CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE #030205 - Thursday, February 27, 2003
Since 1990 Your First, Best, and Only Complete Source of Cabaret News

If it's anything to do with cabaret, you'll probably read it here first!

I guess there will be no more 23-hour train trips for me. Sunday and Monday I once more spent the time at home, with an extremely bad cold. I ventured out on Tuesday to get my mail on Ninth Avenue and to catch two cabaret shows, but yesterday I again spent most of the day in bed. I feel much better today, and will try to make it into town tonight. But it has been a very non-productive week. I have tried to post some new items on the website, but the combination of headache, sore throat and runny nose makes writing rather difficult. I actually started this issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE last night, and will be making a few finishing touches today before sending it out.

As we announced on the BREAKING NEWS page of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/), suddenly and abruptly, THE FIREBIRD UPSTAIRS SUPPER CLUB (363 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-586-0244 - http://www.firebirdrestaurant.com/) closed down. I was told, but was unable to confirm at this writing, that Stephen Downey, who was serving as producer/booker for the room resigned on Tuesday, the 25th. The performers scheduled for upcoming dates were informed that for the near future at least, performances have been cancelled. I shall try to get more information as to the future of the space, and will let everyone know in a future issue or on the website.

The balance of Todd Shuman's reports on the SECOND ANNUAL CHICAGO CABARET CONVENTION reports are posted on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/).

As soon as I get rid of this flu bug, I will be posting my "Stu's Excellent Chicago Adventure" report on the website. The top-25 of NYC cabaret report hopefully will be up on the web tomorrow - I simply have been unable to do much writing at all this week. As you will read in my report on the Chicago trip, expenses ran a lot more than budgeted, so if anyone would like to help support the costs of that trip (by helping me pay down my credit card so that I can attend future events), you can send in a special RUBY SUPPORTER donation. For information on making a RUBY SUPPORTER of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, check at http://svhamstra.com/Membership2002Ruby.shtml or else just send me a note at ruby@svhamstra.com with the single word "Ruby" in the subject line, and I'll send all the details.

CABARET MONTH (MARCH) is just a few days away, in many parts of the country and even the world. The month-long March celebration was originally started by MAC (Manhattan Association of Cabarets & Clubs) to promote cabaret attendance in what was normally a slow month in the clubs. CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE wants to promote your CABARET MONTH shows and activities anywhere, so send in you special press releases for inclusion on the website and also in the newsletter.

Here in NYC, CABARET MONTH is normally "book ended" by the BACK STAGE Bistro Awards at the beginning of March, and the Annual MAC Awards at the end of the month. Look to CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE to keep you informed of these two special events, as well as other CABARET MONTH events wherever they happen.

The 18th Annual MAC Awards show will be held at SYMPHONY SPACE (Broadway at 95th Street - 212-864-1414) on Monday, April 14th at 7:30 pm. MAC will honor master Jazz pianist Barbara Carroll with the Lifetime Achievement Award. Oscar Award-winning composer/lyricist Stephen Schwartz and International chanteuse Mary Cleere Haran will be honored with Board of Directors Awards. The producer, Barry Levitt, and the director, Lennie Watts, will collaborate on the star-packed event to include live performances from honorees, former MAC Award winners and other special guests. MCs for the evening will be Jay Rodgers and Collette Hawley.

By the way, as soon as the nominations for this year's MAC Awards are announced, we will be holding our CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE Straw Poll - where members can register their votes - even if they are not MAC members. Last year's Straw Poll was only about 50% accurate, partly due to the low number of voters that took part. Hopefully, this year more members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE will take part. It is all in fun, and this year we will have a special prize for the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE voter that comes closest on their ballot to the actual winners. More details next issue.

