Since 1990 Your First, Best, and Only Complete Source of Cabaret News
If it's anything to do
with cabaret, you'll probably read it here first!
Baby, it's cold outside
- really cold. I am sure that you are a little sick of my complaining
about the weather, but please remember I am unaccustomed to this "suburban"
living thing. Out here in Queens it takes everyone a few days to shovel
their walks, a 5-minute wait at the bus stop can be an adventure in
avoiding frostbite, and now that I actually have something to look
at through my windows, they are covered with a glaze of frost!
Once again I must remind
everyone that my mailing address for the past two years has been,
and continues to be 676A Ninth Avenue #120, New York, NY 10036. Folks
continue to send mail to my old address on West 46th Street. This
week I received a very important press release that was delayed over
three weeks at the post office because the publicist was using the
old address. It arrived two days before the event. Please double check
your mailing lists, and the list your publicist is using, to make
sure this change has been made. Also, when sending a check, please
make it payable simply to Stu Hamstra. I received 2 membership checks
this week which were made out incorrectly and had to be returned.
IT'S NEARLY FINISHED DEPARTMENT
It is nearly complete!
I'm talking about the BEST 25 CABARET SHOWS OF 2002 LIST! I will be
sending out the list to all current members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
tomorrow, and will post the list on the website before I leave for
Chicago on Saturday afternoon. Some of the folks on the list have
shows coming up or currently running, so I have marked a few for you
in this newsletter.
I ASKED FOR IT DEPARTMENT
My e-mailbox has been
suddenly inundated with press releases and listings - so many, I have
not been able to keep up with them! I look forward to the trip by
AMTRAK to Chicago this weekend to straighten everything out. I will
have 17 hours each direction to get things organized on my iBook,
and hopefully when I return, there will be a ton of new items and
stories on the website. Folks are discovering that no one else covers
cabaret in depth the way CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE does. News and information
can be found on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/)
that cannot be found anywhere else.
For example, have you
looked at the "Tips & FAQs" section? If you are planning a show -
or just an audience regular, you can find important information here.
Looking for a song? The songwriter just might be found in the "Other
Links" section. You can find Videographers, Vocal Coaches, and many
other cabaret support resources here as well. Try the Performer Links
to find the web pages of hundreds of cabaret performers all over the
world. If it's about cabaret, you can probably find it on the CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/)!
CABARET TIPS DEPARTMENT
A few weeks ago I was
seated next to someone at a cabaret show who was introduced to me
as the organizer of the next show to open at THE FIREBIRD UPSTAIRS
SUPPER CLUB (363 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-586-0244 - http://www.firebirdrestaurant.com/).
He explained that the show was to be a salute to Bing Crosby. I asked
him if it was the same show that recently played for several weeks
at JOE FRANKLIN'S MEMORY LANE RESTAURANT (Eighth Avenue at West 45th
Street, NYC). He replied that, although he had not heard about that
show, it could not be the same, since his show had not been written
yet. To which I replied that he was fortunate indeed to get a booking
at THE FIREBIRD for a show that had not even been written - something
new in the cabaret business, I believe.
Well, on Tuesday, THE
FIREBIRD announced that the show "BING SINGS WHILST BREGMAN SWINGS,"
celebrating Bing Crosby and featuring legendary arranger Buddy Bregman
which had opened on February 5th, scheduled to run through March 1st
has cancelled remaining performances as of February 11th. The critics
were nearly unanimous in their judgement that the show was disorganized
and sloppily presented. This is a club that wishes to be considered
as an important and major room. Cabaret tip? You can't write a cabaret
show in two weeks. After all, cabaret is not like a jazz gig, where
the song list is often developed "on the fly."
There was no reason given,
but at the same time, FEINSTEIN'S at the Regency Hotel (540 Park Avenue,
NYC - 1-212-339-4095 - http://www.feinsteinsattheregency.com/)
announced that the show "NYC MUSIC ROOTS" starring Marla Gibbs has
been cancelled. The show was scheduled to run from February 18th through
March 1st and was billed as a celebration of Black History Month.
