CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE #030403 - Thursday, April 10, 2003
Since 1990 Your First, Best, and Only Complete Source of Cabaret News

If it's anything to do with cabaret, you'll probably read it here first!

Well, we're back to a Thursday publication date with this issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE but we are seriously thinking of changing to a twice-a-week issue, at least until the summer months of July & August, when things usually slow down on the cabaret scene. I would love to hear from our readers about this - perhaps a Monday issue with the MAJOR ROOMS section, a NEW ON THE WEBSITE listing, a rundown of the banner ad sponsors and "latest news," followed by the Thursday issue with more "latest news," a rundown of FUTURE MAJOR CABARET EVENTS, and a new section - not quite reviews - of SHOWS SEEN IN THE PAST WEEK.

Since we will be sending out a special report on the MAC AWARDS show next week on Tuesday, the 15th, we may do a "test run" for a few weeks starting the week of April 20th. Meantime, send me your thoughts and suggestions, as well as any improvements you would like to see in future issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE.

I don't normally get to see Broadway shows, since I simply don't have time. But on Tuesday, the 8th, thanks to the folks at the Pete Sanders publicity firm, I attended URBAN COWBOY, currently playing at THE BROADHURST THEATRE (235 West 44th Street, NYC - Tele-Charge: 212-239-6200). I especially wanted to see this show because it features several cabaret folks: Sally Mayes and Jodi Stevens have leading roles in the show, and the conductor/musical director/arranger is Jason Robert Brown, who also wrote several of the songs in the show, with other songs contributed by Jeff Blumenkrantz. Both Jason and Jeff have written songs regularly performed in cabaret shows.

URBAN COWBOY has taken a lot of hits: the death of the original director Phil Oesterman, the musicians strike just as they started preview performances, the start of the war in Iraq with the accompanying heightened security concerns, the sluggish economy, the fear of travelling into this city and some not-so-wonderful reviews. Things looked so bad, that the show was scheduled to close after only four performances. But anyone who talks about "greedy producers" has to take note of what happened next. The producers realized that if they went through with their plan to "cut their losses" and close, that none of the songs, performers, etc. in the show would be eligible for a TONY Award. So they added their own funds to an already money-losing show, to keep it running for a few extra weeks, so that the official TONY voters would have a chance to see it. And it game me a chance to see it as well.

I didn't read the reviews, but after seeing the show, I can only say it is fantastic, rip-roaring, hoot-hollering, high-energy, totally-captivating presentation - a delightful love story filled wonderful songs and amazing performances. I don't know how much longer the producers can keep this one running, but if there was ever a show where everyone was giving 150% or more, this is the one. If you can find the time, catch URBAN COWBOY - who knows, maybe if enough folks show their support, the show will be around a lot longer. It certainly deserves it. I guarantee you will have a good time - the cast is truly talented! Sally Mayes is outstanding - as are the rest of the leads, many experiencing their debut on Broadway. I loved it - and I hope to see it again, this time paying for my own ticket to lend my support to the producers.

MAC AWARDS - THIS COMING MONDAY

The 17th Annual MAC Awards show will be held at SYMPHONY SPACE (Broadway at 95th Street - 212-864-5400) on Monday, April 14th at 7:30 pm. Tickets are available at the box office. MAC will honor master Jazz pianist Barbara Carroll with the Lifetime Achievement Award. Oscar Award-winning composer/lyricist Stephen Schwartz and International chanteuse Mary Cleere Haran will be honored with Board of Directors Awards. The producer, Barry Levitt, and the director, Lennie Watts, will collaborate on the star-packed event to include live performances from honorees, former MAC Award winners and other special guests. MCs for the evening will be Jay Rodgers and Collette Hawley.

You have just a few more days to get your tickets, and from all I hear, the show promises to be a great one, with top cabaret talent, the MAC Award nominees, and several surprises. I hear that over 100 cabaret performers will be included in the opening number alone!

You can order your tickets by phone - $25 for rear balcony seats, $60 for front balcony and the orchestra, and $125 for prime orchestra. Phone the Symphony Space Box Office at 212-864-5400, any day, any time between 11:00 am and 7:00 pm where you can order by credit card. Or stop by in person any day between Noon and 7:00 pm. By the way, if you have ordered tickets by phone and are planning to pick them up that night on the way in to the show, be sure to do it early, preferably by 6:30 PM. Symphony Space has a small lobby, and you may find yourself in a people jam.

TIME OUT NY WATCH

For folks who anticipated better cabaret coverage in TIME OUT NY with the dropping of the special cabaret section in favor of blending cabaret into the music section, the record of the past three weeks shows quite the opposite. Under the old system, one could expect at least one (and many times two) special cabaret performance photos with captions per issue. In the past three weeks, TONY has featured about 20 photos in the music section, with not a single one featuring a cabaret performer! Under the old system, cabaret editor H. Scott Jolley would also list 4 or 5 Cabaret Picks of the Week per issue. Under the new system, where all "picks" are listed together, cabaret has only garnered 3 picks in three weeks! I also hear that the cabaret editor's working hours have been cut to less than half of what they were before the change. I fail to see how this could provide better coverage and exposure for cabaret.