BACK STAGE Bistro Awards have been announced and the winners have been posted on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/). There will be a Special Award: To Matt Dennis, posthumously, in recognition of his contribution to the Great American Songbook; to JUDY'S CHELSEA (169 Eighth Avenue, NYC - 1-212-929-5410 - http://www.judyschelsea.com/), for continuous excellence and nurturing of cabaret; to Joy Behar, in recognition of "Joy's Comedy Corner" on ABC's "The View" and its contributions made to the comedy industry; to Mark Nadler, in recognition of his continuing to raise the standards of cabaret performance.

Also a new award, the Ira Eaker Special Achievement Award, is being named for Sherry Eaker's father, who passed away this past June. Co-founder and copublisher of Back Stage, he had a passion for this art form and was the first one to write cabaret reviews in Back Stage - under the heading of "Bistro Bits"! For its debut year, the award goes to an outstanding performer on the rise, Peter Cincotti. This year's Bob Harrington Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to Barbara Carroll.

Winners of the 2003 Bistro Awards will be celebrated at a private, invitation-only black-tie party hosted by Back Stage.

In addition to airplay on David Kenney's "Everything Old is New Again" on Sunday nights on WBAI (96.5 FM), as well as on other radio stations, several Artists are including selections by this versatile Songwriter in their show lineups in the coming months. On February 4th, Richard Skipper as "Carol Channing" debuted "Swing," (Karen's tribute to dance understudies) in his show at the Triad, which continues in that venue through March. Anthony Santelmo Jr. included a selection from this CD in his act at Judy's Chelsea in November, in addition to "The Call," written in response to 9/11, which received great radio airplay both locally and across the nation. This powerful anthem of healing and unity had a part in numerous live commemorative events and at the UN. "The Perfect Gift," a unique way of looking at Christmas with love as the perfect offering, was demo recorded by Marieann Meringolo, and had wide live and radio airplay as well. "... Gift" was honored to be featured in the MAC/ASCAP Holiday Songwriters Showcase. Vol. 2 of "... the Songs of Karen Benedetto" is in progress. There's a lot more, so please visit Karen's website to sample her CD as well as other selections: http://www.KarenBenedettoSongs.com/.

DON'T OVERLOOK THIS OPPORTUNITY TO PROMOTE YOUR WEBSITE!

Cabaret performers can also request a link to their website on the Performers Links pages on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website - you don't need to be a member. You should check this section just to make sure your name is listed and properly linked. See http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/CabaretLinksIndex.shtml

While there, see if there is another category on the page that you should be linked through as well - Songwriter, Director, Videographer, etc. You do not have to be a member to have a link on these pages. Please tell your friends about this section of the website - eventually we hope it will become sort of a "Cabaret Yellow Pages" section where you can find hundreds of resources in putting together your show or recording your CD.

Remember, you need a website to be linked. An e-mail address is not sufficient.

Information about other shows around the country and around the world can be found on the BREAKING NEWS page of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/) as well as in the LISTINGS section. I have also been adding piano bar and lounge listings for all areas. New items are added almost daily!

How do you get an item posted in the BREAKING NEWS section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/)? Just e-mail me a press release of at least four paragraphs, giving the complete information on your show, CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available. But please send me complete information - and do not merely send a copy of your flier. By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from the press releases I receive before using the item on my website or in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the four or more paragraphs.

Here's another reason to be a member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE: All members have the opportunity to have their CDs available for sale via the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website. SILVER MEMBERS can display one CD on their page, GOLD MEMBERS and above can display up to four CDs (additional CDs - GOLD or above members only - can be added, if requested, at $15 each). The CD FOR SALE listing includes a special page under your name, displaying your CD cover(s) and a link to a website of your choice where the CD may be purchased. You can link to your own website, or to LML Music, CD Baby, Amazon, or some other site. This benefit is by request, so if you already are a member, please let me know if you wish to be linked in this section of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE - see http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/MemberCDSales2002.shtml. If you CD FOR SALE page is already posted, please check to see if the link is correct and if it is working properly. I need a copy of your CD or a jpg scan of the CD cover in order to build the page.
