CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
#030501 - Part 2 - Thursday, May 8, 2003
Since 1990 Your First, Best, and Only Complete Source of Cabaret
News
If it's anything to do
with cabaret, you'll probably read it here first!
This is the MID-WEEK CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE, part two of the issue we sent out on Monday. We are
testing a new twice-a-week issue, at least until the normal slow-down
of cabaret in the summer months, when many rooms, especially the major
ones, go dark. The MONDAY issue included the regular "Major Rooms"
listings for cabarets around the world, and also has information on
all the banner ads running on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/).
This MID-WEEK issue will concentrate more on news, breaking stories
and notes on shows seen - things we have not had space for in our
once-a-week issues. We look forward to receiving your comments and
suggestions on this new system.
It is a cool, rainy morning,
a perfect time to write a newsletter! Yesterday it got to nearly 80
degrees (f) here, and I actually spent last evening not in a cabaret
room, but in a huge shopping center here in Queens looking for an
air conditioner! But today, no problem. Temperatures are not expected
to exceed 65! As they say, if you don't like the weather in NYC, just
wait an hour or so.
THIS JUST RECEIVED - TICKETS
STILL AVAILABLE
Polly Bergen, Betty Buckley,
Liz Callaway, Barbara Carroll and songwriters Rupert Holmes and John
Bucchino will join Ann Hampton Callaway during her "Weekend with Ann
Hampton Callaway" concerts May 8th, 9th and 10th at Lincoln Center's
award-winning AMERICAN SONGBOOK series, at the STANLEY H. KAPLAN PENTHOUSE
(165 West 65 Street, NYC - 212-721-6500),
The weekend begins May
8th at 8:00 pm with a "Master Class" conducted by Ms. Callaway, during
which she will coach eight fledgling (and not-so-fledgling) singers
in the art of performance, and on May 9th at 8:00 pm, "Request Night,"
will find the cabaret star performing songs voted on in advance by
the SONGBOOK audience. The trio of concerts will conclude May 10th
at 8:00 pm with "The Callaway Hour," an hour of chat and song reminiscent
of TV variety shows of days gone by with the guest list above.
We have just added a more
detailed item in the BREAKING NEWS section of the CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/). For some reason,
we didn't receive a release on this show until today!
PROVINCETOWN CABARETFEST NEXT
WEEK
I have been on-line this
morning to make travel reservations to my annual visit to CABARETFEST!
in Provincetown, MA - which starts on Thursday, May 15th and runs
through Sunday night, the 18th. This 4-day festival features some
of the best Boston & NYC cabaret performers, as well as Master Classes,
seminars and discussions. Provincetown is just beginning to "wake
up" after it's winter rest, and its a great chance to visit the cape
before the very busy tourist season that begins after Memorial Day.
Eileen Fulton is the star performer this year, with a show on Saturday,
the 17th at 8:00 pm at the CROWN & ANCHOR (247 Commercial Street,
Provincetown, MA - 508-487-1430 - http://www.onlyatthecrown.com/).
Ms. Fulton is one of the most delightful ladies in cabaret. I've seen
her perform several times, and her charm and love just shines in every
show! If you can't make it to Provincetown, Ms. Fulton has a show
this week Friday at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788
- http://www.donttellmama.com/)
at 8:00 pm and regularly performs at THE CABARET at Odette's (South
River Road, New Hope, PA - 215-862-3000 - http://www.odettes.com/).
But the event kicks off
on Thursday, at ESTHER'S (86 Commercial Street Provincetown, MA -
508-487-7555 - http://www.estherlives.com/)
at 8:00 pm when Patricia Fitzpatrick performs her show "Class" featuring
Michael Van Belle & Christopher Fitzpatrick. Ms. Fitzpatrick also
happens to be the Tourism Director of Provincetown, so after the show
you can get all the tips of what's hot in town for the weekend. Pat
recently did a show at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC
- 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/)
and is working with Sidney Myer for additional dates.
Then the amazing "Lovely
Show" moves into the CROWN & ANCHOR (247 Commercial Street, Provincetown,
MA - 508-487-1430 - http://www.onlyatthecrown.com/)
at 10:00 pm featuring the hysterical duo of Kelly Briggs & Jerry Christakos.
This show recently won a NYC Nightlife Award, and was a 2003 MAC Award
Nominee. The show has played at just about every club in the NYC area,
including ODETTE'S, DON'T TELL MAMA, JUDY'S, THE DUPLEX, REGENTS,
and is getting set for a show at THE BACK ROOM AT DILLON'S (245 West
54th Street, NYC - Resv: 1-212-212-946-5416) on the 16th at 11:30
pm and at THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC -
1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/)
on the 30th. See http://www.areyoulovely.com/
for more information.
The MAC Award-winning
Sue Matsuki performs at CROWN & ANCHOR (247 Commercial Street, Provincetown,
MA - 508-487-1430 - http://www.onlyatthecrown.com/)
on Friday, the 16th, at 8:00 pm. It should be quite a show. Sue is
currently appearing at THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher
Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/)
on Thursdays in May at 9:00 pm. See http://www.suematsuki.com/
for more about Sue. And see item about her DUPLEX show further down
this newsletter.
Just down the street at
9:00 pm at STEVE'S ALIBI (291 Commercial Street, Provincetown, MA
- 508-487-2890 - http://www.stevesalibi.com/)
you can catch "Size Queens" with Thirsty Burlington & Pearline Dubois
at 9:00 pm. They'll be back here on Saturday night at 9:00 pm as well.
Ida Zecco is featured
performer at the CROWN & ANCHOR (247 Commercial Street, Provincetown,
MA - 508-487-1430 - http://www.onlyatthecrown.com/)
at 10:00 pm on Friday night. Ms. Zecco is one of the top performers
in the Boston area, and has just formed a partnership to open LOU'S
PLACE AT SHORAH'S (27 Foster Street, Worcester, MA - 508-797-0007),
opening in June (currently in previews). For more information, see
http://www.idazecco.com/.
Another very popular Boston
performer, Carol O'Shaughnessy joins with Jim Rice for late night
piano bar at 11:00 pm at STEVE'S ALIBI (291 Commercial Street, Provincetown,
MA - 508-487-2890 - http://www.stevesalibi.com/).
They will be back at STEVE'S on Saturday night at 11:00 pm as well.
After Eileen Fulton's
show on Saturday night, another MAC Award-winning performer, Joan
Crowe, will present a show at 10:00 at the ESTHER'S (86 Commercial
Street Provincetown, MA - 508-487-7555 - http://www.estherlives.com/).
Ms. Crowe has great vocals, too - and is well known for her witty
stories and anecdotes.
On Sunday morning, May
18th, there is an AWARDS BREAKFAST at 10:00 am at Bayside Betsy's
(177 Commercial Street, Provincetown, MA - 508-487-6566- http://www.baysidebetsys.com/).
Then NYC vocalist Frank
Dain, along with Brian Patton, performs a Sunday Brunch show way down
the street at THE MEWS (429 Commercial Street Provincetown, MA - 508-487-1500
- http://www.mews.com/)
at 12:00 noon. I can't wait for this one - Frank hasn't performed
here in NYC for a while, and his vocals are terrific. For details,
see http://www.frankdain.com/.
Cape Cod resident Grace
O'Connor will perform at the CROWN & ANCHOR (247 Commercial Street,
Provincetown, MA - 508-487-1430 - http://www.onlyatthecrown.com/)
on Sunday at 3:00 pm, along with Doug Hammer. See http://www.graceoconnor.com/.
Finally, on Sunday night
at 5:00 pm, "At The Movies," the very popular vocal group made up
of Brian Patton, Nina Vansuch, Michael Ricca and Will McMillan will
perform at the UU MEETING HOUSE (236 Commercial Street, Provincetown,
MA). I reported on this group's recent show at SCULLERS JAZZ CLUB
(400 Soldiers Field Road, Allston, MA - 617-562-4111 - http://www.scullersjazz.com/)
in last Thursday's issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE.
