CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE #030503 - Part 2 - Thursday, May 22, 2003
Since 1990 Your First, Best, and Only Complete Source of Cabaret News

If it's anything to do with cabaret, you'll probably read it here first!

This is the MID-WEEK CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, part two of the issue we sent out on Monday. We are testing a new twice-a-week issue, at least until the normal slow-down of cabaret in the summer months, when many rooms, especially the major ones, go dark. The MONDAY issue included the regular "Major Rooms" listings for cabarets around the world, and also has information on all the banner ads running on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/). This MID-WEEK issue will concentrate more on news, breaking stories and notes on shows seen - things we have not had space for in our once-a-week issues. We look forward to receiving your comments and suggestions on this new system.

This issue actually started to be written last week Thursday, aboard AMTRAK 190 - NY/BOSTON which had started its trip at 3:00 am in Washington DC, stopping briefly at Pennsylvania Station in NYC to pick me (and about 200 other folks) up around 7:00 am. I started my own personal trek at 5:00 am from my apartment in Queens. I had hoped to complete the issue by the time I reached Provincetown for CABARETFEST! (http://www.cabaretfest.com/) using an internet connection there to transmit it when I arrived. In case you missed the last few issues, CABARETFEST! (http://www.cabaretfest.com/) is that fantastic cabaret adventure the John O'Neil's At Last Productions puts on each year - this was the 4th Annual Provincetown affair.

How easy it is for plans to go awry. As it turned out, I was unable to do much in the way of internet connecting in Provincetown, since I had to use a "dial-up" modem instead of a high-speed connection, as well as a long-distance line, and a phone setup that I could only use a few minutes at a time, since it was located in one of the parlours of the B&B I was staying at. No desk in my room, so I just took a brief "vacation" from writing while on the Cape.

For those who have been asking, that oft-sprained left ankle is nearly healed - I have sprained to so often, I carry an ace-bandage in my briefcase! Walking is no problem anymore - but stairways are still a challenge. Interestingly, I have a bigger problem going down stairs than up stairs!

Meantime, I will take some of the information and reviews I prepared for last week's issue, and will combine them with some new items for this sort-of "double Mid-Week issue." I'll have a full report on the CABARETFEST! fun on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/) as soon as I catch up on all the work I put aside. Fortunately, the local weather prediction for this Memorial Day weekend is for rain and more rain. Very conducive to staying indoors and writing - if I can only resist that all-day "Law & Order" marathon scheduled for Monday on TV!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DARIUS!

Tonight, Thursday, May 22nd, at 9:00 pm, Darius Frowner - pianist at THE DUPLEX (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/) for 11 years - is celebrating his birthday with a party and many of his friends will be dropping by to perform. Featured guests include Jerry Dixon, Mario Cantone, Capathia Jenkins, Trent Kendall, Bill Morgan, Kurt Kelly and many others. The party will be in the Duplex piano bar and admission is free! CONGRATULATIONS TO HAYDEN TEE

Handsome and talented Hayden Tee opened his new series "MufTee" at the STABLES THEATRE (10 Nimrod Street, Kings Cross, Sydney - Tel: 9250-7799) on Friday night, May 16th at 11:00 pm. The concept of the show provides a unique meshing of cabaret performance with special guests and audience interplay. "MufTee" launches officially this weekend on May 23rd & 24th with established performers Chelsea Plumley and Phil Scott appearing as guests. Hayden Tee, the host of MufTee, last year won the Sydney Cabaret Convention's New York Award and went on to perform his solo cabaret show at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/). He was recently featured in a leading role in the hit play "Three Winters Green" at the Stables Theatre and has toured his cabaret show "Quarterlife Crisis" to Melbourne, Canberra and Sydney in the last few months. There will be two shows per week, on Fridays & Saturdays at 11:00 pm, costing $15 per ticket.

NY TIMES TALKS ABOUT CABARET

Everyone around the country was all agog to discover that the N.Y. TIMES had devoted a large article in the ARTS & LEISURE section of the May 9th (Friday) issue on the state of cabaret in New York City, written by cabaret critic Stephen Holden. Except for listings and an occasional review, the TIMES has been notorious for ignoring cabaret events in town for several years, including the Cabaret Conventions, MAC Awards, etc. I received e-mails from as far away as Chicago and Boston, from folks who were both surprised and pleased with this recognition of the oft-ignored art of cabaret. The article was a welcome relief to the NYC area cabaret community, after being dumped on by TIME OUT NY (A co-sponsor of the MAC Awards, yet never mentioning the Award winners in their magazine!) and cabaret coverage cut in half by SHOW BUSINESS WEEKLY. While the TIMES article tended to concentrate on the presentations in the major (expensive) rooms, and in a few instances seemed to belittle the events in the less exclusive rooms, it still was nice to see familiar names and places mentioned and recognized in this "paper of record."

G&L COMEDY FEST RETURNS

2002 MAC Nominated Michael Conley has returned with the Gay & Lesbian Comedy Fest to DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/) with remaining shows will on Saturdays, May 24th (11:00 pm) and 31st (8:30 pm with guest host Sydney Myer). Appearing in last week's lineup were Rick Skye as Liza Minnelli, 2003 MAC Award Nominated Comedienne Poppi Kramer, Shelagh Ratner (from Comic Strip Live!), Sidney Myer, Erin Foley (from Comedy Central's Premium Blend), Back Stage BISTRO Award winner Mark McCombs, and the undefinable, unreviewable, unpredictable and unphotographable Craig Coursey, whose last stage appearance was in the Grand Rapids Civic Theater's "Brigadoon." More such great lineups are planned for the next two shows. David Maiocco is Musical Director.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY RUBEN FLORES!

Ruben Flores is a singing waiter at ELLEN'S STARDUST DINER (1650 Broadway, NYC - 1-212-956-5151). It's his birthday today, but he has to work anyway - if you are in the area tonight drop by for a sundae and help everyone celebrate with him. This is the young Mexican-born vocalist I told you about a few months ago - his vocals are fantastic and he has charisma to spare! He's only been in the USA for a short time, so I'm sure he would appreciate your birthday wishes. Ruben performed two sell-out shows at JUDY'S CHELSEA and was in the process of booking more dates when the club closed. So he has re-booked at DANNY'S SKYLIGHT ROOM (342 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-265-8133 - http://www.dannysgrandseapalace.com/) with shows on Wednesdays, May 28th and June 25th at 9:15 pm, and Monday, June 30th at 7:00 pm. Matthew Ward is musical director and the show is directed by Phillip George. There is a $12 cover, $10 food/drink minimum. For more information, see http://www.rubenfloresonline.com/.

SYDNEY CABARET CONVENTION OPENS NEXT WEEK

Australia's oldest major cabaret event, the Seventh Annual Sydney Cabaret Convention, will be held at Sydney Town Hall from May 27th through 31st. This year's event has a whole new look. New room, new set, new design, new menu, new cast, new stage, new start time and new entrance. An initiative of the City of Sydney, the convention provides a forum for emerging artists to perform to industry professionals and the general public alongside well-known artists and cabaret stars.

The 2003 Sydney Cabaret Convention Showcase runs over four nights in the new City Cabaret Club in the Lower Town Hall. Each Showcase artist has 12 minutes to perform their routine. This year's Host is Garry Scale with Chelsea Plumley as Compere. Straight after the opening night act from Garry and Chelsea there will be three Showcase finalists each night from Tuesday until Friday. They have been hand-picked from over 100 applicants from our Open Auditions which were held in April. For more information, see http://www.cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au/cabaret/.

ADELAIDE FESTIVAL IN JUNE

From New York, London, Paris, New Zealand and across Australia to Adelaide come over 400 sensational cabaret performers for the third annual Adelaide Cabaret Festival, to be held at the Adelaide Festival Centre, from June 6th through 22nd. Full program details on the Adelaide Cabaret Festival website at http://www.adelaidecabaret.com/. Tickets on sale now around the country from BASS Dial-n-Charge 131-246 or online http://www.bass.net.au/.

An overwhelming response to the festival in 2002, with over 40,000 attendances and a number of sell-out shows, has prompted the programming this year of an even bigger festival with more artists on the bill than ever before. The 2003 Adelaide Cabaret Festival program will feature some 143 memorable performances, including 16 Australian premieres, over 17 fabulous days and nights. And it's one exclusive stop only, the Adelaide Cabaret Festival, for the 30 international guest artists on the program, many in Australia for the first time.

And, in what is undoubtedly a major coup for the Adelaide Cabaret Festival, they will present the world premiere of the first full orchestral production of the brilliant music theatre piece "Songs for a New World," by Broadway composer and musical director, Jason Robert Brown. In a unique Australia/US collaboration, the Tony Award winning Jason Robert Brown will be joined on stage by our very own 35-piece Adelaide Art Orchestra, all-star Broadway guest soloists Emily Skinner and Lauren Kennedy, as well as Australian television star Spencer McLaren (Secret Life of Us)."

SHOWS SEEN

One of the reasons why I went to two issues of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE per week (at least on a test basis) is that the single issues were getting so filled with listings stuff, I had no room to mention shows seen and other items of interest.

Now for a confession. Writing reviews is that part of my "job" that I most dislike - and that part of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE that most readers (especially performers) seem to want. I get notes almost daily from performers asking when I will write a review of their show.

Please keep in mind that there are some shows and performances that I deem "not quite ready for a review." Other shows, by my judgement, were "never meant for a review." And then there are ones I see where "I can't wait to write that review!" Since I have limited space - and more importantly, limited time - there is no way I can write something about every show I see, even when I attempt to keep my remarks to a single paragraph. But I am doing the best I can - and sometimes a review might not appear until just before a performer repeats a particular show later in the year.

So, here is some information on just four shows I've seen the past few weeks that bear special mention.

Every once in a while a debut performer comes along who so completely fulfils the concepts of great cabaret, I simply can't wait to let others know about it. Telly Leung recently appeared in just two shows at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/) and after the first one I immediately got on my cell phone to alert several other cabaret press folks that I had on speed-dial, and made mention of the show in the issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE sent out the following day. This young Asian-American man, born in Brooklyn, was a member of the cast of the Broadway show FLOWER DRUM SONG, which recently closed. His extraordinary vocals and confident stage presence made this mainly autobiographical show a total joy. With clever "inside" asides to fellow cast members in the audience, hilarious recollections of his childhood, and a poignant tribute to his parents (who swam 7 miles from mainland China to Hong Kong so that could live and raise a family in freedom) Mr. Leung had the audience in rapt attention throughout. It was a show that simply cried out for a return visit, and hopefully additional performance dates can be arranged. This is the third fantastic male vocal debut show seen this year - Rob Sutton, Ruben Flores, and now Telly Leung. It's been a great year so far!

Carolyn Montgomery is currently appearing on Mondays at 8:00 pm at ST. CLEMENTS THEATER (423 West 46th Street, NYC - 212-246-7277 Ext. 29) in a show that is so perfectly presented, it is difficult to condense into a single paragraph. By the time she reached just the second song in the show, I settled back, knowing I would thoroughly enjoy every moment that followed. I was right. By the fourth song (A Time for Love), I was in heaven - or pretty close, considering that the show is performed in a church. Ms. Montgomery's creamy vocals only tell part of the story. She is a natural storyteller, and as she wove her way through the song list, making full use of a rather amazing stage set (used for another show that occupies the space the rest of the week), she embraced all of our emotions - sometimes funny, sometimes touching, sometimes revealing, but at all times totally entertaining. And she included two songs by George Winters! Who could ask for anything more! Musical direction by Rick Leonard was precise and perfect - in spite of the fact that because of the expanse of the stage set, his piano was placed far to the right and actually off stage. Carolyn has two more performances of "Reveille," on Mondays, May 26th and June 2nd. There is plenty of room (the space seats over 100), but make that reservation before this run ends. This is a show you should not miss!

Rob LaRocco has done it again! Rob is the songwriter/musical director who brought to cabaret the beautiful vocals of such wonderful singers as Marcus Simeone and Eva Ladas. Vicki Levy, who recently appeared at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/) has Rob as her musical director, and once again the LaRocco magic is a work. Ms. Levy has a sparkling personality, and vocals that fill the room with exquisite sound. Her physical beauty is obvious, so it is no wonder that her show had a travel theme that spotlighted a romantic interlude in various cities around the world. Born in Toronto, and living in Johannesburg and Dallas, and finally settling in NYC, Ms. Levy also took us on visits to San Francisco, Atlanta and other locales in her search for the perfect partner. Along the way she described the qualifications she was looking for ("Any Man of Mine") and a few dates that failed to meet them ("Something I Thought I'd Never Do"). But the star of the show was Ms. Levy's vocals - so clean, so pure and so lovely to listen to.

Stephanie Zagoren is a dear friend of mine - and a very quickly a dear friend of just about everyone she comes in contact with. Her charm and winning smile are the centerpiece of her show "A Breath of Spring!" currently running at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/). This show was like a breath of fresh air in cabaret - no pretensions, no convoluted theme, just lovely songs sung in a lovely way by a lovely lady. With musical director Wells Hanley and bassist John Loehrke, Ms. Zagoren presented a song list of favorites, standards and showtunes, with vocal clarity and lyrical energy that captured my heart. Those that know Stephanie personally could appreciate even more the depth of feeling she gave to a number of songs, especially the poignant "I Get Along Without You Very Well" and "The Man I Love." You have one more chance this run to catch this show - Saturday, May 31st at 6:30 pm. I suggest this show as a delightful way to start a springtime Saturday evening.

There will be more cabaret mini-reviews in the next Mid-Week issue of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE newsletter. I have also been collecting them for a special section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/) where I can expand on my comments and include a photo when possible. I will also be adding several that will not appear in the e-mail CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE issues. I'll let you know when they are posted.

CABARET NEWS ON THE WEBSITE

Information about other shows around the country and around the world can be found on the BREAKING NEWS page of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/) as well as in the LISTINGS section. I have also been adding piano bar and lounge listings for all areas. New items are added almost daily! With my 4-day holiday in Provincetown, I have gotten a bit behind in posting new items, so as soon as this newsletter goes out, I will get busy catching up. Many readers don't realize that this is a one-man operation.

How do you get an item posted in the BREAKING NEWS section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website? Just e-mail me a press release of at least four paragraphs, giving the complete information on your show, CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available. But please send me complete information - and do not merely send a copy of your flier. By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from the press releases I receive before using the item on my website or in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the four or more paragraphs.

DON'T OVERLOOK THIS OPPORTUNITY TO PROMOTE YOUR WEBSITE!

Cabaret performers can also request a link to their website on the Performers Links pages on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website - you don't need to be a member. You should check this section just to make sure your name is listed and properly linked. See http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/CabaretLinksIndex.shtml

While there, see if there is another category on the page that you should be linked through as well - Songwriter, Director, Videographer, etc. You do not have to be a member to have a link on these pages. Please tell your friends about this section of the website - eventually we hope it will become sort of a "Cabaret Yellow Pages" section where you can find hundreds of resources in putting together your show or recording your CD.

Remember, you need a website to be linked. An e-mail address is not sufficient.

MEMORIAL DAY THOUGHTS

The last Monday in May is set aside for remembering, here in the US. I have a special "REMEMBERING" section on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/) where you can find brief items on cabaret performers and personalities who are no longer with us. It is very incomplete - my resources are limited, and there are so many more I would like to add. Especially poignant are the short comments that folks have sent me to add to the short obituaries posted. If you wish to share your thoughts about someone remembered there, use the special e-mail address provided on that particular page. If I deem it appropriate, I will post it. Please provide your full name and city of residence.

And if there is someone that you would like to see added, send along as much information as you can - along with a photo in gif or jpg format, and again, if I consider it appropriate, I will add it as well. Let's not forget those who are no longer with us - for a number those remembered on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website, this is the only remaining reference to them on the entire internet!

I have much more to write about, but I have a goal of getting newsletters out by 1:00 pm and that time is fast approaching. I am not sure if the next issue will be on Monday or Tuesday, since Monday is a holiday here. Just keep checking your mailbox. This "twice-a-week" set up is a lot more work than I realized!

I have tried to include a number of special birthday congratulations in this issue, since the countdown has begun for my own personal celebration on July 6th. This year, my birthday is on a Sunday - as usual on a 4th of July weekend. It's also the 13th birthday of CABARET HOTLINE - the premier issue of the print editions of the newsletter was published on July 6, 1990. In fact, I will try to include a birthday wish in each issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE until July 6th let me know if there is a special birthday celebration/show to write about - and then the real fun begins. Thanks to a special dispensation given me by the divine Karen Mason a few years ago, I am permitted to celebrate my birthday for an entire month! So, attention all bartenders: check your stocks of Seagram 7 Crown - the partying will soon begin! (Will they still love me, when I'm 64?)

And that is just about the way it was.

Hugs & Stuff,

STU
