CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE #030501
- Part 1 - Monday, May 5, 2003
Since 1990 Your First, Best, and Only Complete Source of Cabaret News
If it's anything to do
with cabaret, you'll probably read it here first!
This is a Monday Issue
of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE - testing a new twice-a-week issue, at least
until the normal slow-down of cabaret in the summer months, when many
rooms, especially the major ones, go dark. The Monday issue will include
the regular Major Rooms listings for around the world, and will also
give information on all the banner ads running on the CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/).
The mid-week issue will concentrate more on news, breaking stories
and notes and mini-reviews of shows seen - things I have not had space
for in our once-a-week issues. I look forward to receiving your comments
and suggestions on this new system.
It is very gratifying
to see the sharp increase in page visits at the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/)
over the past few weeks! I guess a good bit of the credit goes to
the great photos of the MAC Awards show contributed by Henri Van Ryn,
Maryann Lopinto and John McMahon. I actually have about 25 more to
add - I try to add about 5 or 6 each day.
I am just a bit irritated
this morning, since I awoke to find nearly 200 e-mails that can only
politely be called "spam." I have a better word, that also starts
with an "s" but this is a family newsletter. Just a note to folks
writing to me - if your e-mail address is not in my "subscriber" list,
my e-mail program automatically dumps it into a separate "mailbox"
which I check once or twice a day and try to locate any valid (not
lurid) messages for reading - the rest get deleted. Occasionally,
subscribers send me a note from an address other than their "subscriber"
address, so those notes are at risk of not being read, especially
if the subject line suggests a way I can enlarge one of my body parts,
or enhance my love life, or a new credit card available at 0% interest.
GOOD NEWS FOR A CHANGE, DEPT.
There is a strong buzz
around town of two new cabaret clubs opening in NYC - one almost immediately,
the other later this year. Actually, I have a lot of facts, but am
"sworn to secrecy." Stay tuned, folks - it looks like there is some
great cabaret news to come - after a rather dismal spate of news over
the first few months of 2003!
YOU KNOW YOU'RE GETTING OLDER
WHEN ...
When I lived in mid-town
Manhattan, and it was "Fleet Week," when the harbor was filled with
Navy vessels and the streets teeming with sailors in white and soldiers
in brown, I was always amazed to discover how young these "defenders
of freedom" actually were! They all seemed to be 15-year-olds, and
honestly, I was wondering what would actually happen if they were
asked to go to battle. Well, it appears that my fears were unfounded.
Time and again over the past month or so, we witnessed the bravery
(combined with fine training) of these "kids." What does this have
to do with cabaret? Well, these young heros have taught me a lesson:
you don't have to be over 30 to be great! So let's quit all the moaning
and complaining about the "youngsters" who have been dazzling the
cabaret and jazz audiences lately. I finally had a chance to listen
to a new recording by one of these "kids" the other day, and believe
me, I was impressed. A big BRAVO to people of all ages - and a special
"pat on the back" to the younger folks, both those who make our lives
safer and those who make life more entertaining!
TOO MANY CABARET SHOWS? WHO
CAN BELIEVE IT!
Sometimes a cabaret lover
here in NYC is faces with simply too many choices - something folks
in other parts of the world of cabaret may not see quite as often
as we see here. For example, tonight I have the following choices
- and it is almost impossible for me to make a decision, so I am going
to wait until the last minute to see where I end up! (Details on many
of these shows can be found in other parts of this issue.)
Lina Koutrakos and her
band are performing at FEZ Under TIME CAFE (380 Lafayette Street,
NYC - 1-212-533-7000) at 8:00 & 10:00 pm.
John Flynn is at CAROLINES
COMEDY CLUB (1626 Broadway, NYC - 1-212-757-4100) at 9:30 pm.
Michael McAssey is at
REGENTS (317 East 53rd Street, NYC - 212-593-3091 - http://www.RegentsClub.com)
at 8:00 pm.
Marcus Simeone is at DANNY'S
SKYLIGHT ROOM (342 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-265-8133 - http://www.dannysgrandseapalace.com/)
at 9:00 pm.
Carolyn Montgomery is
at ST. CLEMENTS THEATER (423 West 46th Street, NYC - 212-246-7277
Ext. 29) at 8:00 pm.
Richard Skipper is at
THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438
- http://www.theduplex.com/)
at 9:00 pm.
Sally Morgan debuts at
DANNY'S SKYLIGHT ROOM (342 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-265-8133
- http://www.dannysgrandseapalace.com/)
at 7:00 pm.
All of these folks I count
as personal friends - well nearly all. Sally Morgan always ends up
either sitting next to me at a show, or standing in line in front
of me waiting for a room to open, or outside of a club after a show,
talking to someone else I know. She's doing the smart thing as a cabaret
newcomer - she's seeing as many cabaret shows as she can.
I'll report on my decision
in the MID-WEEK issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE.
COMING SOON ON THE CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE WEBSITE
Cabaret Horoscopes on
CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE - just in fun, but each week we will give a
special cabaret prediction especially for your astrological sign.
This will be an added feature, similar to the "Thought to Ponder"
and "You Know You Are Getting Old When" items on my BREAKING NEWS
page.
ITEM OF NOTE
You have two chances to
catch Mr. Ruby Rims before he leaves for Ogunquit, Maine on the 19th
for his usual summer gig. Ruby will be performing the Sunday Brunch
shows at REGENTS (317 East 53rd Street, NYC - 212-593-3091 - http://www.RegentsClub.com)
on the 11th & 18th - showtime is 2:00 pm, brunch is served starting
around 12:30 pm. These fabulous brunch shows have been selling out
by mid-week lately, so make sure you have a reservation or you may
be turned away. Not only is the food great here, but the prices are
most reasonable and there is no cover charge! Ruby helped me find
an apartment one time many years ago - I lived just upstairs from
him for a few years - he still complains about the noise. I could
tell a lot of stories about those years!
WHY ADVERTISE ON CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE ?
One of the most difficult
things for a new performer to do is expanding a following from just
family and friends. The best way to do this is to get your name seen
and recognized by as many folks as possible, and there is no better
(and no cheaper) way to do this than a banner ad on CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE. Over 6,000 quality, cabaret-loving folks visit our website
each day - and they look at on average of 6 or 7 pages each. Banner
ads are displayed at random in two places on nearly all 1,800+ pages.
This means your ad could be seen as many as 3,000 times each day,
21,000 times each week!
In addition, those running
banners get mentioned every week in the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE e-mail
newsletter (current circulation nearly 2,500) as long as the banner
is running. That means nearly 5,000 times more that folks are exposed
to your name. Plus, your advertising dollars will help continue to
promote the art of cabaret on the website, publish the e-mail newsletter,
and make visits to various cabaret events and performances locally
and around the country.
BANNER AD spaces on the
CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website ARE selling out fast for the month
of May. Keep in mind that I limit the ads to 20 banners per week,
so if you plan to order a banner, reserve your banner space as soon
as possible.
For information on banner
ads, check out the banner information page on the CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/BannerHere.shtml),
or simply send me a note at banners@svhamstra.com
with the single word "Banner" in the subject line and I'll send all
the details.

