CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE #030502 - Part 1 - Monday, May 12, 2003
Since 1990 Your First, Best, and Only Complete Source of Cabaret News

If it's anything to do with cabaret, you'll probably read it here first!

This is a Monday Issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE - testing a new twice-a-week issue, at least until the normal slow-down of cabaret in the summer months, when many rooms, especially the major ones, go dark. The Monday issue will include the regular Major Rooms listings for around the world, and will also give information on all the banner ads running on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/). The mid-week issue will concentrate more on news, breaking stories and notes and mini-reviews of shows seen - things I have not had space for in our once-a-week issues. I look forward to receiving your comments and suggestions on this new system.

I have to share something with you now that cannot wait for the Mid-Week issue, since by that time it will be too late. Last night, at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/) I attended Telly Leung's cabaret debut show "Let Me Sing" at 5:00 pm. Telly has just one more show - tomorrow night, Tuesday, May 13th at 6:00 pm. I suggest you call in your reservation today, after 4:00 pm, because this young man (who recently appeared on Broadway in FLOWER DRUM SONG) gave one of the most exciting cabaret performances I've seen in quite some time! I'll have more to say in the mid-week issue, but I urge you to catch this show while you can. With the new Fire Department-enforced occupancy rules at MAMA'S, cabaret show slots are hard to book, and while I know Sidney Myer was talking about possible future bookings for this very talented lad right after the show, who knows when he will be able to return? Remember, you read it here first!

CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE Newsletter schedules might be just slightly disrupted over the next week or so, since I will be heading to Provincetown on Thursday for CABARETFEST! (http://www.cabaretfest.com/) and returning late on Sunday the 18th. I may be sending out the mid-week issue on Wednesday instead of Thursday, or possibly on Friday. It really depends on what type of access I can get to the internet in Provincetown. It also means that items posted on the message board may be held up for several hours while I am travelling - there have been some rather disgusting things posted lately that I have had to delete, and so the message board is currently "locked," with items posted displayed after I release the lock. Sadly, some folks (fortunately only a few) seem more intent on spreading hate rather than promoting cabaret! So sad.

SHOW CANCELLATION NOTE

I received a note from the publicist for FEINSTEIN'S at the Regency Hotel (540 Park Avenue, NYC - 1-212-339-4095 - http://www.feinsteinsattheregency.com/) that the Stan Freberg show scheduled for May 20th through 25th has been postponed to a later date. This is the second postponement for this booking. No other information is available at this time - check the BREAKING NEWS page on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/) for more information on this show.

THIS JUST IN AS WE GO TO PRESS

"TIMELESS DIVAS" (ShaRell Productions, Sandi Durell & Shari Upbin) are proud to announce the addition of the fabulous Julie Halston to their roster of fine performers on Sunday night, May 18th at THE TRIAD (158 West 72nd Street, NYC). Julie has been knocking them dead on Broadway every night in the revival GYPSY, having garnered rave reviews. There are still a few seats available, so don't delay. Make that reservation immediately by calling 212-615-6966. More details are elsewhere in this issue, and there is a more complete story, with photo, in the "Breaking News" section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/).

SOME ITEMS OF NOTE

If you head down to the Village on Wednesdays, starting May 21st, check out DREAM A LITTLE DREAM - The Mamas and The Papas Musical at the VILLAGE THEATRE (158 Bleecker Street, New York, NY - 212-307-4100) at 8:00 pm. You will discover Eric Michael Gillett standing in for the lead role of Denny 'Papa' Doherty. I saw this show a few weeks back, and it certainly brought back memories of the era of the wild 60s & 70s, just before I moved from Jersey into Manhattan. I moved to the East Village at the time (St. Marks Place), right at the end of the "flower children" era. And the show actually is housed in what formerly was THE VILLAGE GATE - now completely remodeled, yet still having a bit of the flavor of the original. Here's the place where I met the fabulous Ms. Trudy Mann in the jazz bar upstairs - and saw Stan Edwards perform his tribute show to Bobby Darin (with Gary Pace at the piano!).

