Since 1990 Your First, Best, and Only Complete Source of Cabaret
News
If it's anything to do
with cabaret, you'll probably read it here first!
Well,
I sent out the annual April Fool issue on Tuesday, and apparently
from all the e-mails and comments I received, a lot of folks did not
look carefully at the issue and the date, and so I must answer several
misconceptions.
First off, I am not currently
planning to move to Boston. I have made a lot of friends here (I am
currently in Boston to attend a few cabaret events) and I love the
city. But I have not been searching for an apartment here - why should
I miss out on all the bickering, complaining and back-stabbing of
NY?
Next, I have never been
in Margaret Whiting's apartment (I have no idea where it is!) and
am not planning to replace the flags on my website with MAC logos.
I am certain that MAC (Manhattan Association of Cabarets & Clubs -
http://www.macnyc.com/)
has no plans to put the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE logo on their website.
In fact, except for the
opening paragraphs regarding my current visit to Boston, all the rest
was my own rather insane imagination working overtime.
Oh, and Ron Pool and Nancy
Witter are not planning a June wedding.
CABARET "MUST SEE" EVENT
Here is a special note
from Baby Jane Dexter. The cabaret-themed film "Showbiz Is My Life"
featuring Baby Jane, as well as Julie Wilson and Natalie Gamsu, will
be shown on WNET - Channel 13 in the NYC area - extremely early Tuesday
morning, April 7th at 1:00 am. I saw this film and it is a "must see"
for anyone who loves cabaret.
ANOTHER CABARET VENUE DISAPPEARS
BLACK ROCK CENTER FOR
PERFORMING ARTS (12901 Town Commons Drive, Germantown, MD - 301-528-2260
- http://www.blackrockcenter.org/)

have it.
CABARET BULLETINS AVAILABLE
From
time to time we receive information about show cancellations, last-minute
cast changes, or other items of interest to cabaret lovers specific
to a single geographical location. Rather then send out a general
bulletin to the entire 2,500 subscribers, I am setting up a process
to target subscribers that might have an interest in these items.
The bulletins will be
short, and may include a link to a longer item on the website. Already
over 100 interested folks have signed up for this FREE service from
CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, and were the first to learn of the closing
of JUDY'S CHELSEA and the change in the way TIME OUT NY will cover
(?) cabaret.
This special NYC e-mailing
list is a 2-month test. If you would like to be a part of this list,
please follow the instructions below. The subscription will be automatic.
You will receive confirmation. If we feel it is successful, we will
extend the program to other areas (BOSTON - CHICAGO - WEST COAST,
etc.). At some point during the test period I will be asking those
on the list for feedback, suggestions and comments.
Just click the line below

Singers Symposium is a vocal performance workshop for singers focusing
on Concert, Cabaret, Jazz, Saloon and Pop. It will take place in Siena,

