CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE #030701 - MID-WEEK - Thursday, July 3, 2003
Since 1990 Your First, Best, and Only Complete Source of Cabaret News

If it's anything to do with cabaret, you'll probably read it here first!

This is the "MID-WEEK CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE," part two of the issue we sent out on Monday. We are testing a new twice-a-week issue. The MONDAY issue included the regular "Major Rooms" & "Majors in the Minors" listings for cabarets around the world, and also has information on all the banner ads running on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website. This "MID-WEEK" issue will concentrate more on news, breaking stories and notes on shows seen.

I am simply overwhelmed with the response so far in our annual membership drive. We have already surpassed the 130-member mark. Last year at this time we had about 100 renewals and new members for the 2002-2003 year. But even more thrilling is the notes and letters accompanying the checks and PayPal payments. Each week I send out nearly 5,000 E-mail Newsletters (2 issues) and I must admit, I often wonder if folks realize the effort involved in keeping up this output. But, from your comments, I get the message loud and clear!

MEMBER DISCOUNTS ON RENEWALS EXPIRE ON SUNDAY

Current members are urged to renew their membership to CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE before Sunday, July 6th. Current GOLD members may deduct their current 20% discount to renew their GOLD status for just $60 instead of $75, and current SILVER members may apply their 2002-2003 donation to upgrade to a GOLD membership for just $55 (providing they haven't already applied the rebate to a banner ad). This offer is only good while your current membership is still active - all memberships expire on July 5, 2003.

After July 6th, you can join for just $20 (SILVER LEVEL), or get special discounts and additional benefits with a $75 (GOLD) donation (20% discount on banners, etc.), or become a sponsoring member at higher levels.

For information on becoming a contributing member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, check at http://svhamstra.com/Membership.shtml or else just send me a note at membership@svhamstra.com with the single word "membership" in the subject line, and I'll send all the details. You can even send your donation by credit card via PayPal - http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/PayPalPayment.shtml - if you make your donation by check, please make the check payable simply to Stu Hamstra and send to 676A Ninth Avenue #120, New York, NY 10036.

A big thank-you to all the folks who have already joined or rejoined for 2003-2004. Your membership donations and banner advertising are our only income. Without your support, the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website, read worldwide, and the regular newsletters, sent to nearly 2,500 subscribers, would not be possible. From the gifts received already I have been able to upgrade some badly out-of-date software used in building the website and creating the newsletter. Your gifts have also helped in the purchase of an air-conditioner, which now allows me to work in comfort each day - for the first time in several summers.

Any show (even if you don't run a banner - even if you are not a member) that offers at least a $5 discount (or 2-for-1 or 1/2 cover) to CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE members will have a listing on a special page on the website and will be included in a special section the MONDAY LISTINGS issue of the newsletter. The shows offering discounts may be grouped by venue to save space.

This is in addition to any rebate or member discount you might be entitled to.

This offer starts on July 6th. To be eligible, you must send me your flier and/or other promotional material showing the discount offer. I will use that information for the website and newsletter listing. Please confirm that you have sent me the material via e-mail so I can watch for it.

Suggestion: Be sure to mention the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE discount in a posting on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE MESSAGE BOARD - it is free, and is just one more way you can promote your show. On your promotional material a mention of the website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/) would be appreciated, but is not necessary.

Be sure you check with the venue where your show is being performed, to make sure that these discounts are permitted.

NEED TO PROMOTE YOUR SHOW THIS SUMMER?

With Cabaret Scenes Magazine doing another "double issue" for August & September, a lot of folks have contacted us looking for a place to advertise their summer shows. If you are looking for the ideal place to promote your show, you too should consider the premier cabaret-only publication in the world: CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE! Over 6,000 quality, cabaret-loving folks visit our website each day - and they look at on average of 6 or 7 pages each. Banner ads are displayed at random in two places on nearly all 2,500+ pages. This means your ad could be seen as many as 3,000 times each day, 21,000 times each week!

In addition, those running banners get mentioned every week in the Monday issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE e-mail newsletter (current circulation nearly 2,500) as long as the banner is running. Even more important, you can run a banner for 2 weeks on CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE for just $80 - in full color - with a "live link" to your website, if applicable. That's before any member rebates or discounts.

BANNER AD spaces on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website are currently available for the months of July and August. Keep in mind, I limit the ads to 20 banners per week, so if you plan to order a banner, reserve your banner space as soon as possible.

For information on banner ads, check out the banner information page on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/BannerHere.shtml), or simply send me a note at banners@svhamstra.com with the single word "Banner" in the subject line and I'll send all the details.

CONGRATULATIONS TO JOHN BUCCHINO!

John is currently performing a selection of his songs on Wednesdays in June at 9:00 pm at THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/) but even more exciting, his very popular song "Grateful" was heard recently by Julie Andrews and she actually wrote a children's picture book based on the song - to be released in August! John also has a new CD featuring a collection of his music titled "Grateful: The Songs of John Bucchino," performed by the likes of Patti LuPone, Art Garfunkel and Judy Collins. You can purchase the CD at his show (there is a $15 cover, 2-drink minimum - reservations urged).

SHOWS SEEN

One of the reasons why I went to two issues of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE per week (at least on a test basis) is that the single issues were getting so filled with listings stuff, I had no room to mention shows seen and other items of interest. I saw a few shows over the past week or so that bear special mention.

