CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE #030406 - Part 1 - Monday, April 28, 2003
Since 1990 Your First, Best, and Only Complete Source of Cabaret News

If it's anything to do with cabaret, you'll probably read it here first!

This is a Monday Issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE - testing a new twice-a-week issue, at least until the normal slow-down of cabaret in the summer months, when many rooms, especially the major ones, go dark. The Monday issue will include the regular Major Rooms listings for around the world, and will also give information on all the banner ads running on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/). The mid-week issue will concentrate more on news, breaking stories and notes and mini-reviews of shows seen - things I have not had space for in our once-a-week issues. I look forward to receiving your comments and suggestions on this new system.

I spent a good deal of Sunday morning adding new photos to the MAC Award Photo Report pages - thanks to contributing photographers Henri Van Ryn, Maryann Lopinto and John McMahon - take a look. I also added a number of new "Breaking News" items - I will give a full list of added items in the second half of this issue later this week. I spent a good part of Sunday afternoon writing most of this newsletter, since it was forecast that today would be fantastic - lots of sunshine, temperatures in the mid-70s and a great day to get outdoors. If you want to check the weather here in lovely Long Island City, there is a "weather bug" right on my breaking news page - near the bottom. You can also take a look, during daylight hours anyway, using the WebCam page.

HERE WE GO AGAIN DEPARTMENT

Jay Baik, the publisher and editor has notified Cabaret Reviewer David Hurst at SHOW BUSINESS that the NYC Live (Cabaret) and CD reviews will now be run every other week instead of weekly. Unfortunately, this means David will only be able to cover half as much as in the past. Considering that when David started writing the column 2 1/2 years ago, he was given almost 1500 words a week, which was subsequently cut to only 700 words. Now, it's 700 words every other week! This is certainly distressing news in terms of cabaret coverage in NYC.

David's column will not appear in this week's issue (usually on the newsstands on Tuesday but will appear next week instead.

You might want to let them know what you think of this idea by sending a note to editor@showbusinessweekly.com. We have to make a lot of noise - folks seem to forget that there are thousands of cabaret fans out here!

CONGRATULATIONS ARE IN ORDER

Congratulations to songwriter Karen Benedetto. One of her songs, "The Call," was chosen from hundreds of entries, it has been given the honor of being selected as a Finalist in the TIPPERARY INTERNATIONAL SONG OF PEACE CONTEST. The song is a timeless anthem of healing and unity written in response to 9/11. Scott Coulter accompanied Karen and her partner, Jean to Ireland, and performed the piece in the Grand Final on April 26th. CABARET BULLETINS AVAILABLE

From time to time I receive information about show cancellations, last-minute cast changes, or other items of interest to cabaret lovers specific to a single geographical location. Rather then send out a general bulletin to the entire 2,500 subscribers, I am setting up a process to target subscribers that might have an interest in these items.

The bulletins will be short, and may include a link to a longer item on the website. Already over 150 interested folks have signed up for this FREE service from CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE. Copies of bulletins sent so far are posted on the Cabaret Hotline Online Website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/) in the ARCHIVES section.

This special NYC e-mailing list is a 2-month test. If you would like to be a part of this list, please follow the instructions below. The subscription will be automatic. You will receive confirmation. If I feel it is successful, I will extend the program to other areas (BOSTON - CHICAGO - WEST COAST, etc.). At some point during the test period I will be asking those on the list for feedback, suggestions and comments.

It is just after 9:00 am and I promised myself a day off - and a "walk in the sunshine." It has been a cold & snowy winter, and a chilly & damp early spring. But from my window I can see that the dogwood trees are in full bloom, the forsythia at the corner is bursting with color, crocuses, daffodils and tulips are dotting the gardens next door, and the park across the street is already active with folks enjoying the morning air. I am out of here!

If you appreciate what I'm doing, and would like to see CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE not just continue, but also grow, please consider becoming a member this week. For information on becoming a contributing member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, check at http://svhamstra.com/Membership.shtml or else just send me a note at membership@svhamstra.com with the single word "membership" in the subject line, and I'll send all the details. You can even send your donation by credit card via PayPal - http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/PayPalPayment.shtml

And that is just about the way it was.

STU