UPDATE ON SHOWS ORIGINALLY
SCHEDULED FOR JUDY'S CHELSEA
With the sudden closing
of JUDY'S CHELSEA in March, several performers with shows scheduled
for the room in the months of April & May had to find new venues and
dates for their presentations - many after they had sent out expensive
mailings. CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE is listing these shows here each
week, through the end of May, as I receive information.
San Francisco's Shawn
Ryan was booked for shows in June at the now-closed JUDY'S CHELSEA,
so he has been booked at THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher
Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/)
on Mondays, June 2nd & 9th at 9:00 pm. This will be his New York Cabaret
Debut. Shawn recently completed a very successful "Month of Sundays"
in April at San Francisco's PLUSH ROOM. There is a $15 cover, 2-drink
minimum.
Barbara Lea, who was scheduled
to perform at JUDY'S CHELSEA in April, will be performing instead
at CHEZ SUZETTE (675B Ninth Avenue, NYC - 1-212-974-9002 - http://www.chezsuzettenyc.com/)
on Friday, May 16th and Friday, June 20th - both dates with sets at
8:30 and 10:15 pm. No cover; $15 food/drink minimum. For more information,
see http://www.barbaralea.com/.
Another show, originally
scheduled for JUDY'S CHELSEA has found a new home. After a year and
half of playing the Legendary Judy Garland in Charles Tolliver's play
"Judy and Me," Peter Mac is taking to the stage for two nights to
perform in Peter Mac "Is a Friend of Judy's" at REGENTS (317 East
53rd Street, NYC - 212-593-3091) on Tuesdays, May 20th & 27th at 8:30
pm. In this show, Mac plays "the other side of the rainbow," celebrating
Garlands musical style and great wit. There is a $10 cover, $12 food/drink
minimum.
Lucille Carr-Kaffashan's
show originally scheduled for JUDY'S CHELSEA in April, will now be
performed at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788
- http://www.donttellmama.com/)
on Wednesday, May 14th at 6:00 pm, Saturday, May 24th at 4:30 pm and
Friday, May 30th at 8:30 pm. Lucille will also present the show at
THE CABARET at Odette's (South River Road, New Hope, PA - 215-862-3000
- http://www.odettes.com/)
on Friday & Saturday, June 6th & 7th at 8:00 pm.
Clark Warren will perform
his show, also originally scheduled for JUDY'S CHELSEA, at DANNY'S
SKYLIGHT ROOM (342 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-265-8133 - http://www.dannysgrandseapalace.com/)
on Thursdays in July, the 10th, 17th and 24th at 7:00 pm. Clark will
have as a special guest Pamela Palmieri on July 17th & 24th.
If your show was originally
booked at JUDY'S CHELSEA, please let me know as soon as possible if/where/when
it has been re-booked so I can let folks know here.

