CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE #030602 - Part 1 - Monday, June 9, 2003
Since 1990 Your First, Best, and Only Complete Source of Cabaret News

If it's anything to do with cabaret, you'll probably read it here first!

This is a Monday Issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE - testing a new twice-a-week issue, at least until the normal slow-down of cabaret in the summer months, when many rooms, especially the major ones, go dark. The Monday issue will include the regular Major Rooms listings for around the world, and will also give information on all the banner ads running on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/). The mid-week issue will concentrate more on news, breaking stories and notes and mini-reviews of shows seen - things I have not had space for in our once-a-week issues. I look forward to receiving your comments and suggestions on this new system.

I am getting this issue off really early today because it is an especially busy day for me. You see, today we get our new air conditioner for the apartment. It has been many years since I lived in apartment with air conditioning - my previous living space did not have adequate wiring, with actually a single 2-plug outlet for the whole space. Fortunately, it has been a fairly cool spring, but later this week we are expecting temperatures in the 80s. When I return I have a number of items to add to the BREAKING NEWS page, and another report from the Sydney Australia Cabaret Convention to add as well. Finally, I have a "triple header" at DON'T TELL MAMA tonight, and if I have the energy, I want to see what Jim Caruso's CAST PARTY at THE KING KONG ROOM is all about around midnight.

Its also time for your comments and suggestions regarding the new twice-a-week CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE e-mail newsletters. We might cut back to once-a-week after June 21st until Labor day, but if you like this setup, or can't stand all this extra information, let me know.

IT'S THAT TIME AGAIN! ASKING FOR YOUR SUPPORT

The new CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE membership year starts on July 6th, but I have begun accepting early membership contributions for the 2003-2004 year, and now the official 2003 Membership Drive has begun. If you appreciate what I am doing, and would like to see CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE not simply continue, but also grow, please consider becoming a member. If you join this week, you get an extra month of benefits, including offering your cabaret CD on the website! Over 30 folks have already signed up for 2003-2004. You can join for just $20 (SILVER LEVEL), or get special discounts and additional benefits with a $75 (GOLD) donation (20% discount on banners, etc.), or become a sponsoring member at higher levels.

Current members are invited to renew their membership early as well. Current GOLD members may deduct their 20% discount to renew their GOLD status for just $60 instead of $75, and current SILVER members may apply their 2002-2003 donation to upgrade to a GOLD membership for just $55 (providing they haven't already applied the rebate to a banner ad). This offer is only good while your current membership is still active - which means the discount/rebate offer expires on July 6, 2003.

And, if we reach the goal of 400 members for 2003-2004, I will finally have MEMBERSHIP CARDS printed and sent to all members, allowing folks to offer discounts to CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE members without a lot of hassle!

For information on becoming a contributing member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, check at http://svhamstra.com/Membership.shtml or else just send me a note at membership@svhamstra.com with the single word "membership" in the subject line, and I'll send all the details. You can even send your donation by credit card via PayPal - http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/PayPalPayment.shtml - of you make your donation by check, please make the check payable simply to Stu Hamstra and send to 676A Ninth Avenue #120, New York, NY 10036.

Please remember, membership donations and banner advertising are our only means of income. Without your support, the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/), read worldwide, and the regular newsletters, sent to nearly 2,500 subscribers twice a week, would not be possible.

I'll be sending out a special letter tomorrow to all subscribers with more information about membership in CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE.

HERE A CLUB, THERE A CLUB, EVERYWHERE A NEW CLUB!

Create a void, and it will soon be filled. For those here in NYC bemoaning the loss of several cabaret room (ARCI'S PLACE, JUDY'S CHELSEA, FIREBIRD, etc.), look what's happening. Already opened in the past few months are: UPSTAIRS @ RED (356 West 44th Street, NYC), Monday Night Cabaret at KING KONG ROOM at the Supper Club (240 West 47th Street, NYC - 1-212-921-1904 - http://www.KingKongRoom.com/), a refurbished DILLON'S (245 West 54th Street, NYC - 212-307-9797), REGENTS CLUB (317 East 53rd Street, NYC - 212-593-3091 - http://www.RegentsClub.com) and a soon-to-be-opened MAMA ROSE'S (219 Second Avenue, NYC)! Add to this list the STANHOPE PARK HYATT NEW YORK (995 Fifth Avenue, NYC - 212-650-4737 - http://stanhopepark.hyatt.com/), which opened late last year and it looks like cabaret is bouncing back to me! Add to this another new NYC club which is in the works - location not finalized - and 2003 should be a banner year in NYC cabaret! Other new clubs are happening elsewhere around the country as well, as evidenced by the next item. And in Australia, they are experiencing a cabaret-renewal as well!

HELP NEEDED ON A SPECIAL PROJECT

You can help me with a new project. I hope to add a section on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/) listing the names and addresses (and e-mail addresses, if available) of cabaret writers and reviewers around the country and the world. I get many requests for this information, and while I have information for most of the NYC-based writers, I would like to include other scribes as well - including writers in the UK and Australia. Please include the name of the publication or website along with the mailing address (with ZIP codes, etc.). Your help in this project will be appreciated by performers everywhere, I am sure! Just sent the information to press@svhamstra.com. Thanks!

SYDNEY CABARET CONVENTION REPORTS ON THE WEBSITE

Thanks to the hard work of our man in Australia, David M. Schwartz, a full report of the 2003 SYDNEY CABARET CONVENTION can be found on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/). Five reports are already posted, and David just sent me the 5th and final report this morning - I'll try to get it up on the website later today or tomorrow. These reports are not just convention summaries, but in many ways are essays on the art of cabaret, and the state of cabaret in Australia.

CONGRATULATIONS AND THANKS TO J.D. KESSLER

CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE echoes the cabaret performers at CABARET WEST (http://www.cabaretwest.org/) in sending a special thank you to J.D. Kessler for his years of support of the cabaret community as booking manager for so many years at THE CINEGRILL in Hollywood. Mr. Kessler has also be active in leading workshops, seminars and cabaret instruction over the years. With the change of management at THE CINEGRILL, Mr. Kessler has left the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel and accepted a position as food & beverage manager at THE HOLLYWOOD INN in Hollywood, CA. I had the privilege of meeting Mr. Kessler several times on my visits to the Los Angeles area, and was truly impressed by his dedication to cabaret, and the high standards he applied to THE CINEGRILL.

WHY ADVERTISE ON CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE ?

One of the most difficult things for a new performer to do is expanding a following from just family and friends. The best way to do this is to get your name seen and recognized by as many folks as possible, and there is no better (and no cheaper) way to do this than a banner ad on CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE. Over 6,000 quality, cabaret-loving folks visit our website each day - and they look at on average of 6 or 7 pages each. Banner ads are displayed at random in two places on nearly all 2,500+ pages. This means your ad could be seen as many as 3,000 times each day, 21,000 times each week!

In addition, those running banners get mentioned every week in the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE e-mail newsletter (current circulation nearly 2,500) as long as the banner is running. That means nearly 5,000 times more that folks are exposed to your name. Plus, your advertising dollars will help continue to promote the art of cabaret on the website, publish the e-mail newsletter, and make visits to various cabaret events and performances locally and around the country.

BANNER AD spaces on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website ARE selling out fast for the month of June. Keep in mind that I limit the ads to 20 banners per week, so if you plan to order a banner, reserve your banner space as soon as possible.

For information on banner ads, check out the banner information page on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/BannerHere.shtml), or simply send me a note at banners@svhamstra.com with the single word "Banner" in the subject line and I'll send all the details.

A WORD FROM OUR SPONSORS

REMEMBER: Each weekly issue of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE newsletter includes a rundown of all the banner advertisers on the website - and these items will be repeated as long as the banner is running. There is a more complete article on nearly all these items in the BREAKING NEWS section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/).

Cabaret Horoscopes on CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE - just in fun, but each week we will give a special cabaret prediction especially for your astrological sign. This will be an added feature, similar to the "Thought to Ponder" and "You Know You Are Getting Old When" items on my BREAKING NEWS page.

CONGRATULATIONS TO JONI RAPP

Joni Rapp was a regular on the NYC piano bar/cabaret scene years back, and even owned a club called RAPPSODY in the Village. She now lives in Massachusetts, but she was back in NYC on Sunday May 18th at RUBYFRUIT ON HUDSON (531 Hudson Street, NYC - 212-929-3343), with Ian Herman at the piano. After 4 years away in Cape Cod, her old fans surprised her with a wonderful reception. Even with a $15.00 cover charge, there was a waiting list! While in town, she managed to arrange for the remastering of her OWN single from the 70s show, ONE NIGHT STAND. Joni wrote the words and music and always does it in her act. RUBYFRUIT will be the first club to have the CD their on Juke box, with others to follow. She will be releasing it to the public in about late June or early July. Anyone interested can get a copy by sending a note to JoniRapp@aol.com and she'll get back to you with details.

COMING NEXT ISSUE

We will be sending out the Mid-Week issue later this week which will include reports/reviews on shows seen, as well as more news items, more cabaret listings and a rundown of new BREAKING NEWS items added to the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/) since the last mid-week issue. Stay tuned - we just passed the 2500-page mark on the website and it keeps growing, and growing, and growing. We are very close to reaching 2,500 subscribers for the newsletter as well! More folks than ever before are visiting the website. On March 1st had to upgrade my website contract in order to handle the extra traffic received in recent months. Even though I doubled the amount in the new contract, I am already using nearly 85% of the total bandwidth allotted! I might have to upgrade one more step in the fall to handle all this extra traffic. Folks all over the world are interested in cabaret! Our stats show visits from folks in Russia, Egypt, China, Japan, Korea, Africa and many countries in Central & South America!

Once again, in this issue, I have tried to include a few special birthday congratulations, since the countdown has begun for my own personal celebration on July 6th. In fact, I will try to include a birthday wish in each issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE until July 6th let me know if there is a special birthday celebration/show to write about.

This year, my birthday is on a Sunday - as usual on a 4th of July weekend. It's also the 13th birthday of CABARET HOTLINE - the premier issue of the original print version of the newsletter was published on July 6, 1990. In any case, July 6 will mark the start of a full month of celebrating. Thanks to a special dispensation given me by the divine Ms. Karen Mason a few years ago, I am permitted to celebrate my birthday through August 5th! So, attention all bartenders: check your stocks of Seagram 7 Crown - the partying will soon begin! (Will they still love me, when I'm 64?)

Now its time to head to the store for the AC unit - it has taken some time to find the right unit, since it has to slide into a cutout through the wall, and be of the right strength to cool four rooms. I can imagine what the electric bill is going to be next month! Tonight I have reservations for three shows at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/): 6:00 pm THE CHALKS (those three crazy ladies that tore up the stage at the MAC Awards this year), then Stephanie Harwood at 8:00 pm and finally Erich Bergen at 10:00 pm. I'll let you know in the issue on Thursday if I survive the night!

And that is just about the way it was.

Hugs & Stuff,

STU