Oh, by the way, in this week's issue - the last issue before the MAC AWARDS SHOW (jointly sponsored with TIME OUT NY) there is merely a less-than-one inch listing for the Awards show, mixed among the other listings, and no feature photo, no feature article, no inclusion among the special music events (Karen Akers' appearance at THE OAK ROOM is the only cabaret event in the special list!). By the way, MAC does have another large ad in this issue.

Now, I am not suggesting that people cancel their subscriptions, or even show their displeasure with TONY at the MAC AWARDS show on Monday night when the magazine is scheduled to give a special presentation. After all, cabaret folks are known for their tolerance, their aversion to controversy and their support of others. But you might want to send a note to TIME OUT with your thoughts, so I again list an address for your convenience:

TIME OUT NEW YORK
627 Broadway - Seventh Floor
New York, NY 10012

Editor-in-Chief: Joe Angio
Managing Editor: Elizabeth Barr
E-Mail: letters@timeoutny.com
Editorial Fax: 212-460-8744

Here is what you will probably receive as an answer from Joe Angio, Editor-in-Chief, to your note:

"Thank you for taking the time to write. While yes, it's true, I've eliminated the cabaret section of TONY, I am in no way reducing our coverage of NYC's cabaret world. In fact, by folding the cabaret listings into the music section, we are now able to give cabaret MORE coverage. Given the weekly space constraints of the magazine, we were never able to devote more than one page to the section, which, as you know, was limited to listings; we never had room to do short articles or previews on upcoming performances. Now, however, we can run cabaret-related articles in the larger music section. Mind you, rock, pop and jazz will still be the mainstays of this section, and will be represented accordingly. Still, we will have at very least the same amount of listings coverage as we used to in the dedicated cabaret section, with the added bonus of being able to run periodic cabaret-related articles."

Sure Joe, and I suppose you have a bridge to Brooklyn to sell me as well!

SAVE THE DATES! FUTURE MAJOR CABARET EVENTS

This year's CABARETFEST! (http://www.cabaretfest.com/) in Provincetown will be the weekend of May 15th through 18th with special guest Eileen Fulton! See the CABARETFEST website for details on the great shows, seminars and Master Class events at this year's fest. This is a great opportunity to learn about cabaret via the seminars and Master Classes, see cabaret performances, and enjoy the pleasures of this glorious and historic city before the big crows of summer take over. Oh, yes, and enjoy the best clam chowder found anywhere. Once again, CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE will be there! Stay tuned.

This year's 2003 ADELAIDE AUSTRALIA CABARET FESTIVAL (http://www.adelaidecabaret.com) will be June 6th through 22nd. I will be giving you more details on this huge event, which last year had an estimated attendance of 45,000 people over the 17 days of the festival. This festival has become a landmark in Australia's arts landscape, and another example of how South Australia is once again taking the lead in premier arts events on a national scale. I think this festival takes the title as the largest cabaret event in the world!

The 2003 SYDNEY AUSTRALIA CABARET CONVENTION (http://www.cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au/cabaret/general.html) will be held at the Sydney Town Hall over five nights Ý Tuesday May 27th through Saturday May 31st. The Convention will include four Showcase sessions. The final night is the Gala Night when the three award winners will be announced.

Outstanding cabaret performers are invited to audition on Friday and Saturday April 11th and 12th in the Marconi Room at Sydney Town Hall. Contact Gail Marshall via e-mail: gmarshall@cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au or telephone at 02 9265 9114 for audition information.

My Australian friend and correspondent, David M. Schwartz, tells me that from the advance plans he has heard of, this year's convention will be the best yet - he advises me to visit Sydney for this one, then head to Adelaide for the festival. I am buying those lotto tickets weekly - I would certainly love to see both events!

The 14th ANNUAL NYC CABARET CONVENTION will be held this fall from October 20th through 26th, 2003. For information about the Mabel Mercer Foundation and to order tickets for the Cabaret Convention, please contact their headquarters in New York at 212-980-3026 or write to them at:

How do you get an item posted in the BREAKING NEWS section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/)? Just e-mail me a press release of at least four paragraphs, giving the complete information on your show, CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available. But please send me complete information - and do not merely send a copy of your flier. By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from the press releases I receive before using the item on my website or in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the four or more paragraphs.

CABARET BULLETINS AVAILABLE

From time to time we receive information about show cancellations, last-minute cast changes, or other items of interest to cabaret lovers specific to a single geographical location. Rather then send out a general bulletin to the entire 2,500 subscribers, I am setting up a process to target subscribers that might have an interest in these items.

The bulletins will be short, and may include a link to a longer item on the website. Already over 100 interested folks have signed up for this FREE service from CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, and were the first to learn of the closing of JUDY'S CHELSEA and the change in the way TIME OUT NY will cover (?) cabaret.

This special NYC e-mailing list is a 2-month test. If you would like to be a part of this list, please follow the instructions below. The subscription will be automatic. You will receive confirmation. If we feel it is successful, we will extend the program to other areas (BOSTON - CHICAGO - WEST COAST, etc.). At some point during the test period I will be asking those on the list for feedback, suggestions and comments.

Just click the line below and send:
