send a copy
of your flier. By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from
the press releases I receive before using the item on my website or
in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the four
or more paragraphs.
