CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE #030405
- Part 2 - Thursday, April 24, 2003
Since 1990 Your First, Best, and Only Complete Source of Cabaret News
If it's anything to do
with cabaret, you'll probably read it here first!
This is a THURSDAY Issue
of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, part two of the issue we sent out on Monday.
We are testing a new twice-a-week issue, at least until the normal
slow-down of cabaret in the summer months, when many rooms, especially
the major ones, go dark. The Monday issue included the regular Major
Rooms listings for around the world, and will had information on all
the banner ads running on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/).
This Thursday issue will concentrate more on news, breaking stories
and notes on shows seen - things we have not had space for in our
once-a-week issues. We look forward to receiving your comments and
suggestions on this new system.
Meantime, I am still loading
photos from the 17th Annual MAC Awards that was held a week ago at
SYMPHONY SPACE - Henri Van Ryn sent me nearly 100 photos, and we have
uploaded more than 40 already. A hope to add another 20 of those photos
or so in the next few days, so stay tuned. John McMahon sent some
shots he took before and after the show, and Maryann Lopinto has just
sent some "back stage" photos. I will be adding these as well first
chance I get. Check out http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/AwdMacPhoto01.shtml
CABARET BULLETINS AVAILABLE

A WORD FROM OUR SPONSORS
Two banner advertisers
sent their information in too late to be included in the Monday section
of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE newsletter. So we include them here.

and Richard Rodgers. The show also includes some contemporary standards
and yet-to-become standards as well! The show is by invitation only,

MAN ON THE GO REPORT
This has been a great
year already for singer/actor Kelly Briggs - his "Lovely" show with
Jerry Christakos won a N.Y. NIGHTLIFE Award, was nominated for a MAC
Award, and has played at JUDY'S CHELSEA, DON'T TELL MAMA, REGENTS
and several other clubs this year. It will be performed at THE CABARET
at Odette's (South River Road, New Hope, PA - 215-862-3000 - http://www.odettes.com/)
this Sunday, and will also play at CABARETFEST! (http://www.cabaretfest.com/)
in Provincetown in May! On May 18th, Kelly will be joining other alumni
of the Broadway production of LES MISERABLES in the final Broadway
performance of this long-running show on Sunday, May 18th. Kelly performed
in "Les Miz" on the road for 6 years and then joined the Broadway
Company in 1996. Kelly also happens to be manager of REGENTS (317
East 53rd Street, NYC - 212-593-3091) which has just started a new
website (http://regentsclub.com/)
and has also opened a new cabaret room! Congratulations to a great
guy! For more on the "Lovely" show, see http://www.areyoulovely.com/.
ANOTHER PLUSH ROOM SHOW POSTPONED
THE PLUSH ROOM at the
York Hotel (940 Sutter Street, San Francisco, CA - 415-885-2800 -
http://www.plushroom.com/)
notes that Sam Harris' show at this famous cabaret room, originally
scheduled fro June 24th through July 11th, has been postponed - date
to be announced. Sam's one-man show "Sam" at the CANON THEATER in
Beverly Hills has been extended and moved to the CORONET THEATRE in
Los Angeles. A new date will be announced shortly.
As mentioned in Monday's
CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, pneumonia has forced film and Broadway star
Polly Bergen to cancel her show scheduled to run from Tuesday, April
22nd through May 11th at THE PLUSH ROOM at the York Hotel (940 Sutter
Street, San Francisco, CA - 415-885-2800 - http://www.plushroom.com/).
The venue has meanwhile booked singer Janis Paige, whose film and
theater credits include a starring run in Broadway's "The Pajama Game,"
for a 10-day run beginning April 30th.
JUDY'S CHELSEA "ORPHANED SHOWS"
UPDATE
With the sudden closing
of JUDY'S CHELSEA several performers with shows scheduled for the
room in the months of April & May had to find new venues for their
presentations - many after they had sent out expensive mailings and
press kits. CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE is listing these shows here, as
well as on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/)
as we receive information.
"PORT OF COLE," billed
as a "cabaret cruise through the romantic delights of Cole Porter"
and featuring Marilyn Zavidow, originally scheduled for JUDY'S CHELSEA
has been moved to DANNY'S SKYLIGHT ROOM (342 West 46th Street, NYC
- 1-212-265-8133 - http://www.dannysgrandseapalace.com/)
for one night only on May 1st at 9:15 pm. Musical director is David
Lewis. There is a $12 cover, 2-drink minimum.
Another show, originally
scheduled for JUDY'S CHELSEA has found a new home. After a year and
half of playing the Legendary Judy Garland in Charles Tolliver's play
"Judy and Me," Peter Mac is taking to the stage for two nights to
perform in Peter Mac "Is a Friend of Judy's" at REGENTS (317 East
53rd Street, NYC - 212-593-3091 - http://regentsclub.com/)
on Tuesdays, May 20th & 27th at 8:30 pm. In this show, Mac plays "the
other side of the rainbow," celebrating Garlands musical style and
great wit. There is a $10 cover, $12 food/drink minimum. - more -
If your show was originally
booked at JUDY'S CHELSEA, please let me know as soon as possible if/where/when
it has been re-booked so we can let folks know here.
TIME OUT NY WATCH - WEEK FOUR
If you are thinking of
rushing out to the newsstand to purchase the latest copy of TIME OUT
NY to see their coverage of last week's MAC Awards Show, perhaps with
a list of the winners, or at least a photo of the folks from THE DUPLEX
receiving their TIME OUT NY Award given at the show by the Editor-in-Chief
and Cabaret Editor of TONY (which cosponsored the MAC event), save
your $2.99. (You can see this photo in the photo report on my website.)
If you hoped that, as promised by the E-I-C at the show, you would
see an article or two or a photo or two about a cabaret event or personality,
save your money. (You can read dozens of reports and articles on my
website for free.) If you figured that at least this week, finally,
and promised by Mr. Angio, a cabaret show or two would be listed in
the "Best of the Rest ..." section, save your cash. If you figured
that TONY might at long last review or mention a Cabaret CD, what
were you thinking? This week's issue of TIME OUT NY continues their
record of ignoring the MAC and cabaret community!
You might want to send
another note to TIME OUT with your thoughts. Joe Angio claims he reads
them all. He might eventually get the message. If he saw even part
of the MAC Awards show, I think he would have discovered for himself
that cabaret is unlike anything else in live entertainment, and does
not deserve to have its listings mingled with other music venues and
events. I again list some addresses for your convenience:

SHOWS SEEN
One of the reasons why
I went to two issues of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE per week (at least
on a test basis) is that the single issues were getting so filled
with listings stuff, I had no room to mention shows seen and other
items of interest. So, here is some information on shows I've seen
the past few weeks that bear special mention.
Jenna Robinson, who did
a few shows earlier this month at THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher
Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/)
is a gal to watch! Possessing some of the most enchanting vocals hear
in some time, Janna presented a rarity in cabaret lately: an exquisite
show that kept moving, was extremely interesting, and filled with
wonderful songs. She breathed new life into every old song she sang,
and breathed new life into cabaret with some of the new material she
presented. Rick Jensen, at the piano, provided Jenna with some amazing
arrangements, and the whole delicious package was neatly wrapped my
director Lina Koutrakos. I am sure that this lady is going to repeat
this show soon - and I strongly advise you to be on the watch for
it, and make that reservation.
Amy Stevenson breezed
into town from Dallas with her musical director Mark Mullino for a
"quickie" weekend to present two shows at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West
46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/)
and to catch the MAC Awards show on Monday the 14th. Amy asked me
a few weeks ago if I thought she was ready for a press review, and
after seeing this show I give her a resounding "yes!" Amy is a musical
comedy gem who also brings new meaning and her own special insight
into the songs she chooses, both old and new. Big surprise was a beautiful
ballad by Mitchell Olsen (yes, the 7-foot tall stand-up comic! Who
knew?). Called "Near to You," the song was a show-stopper. Other original
songs by Mark Mullino and Candice Evens (with Amy contributing on
one) were also exciting new additions to the song list. The lady can
sing - she played Mama Rose in GYPSY in Dallas to rave reviews - and
gives her all, and much of her heart, in this show. I want to see
this one again!
Chris Anderson's THE MONEY
SHOT, is just ending its run at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street,
NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/).
It is a funny, fluffy revue that features Chris, along with Kristen
Dabrowski, Rebecca Kendall, Cheryl Orsini and Tim Herman. At times
just a little too big for smaller stage of the front cabaret room
at MAMA'S, the show was a rollicking romp through mostly familiar
songs, but all given a different (and humorous) spin. A great little
band made up of Brad Simmons (piano), Brian Petway (bass guitar) and
Justin Hines (drums) added to the sparkle of the show. Great fun was
had by all - including yours truly. Their final show is tonight, April
24th at 8:00 pm. I would give it a shot.