During the day on Saturday,
at 10:00 am there will be a Coffee and CD Signing with Eileen Fulton
at SOMERSET HOUSE (378 Commercial Street, Provincetown, MA), Ida Zecco
and Tim Evans will present a Cabaret Masterclass at CROWN & ANCHOR
(247 Commercial Street, Provincetown, MA - 508-487-1430 - http://www.onlyatthecrown.com/)
while at the same time, Sue Matsuki and I will talk about "Promoting
Your Cabaret Show" at 11:00 at the other end of the block at FRANIZZI'S
(530 Commercial Street, Provincetown, MA). At 4:00 pm Sarah deLima
& Tim Evans present a free performance at The BEACONLIGHT (12 Winthrop
Street, Provincetown, MA) while at the same time Colleen Powers &
Jim Rice perform at the WHITE WIND INN (174 Commercial Street, Provincetown,
MA). And at 5:00 pm, singer/songwriter Ernie LiJoi will perform at
THE GIFFORD HOUSE, PORCH SIDE BAR (11 Carver Street, Provincetown,
MA). All these events are FREE.
I'll be attending as many
of the events that I can, and hope to write up a report for the CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/)
and a brief report in next Monday's issue of the newsletter while
returning from the weekend on AMTRAK. I hope many of you will be attending
- it is actually a very relaxing weekend, with plenty of free time
to hike around the Cape.

CABARET BULLETINS AVAILABLE
FOR NYC AREA FROM CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
From time to time we receive

are short, and may include a link to a longer item on the website.
Already over 150 interested folks have signed up for this FREE service
from CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE.
This special NYC e-mailing
list is a 2-month test. If you would like to be a part of this list,
please follow the instructions below. The subscription will be automatic.
You will receive confirmation. If we feel it is successful, we may

from the former Studio 54, currently the home of the Broadway show
CABARET!
TIME OUT NY WATCH - WEEK SIX
I give up! This week's
issue of TIME OUT NY continues their record of nearly totally ignoring
the MAC and cabaret community! No cabaret item in the "Music Section"
articles, just one cabaret personality in the photos, a single cabaret
performer listing in "The Best of the Rest," (regarding Ann Hampton
Callaway's weekend, noted above - it was her photo - not actually
a cabaret performance), no cabaret CDs reviewed or reported. This
is no where near the type of cabaret coverage that was formerly given
cabaret when it had a section of its own in the magazine, and was
promised by the editors at the MAC AWARDS show.
You might want to send
another note to TIME OUT with your thoughts. Even if you sent one
already. Editor-in-Chief Joe Angio claims he reads them all, but I
doubt he really cares. I list for one last time some addresses for
your convenience:

CABARET CLOSES - SET TO REOPEN
SOON
Alan Scott just sent me
the latest news regarding DOLLY'S PALM SPRINGS (http://www.dollyspalmsprings.com/).
It seems that the landlord of this new space consistently failed to
correct some problems with the space leased which were part of the
lease agreement, and finally Mr. Scott decided to move, lock stock
and barrel out of the building on April 19th. He almost immediately
found another location down the street. He expects to reach a lease
agreement with the new landlord late this week or early next. If that
happens, he will begin the process (again) of transferring the liquor
license, getting permits for the remodeling he will have to do, and
cleaning up the kitchen. Alan expects the whole process to take about
8 -10 weeks, so DOLLY'S will likely open in mid-July to early August.
Stay tuned.
REMINDER
BANNER AD spaces on the
CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website are selling out fast for May - the
first two weeks are nearly sold out. Note that we limit the ads to
20 banners per week, so if you plan to order a banner, reserve your
banner space as soon as possible. Over 6,000 folks visit our website
each day - on average reading 6 or 7 pages. In fact, page visits are
up more than 25% with folks reading our coverage of the recent MAC
Awards show and checking on the dozens of photos recently posted.
Ads are displayed in two places on nearly all 1,800+ pages. If you
are a member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, you might be entitles to a
discount or rebate on banner advertising.
For information on banner
ads, check out the banner information page on the CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/BannerHere.shtml),
or simply send me a note at banners@svhamstra.com
with the single word "Banner" in the subject line and I'll send all
the details.
Those running banners
will get mentioned in every issue of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE e-mail
newsletter (current circulation nearly 2,500) as long as the banner
is running. Your advertising dollars will help continue to promote
the art of cabaret on the website, publish the e-mail newsletter,
and make visits to various cabaret events and performances locally
and around the country.
