CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
#030406 - Part 2 - Thursday, May 1, 2003
Since 1990 Your First, Best, and Only Complete Source of Cabaret News
If it's anything to do
with cabaret, you'll probably read it here first!
This is the MID-WEEK Issue
of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, part two of the issue we sent out on Monday.
We are testing a new twice-a-week issue, at least until the normal
slow-down of cabaret in the summer months, when many rooms, especially
the major ones, go dark. The MONDAY issue included the regular "Major
Rooms" listings for cabarets around the world, and also has information
on all the banner ads running on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website
(http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/).
This MID-WEEK issue will concentrate more on news, breaking stories
and notes on shows seen - things we have not had space for in our
once-a-week issues. We look forward to receiving your comments and
suggestions on this new system.
This may be a shorter
issue than originally planned - after a very cold and snowy winter,
and a rainy and chilly early spring, we had three fantastically beautiful,
sunny, pleasant days here in NYC and I simply fell victim to the temptation
to spend some time strolling around my neighborhood, and window shopping
at the several shopping areas here in Astoria and Long Island City.
So I didn't get a chance to start this issue until this morning.
I can't believe I had
been living at my new address for six months already, and never really
spent time getting to learn the wealth of interesting places nearby
until this week! But then again, I lived in mid-Manhattan for a half-dozen
years before visiting the INTREPID aircraft carrier, which was located
just three blocks away - at the end of the very street I lived on!
But now the weather prediction
for today, tomorrow and Sunday is more rain. Great weather for writing!
It is now (as I write this paragraph) 6:30 am and the sky is cloud-covered,
with a bit of drizzle in the air. You can see the what the weather
is like here, in my back yard, on the web cam on my website (daylight
hours only), along with a weather report courtesy of the Weather Channel,
at http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/webcam.shtml.
By the way, several performers
and publicists continue to send mail to my old address (how many times
have I mentioned this!) and now the post office is getting lazy and
accumulates the mail and forwards it in a bunch to the proper address
- most of which I have to toss in the waste basket since it is hopelessly
out of date. I don't know how much longer mail will be forwarded but
why waste postage? My proper official mailing address (in use for
over two years!) is as follows:
Stu Hamstra
CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
676A Ninth Avenue #120
New York, NY 10036
This address is published
on about 100 pages on my website (every index page) and appears at
the bottom of every issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE. If you are still
using the old one, you have obviously not been paying attention. Please
contact the person in charge of your mailing list and make sure you
delete the old one (some folks actually send stuff to both!). Save
yourself money, and save me the irritation.
COMING SOON: Cabaret Horoscopes
on CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE - just in fun, but each week we will give
a special cabaret prediction especially for your astrological sign.
This will be an added feature, similar to the "Thought to Ponder" and
"You Know You Are Getting Old When" items on my BREAKING NEWS page.
Another feature on the
CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/)
that is often overlooked is the "Tips & FAQs" section - near the bottom
of the list of buttons on the left column. So many time folks ask
me a question about cabaret, not realizing that the answer is there.
Check it out sometime.

TIME OUT NY WATCH - WEEK FIVE
This week's issue of TIME
OUT NY continues their record of ignoring the MAC and cabaret community!
No cabaret item in the "Music Section" articles, no cabaret personality
in the photos, no cabaret listing in "The Best of the Rest," no cabaret
CDs reviewed or reported. OK, there is a short article on Bobby Short
in the front of the book, but this is no where near the type of cabaret
coverage that was formerly given cabaret when it had a section of
its own in the magazine.
You might want to send
another note to TIME OUT with your thoughts. Even if you sent one
already. Editor-in-Chief Joe Angio claims he reads them all. He might
eventually get the message. I again list some addresses for your convenience:

LOU'S PLACE TO OPEN IN JUNE
WITH 4-A-WEEK SHOWS
Last week we reported
on a new cabaret venue called THE SUPPER CLUB AT SHORAH'S. This venture
was a 6-week, Friday night series of performances beginning April
25th through May 30th. The supper club shows are packaged with a dinner
and priced at $89.00 per couple or $45.00 per individual. Show-only
tickets are $25.00.
In June the concept will
be branded LOU'S PLACE AT SHORAH'S (27 Foster Street, Worcester, MA
- 508-797-0007) and will feature one performer, each week, for a 4-day
run scheduled Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights and Sunday afternoons.
It will open on June 19th through 22nd with IRNE Award Winner, Valerie
Sneade.
This new venture is a
product of a partnership between Kevian Mizrahi, owner of Shorah's
Ristorante and Ida Zecco, veteran performer and President of IdaCo,
producer of cabaret productions. Zecco has long been looking for a
home to stage cabaret on a regular basis and Mizrahi recently expanded
his restaurant into neighboring space to accommodate this venture.
LOU'S PLACE AT SHORAH'S
will host Boston performers such as Independent Reviewers of New England
(IRNE) Award winners, Valerie Sneade, John O'Neil and Dane Vannatter
as well as Mary Callanan, Brian De Lorenzo, Sarah deLima, Kent French,
Ben Sears and Brad Conner, Lyn Jackson and Mike Palter to name a few.
Also on the 2003 roster, from New York City, are Manhattan Association
of Cabaret (MAC) Award winners Julie Reyburn and Sue Matsuki as well
as Tim Sullivan, Marcus Simeone, Jennifer Pace.
There will be a direct
mail brochure of scheduled events every 3 months. First mailing to
be distributed in mid-May. A website is currently being developed
and is also expected to be available by the end of May. LOU'S PLACE
AT SHORAH'S website will include, full schedule of events, reservation
purchase, directions, contacts, artist links, and more.
There is a more complete
story, with photo, in the "Breaking News" section of the CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/).
SHOWS SEEN
One of the reasons why
I went to two issues of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE per week (at least
on a test basis) is that the single issues were getting so filled
with listings stuff, I had no room to mention shows seen and other
items of interest. So, here is some information on shows I've seen
the past few weeks that bear special mention. I am hoping to get reports
on shows seen all the way back to the end of March.
Just a little reminder:
I comment on these shows as honestly as I can - with the hopes that
cabaret artists will do their best, not to please me, but to forward
the art of cabaret. That's been my goal in just about every article,
story or newsletter written over these past 13 years. That's my agenda
- not to see how many friends I can make, not to see how cleverly
I can write, not to promote a particular artist at the expense of
another. Anyone who performs in this very difficult art form I count
as a friend. I write what I feel, about the efforts of people I love.
At the end of March I
made two trips to Boston - the first to attend the SECOND ANNUAL BOSTON
CABARET FESTIVAL on March 29th, and then returned to Beantown on the
2nd of April for two more shows. The Festival show will be reported
on in a larger article on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/).
The first Boston cabaret
show, seen on the 2nd, was "At the Movies" at SCULLERS JAZZ CLUB (400
Soldiers Field Road, Allston, MA - 617-562-4111 - http://www.scullersjazz.com/),
a CD release event that starred the "At The Movies" quartet made up
of Will McMillan, Brian Patton, Michael Ricca, and Nina Vansuch. The
CD (and the show) included songs from their highly acclaimed revues:
"Music of the 1950s & 60s" and "Fully Animated" plus a few new offerings,
probably to be included on their next CD. It was a light-hearted,
fun-filled revue made up of songs from movie musicals and animated
cartoons. The audience at SCULLERS is seated on three sides of the
stage, and this foursome made sure that everyone had a good seat -
and a lot of fun. The vocal arrangements were amazing, and the show
even included choreography - made just a little difficult at times
by the microphone cords and stands. This group sells out every show
- wherever they appear. Their next outing is at the 2003 PROVINCETOWN
CABARETFEST. If you can't hear them live, get that CD!
On April 3rd, I headed
to REGATTABAR in the Charles Hotel (One Bennett Street, Cambridge,
MA - 617-876-777 - http://www.regattabar.com)
for Jim Porcella and Ida Zecco and an exciting evening of music and
nostalgia. With their six piece band, led by music director and arranger
Jim Rice, this show was a tribute to the music of Louis Prima and
Keely Smith. They were backed by a band that included some of Boston's
finest: Jim Rice on piano, Arnie Krakowsky on saxophone, Dick Lowell
on trumpet, Artie Montinaro on trombone, Gary Johnson on drums, and
Mark Carlsen on bass. It was a 90-minute show of memories and fun,
with just a 15-minute break to allow us all to catch our breath. It
was difficult to keep from "singing along" with such old-time favorites
as "Night and Day," "Oh! Marie," "That Old Black Magic," "Bei Mir
Bist Du Schon" and many, many more - all done to perfection. Imagine
a song list that also included "Sheik of Araby" and "I Ain't Got Nobody"
and you will know why the audience was swooning with every tune! While
not an impersonation (although Mr. Porcella often sounds so much like
Prima you get goose-bumps), the show totally captured the spirit of
that famous duo of yore, including the madcap antics of Prima and
the poker-faced style of Smith. Delightful fun that was well worth
the trip!
Last year I was delighted
with the new crop of vocalists who made their debuts - but found myself
disappointed when several great singers with great vocals made bad
choices in material or made poor presentations. This year a debut
artist set a standard that others in this category will find it hard
to live up to. Arkansas native Rob Sutton made his debut at DON'T
TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/)
in a show called "Taking the Wheel," with the inimitable Steven Ray
Watkins as musical director and Lennie Watts as director. The result
was nearly perfection - just the right balance between song and story.
The show made use of many Broadway show tunes to illustrate Mr. Sutton's
story of leaving the past behind and taking control of his own life,
and the presentation was delightful. I even enjoyed the rather funny
Manilow medley performed near the end of the show! Mr. Sutton performed
only two shows, and I am certain that he will be returning soon with
additional performances. Watch the listings, because this is a show
you will want to catch.
Natalie Douglas just finished
a run at THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC -
1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/)
that proved once again that you can't keep a good gal down. Ms. Douglas
has had more than her share of medical problems over the past several
months, but she certainly was not off the mark in this show that featured
Mark Hartman as musical director, with Tony LaVorgna on alto sax and
Steve Doyle on bass. Natalie picked up another MAC Award midway through
this run, and if her shows maintain the quality and professionalism
of this one, I predict many more awards in her future. The song list
was so well structured, the arrangements so appropriate and the vocals
so pure, we were at the last song almost before I realized it! And
the last song had me in tears. Ms. Douglas chose "His Eye Is On The
Sparrow," which as everyone knows is one of my favorites, and has
become sort of my motto in the past several years. By the way, I make
another admission: I really don't like the saxophone. But in the hands
of Mr. LaVorgna, I forgot my prejudices - it was just the right touch
for this heavenly show.
I eagerly awaited John
De Palma's new show - his first in over a year. Mr. De Palma is blessed
with one of the most incredibly listenable voices in cabaret - or
anywhere for that matter - and his award-winning CD is indeed a favorite
as well. So I made a reservation for his opening-night show at DON'T
TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/),
expecting to leave the room floating on air. It was not to be. The
vocals were as beautiful as ever, but what was this he was singing?
It was as though he took every beautiful thing from his first show
and turned it on its head! I am delighted when a singer chooses to
present new songs and new songwriters to his song list. But, with
just a few exceptions, this list seemed to be chosen to irritate rather
than entertain. Organized into 2 to 4-song medleys, with little reason
and even less rhyme. Musical direction was by Michael Holland and
direction by Karen Mack, with Debbie Magidson and Jerry Smith singing
back-up vocals, talented people all. It had all the ingredients for
a great, entertaining and exciting show. Somehow the recipe seemed
to have been misplaced.
I had planned to write
a few more show reports, but time is fleeting, and I have to get back
to working on the website. It is the first of the month, and there's
a lot of "housekeeping" to do as the month flips. And several "breaking
news" items have arrived since I started this issue, and need to be
added to the website.
There will be more show
reports in the next Mid-Week issue of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE newsletter.