Sharon Ellzey is currently
also at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788
- http://www.donttellmama.com/)
with her show "So Here's to Life" with musical director Daniel Sticco.
The lady hails from the Washington DC area and this is her NYC debut.
With an impressive song list, laden with Amanda McBroom songs, Ms.
Ellzey gave an equally impressive performance. I wish that she had
given just a little more pizzazz to a few of the numbers, especially
the Kander/Ebb classic "The World Goes Round," but her renditions
of "Putting Things Away" and her closer "Here and Now," both by McBroom,
more than made up for it. She has one last show here in town on Saturday,
April 26th at 6:30 pm. With the welcome she received on opening night,
I am certain she will be returning soon.
I really has a lot of
fun at the "Jamie deRoy & friends" show at THE WEST BANK CAFE/LAURIE
BEECHMAN THEATER (407 West 42nd Street, NYC - 212-695-6909) last week.
There were several new names on the performer list, and it had been
some time since I went to one of these award-winning variety shows,
and I'm glad I chose this one! I had recently seen Debra Pitkin and
Adam Mastrelli in "From Where I Stand," also at THE WEST BANK, and
it was great to hear them at this show, unconstrained by the rather
pedantic songs in that show. Adam James was recently seen in the Bing
Crosby fiasco that played at (and closed) The FireBird, and Jose Llana
was seen recently in the prematurely closed FLOWER DRUM SONG. Lest
you think this show was made up of losers, think again. They were
all terrific! Barbara Fasano, never a loser, shone brightly as well,
and Anna Bergman was splendiferous. The two comics, James Oakes and
the aforementioned Mitchell Olsen were wildly funny as well. The only
"bump in the road" was Mercedes Hall. I hadn't heard her perform in
some time (she sells out every show she schedules, immediately) and
was startled to discover that her singing style is so far different
from her normal persona. I mentioned to my companion that she must
be impersonating someone - I couldn't figure out who. Either that,
or she is the whitest black woman in cabaret. Jamie was her usual
- a delightful host who allows her guests to shine brightly. A true
award winner.
Scott Davis recently made
his cabaret debut at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC -
1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/)
as well. You have probably often seen in BACK STAGE audition calls
for "Singers Who Act" or "Actors Who Sing." This handsome young man,
with a handsome voice, is clearly of the second category. He is inclined
to perform every song, rather than interpret it - a common failing
of many performers who move from theater to cabaret. Thus he works
far too hard, and pushes just a little too much. Also, the show was
structured around an autobiography, and included just a little more
information than necessary - another common failing in a debut performance.
Mr. Davis can be a delightful addition to the NYC cabaret scene if
he would tone back his act just a bit, and trim some of the clearly
too personal stuff from his patter.
What can I say about Jenifer
Kruskamp that I haven't said before? She did a one-time show at DON'T
TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/)
the night before the MAC Award's show (where she was outstanding),
and perhaps this was her way to "warm up" for her big solo. But Jenifer,
you are spectacular, magnificent, glorious, fantastic, outstanding,
amazing - I've run out of words! Please, don't make us wait too long
for a repeat of this show. There was no song list, there was no press
kit, and I was too transfixed to take notes. Jenifer, please do this
show again - and again - and again! I'll be there again - and again
- and again!
Every time I get the weekend
blues I call my friend Miguel and head to REGENTS (317 East 53rd Street,
NYC - 212-593-3091 - http://www.RegentsClub.com)
for Sunday brunch. Having a post-MAC Award letdown, we were there
this past Sunday for "something completely different," namely an Opera
Brunch. Heather Connolly is usually heard on the opera/concert stage,
but she presented a marvelous show, along with John McMahon (accompanist
and commentary). My dad was a big opera fan and we had the opera on
the radio at home every Saturday afternoon when I was a kid. And when
my mom couldn't make it, he would take me along to THE MET (the old
opera house mid-town), where I was perhaps more dazzled by the staging
than the music. This brunch show was charming and Ms. Connolly was
delightful. And the food is plentiful and tasty - there is no cover
charge. Actually, this is the first time I have had the setting of
the song "Glitter and be Gay" explained - quite graphically by Mr.