CONGRATULATIONS TO RICHARD
SKIPPER
Richard Skipper will appear
on Friday morning, May 9th, as Carol Channing here in NYC on WB's
Channel 11 to read the weather on the morning news between 8:00 &
8:30 am. "Carol" will then schmooze with the news anchors! Of course
he will be plugging his show on Mondays in May at 9:00 pm at THE DUPLEX
CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/)
"An Evening With Carol Channing," which will have as special guest
on the 12th the inimitable Mary Stout (currently featured in BEAUTY
AND THE BEAST on Broadway). See item about this show below.
SHOWS SEEN
One of the reasons why
I went to two issues of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE per week (at least
on a test basis) is that the single issues were getting so filled
with listings stuff, I had no room to mention shows seen and other
items of interest. So, here is some information on shows I've seen
the past few weeks that bear special mention. I am hoping to get reports
on shows seen all the way back to the end of March.
Another thing I have noted
is that I can write a dozen reviews praising shows and performers,
and no one says a word (except some performers send thank-you's) but
if I write a review that is critical, I get a dozen e-mails praising
me for my honesty! Have cabaret reviews received the reputation of
being dishonest? All I can say is I write what I honestly feel about
a show. Of course, I go a little easier on a newcomer than a seasoned
professional, but I say what I feel and what I think.
Let me illustrate what
I look for in a cabaret show by reporting on a few I have seen recently.
Sue Matsuki new show "A
Tribute To The Gals Who Make Me Want To Sing" (Ella, Sarah, Carmen,
Peggy, Rosemary, Irene & Dakota) with Gary Pace on piano and John
Loehrke on bass, with Frank Fontana serving as director, is another
in a series of simple but delightful presentations by this MAC Award-winning
artist. In this show Sue explains how female vocalists of the past
have influenced the way she sings, and the way she approaches a song.
But she make no attempt to imitate their styles as she performs their
songs. Instead, she makes them her own, setting each one with a personal
observation, and adapting the song to her marvelous vocals. Sue features
a guest performer each week - the week I saw the show her guest was
the "rarely seen & heard lately" John Patrick Schutz. Lesson to be
learned from Sue? Try to make the audience feel that the song was
written with you in mind. I see too many shows where performers give
the impression that they are merely singing someone else's songs.
Want to learn about what cabaret is, while at the same time being
thoroughly entertained? See this show.
(Sue Matsuki continues
at THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438
- http://www.theduplex.com/)
on Thursdays, May 15th, 22nd & 29th, all shows at 9:00 pm. There is
a $15 cover, 2-drink minimum.)
Uptown, handsome Richard
Malavet is presenting a similar show covering the men who make him
want to sing. His show is called "Songs They Sang ... My Way" and
Richard discusses male jazz vocalists who inspire him (Sinatra, Crosby,
Epstein, Cole, Williams, etc.). Musical director is Ross Patterson,
with direction by Patricia Norcia. His show is technically in "preview"
so I won't review it, except to say that he too has caught the spirit
of cabaret. With the simple prop of a hat, a scarf or a pair of shoes,
he channels the spirit of the performer whose song he performs, without
any attempt to impersonate. Its a lovely show, and I look forward
to seeing the final version. Lesson to be learned from Richard? Be
sure you really believe in your material - and let that love show
in your work.
(Richard Malavet is at
DANNY'S SKYLIGHT ROOM (342 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-265-8133
- http://www.dannysgrandseapalace.com/)
just two more performances on Fridays, May 9th & 16th, both shows
at 9:30 pm. There is a $15 cover and $10 food/drink minimum.)
I dropped by THE DUPLEX
last week Saturday to catch newcomer Alexa Levitt's show "Another
Side of Me," with Gerry Dieffenbach as musical director and Gerry
Geddes directing. This young lady's vocals are stunning, and this
young lady is someone to keep an eye on in weeks, months and years
to come. The thrust of the show dealt with Ms. Levitt's decision to
make performing her full-time profession, with tributes to all those
folks along the way who are supporting her in this decision. Two songs,
both by contemporary songwriters, are a centerpiece of this show:
"I Will Hold On" by Mr. Dieffenbach, and "You Are Here" by Anthony
Gaglione and Mr. Geddes. Other songwriters represented were Van Morrison,
Melissa Manchester, George & Ira Gershwin, James Taylor, Cy Coleman
and more. An eclectic mix - but all the songs were blended into an
amazing show that came right from Ms. Levitt's heart. Lesson to be
learned from Alexa? As Anthony Santelmo would say, "Search out the
tunes!" I will add, surround yourself with talented people and listen
to their suggestions and advice, yet be true to your own self throughout.
