CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE #030504 - Part 1 - Monday, May 26, 2003
Since 1990 Your First, Best, and Only Complete Source of Cabaret News

If it's anything to do with cabaret, you'll probably read it here first!

This is a Monday Issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE - testing a new twice-a-week issue, at least until the normal slow-down of cabaret in the summer months, when many rooms, especially the major ones, go dark. The Monday issue will include the regular Major Rooms listings for around the world, and will also give information on all the banner ads running on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/). The mid-week issue will concentrate more on news, breaking stories and notes and mini-reviews of shows seen - things I have not had space for in our once-a-week issues. I look forward to receiving your comments and suggestions on this new system.

It is a rainy Memorial Day here in NYC (and from what I see on the TODAY show, just about all over the US. It has actually been raining here - on and off - since Thursday, ruining a lot of plans for this holiday weekend. It has been cool as well - with just a few weeks to go before summer. I have spent the past several days adding several new items to the BREAKING NEWS page, and getting caught up on my e-mails. (I have only about 20 e-mails to answer!) But I have a lot to tell you about today - and I hope you find all the special "nuggets" of news scattered throughout this issue. And in part two of this issue, I hope to be able to give you details of several exciting things to come in the world of cabaret!

HELP NEEDED ON A SPECIAL PROJECT

You can help me with a new project. I hope to add a section on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/) listing the names and addresses (and e-mail addresses, if available) of cabaret writers and reviewers around the country and the world. I get many requests for this information, and while I have information for most of the NYC-based writers, I would like to include other scribes as well - including writers in the UK and Australia. Please include the name of the publication or website along with the mailing address (with ZIP codes, etc.). Your help in this project will be appreciated by performers everywhere, I am sure! Just sent the information to press@svhamstra.com. Thanks!

IMPORTANT ROOM CHANGE NOTICE

Carolyn Montgomery's last show at ST. CLEMENTS THEATER (423 West 46th Street, NYC - 212-246-7277 Ext. 29) will be tonight, Monday May 26th, at 8:00 pm. Next week the theater will be a filming location for the cable TV show "Sex in the City." The St. Clements folks were kind enough to offer to honor her last show date - but that would mean no "Sex in the City" location filming, and no big bucks for the church. So, Carolyn found another venue and the final "Reveille" performance, on June 2nd, has been moved to SWING 46 (349 West 46th Street, NYC - 212-262-9554) at 8:00 pm.

CONGRATULATIONS TO GEORGE SANDERS!

Piano-Bar entertainer George Sanders, along with comedian partner Shawn Curran and pianist Jay Bradley, will be performing in Switzerland on May 31st for an international singing festival held at the Volkshaus, in downtown Zurich. The three-day festival will include choirs and singers from all over the world, and will culminate in a party where the trio will provide entertainment along with their green snake-puppet, Sneaky Snake. Sneaky Snake's popular short film, "Sneaky Snake Goes To Switzerland," will also be featured during the festivities, as well as piano-bar inspired entertainment. For more information see http://www.chorspektakel.ch/.

CLUB LOOKING FOR ACTS

I stopped by DILLON'S (245 West 54th Street, NYC - Resv: 212-307-9797) last week Thursday night, where Ricky Ritzel is at the piano and Leslie Anderson is singing waiter for piano bar starting around 10:00 pm. (We also were celebrating Ruben Flores' birthday.) Scott Barbarino gave me a tour of the cabaret room, and explained several of the improvements going on in the room. It seats around 100, and a full dining menu is available for service in the room before the show. Scott is looking for acts - and with both Michael Barbieri (formerly at JUDY'S CHELSEA) and JP (formerly at ARCI'S PLACE) on staff for technical direction, this Theater District hot spot (directly across the street from STUDIO 54, where "Cabaret" is playing), will soon be "the place to be seen." Call the phone number above, and leave a message for Scott - tell him CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE told you to call.

WHY ADVERTISE ON CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE ?

One of the most difficult things for a new performer to do is expanding a following from just family and friends. The best way to do this is to get your name seen and recognized by as many folks as possible, and there is no better (and no cheaper) way to do this than a banner ad on CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE. Over 6,000 quality, cabaret-loving folks visit our website each day - and they look at on average of 6 or 7 pages each. Banner ads are displayed at random in two places on nearly all 2,500+ pages. This means your ad could be seen as many as 3,000 times each day, 21,000 times each week!

In addition, those running banners get mentioned every week in the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE e-mail newsletter (current circulation nearly 2,500) as long as the banner is running. That means nearly 5,000 times more that folks are exposed to your name. Plus, your advertising dollars will help continue to promote the art of cabaret on the website, publish the e-mail newsletter, and make visits to various cabaret events and performances locally and around the country.

BANNER AD spaces on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website are selling out fast for the month of June. Keep in mind that I limit the ads to 20 banners per week, so if you plan to order a banner, reserve your banner space as soon as possible.

For information on banner ads, check out the banner information page on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/BannerHere.shtml), or simply send me a note at banners@svhamstra.com with the single word "Banner" in the subject line and I'll send all the details.

A WORD FROM OUR SPONSORS

REMEMBER: Each weekly issue of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE newsletter includes a rundown of all the banner advertisers on the website - and these items will be repeated as long as the banner is running. There is a more complete article on nearly all these items in the BREAKING NEWS section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/).

UPDATE ON SHOWS ORIGINALLY SCHEDULED FOR JUDY'S CHELSEA

With the sudden closing of JUDY'S CHELSEA in March, several performers with shows scheduled for the room in the months of April & May had to find new venues and dates for their presentations - many after they had sent out expensive mailings. CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE is listing these shows here each week, through the end of May, as I receive information.