McMahon. As one of the men seated at a table of 10 other men exclaimed:
"Lucky girl!" To which Ms. Connelly replied: "I'll do the glitter,
you do the gay!"
They are cute, they are
young, and they sing gloriously. But they're not quite ready for a
formal review. I'm speaking of a duo of 19-year-olds who were too
young to drink, but certainly not too young to sing at DON'T TELL
MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/)
a few Saturdays back. Their names are Seth Sikes and Eric Heusinger.
It was their cabaret debut, and they were obviously nervous when they
opened their show "Equally Suited." The room was packed with friends
and family, and the lads gave their all. New to cabaret (as is their
director Ryan J. Davis) the show was more concert style than cabaret
style. But there was a glimmer of a great show to come when they finally
loosened up while singing "I Can Do Anything Better Than You." In
fact, if they had opened with this song, and then continued with the
various merits of opera versus musical theater, they could have used
the same song list, but it would be delightful cabaret. Come on back,
boys. You have the ingredients, now it needs to be shaped.
There will be more show
reports in next Thursday's newsletter.

How do you get an item
posted in the BREAKING NEWS section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/)?
Just e-mail me a press release of at least four paragraphs, giving
the complete information on your show, CD release or other cabaret
related event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available. But
please send me complete information - and do not merely send a copy
of your flier. By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from
the press releases I receive before using the item on my website or
in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the four
or more paragraphs.
BREAKING NEWS ITEM
This just in: 2003 MAC
Nominee John Flynn will be doing his BACK STAGE Bistro Award winning
show "Dances With Pitchforks" again for one night only at CAROLINES
COMEDY CLUB (1626 Broadway, NYC - 1-212-757-4100) on Monday May 5th
at 9:30 pm. It's only a $3 cover plus a 2-drink minimum. For more
details check out http://www.threedollarbillproductions.com/.
This is the show that relates in story and song John's experiences
as a chorus boy in the PAPERMILL PLAYHOUSE production of GYPSY starring
Betty Buckley (with Deborah Boone). Funny, funny, funny and only three
bucks! Let's fill the room for this lad, since I hear a few TV casting
scouts will be attending the show.
DON'T OVERLOOK THIS OPPORTUNITY
TO PROMOTE YOUR WEBSITE!
Cabaret performers can
also request a link to their website on the Performers Links pages
on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website - you don't need to be a member.
You should check this section just to make sure your name is listed
and properly linked. See http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/CabaretLinksIndex.shtml
While there, see if there
is another category on the page that you should be linked through
as well - Songwriter, Director, Videographer, etc. You do not have
to be a member to have a link on these pages. Please tell your friends
about this section of the website - eventually we hope it will become
sort of a "Cabaret Yellow Pages" section where you can find hundreds
of resources in putting together your show or recording your CD.
Remember, you need a website
to be linked. An e-mail address is not sufficient.
APRIL FOOL JOKE A PREDICTION?
In the 2001 April Fool
issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE I made a joke that a new club would
be opening on West 46th Street in the site occupied by St. Clement's
Church. Well, who knew? Caroline Montgomery writes:
"After a year of performing
outside of New York City, I am finally bringing a show home! I can't
wait. Here's the scoop:
"Opening night is Monday,
April 28th at the ST. CLEMENTS THEATER (423 West 46th Street, NYC
- 212-246-7277 Ext. 29), a terrific little 120 seater right off Broadway.
The show is called "Reveille," with musical direction by Rick Leonard.
Tickets are $15 ($10 for seniors and kids under 12). There's no minimum,
but you can purchase a soft or hard beverage for $2-$3 at the concession
booth. The show will run for 6 consecutive Mondays, through June 2nd."
By the way, one more time,
I am not moving to Boston - I still get letters from folks who heard
that rumor, a product of this year's APRIL FOOLS DAY issue.
If you appreciate what
we are doing, and would like to see CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE not simply
continue, but also grow, please consider becoming a member this week.
Our new membership year starts on July 6th, but we will begin accepting
early membership contributions for the 2003-2004 year in just a few
days. For information on becoming a contributing member of CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE, check at http://svhamstra.com/Membership.shtml
or else just send me a note at membership@svhamstra.com
with the single word "membership" in the subject line, and I'll send
all the details. You can even send your donation by credit card via

As always, I have so much
more to tell you, and no more time or space. Another issue goes out
on Monday, the 28th.
And that is just about
the way it was.
