CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE #030405 - Part 1 - Monday, April 21, 2003
Since 1990 Your First, Best, and Only Complete Source of Cabaret News

If it's anything to do with cabaret, you'll probably read it here first!

This is a Monday Issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE - testing a new twice-a-week issue, at least until the normal slow-down of cabaret in the summer months, when many rooms, especially the major ones, go dark. The Monday issue will include the regular Major Rooms listings for around the world, and will also give information on all the banner ads running on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/). The Thursday issue will concentrate more on news, breaking stories and notes on shows seen - things we have not had space for in our once-a-week issues. We look forward to receiving your comments and suggestions on this new system.

I am still loading photos from the 17th Annual MAC Awards that was held a week ago at SYMPHONY SPACE - Henri Van Ryn sent me nearly 100 photos, and we have uploaded 40 already. A hope to add another 30 photos or so in the next few days, so stay tuned. Check out http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/AwdMacPhoto01.shtml

SAD NEWS

We learned this morning from Kitty Skrobela that Bertram Ross, longtime partner of John Wallowitch, passed away last night. Bertram had been coping with Parkinson's for some time, and was in Cabrini Hospital at the last.

Bertram was well known as Martha Graham's principal dancer. He was John Wallowitch's longtime partner in life as well as in the show they did together for years at the Ballroom and other venues, a source of a lot of joy and laughter. They were the subject a beautiful film together, and recently released a CD ("Wallowitch & Ross" - Miranda Music) of the songs from their show. Both film & CD were released last fall, and you can find more about them at their website, http://www.wallowitchandross.com/.

John Wallowitch is scheduled to perform his show on Friday, April 25th at DANNY'S SKYLIGHT ROOM (342 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-265-8133 - http://www.dannysgrandseapalace.com/) at 7:00 pm and John plans to perform as scheduled. He says Bertram would never forgive him if he did otherwise.

There is a more complete story, with photo, in the "Breaking News" section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/). More information regarding funeral/memorial arrangements will follow.

The venue has meanwhile booked singer Janis Paige, whose film and theater credits include a starring run in Broadway's "The Pajama Game," for a 10-day run beginning April 30th.

The 76-year-old Short was forced to cancel his Thursday performance at THE CERRITOS CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS (12700 Center Court Drive, Cerritos, CA - 800-300-4345). This is the first time the Mr. Short has missed a performance in his lengthy career. CABARET BULLETINS AVAILABLE

From time to time we receive information about show cancellations, last-minute cast changes, or other items of interest to cabaret lovers specific to a single geographical location. Rather then send out a general bulletin to the entire 2,500 subscribers, I am setting up a process to target subscribers that might have an interest in these items.

The bulletins will be short, and may include a link to a longer item on the website. Already over 100 interested folks have signed up for this FREE service from CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, and were the first to learn of the closing of JUDY'S CHELSEA and the change in the way TIME OUT NY will cover (?) cabaret.

This special NYC e-mailing list is a 2-month test. If you would like to be a part of this list, please follow the instructions below. The subscription will be automatic. You will receive confirmation. If we feel it is successful, we will extend the program to other areas (BOSTON - CHICAGO - WEST COAST, etc.). At some point during the test period I will be asking those on the list for feedback, suggestions and comments.

Just click the line below and send:
