CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE #030504 - Part 2 - Thursday, May 29, 2003
Since 1990 Your First, Best, and Only Complete Source of Cabaret News
If it's anything to do with cabaret, you'll probably read it here first!

This is the MID-WEEK CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, part two of the issue we sent out on Monday. We are testing a new twice-a-week issue, at least until the normal slow-down of cabaret in the summer months, when many rooms, especially the major ones, go dark. The MONDAY issue included the regular "Major Rooms" listings for cabarets around the world, and also has information on all the banner ads running on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/). This MID-WEEK issue will concentrate more on news, breaking stories and notes on shows seen - things we have not had space for in our once-a-week issues. We look forward to receiving your comments and suggestions on this new system. This issue will be a little shorter than usual - it has been a busy week for me - seeing two shows a night for the past three nights, and another duet of shows tonight - and getting home at nearly 2:00 am each night, helping folks celebrate their birthdays after shows seen! Actually, I'm in training for my upcoming "Birthmonth."
CORRECTION - WRONG PHONE NUMBER
I gave an incorrect phone listing in the issue (#030504 - Part 1) for DILLON'S (245 West 54th Street, NYC) The correct number is 212-307-9797. Scott Barbarino is looking for acts - and with both Michael Barbieri (formerly at JUDY'S CHELSEA) and JP (formerly at ARCI'S PLACE) on staff for technical direction, this Theater District hot spot (directly across the street from STUDIO 54, where "Cabaret" is playing), will soon be "the place to be seen." The cabaret room seats around 100, and a full dining menu is available for service in the room before the show. Call the phone number above, and leave a message for Scott - tell him CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE told you to call.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BOB HOPE
I awoke this morning to the TODAY show salute to Bob Hope on his 100th birthday - there have been several TV documentaries this past week on the subject of Mr. Hope regarding this anniversary. So, I want to add my own best wishes to Bob and best wishes to all who share this celebration. I added my own little happy birthday wish to the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/) this morning.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DON SCHAFFER!
As announced last night at Ruben Flores' show at DANNY'S SKYLIGHT ROOM (342 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-265-8133 - http://www.dannysgrandseapalace.com/), yesterday was Don Schaffer's birthday! Don is booking manager at DANNY'S and his date at the show at the fabulous Lola, who usually can be found at the front desk at DANNY'S greeting folks, taking reservations, and keeping an eye on everything.
IN SEARCH OF
Someone is thinking of writing a book on the amazing life of the late Vanessa Vickers and is looking for information about her in the three to five years before her death. She would need to spend some time doing interviews with those that knew her in that time period and also learn about her website and poster business and other details to round out the picture of her later life. If you can help, please let me know via e-mail and I will forward your name and contact information. And then, just this morning, I had an e-mail from Vanessa Vickers' daughter, Jennifer, who is very interested in obtaining any photos or video footage of Vanessa's performances. If you can help here, let me know as well, and I will forward your name and contact information to her.
CABARET BULLETINS AVAILABLE FOR NYC AREA FROM CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
From time to time we receive information about show cancellations, last-minute cast changes, or other items of interest to cabaret lovers specific to a single geographical location. This special NYC e-mailing list is a 2-month test. If you would like to be a part of this list, please follow the instructions below. The subscription will be automatic. You will receive confirmation. If we feel it is successful, we may extend the program to other areas. At some point during the test period I will be asking those on the list for feedback, suggestions and comments. SHOWS SEEN
One of the reasons why I went to two issues of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE per week (at least on a test basis) is that the single issues were getting so filled with listings stuff, I had no room to mention shows seen and other items of interest. When I was in Provincetown a few weeks back, someone asked me to try to define what cabaret is, in a sentence or two. Well, there are about as many definitions of cabaret as there are cabaret rooms, but my answer was that (at least when speaking of vocal performance) real cabaret is when you feel that the songs being presented were written especially for this show, and the performer is singing them especially for you. If you want to see this done to perfection, see Carolyn Montgomery on Monday night, June 2nd at 8:00 pm at SWING 46 (349 West 46th Street, NYC - 212-262-9554). Or catch Sue Matsuki tonight at 9:00 pm at THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/). Or Baby Jane Dexter, also at THE DUPLEX on Saturday night, May 31st at 9:00 pm. Or Lucille Carr-Kaffashan on Friday night, May 30th at 8:30 pm. If you are a performer, you might be able to deduct the cover on your income tax as tuition! There is something to be learned from all four! I saw a few other shows over the past few days that bear this out as well. Here are five that bear special mention.
Hector Coris is currently appearing at UPSTAIRS AT ROSE'S TURN (55 Grove Street, NYC - 1-212-366-5438 - http://www.rosesturn.com/) with just two shows left on Friday & Saturday, May 30th & 31st at 7:00 pm. This show is one of the funniest seen in some time - with some of the flavor of those Rick Crom reviews that Hector has appear in. In fact, Rick was at the show, and in the absence of a song list, I assumed that many of the songs presented were new additions to the extensive Crom songbook. But nearly all the songs in the show were written by Hector, along with his musical director Paul L. Johnson! Presented with total aplomb by Mr. Coris, assisted by two really cute and talented backup singers (Tripp Pettigrew and Mickey Toogood) it was a show that I hope to see again - it simply zipped by so fast! Coris, who admits to be the only member of his Puerto Rican family who does not speak Spanish, delivers the material with such gusto, you barely have time to catch your breath from laughing so hard. And, while to songs are especially written for this performer, there are plenty of numbers here that can be adapted for other shows, and I certainly see a "Special Material" nomination coming - or actually several. While plans are to repeat the show in the Fall, and possibly recording it, you are urged to catch it right now - we can all use a good laugh these days!
I caught Ruben Flores' show last night, at DANNY'S SKYLIGHT ROOM (342 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-265-8133 - http://www.dannysgrandseapalace.com/) - I saw it when it ran a few months back at the now-closed JUDY'S CHELSEA. It is always great when you see a wonderful show a second time and discover it is even better than you remembered! When I saw it at JUDY'S with a Spanish-speaking friend, I was seated near the front of the room, and both of us were totally captivated by the fantastic vocals. Seated at the very back of the room at DANNY'S, I was able to get a different perspective. Remember what I said above about feeling that the performer is singing especially to you? Well, I have my own gauge when testing that a performance is successful - its the "hand-hold" count. This is best checked from the rear of the room. You just glance around while a romantic ballad is being sung, and see how many couples are holding hands. I lost count - the room was jam packed with a very enthusiastic audience, and they were treated to an evening of joy and "amor." Mexican-born Ruben's "patter" is minimal - partly because he is still learning the intricacies of the English language. But he let the vocals do the talking. And one did not need to understand the intricacies of the Spanish language to realize what Ruben was singing (many of the numbers were in Spanish). He delivers each song with such enthusiasm and joy, you can feel the love and emotion of every lyrics - whatever the language. Musical director Matthew Ward's inspired arrangements and clever song-pairings were a incredible. Ruben has two more shows - Wednesday, June 25th at 9:15 pm and Monday, June 30th, at 7:00 pm. If you want to catch one of the best male vocal debut artists to appear in 2003, make your reservations promptly.
Kate Shindle and Michael Sinclair at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/) have been best friends for several years, and are temporarily roommates while Michael awaits the closing on the apartment he is buying. Their show opens with a marvelous parody song called "I Did Survive," and immediately you become a part of this delightful friendship. Ms. Shindle was once Miss America, and both Kate and Michael have done numerous Broadway and touring performances, so the show is dripping with inside bits about both theater and the pageant circuit. The two swap stories between songs, at times revealing the personal foibles and the embarrassing experiences that roommates and long-time friends often share. Both have wonderful, theater-filling vocals, with just one minor quibble: Mr. Sinclair has the habit of starting some songs very, very softly, then building slowly to a crescendo when reaching the last part of the song. Consequently, there were times when I missed the opening lyrics. It was a light-hearted fun evening, and one I know I will enjoy the next time it comes around.
Jennifer Winegardner made her solo cabaret debut at both DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/) and UPSTAIRS AT ROSE'S TURN (55 Grove Street, NYC - 1-212-366-5438 - http://www.rosesturn.com/), with just one show left, tonight at ROSE'S TURN at 7:00 pm. I have seen her before, as part of the cast in other shows or in benefits. Her show is called $10 COVER, 2 BALLAD MAXIMUM, and features the vastly under-appreciated John McMahon at the piano. In fact, John - along with lyricist Jay Jeffries - contributed one of the funniest songs of the show, "I'm a Star and You're Not." There are only 10 songs in the show - including the promised two ballads. Ms. Winegardner fills the space between songs with some really whacky stories about the alleged development of the show, or lack thereof. The exquisite execution of this gem of a show belies her claim that it was virtually written on the way to the cabaret room, but it is all fun just the same. Jennifer has one of those "third balcony" voices that hardly needs amplification. There are lots of laughs, a few "groaners" and plenty of clever bits that keep the show bouncing along. If you have a chance, catch this one.
I didn't even know about Richard Costa's "Pure Imagination" show at DANNY'S SKYLIGHT ROOM (342 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-265-8133 - http://www.dannysgrandseapalace.com/) last night, until I ran into a "friend of a friend" on Monday night, who asked if I planned to go. Apparently everyone else in town heard about it, because there was not an empty seat in the house (and a few standees) when the lights went down. Mr. Costa is currently appearing in the Broadway show CABARET, and even Debora Gibson (still Debbie, to me) was at one of the front tables. I am of the "Vaughn Monroe generation" so of course when there is a baritone on the stage, I am in Paradise. Add Steven Ray Watkins as musical director, and I'm in Heaven! This was another Male Vocal debut, and except for a few rough edges, it was a real treat. Instead of the usual personal patter, Mr. Costa chose to recite from various monologues and poems, by writers like Christopher Durang, Edward Albee, Walt Whitman and Caryl Churchill. Some chosen works were just a touch too graphic, and if you were a latecomer, and didn't hear the "setup," you might feel uncomfortable, not realizing that Richard was reciting words written by others. Actually, the vocals were so good, and the song choices and arrangements so delightful, he could have dropped many of the recitations with no great loss. Mr. Costa has two shows left in this series, on Friday, May 30th at 7:00 pm and on Sunday, June 1st at 4:00 pm. Go for the vocals, in any case. His are amazing - at times even breathtaking! The opening medley was incredible, and his rendition of Rogers & Hammerstein's "I'm In Love With A Wonderful Guy" was so heartfelt, I was filled with joy on his behalf (and not a little jealous).
There will be more cabaret mini-reviews in the next Mid-Week issue of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE newsletter. I have also been collecting them for a special section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/) where I can expand on my comments and include a photo when possible. I will also be adding several that will not appear in the e-mail CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE issues. I'll let you know when they are posted.

ATTENTION NYC AREA NON-SMOKERS
For years folks have been telling me that they don't go to piano bars because of all the smoke. Well, the NYC Council, at the prodding of our Mayor, passed a draconian anti-smoking law that forbids smoking just about everywhere but in the privacy of your bedroom or on the sidewalk. Consequently, the piano bars are hurting - some telling me their business is down around 25% to 50%. Our apparently brain-dead mayor told us that the loss of business would be more than made up by non-smokers flocking once more to the clubs. Only problem is, non-smokers are also often non-drinkers. In many clubs, the piano bar receipts support in part the cabaret rooms. So, the time has come for all you non-smokers to return to the piano bars - at least until the city powers realize their stupidity and ease up on their rules. (Ever meet a tourist from Europe or Asia that didn't smoke? Well, a lot of foreign tourists are regular piano bar lovers - but not any more!) By the way, I am a non-smoker myself, all my life. But I don't try to run other peoples' lives, and when it comes to smoking, I butt out. Using current logic in vogue, soon they will pass laws against alcohol, red meat, ice cream and butter! Hey guys, I don't want to live to be 100. I'm going to die from something, so let it be something I enjoy!
HELP NEEDED ON A SPECIAL PROJECT
You can help me with a new project. I hope to add a section on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/) listing the names and addresses (and e-mail addresses, if available) of cabaret writers and reviewers around the country and the world. I get many requests for this information, and while I have information for most of the NYC-based writers, I would like to include other scribes as well - including writers in the UK and Australia. Please include the name of the publication or website along with the mailing address (with ZIP codes, etc.). Your help in this project will be appreciated by performers everywhere, I am sure! Just sent the information to press@svhamstra.com. Thanks!

How do you get an item posted in the BREAKING NEWS section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/)? Just e-mail me a press release of at least four paragraphs, giving the complete information on your show, CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available. But please send me complete information - and do not merely send a copy of your flier. By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from the press releases I receive before using the item on my website or in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the four or more paragraphs.

DON'T OVERLOOK THIS OPPORTUNITY TO PROMOTE YOUR WEBSITE!
Cabaret performers can also request a link to their website on the Performers Links pages on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website - you don't need to be a member. You should check this section just to make sure your name is listed and properly linked. See http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/CabaretLinksIndex.shtml While there, see if there is another category on the page that you should be linked through as well - Songwriter, Director, Videographer, etc. You do not have to be a member to have a link on these pages. Please tell your friends about this section of the website - eventually we hope it will become sort of a "Cabaret Yellow Pages" section where you can find hundreds of resources in putting together your show or recording your CD. Remember, you need a website to be linked. An e-mail address is not sufficient.

I have much more to write about, but I have a goal of getting newsletters out by 1:00 pm and that time has already passed. This "twice-a-week" set up is a lot more work than I realized! Once more, I have tried to include a number of special birthday congratulations in this issue, since the countdown has begun for my own personal celebration on July 6th. This year, my birthday is on a Sunday - as usual on a 4th of July weekend. It's also the 13th birthday of CABARET HOTLINE - the premier issue of the print editions of the newsletter was published on July 6, 1990. In fact, I will try to include a birthday wish in each issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE until July 6th let me know if there is a special birthday celebration/shows to write about - and then the real fun begins. Thanks to a special dispensation given me by the divine Karen Mason a few years ago, I am permitted to celebrate my birthday for an entire month! So, attention all bartenders: check your stocks of Seagram 7 Crown - the partying will soon begin! (Will they still love me, when I'm 64?)

Tonight I am headed to DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/) at 6:00 pm for Seth Rudetsky's BROADWAY CHATTERBOX, then, after dinner, Keri Kelsey's show at 9:15 pm at DANNY'S SKYLIGHT ROOM (342 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-265-8133 - http://www.dannysgrandseapalace.com/). If you are in the area, try to catch Kelsey's show. There should be some interesting stories mixed in between the songs - Keri was actually an acrobat/trapese artist with a circus at one time, and her husband, also an ex-circus performer, is now a Hollywood stunt man! I met Keri at the SAN FRANCISCO CABARET CONFERENCE a few years back. This is her only show, and a NYC cabaret debut. I can't wait. If I have the energy, I will then head to DILLON'S (245 West 54th Street, NYC - Resv: 1-212-212-946-5416) for some piano bar fun with Ricky Ritzel and Leslie Anderson. Last Thursday, after visiting DILLON'S, I actually then headed crosstown to REGENTS (317 East 53rd Street, NYC - 212-593-3091 - http://www.RegentsClub.com) for more piano bar - Steven Lowenthal was there and they finally chased us out of the place at 1:20 am! Do I hear BRANDY'S PIANO BAR (235 East 84th Street, NYC - 1-212-744-4949 - http://www.brandyspianobarnyc.com/) calling me north? Hey, its a tough job, but someone has to support these piano bar performers - it might as well be me! And that is just about the way it was.

Hugs & Stuff,

STU