By the way, Stan is reprising the Bobby Darin tribute on Tuesday, May 13th at 7:00 pm at DANNY'S SKYLIGHT ROOM (342 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-265-8133 - http://www.dannysgrandseapalace.com/). The show is called "That Darin Guy" in celebration of Bobby Darin's birthday (he would have been 67 on May 14th). And, once more, the Gary Pace trio is providing the musical accompaniment. There is a $12 cover, 2-drink minimum.

And speaking of birthdays, on Thursday, May 22nd, at 9:00 pm, Darius Frowner - pianist at THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/) for 11 years - is having a party and his friends will be performing. Featured guests include Jerry Dixon, Mario Cantone, Capathia Jenkins, Trent Kendall, Bill Morgan, Kurt Kelly and many others. The party will be in the Duplex piano bar and admission is free! Darius is a musical director and pianist and has worked with many artists in theater and other venues including Billy Porter, Andrea McArdle, Melba Moore and Joan Rivers. The party will be a big event full of Broadway talent and many surprise guests.

TOO MANY CABARET SHOWS? WHO CAN BELIEVE IT!

Its Monday, and its another of those amazing days in NYC when everything seems to be happening at the same time. This is a common occurrence here in NYC because most of the Broadway theaters are closed on Mondays, so the performers are available for special benefits and events, and many chose the day to put on their own show - inviting all their theater performer friends. Here's a few we will be choosing from:

MAC Award winner Carolyn Montgomery is presenting her latest show "Reveille" at the historic, Off-Broadway ST. CLEMENTS THEATER (423 West 46th Street, NYC - 212-246-7277 Ext. 29), for six consecutive Mondays, with remaining shows on May 12th, May 19th, May 26th, and June 2nd - all shows at 8:00 pm. Tickets are $15 and can be reserved by calling St. Clements. Montgomery will be accompanied by her Musical Director, Rick Leonard, Producer and Director of the popular Cabaret by the Bay summer series in Fire Island, which features some of New York's most esteemed cabaret talent. You can find more information at http://www.carolynmontgomery.com/.

Keith Thompson's KOOKY TUNES, the highly acclaimed musical comedy review directed by two-time Tony Award winner Thommie Walsh, and featuring Jay Rogers, Patrick DeGennaro, Vanessa Jones and Perry Payne, reopens tonight for two performances only, tonight, May 12th, and next week Monday, the 19th, both shows at 8:00 pm at THE BACK ROOM AT DILLON'S (245 West 54th Street, NYC - Resv: 1-212-946-5416). The show features specialty material penned by Thompson, an award-winning musical theatre and television composer who wrote Off-Broadway's White Lies with standout screenwriter and playwright Douglas Carter Beane. There is a $15 cover charge and $10 food or drink minimum. See http://www.kookytunes.net/ for more details.

Michael McAssey presents the last performance of the encore presentation of his critically-acclaimed 20th anniversary show from last fall upstairs at REGENTS (317 East 53rd Street, NYC - 212-593-3091) tonight, Monday May 12th at 8:00 pm. I saw this show last week, and I urge you to see it before Michael heads of for more dates elsewhere. You can find more information at http://www.MichaelMcAssey.com/.

Singer/ pianist/songwriter, Robyn McCorquodale returns to DANNY'S SKYLIGHT ROOM (342 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-265-8133 - http://www.dannysgrandseapalace.com/) to present 2 more performances of "Up Ahead," on Mondays, May 12th (tonight!) and June 16th, both shows at 7:00 pm. The show, "Up Ahead," features a collection of songs comprising both classic standards and original compositions, including a few selections from her award-winning debut CD of the same name. Robyn will sing and play piano in her trio, with John Benthal on guitar and Ritt Henn on bass. There is a $12 music cover and $10 food/drink minimum. For more information, please see http://www.robynsong.com/.

Scott Siegel's "Broadway by the Year" show at THE TOWN HALL (123 West 43rd Street, NYC - http://www.the-townhall-nyc.org/) takes place tonight, Monday, May 12th. "The Broadway Musicals of 1953" will feature a cast of six musical theater and cabaret stars including Davis Gaines, Debbie Gravitte, Julia Murney, Scott Coulter, Ed Staudenmayer, and Andrea Burns. It will be directed by Peter Flynn. Ross Patterson continues in his role as the series' Musical Director. Siegel, the creator, writer, and host of "Broadway by the Year" pointed out that 1953 was the year that Cole Porter's "Can Can" was on Broadway. It was also the year of "Kismet," "Me & Juliet" and "Wonderful Town," among many other shows that have given us so many great songs. Tickets are still available at The Town Hall box office.

Richard Skipper continues his Monday night series at THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/) at 9:00 pm. Tonight's special guest is Mary Stout, star of "Beauty & the Beast" (she was also one of my favorites in "Jane Eyre." Tickets are $20 with a 2-drink minimum. For more information, see http://www.richardskipper.com/.

Seth Rudetsky, whose "Broadway Chatterbox" is a must-see every Thursday night at 6:00 pm at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/), is also performing his one-man show "Rhapsody in Seth" at THE ACTORS' PLAYHOUSE (100 Seventh Avenue South, NYC - Tele-Charge: 212-239-6200 - http://www.telecharge.com/) tonight, and every Monday night at 8:00 pm. WHY ADVERTISE ON CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE ?

One of the most difficult things for a new performer to do is expanding a following from just family and friends. The best way to do this is to get your name seen and recognized by as many folks as possible, and there is no better (and no cheaper) way to do this than a banner ad on CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE. Over 6,000 quality, cabaret-loving folks visit our website each day - and they look at on average of 6 or 7 pages each. Banner ads are displayed at random in two places on nearly all 1,800+ pages. This means your ad could be seen as many as 3,000 times each day, 21,000 times each week!

In addition, those running banners get mentioned every week in the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE e-mail newsletter (current circulation nearly 2,500) as long as the banner is running. That means nearly 5,000 times more that folks are exposed to your name. Plus, your advertising dollars will help continue to promote the art of cabaret on the website, publish the e-mail newsletter, and make visits to various cabaret events and performances locally and around the country.

BANNER AD spaces on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website ARE selling out fast for the month of May. Keep in mind that I limit the ads to 20 banners per week, so if you plan to order a banner, reserve your banner space as soon as possible.

For information on banner ads, check out the banner information page on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/BannerHere.shtml), or simply send me a note at banners@svhamstra.com with the single word "Banner" in the subject line and I'll send all the details.

UPDATE ON SHOWS ORIGINALLY SCHEDULED FOR JUDY'S CHELSEA

With the sudden closing of JUDY'S CHELSEA in March, several performers with shows scheduled for the room in the months of April & May had to find new venues and dates for their presentations - many after they had sent out expensive mailings. CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE is listing these shows here each week, through the end of May, as I receive information.

Ruben Flores performed two sell-out shows at JUDY'S CHELSEA and was in the process of booking more dates when the club closed. So he has re-booked at DANNY'S SKYLIGHT ROOM (342 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-265-8133 - http://www.dannysgrandseapalace.com/) with shows on Wednesdays, May 28th and June 25th at 9:15 pm, and Monday, June 30th at 7:00 pm. Matthew Ward is musical director and the show is directed by Phillip George. This is the young Mexican-born vocalist I told you about a few months ago - his vocals are fantastic and he has charisma to spare! There is a $12 cover, $10 food/drink minimum.

San Francisco's Shawn Ryan was booked for shows in June at the now-closed JUDY'S CHELSEA, so he has been booked at THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/) on Mondays, June 2nd & 9th at 9:00 pm. This will be his New York Cabaret Debut. Shawn recently completed a very successful "Month of Sundays" in April at San Francisco's PLUSH ROOM. There is a $15 cover, 2-drink minimum.

Barbara Lea, who was scheduled to perform at JUDY'S CHELSEA in April, will be performing instead at CHEZ SUZETTE (675B Ninth Avenue, NYC - 1-212-974-9002 - http://www.chezsuzettenyc.com/) on Friday, May 16th and Friday, June 20th - both dates with sets at 8:30 and 10:15 pm. No cover; $15 food/drink minimum. For more information, see http://www.barbaralea.com/.

Another show, originally scheduled for JUDY'S CHELSEA has found a new home. After a year and half of playing the Legendary Judy Garland in Charles Tolliver's play "Judy and Me," Peter Mac is taking to the stage for two nights to perform in Peter Mac "Is a Friend of Judy's" at REGENTS (317 East 53rd Street, NYC - 212-593-3091) on Tuesdays, May 20th & 27th at 8:30 pm. In this show, Mac plays "the other side of the rainbow," celebrating Garlands musical style and great wit. There is a $10 cover, $12 food/drink minimum.

Lucille Carr-Kaffashan's show originally scheduled for JUDY'S CHELSEA in April, will now be performed at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/) on Wednesday, May 14th at 6:00 pm, Saturday, May 24th at 4:30 pm and Friday, May 30th at 8:30 pm. Lucille will also present the show at THE CABARET at Odette's (South River Road, New Hope, PA - 215-862-3000 - http://www.odettes.com/) on Friday & Saturday, June 6th & 7th at 8:00 pm.

Clark Warren will perform his show, also originally scheduled for JUDY'S CHELSEA, at DANNY'S SKYLIGHT ROOM (342 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-265-8133 - http://www.dannysgrandseapalace.com/) on Thursdays in July, the 10th, 17th and 24th at 7:00 pm. Clark will have as a special guest Pamela Palmieri on July 17th & 24th.

If your show was originally booked at JUDY'S CHELSEA, please let me know as soon as possible if/where/when it has been re-booked so I can let folks know here.

From time to time I receive information about show cancellations, last-minute cast changes, or other items of interest to cabaret lovers specific to a single geographical location. Rather then send out a general bulletin to the entire 2,500 subscribers, I am setting up a process to target subscribers that might have an interest in these items.

The bulletins will be short, and may include a link to a longer item on the website. Already over 150 interested folks have signed up for this FREE service from CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE. Copies of bulletins sent so far are posted on the Cabaret Hotline Online Website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/) in the ARCHIVES section.

This special NYC e-mailing list is a 2-month test. If you would like to be a part of this list, please follow the instructions below. The subscription will be automatic. You will receive confirmation. If I feel it is successful, I will extend the program to other areas (BOSTON - CHICAGO - WEST COAST, etc.). At some point during the test period I will be asking those on the list for feedback, suggestions and comments.

COMING NEXT ISSUE

We will be sending out the Mid-Week issue later this week which will include reports/reviews on shows seen, as well as more news items, more cabaret listings and a rundown of new BREAKING NEWS items added to the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/) since the last mid-week issue. I will also have news (hopefully) on some new cabaret ventures here in NYC and elsewhere. I'll have a 4 1/2 hour train trip on AMTRAK to and from Boston to work on new items for the website and collecting more news for the newsletter. Stay tuned - we just passed the 2000-page mark on the website and it keeps growing, and growing, and growing. More folks than ever before are visiting the website - on April 25th, the day after the MAC Awards show, visits were double the usual daily rate - setting a new record! And for reasons I can't quite explain, there was another spike in visitors to the website on Tuesday, May 6th! On March 1st had to upgrade my website contract in order to handle the extra traffic received in recent months. Even though I doubled the amount in the new contract, I am already using nearly 85% of the total bandwidth used!

If you appreciate what I'm doing, and would like to see CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE not just continue, but also grow, please consider becoming a member this week. We are now accepting members for the new 2003-2004 year (memberships expire on July 6th, so folks who join new get an extra 50 days of benefits. For information on becoming a contributing member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, check at http://svhamstra.com/Membership.shtml or else just send me a note at membership@svhamstra.com with the single word "membership" in the subject line, and I'll send all the details. You can even send your membership donation by credit card via PayPal - http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/PayPalPayment.shtml.

Now I have to dig my suitcase out of the storage closet and start collecting items to take along with me to Provincetown. I hope to see a number of my New England area friends at the CABARETFEST! (http://www.cabaretfest.com/) as well as meet new friends of cabaret while I'm there.

And that is just about the way it was.

Hugs & Stuff,

STU