The club will resume performances with the debut engagement of vocalist
Maureen McGovern from Tuesday, March 4th to Saturday, March 15th.
Just another note to folks
who may think their shows and performances are overlooked here and
on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/).
Several clubs do not send me their schedules, and so I depend on the
performers to send me information. I do check the websites of DAVENPORT'S,
LIBBY'S and a few other out-of-town clubs for their information, but
several - notably THE TRIAD and WEST BANK here in NYC, and THE GARDENIA
in LA do not have websites, and never send me a schedule.
This Sunday, February
16th from 9:00 to 11:00 pm (ET), EVERYTHING OLD IS NEW AGAIN, on the
Radio over WBAI 99.5 FM and on the Internet at http://www.2600.com/offthehook/hot2.ram
has been pre-empted for THE GOLDEN AGE OF RADIO On-Air Fundraiser.
Next Sunday night, February 23rd, host David Kenney will present the
EVERYTHING OLD IS NEW AGAIN Fundraiser. Be sure to tune in and pledge
your support! You are invited to email your comments and suggestions
to David Kenney at: oldisnew@earthlink.net.
REMINDER: We have only
a few BANNER AD spaces left on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website
for the rest of February, and slots are selling out quickly for March
(CABARET MONTH). Note that we limit the ads to 20 banners per week,
so if you plan to order a banner, reserve your banner space as soon
as possible.
For information on banner
ads, check out the banner information page on the CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/BannerHere.shtml),
or simply send me a note at banners@svhamstra.com
with the single word "Banner" in the subject line and I'll send all
the details.
MAJOR CABARET RELATED EVENTS
THIS COMING WEEK:
The first show in the
Broadway by the Year season at THE TOWN HALL (123 West 43rd Street,
NYC - http://www.the-townhall-nyc.org/)
takes place this coming Monday, February 17th at 8:00 pm. The first
series offering will be "The Broadway Musicals of 1925." "Broadway
by the Year" is created, written, and hosted by Scott Siegel, who
will offer little factoids such as this: "One of the shows on Broadway
in 1925 was originally called My Fair Lady but the name was changed
because they thought it wouldn't sell." Limited tickets are still
available at $35 at the box office, which is open from 12 noon to
6:00 pm, Monday through Saturday.
The Mabel Mercer Foundation
returns to Chicago for it's second season on Friday through Monday,
February 14th through 17th, with performances at PARK WEST (322 West
Armitage Avenue, Chicago, IL - 773-929-5959 - http://www.parkwestchicago.com/)
with opening night festivals at THE EMPIRE ROOM of the Palmer House
Hilton (17 East Monroe Street, Chicago, IL - 312-421-0202). Tickets
at the PARK WEST performances are $40 for assigned seats and $25 for
general admission. The black-tie opening-night gala celebration limited
to 200 patrons at $100.00 per ticket, limit two tickets per person.
The Foundation has graciously
provided press tickets to the shows to our Chicago correspondent/reviewer
Todd Shuman, so look here for "gavel to gavel" coverage of this event.
I will be leaving on Saturday, the 15th via AMTRAK, arriving in Chicago
on Sunday morning, and will be attending just the Sunday evening show.
I return by AMTRAK on Monday evening and get back to NYC on Tuesday,
the 18th. I too have been graciously provided with a press ticket
to the Sunday night show.
FUTURE MAJOR CABARET RELATED
EVENTS
The Mabel Mercer Foundation
will also produce the First-ever Palm Springs Cabaret Convention,
featuring 50 cabaret artists, on Friday through Sunday, March 7th,
8th & 9th at the ANNENBERG THEATER (101 Museum Drive, Palm Springs,
CA - 760-325-4490 - http://www.psmuseum.org/).
Tickets are $40.00 each. For each of the three nights, 12 to 14 gifted
performers will be singing the great American Songbook. Music by Cole
Porter, Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Stephen Sondheim, Jerry Herman,
Rodgers and Hart and newer songwriters of today, Amanda McBroom, Maury
Yeston, Ann Hampton Callaway, and John Bucchino.
The Mabel Mercer Foundation
has informed me that there are no press tickets available to the Palm
Springs Convention through their office - the distribution of tickets
is being handled entirely by the ANNENBERG THEATER folks, and apparently
they are not making any comp tickets - even for performers, available.
This means that "gavel-to-gavel" coverage of the event by CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE is going to be difficult to achieve. Anyone attending
the convention who might like to cover the event for CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE should send me a note.

CABARET MONTH is just
around the corner, in many parts of the country and even the world.
The month-long March celebration was originally started by MAC (Manhattan
Association of Cabarets & Clubs) to promote cabaret attendance in
what was normally a slow month in the clubs. CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
wants to promote CABARET MONTH shows and activities anywhere, so send
in you special press releases for inclusion on the website and also
in the newsletter.
Here in NYC, CABARET MONTH
is normally "book ended" by the BACK STAGE Bistro Awards at the beginning
of March, and the Annual MAC Awards at the end of the month. Look
to CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE to keep you informed of these two special
events, as well as other CABARET MONTH events wherever they happen.
By the way, the MAC tentative
preliminary ballot (which has now been mailed to members of MAC) is
posted on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/).
This list is made up of all the performers who have decided to place
their names in nomination. It will be voted on by members of MAC (Manhattan
Association of Cabarets & Clubs - http://www.macnyc.com/),
and then the final ballot - pruned to about three names in each category
- will be mailed out to the members.
The 18th Annual MAC Awards
show will be held at SYMPHONY SPACE (Broadway at 95th Street - 212-864-1414)
on Monday, April 14th at 7:30 pm. No word on the BACK STAGE Bistro
Awards date, which is usually announced about this time of year.
Seth Rudetsky's guests
on tonight's BROADWAY CHATTERBOX at 6:00 pm at DON'T TELL MAMA (343
West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/)
are Julia Sweeney & the cast of BETTY RULES. If you have any interest
in musical theater, you should be attending these interview shows
every week. I rarely have time, opportunity or finances to attend
Broadway shows, but I have learned more about Broadway from these
interviews than going to 100 Broadway shows a year! Cost is a $10
and 2-drink minimum. Best of all, all proceeds go to BROADWAY CARES/EQUITY
FIGHTS AIDS (http://www.bcefa.org/)!
For details, see: http://www.geocities.com/broadwaychatterbox/.
SPECIAL NOTE about DON'T
TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/):
They are strictly enforcing the reservation list and room capacity
limits - you should make sure you have a reservation before heading
to the club. Those without reservations may be turned away.
Please don't miss out
on another feature of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/)
- the MESSAGE BOARD - where anyone, anywhere, can post information
about their shows, CDs or other cabaret-related event. You can also
post requests and questions about cabaret performance, and share your
thoughts and ideas of cabaret. You don't have to be a member of CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE, you don't have to fill out a form, you don't need
one of those dreaded passwords. All you need to do is follow the rules
- clearly posted on the board. I will remove your message if I deem
it inappropriate. Fully 70% of visitors to the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/)
visit the MESSAGE BOARD. MESSAGE BOARD sponsorship is available so
please write for details.
For those folks who want
to keep their name in front of folks while the MAC (Manhattan Association
of Cabarets & Clubs - http://www.macnyc.com/)
voters make their choices on the preliminary and final ballots, our
web pages are read from 20,000 to 30,000 times per day by cabaret
lovers all over the world. Your ad banner will appear at random on
nearly all 1800+ pages - in full color if you wish - with a link to
your website for no extra charge.
Those running banners
will get mentioned in every issue of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE e-mail
newsletter as long as the banner is running. We have nearly 2,500
subscribers - the most readers of ANY cabaret-only publication (print
or e-mail)! You can even pay for your banner by credit card via PayPal
- http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/PayPalPayment.shtml
and get a discount, if the total cost of the run is over $100. For
example, a 3-week ad, paid for by credit card, would cost less than
$35 per week! And a 4-week ad, by this method, would cost just $33.35
per week.