REMINDER
BANNER AD spaces on the
CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website ARE selling out fast for April. Note
that we limit the ads to 20 banners per week, so if you plan to order
a banner, reserve your banner space as soon as possible. Over 5,000
folks visit our website each day - on average reading 6 or 7 pages.
Ads are displayed in two places on nearly all 1,800+ pages.
For information on banner
ads, check out the banner information page on the CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/BannerHere.shtml),
or simply send me a note at banners@svhamstra.com
with the single word "Banner" in the subject line and I'll send all
the details.
Those running banners
will get mentioned in every issue of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE e-mail
newsletter (current circulation nearly 2,500) as long as the banner
is running. Your advertising dollars will help continue to promote
the art of cabaret on the website, publish the e-mail newsletter,
and make visits to various cabaret events and performances locally
and around the country.
SAVE THE DATES! FUTURE CABARET
EVENTS
This year's CABARETFEST!
in Provincetown will be the weekend of May 15th through 18th with
special guest Eileen Fulton! See the CABARETFEST website for details
on the great shows, seminars and Master Class events at this year's
fest. This is a great opportunity to learn about cabaret via the seminars
and Master Classes, see cabaret performances, and enjoy the pleasures
of this glorious and historic city before the big crows of summer
take over. Oh, yes, and enjoy the best clam chowder found anywhere.
Once again, CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE will be there! Stay tuned.
This year's 2003 ADELAIDE
AUSTRALIA CABARET FESTIVAL (http://www.adelaidecabaret.com)
will be June 6th through 22nd. I will be giving you more details on
this huge event, which last year had an estimated attendance of 45,000
people over the 17 days of the festival. This festival has become
a landmark in Australia's arts landscape, and another example of how
South Australia is once again taking the lead in premier arts events
on a national scale. I think this festival takes the title as the
largest cabaret event in the world!
The 2003 SYDNEY AUSTRALIA
CABARET CONVENTION (http://www.cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au/cabaret/general.html)
will be held at the Sydney Town Hall over five nights Ý Tuesday May
27th through Saturday May 31st. The Convention will include four Showcase
sessions. The final night is the Gala Night when the three award winners
will be announced.
Outstanding cabaret performers
are invited to audition on Friday and Saturday April 11th and 12th
in the Marconi Room at Sydney Town Hall. Contact Gail Marshall via
e-mail: gmarshall@cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au
or telephone at 02 9265 9114 for audition information.
My Australian friend and
correspondent, David M. Schwartz, tells me that from the advance plans
he has heard of, this year's convention will be the best yet - he
advises me to visit Sydney for this one, then head to Adelaide for
the festival. I am buying those lotto tickets weekly - I would certainly
love to see both events!
The 14th ANNUAL NYC CABARET
CONVENTION will be held this fall from October 20th through 26th,
2003. For information about the Mabel Mercer Foundation and to order
tickets for the Cabaret Convention, please contact their headquarters
in New York at 212-980-3026 or write to them at:

CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE MAC
AWARDS STRAW POLL
Now that the final nominations
for this year's MAC Awards are announced, we are holding our CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE Straw Poll - where members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
can register their votes - even if they are not MAC members. Last
year's Straw Poll was only about 50% accurate, partly due to the low
number of voters that took part. Hopefully, this year more members
of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE will take part. It is all in fun, and this
year we will have a special prize for the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE voter
that comes closest on their ballot to the actual winners. All current,
paid-up members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE should have received their
official ballot, and they must be completed and mailed back by this
Saturday, April 5th for tabulation.
For information on becoming
a contributing member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, check at http://svhamstra.com/Membership.shtml
or else just send me a note at membership@svhamstra.com with the single
word "membership" in the subject line, and I'll send all the details.

CURRENT AND UPCOMING MAJOR
CABARET RELATED EVENTS
Scott Siegel is producing,
writing and hosting one more World Cabaret Series show at THE TOWN
HALL (123 West 43rd Street, NYC - http://www.the-townhall-nyc.org/)
this season - and it's tomorrow, Friday, April 4th at 8:00 pm! The
show, called "Sentimental Journey," is devoted to the American music
of World War II. Scott could not have known when this show was planned
how incredibly timely it would be.
Siegel has an extraordinary
songbook to draw upon and, like the other "World Cabaret" shows, he's
also largely drawn upon our cabaret community to perform on the Town
Hall stage. This show is no exception. The headliner is Karen Mason.
She's supported by Special Guest Star Debbie Gravitte, and the six
featured cabaret artists are Marnie Baumer, Jarrod Cafaro, Scott Coulter,
Jonathan Frank, Martha Lorin, and Karen Oberlin. The evening is so
full of cabaret artists that it even has two musical directors, Steven
Ray Watkins and Tedd Firth.
Siegel said, "One of the
primary purposes behind my producing the World Cabaret Series at Town
Hall has been my effort to promote cabaret and its artists to a larger
audience. I try to do that, as well, in the "Broadway by the Year"
series, but these shows are tailor made for cabaret and I have been
thrilled by the audience response to the people I have so far been
able to present. I have great hopes and expectations for the "Sentimental
Journey" show on April 4th. I think the cabaret folks in that cast
are going to make all of us in the community proud."
Tickets for this show
is either $35 or $30. The Town Hall box office is open from noon to
6:00 pm, Monday through Saturday. There is a more complete story in
the "Breaking News" section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website
(http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/).
"Timeless Divas!" - the
new series featuring the wonderful women over 40 in Cabaret, Theater
and Songwriting, produced by ShaRell Productions (Sandi Durell and
Shari Upbin), present their third show in the series this Sunday night,
April 6th at 7:00 pm at THE TRIAD (158 West 72nd Street, NYC - Reservations:
212-615-6966 or http://www.durellproductions.com/sharell).
The first two DIVA evenings were sell outs, garnering great reviews.
There is a $20.00 cover charge (or $25 for VIP Reserved Seating) Cash
Only plus a $12 Food/Beverage Minimum. Doors open 6:00 pm. Early Reservations
Suggested. This up-coming evening presents Celebrity Host Phyllis
Newman along with performers: Helen Baldassare, Claiborne Cary, BJ
Crosby, Linda Glick, Merle Louise, Sharon McNight, Mary Testa, Kimberly
Vaughn and the former star of "Chicago" & "Fosse" and new wife to
Marion Caffey (and expectant Mom), Stephanie Pope will be performing.
Richard Skipper as "Carol Channing" will be joining the cast as well!
A portion of the proceeds from this event will be donated to The Phyllis
Newman Women's Health Initiative of the Actor's Fund. There is a more
complete story, with photo, in the "Breaking News" section of the
CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/).
The 4th Annual Cabaret
Today Awards will be presented on Monday, April 7th at SWING 46 (349
West 46th Street, NYC - 212-262-9554). The Cabaret Today Awards are
presented to non-peformers, or those who make significant contributions
to the field aside from performance. It's a decidedly irreverent toast
to, and roast of, the movers and fakers in cabaret and the show features
a stellar cast of some of the finest talent working New York City's
small stages today. There will be a champagne & hors d'oeuvres reception
from 6:30 until 7:30 pm with the awards presentation and show from
7:30 until 10:30 pm. There is a $25 cash door charge and 2-drink show
minimum. $10 cash door charge after 8:00 pm with bar seating only.
A full dinner menu is available beginning at 5:30 pm.
Hosted by Gregory Kennell
with musical director Ricky Ritzel, the show will feature performances
by Brandon Cutrell, Natalie Douglas, Ludmilla (Milla) Yazwin Iliveva,
Joseph "Go" Mahan, Mark Nadler, Georga Osborne, Jeanne Resua, Craig
Rubano, Diana Templeton, and the NYC debut of Deborajane & Jennifer
Governor. Event Coordination & Technical Direction is by Zachary Sommerfield.

in January, The Genesius Guild will be hosting a premiere party to
celebrate the opening of their new cabaret room, UPSTAIRS @ RED (356

How do you get an item
posted in the BREAKING NEWS section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/)?
Just e-mail me a press release of at least four paragraphs, giving
the complete information on your show, CD release or other cabaret
related event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available. But
please send me complete information - and do not merely send a copy
of your flier. By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from
the press releases I receive before using the item on my website or
in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the four
or more paragraphs.
A WORD FROM OUR SPONSORS
REMEMBER: Each weekly
issue of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE newsletter includes a rundown
of all the banner advertisers on the website - and these items will
be repeated as long as the banner is running. There is a more complete
article on nearly all these items in the BREAKING NEWS section of
the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/).

DON'T OVERLOOK THIS OPPORTUNITY
TO PROMOTE YOUR WEBSITE!
Cabaret performers can
also request a link to their website on the Performers Links pages
on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website - you don't need to be a member.
You should check this section just to make sure your name is listed
and properly linked. See http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/CabaretLinksIndex.shtml
While there, see if there
is another category on the page that you should be linked through
as well - Songwriter, Director, Videographer, etc. You do not have
to be a member to have a link on these pages. Please tell your friends
about this section of the website - eventually we hope it will become
sort of a "Cabaret Yellow Pages" section where you can find hundreds
of resources in putting together your show or recording your CD.
Remember, you need a website
to be linked. An e-mail address is not sufficient.