San Francisco's Shawn Ryan was booked for shows in June at the now-closed JUDY'S CHELSEA, so he has been booked at THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/) on Mondays, June 2nd & 9th at 9:00 pm. This will be his New York Cabaret Debut. Shawn recently completed a very successful "Month of Sundays" in April at San Francisco's PLUSH ROOM. There is a $15 cover, 2-drink minimum.

Barbara Lea, who was scheduled to perform at JUDY'S CHELSEA in April, will be performing instead at CHEZ SUZETTE (675B Ninth Avenue, NYC - 1-212-974-9002 - http://www.chezsuzettenyc.com/) on Friday, June 20th with sets at 8:30 and 10:15 pm. No cover; $15 food/drink minimum. Barbara also will be the first cabaret act to initiate weekend bookings at the brand new cabaret room operated by the Genesius Guild, UPSTAIRS @ RED (356 West 44th Street, NYC - SmartTix: 212-206-4444 - http://www.smarttix.com/). Her remaining shows will be on Friday and Saturday, May 30th & 31st at 9:00 pm. For more information, see http://www.barbaralea.com/.

Another show, originally scheduled for JUDY'S CHELSEA has found a new home. After a year and half of playing the Legendary Judy Garland in Charles Tolliver's play "Judy and Me," Peter Mac is taking to the stage for two nights to perform in Peter Mac "Is a Friend of Judy's" at REGENTS (317 East 53rd Street, NYC - 212-593-3091 - http://www.RegentsClub.com) with one remaining show on Tuesday, May 27th at 8:30 pm. In this show, Mac plays "the other side of the rainbow," celebrating Garlands musical style and great wit. There is a $10 cover, $12 food/drink minimum.

Clark Warren will perform his show, also originally scheduled for JUDY'S CHELSEA, at DANNY'S SKYLIGHT ROOM (342 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-265-8133 - http://www.dannysgrandseapalace.com/) on Thursdays in July, the 10th, 17th and 24th at 7:00 pm. Clark will have as a special guest Pamela Palmieri on July 17th & 24th.

This is the final listing of these items in CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE.

CABARET BULLETINS AVAILABLE

From time to time I receive information about show cancellations, last-minute cast changes, or other items of interest to cabaret lovers specific to a single geographical location. Rather then send out a general bulletin to the entire 2,500 subscribers, I am setting up a process to target subscribers that might have an interest in these items.

The bulletins will be short, and may include a link to a longer item on the website. Already over 150 interested folks have signed up for this FREE service from CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE. Copies of bulletins sent so far are posted on the Cabaret Hotline Online Website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/) in the ARCHIVES section.

This special NYC e-mailing list is a 2-month test. If you would like to be a part of this list, please follow the instructions below. The subscription will be automatic. You will receive confirmation. If I feel it is successful, I will extend the program to other areas (BOSTON - CHICAGO - WEST COAST, etc.). At some point during the test period I will be asking those on the list for feedback, suggestions and comments.

Just click the line below and hit the send button:

COMING NEXT ISSUE

We will be sending out the Mid-Week issue later this week which will include reports/reviews on shows seen, as well as more news items, more cabaret listings and a rundown of new BREAKING NEWS items added to the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/) since the last mid-week issue. Stay tuned - we just passed the 2500-page mark on the website and it keeps growing, and growing, and growing. We are very close to reaching 2,500 subscribers for the newsletter as well! More folks than ever before are visiting the website - on April 15th, the day after the MAC Awards show, visits were double the usual daily rate - setting a new record! And for reasons I can't quite explain, there was another spike in visitors to the website on Tuesday, May 6th! On March 1st had to upgrade my website contract in order to handle the extra traffic received in recent months. Even though I doubled the amount in the new contract, I am already using nearly 85% of the total bandwidth used! Folks all over the world are interested in cabaret! Our stats show visits from folks in Russia, Egypt, China, Japan, Korea, Africa and many countries in Central & South America!

Once again, in this issue, I have tried to include a number of special birthday congratulations, since the countdown has begun for my own personal celebration on July 6th. In fact, I will try to include a birthday wish in each issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE until July 6th let me know if there is a special birthday celebration/show to write about. This year, my birthday is on a Sunday - as usual on a 4th of July weekend. It's also the 13th birthday of CABARET HOTLINE - the premier issue of the print editions of the newsletter was published on July 6, 1990. I once again am tempted to have a celebration show of my own on my birthday - but I really don't know if anyone will be around on that weekend to help me celebrate. I guess I have to decide soon. In any case, July 6 will mark the start of a full month of celebrating. Thanks to a special dispensation given me by the divine Ms. Karen Mason a few years ago, I am permitted to celebrate my birthday through August 5th! So, attention all bartenders: check your stocks of Seagram 7 Crown - the partying will soon begin! (Will they still love me, when I'm 64?)

Well, its time to send this one off. It is supposed to rain all day, but I still plan to head into Manhattan tonight to catch Hector Coris' show at UPSTAIRS AT ROSE'S TURN (55 Grove Street, NYC - 1-212-366-5438) at 7:00 pm, and then I might catch Richard Skipper's "An Evening With Carol Channing" show across the street at THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/) - Richard's guests are Scott Coulter & Audrey Lavine! Then, if I have the energy, I hope to drop in on Jim Caruso's CAST PARTY at KING KONG ROOM at the Supper Club (240 West 47th Street, NYC - 1-212-921-1940 - http://www.KingKongRoom.com/).

And that is just about the way it was.

Hugs & Stuff,

STU