Your advertising dollars
will help me continue to promote the art of cabaret on the website,
publish the e-mail newsletter, and make visits to various cabaret
events and performances locally and around the country.
AS PROMISED: Each weekly
issue of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE newsletter includes a rundown
of all the banner advertisers on the website - and these items will
be repeated as long as the banner is running. Here is news about the
folks whose banners are currently appearing on the CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/).

Artists are including selections by this versatile Songwriter in their
show lineups in the coming months. On February 4th, Richard Skipper
as "Carol Channing" debuted "Swing," (Karen's tribute to dance understudies)
in his show at the Triad, which continues in that venue through March.
Anthony Santelmo Jr. included a selection from this CD in his act
at Judy's Chelsea in November, in addition to "The Call," written
in response to 9/11, which received great radio airplay both locally
and across the nation. This powerful anthem of healing and unity had
a part in numerous live commemorative events and at the UN. "The Perfect
Gift," a unique way of looking at Christmas with love as the perfect
offering, was demo recorded by Marieann Meringolo, and had wide live
and radio airplay as well. "... Gift" was honored to be featured in

touching at the same time. And the comedy/parody songs he sings are
unbelievable. - BEST 25 CABARET SHOWS OF 2002 RECIPIENT -

I urge you to make a reservation (if his shows are not sold-out already)!
This fellow is not a youngster, but his vocals are those of a 25-year-old!
The theme is romance, and I recommend taking someone you love along
as a date. It should set the tone for a very romantic evening.
Singer and comedienne
Jude Treder-Wolff returns with her show "Whistling In The Dark" to
DANNY'S SKYLIGHT ROOM (342 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-265-8133

with just one more show left, on Sunday, February 16th at 4:00 pm.
There is a $15.00 music charge and a $10.00 food/drink minimum. I
saw this show last year, and again the other night - and if you have
seen her show before it is well worth a second visit. Ms. Treder-Wolff
presents a combination of stand-up comedy with fantastic singing -
she is most talented at both skills. This show is a winner!
DON'T OVERLOOK THIS OPPORTUNITY
TO PROMOTE YOUR WEBSITE!
Cabaret performers can
also request a link to their website on the Performers Links pages
on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website - you don't need to be a member.
You should check this section just to make sure your name is listed
and properly linked. See http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/CabaretLinksIndex.shtml
While there, see if there
is another category on the page that you should be linked through
as well - Songwriter, Director, Videographer, etc. You do not have
to be a member to have a link on these pages. Please tell your friends
about this section of the website - eventually we hope it will become
sort of a "Cabaret Yellow Pages" section where you can find hundreds
of resources in putting together your show or recording your CD.
Remember, you need a website
to be linked. An e-mail address is not sufficient.
Information about other
shows around the country and around the world can be found on the
BREAKING NEWS page of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/)
as well as in the LISTINGS section. I have also been adding piano
bar and lounge listings for all areas. New items are added almost
daily!

How do you get an item
posted in the BREAKING NEWS section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/)?
Just e-mail me a press release of at least four paragraphs, giving
the complete information on your show, CD release or other cabaret
related event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available. But
please send me complete information - and do not merely send a copy
of your flier. By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from
the press releases I receive before using the item on my website or
in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the four
or more paragraphs.
Here's another reason
to be a member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE: All members have the opportunity
to have their CDs available for sale via the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
website. SILVER MEMBERS can display one CD on their page, GOLD MEMBERS
and above can display up to four CDs (additional CDs - GOLD or above
members only - can be added, if requested, at $15 each). The CD FOR
SALE listing includes a special page under your name, displaying your
CD cover(s) and a link to a website of your choice where the CD may
be purchased. You can link to your own website, or to LML Music, CD
Baby, Amazon, or some other site. This benefit is by request, so if
you already are a member, please let me know if you wish to be linked
in this section of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE - see http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/MemberCDSales2002.shtml.
If you CD FOR SALE page is already posted, please check to see if
the link is correct and if it is working properly. I need a copy of
your CD or a jpg scan of the CD cover in order to build the page.