CABARET BULLETINS AVAILABLE
From time to time I receive
information about show cancellations, last-minute cast changes, or
other items of interest to cabaret lovers specific to a single geographical
location. Rather then send out a general bulletin to the entire 2,500
subscribers, I am setting up a process to target subscribers that
might have an interest in these items.
The bulletins will be
short, and may include a link to a longer item on the website. Already
over 150 interested folks have signed up for this FREE service from
CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE. Copies of bulletins sent so far are posted
on the Cabaret Hotline Online Website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/)
in the ARCHIVES section.
This special NYC e-mailing
list is a 2-month test. If you would like to be a part of this list,
please follow the instructions below. The subscription will be automatic.
You will receive confirmation. If I feel it is successful, I will
extend the program to other areas (BOSTON - CHICAGO - WEST COAST,
etc.). At some point during the test period I will be asking those
on the list for feedback, suggestions and comments.

Have some extra CDs you
want to pass along? I still have to send out about 20 free CDs to
folks who joined CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE in the 2002-2003 membership
year, and now the 2003-2004 membership year is quickly approaching
(anyone joining after May 6th is put into the new year, which officially
starts on July 6th). I am looking for CABARET CDs - unused - so if
you have some you would like to contribute, please send them to CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE, 676A Ninth Avenue #120, New York, NY 10036. This address
is a MAILBOXES, ETC. store, and you can drop them off there between
8:00 am and 7:00 pm on weekdays and between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm on
Saturdays (closed on Sundays).
Thank you to Wendy Coates,
DC Anderson and Michael Vaccaro for their CD donations this past week!
Their CDs will be posted on the special
COMING NEXT ISSUE
I plan to include a rundown
of the activities at CABARETFEST! (http://www.cabaretfest.com/)
in Provincetown that starts on the 15th, plus several more reports/reviews
on "Shows Seen." I continue to look for folks who wish to contribute
reviews and reports for the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/)
- I am looking for non-performers (or their spouses), since I feel
there is a conflict of interest issue when performers review shows
of other performers. By the way, note the word "contribute." CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE operates "on a shoestring" and as much as I would like
to, right now I am still unable to afford to pay our writers.
If you appreciate what
I'm doing, and would like to see CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE not just continue,
but also grow, please consider becoming a member this week. For information
on becoming a contributing member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, check

or else just send me a note at membership@svhamstra.com
with the single word "membership" in the subject line, and I'll send
all the details. You can even send your donation by credit card via

the way it was.