Then sing your heart out!
(Alexis Levitt has three
more shows left in this run at THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher
Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/),
on Thursdays May 8th & 15th at 7:00 and Saturday, May 10th at 5:00
pm. There is a $15 cover, 2-drink minimum)
It had been about a year
since I had seen Richard Skipper's "An Evening With Carol Channing"
show, so on Monday I returned downtown to catch this constantly changing
act. Richard Skipper is amazing. After just a few minutes into his
show, you begin to believe that you are actually witnessing a performance
by Ms. Channing herself. He so thoroughly encloses himself with her
personality, her mannerisms, her vocals, you allow reality to fade
into fantasy. He reacts to events as Carol probably would, and even
takes questions from the audience - and answers them adroitly and
in detail - as Carol probably would. All the familiar songs are here
including "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend," but every once in a
while, you are taken aback by a new song - yet one that fits right
into Ms. Channing's personae. This time it was a new song by Karen
Benedetto about being a "swing" in a Broadway show - learning several
parts and always ready to jump in of the featured performer drops
out. Early in her career, Ms. Channing was such a performer. The show
ran long, but who cared? Richard's guest was Quinn Lemley, another
performer whose work I had not been able to see in some time. Lesson
to be learned from Richard? In spite of the fact that you feel you
are seeing Carol Channing, you are also aware that behind the make-up
is a clever, confident and alert performer, ready to make any event,
no matter how unexpected, a part of his performance. Don't get so
caught up in your planned patter that a distraction throws you off
course. Be so familiar with your material that whatever comes along,
you can use it to your advantage. He amazes me!
(Richard Skipped continues
on Monday nights at THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street,
NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/)
at 9:00 pm, with remaining shows on May 12th, 19th & 26th. There is
a $20 cover, 2-drink minimum)
There will be more show
reports in the next Mid-Week issue of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE newsletter.
Hopefully, I will catch up more while on the AMTRAK to Provincetown
on Thursday morning.

How do you get an item
posted in the BREAKING NEWS section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/)?
Just e-mail me a press release of at least four paragraphs, giving
the complete information on your show, CD release or other cabaret
related event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available. But
please send me complete information - and do not merely send a copy
of your flier. By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from
the press releases I receive before using the item on my website or
in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the four
or more paragraphs.
DON'T OVERLOOK THIS OPPORTUNITY
TO PROMOTE YOUR WEBSITE!
Cabaret performers can
also request a link to their website on the Performers Links pages
on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website - you don't need to be a member.
You should check this section just to make sure your name is listed
and properly linked. See http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/CabaretLinksIndex.shtml
While there, see if there
is another category on the page that you should be linked through
as well - Songwriter, Director, Videographer, etc. You do not have
to be a member to have a link on these pages. Please tell your friends
about this section of the website - eventually we hope it will become
sort of a "Cabaret Yellow Pages" section where you can find hundreds
of resources in putting together your show or recording your CD.
Remember, you need a website
to be linked. An e-mail address is not sufficient.
If you appreciate what
we are doing, and would like to see CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE not simply
continue, but also grow, please consider becoming a member this week.
Our new membership year starts on July 6th, but we have begun accepting
early membership contributions for the 2003-2004 year. If you join
now, you get 14 months of benefits for the cost of 12! Five folks
have already signed up for 2003-2004.
For information on becoming
a contributing member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, check at http://svhamstra.com/Membership.shtml
or else just send me a note at membership@svhamstra.com with the single
word "membership" in the subject line, and I'll send all the details.
You can even send your donation by credit card via PayPal - http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/PayPalPayment.shtml
I will be sending out
another issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE on Monday, the 12th, but I
am not certain when the MID-WEEK issue will be sent. I might get it
off on Wednesday before I leave for Provincetown, or may write it
up on the train on Thursday and email it out via my trusty little
iBook from the Cape on Thursday afternoon, when I arrive there. Meantime,
keep on sending in your cabaret press releases.
And that is just about
the way it was.