How do you get an item
posted in the BREAKING NEWS section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/)?
Just e-mail me a press release of at least four paragraphs, giving
the complete information on your show, CD release or other cabaret
related event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available. But
please send me complete information - and do not merely send a copy
of your flier. By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from
the press releases I receive before using the item on my website or
in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the four
or more paragraphs.
DON'T OVERLOOK THIS OPPORTUNITY
TO PROMOTE YOUR WEBSITE!
Cabaret performers can
also request a link to their website on the Performers Links pages
on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website - you don't need to be a member.
You should check this section just to make sure your name is listed
and properly linked. See http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/CabaretLinksIndex.shtml
While there, see if there
is another category on the page that you should be linked through
as well - Songwriter, Director, Videographer, etc. You do not have
to be a member to have a link on these pages. Please tell your friends
about this section of the website - eventually we hope it will become
sort of a "Cabaret Yellow Pages" section where you can find hundreds
of resources in putting together your show or recording your CD.
Remember, you need a website
to be linked. An e-mail address is not sufficient.
If you appreciate what
we are doing, and would like to see CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE not simply
continue, but also grow, please consider becoming a member this week.
Our new membership year starts on July 6th, but we have begun accepting
early membership contributions for the 2003-2004 year. If you join
now, you get 14 months of benefits for the cost of 12! Five folks
have already signed up for 2003-2004.

have made it a rule lately to get the newsletters out as early as
possible so that subscribers will have them before they go to work
(the performer subscribers) or when they get home from work (the audience
subscribers). Anyway, I have been at this computer since dawn, and

4th.