Reagan Stone made her cabaret debut at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/) last night (July 2nd) and I was so happy to have been there - and am happy to be the first reviewer to see the show. With David Brunetti as musical director and Scott Barnes as director, Ms. Stone was in good hands! Her show was a delightful presentation of cabaret standards, with a few new songs interspersed. But it was Ms. Stone's vocals and performance that really thrilled me. Clear and true to the lyric, her very defiant rendering of Jason Robert Brown's "I'm Not Afraid" was one of the highlights of the show. As Ms. Stone explained near the end of the hour, she is suffering from a progressive retinal disease, and hoped to raise awareness of this malady through her performances. Always bright as sunshine, and occasionally slipping into her native Southern accent, she charmed the audience with her quick wit and clever patter. Her closing song was David Friedman's "Help Is On The Way." This is one debut I will long remember.

Reagan Stone has two more shows scheduled at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/) - Sunday, July 13th at 5:00 pm and Friday, August 1st at 7:00 pm. I strongly suggest you make a reservation soon - once word gets out about this terrific show, seats will be hard to find.

While growing up, I always enjoyed the Perry Como show - especially his "laid-back" style of singing. Brent Winborn, who appeared recently at THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/), has a different vocal sound, but that same, easygoing attitude. His show was called "Welcome to the 60s," and featured Rick Jensen as musical director. It was a delightful tour of an era that I doubt Mr. Winborn actually remembers, but I certainly do - I finished college in the early 60s, was driving a car a lot, with the radio always on. Mr. Winborn's bright personality always carried the show along. A particularly inventive "Rainy Days and Mondays" sung a Capella, with Jensen singing all the doo-wop harmonies on backup, was a masterpiece. The "Hair Medley" combined 60s tunes from the show with a song from the current "Hairspray." The much longer "British Invasion" medley was particularly evocative of that era. It was a fun-filled hour of memories, combined with some handsome vocals sung by a handsome guy.

Mr. Winborn will be returning with this show later this year - keep an eye out for it.

Find a song with a Nashville sound, and Teri Lynn Paul will make it come alive! She did just that in her tribute show to Elvis Presley, wish we originally saw last year, but had two "by popular demand" outings at THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/) recently. With the ever amazing Dick Gallagher at the piano, and back-up vocals by Ave Lindon and Wendy Russell and Carlo Pellettieri on cello, the show evoked the Presley era without attempting to reproduce his unique style and sound. The beginning of the Presley era was a sort of milestone in my live - I switched as a freshman in high school from playing Pat Boone to Elvis on the juke box at the local milk bar, and was one of the first kids in High School to own "Heartbreak Hotel." So, following so closely on the 60s show by Mr. Winborn in this same room, I sort of relived my childhood even as I was approaching senior citizen status! All those tunes I loved were here, including "Jail House Rock," "Are You Lonesome Tonight?" "Unchained Melody, " Surrender" and more. All song with depth and love, interspersed with anecdotes of Presley's life and it's ultimate tragedy.

I loved this show - both times I saw it - and look forward to its return some day soon. You should be doing the same, since it is well worth seeing again.

Songwriter Tim DiPasqua takes the cabaret stage from time to time to perform some of our favorite DiPasqua songs, and present some new ones. He did just that recently at THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/). Tim's songs are usually quite personal and reflective - he really opens his heart in his writings. He has a "Joni Mitchellesque" style that empowers each of his creations with a life if its own - so singable, so memorable, and at times so haunting. While he writes songs about people he knows or met, he actually writes about people we all have known and met. The universality of these songs assures me that they will be with us for some time to come. Along with Michael Blanco on bass, Tim opened with what was to me a new song called "Tokyo," ("My best friend is in Tokyo") and I may be imagining things, but there seemed to be an Asian flavor throughout the entire set, including the song "The Possibility" ("East is East - West is West"). Another song, "A Man and a Man" went to the heart of the differences between opposite-sex and same-sex relationships. Tim is building a new CD, and hopefully most of this set of songs will receive the wide distribution they deserve. Meantime, one can look forward to another solo showcase in the near future.

Amy Wolk exploded onto the stage at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/) in her debut show "Different for Girls" recently, with a duo of songs that split the ceiling open and immediately took me prisoner. It has been a stunning first six months for cabaret debuts in NYC in 2003 - both male and female, and I asked myself at the end of this show, "where does all this new talent come from every year." Someone once said that if you tilt the US one way, all that was loose would fall into California. I say, if you tilt it the other way, all that are talented fall into NYC! Dedicated to her idols, Wonder Woman and Miss Piggy, the show set out to show that life is different for girls, but is Ms. Wolk seemed to imply that girls were at a disadvantage, she only need to look as far as her own fantastic talents to refute that argument. With astounding musical direction by Steven Ray Watkins, and evenhanded direction by Lennie Watts, Ms. Wolk did everything right - and then some. You simply must see this show - what happens on stage can hardly be expressed in mere words!

The amazing Amy Wolk has three more performances at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/) of "Different for Girls," on Sundays, July 6th, 13th and 20th, all at 8:00 pm. I'm going to see it again - and I hope you take a chance on a newcomer and catch this show as well!

There will be more cabaret mini-reviews in the next Mid-Week issue of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE newsletter. I have also been collecting them for a special section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/) where I can expand on my comments and include a photo when possible. I will also be adding several that will not appear in the e-mail CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE issues. I'll let you know when they are posted.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, U.S.A.!

I've been waiting all month to include this one. One of the stories my mom told me when I was a mere child was that I was supposed to be born on the 4th of July but the stork was frightened away by the fireworks and flew around for two days before delivering me! Any way, happy 227th Birthday (if I have the math right) to the grand old USA! (If I don't have my math right, I know both Jon Delfin or George Winters will send me the correct answer right away - they devote their lives to find errors in the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE newsletter!).

GET YOUR MESSAGE OUT - FOR FREE!

Please don't miss out on another feature of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/) - the MESSAGE BOARD - where anyone, from anywhere, can post information about their shows, CDs or other cabaret-related event. You can also post requests and questions about cabaret performances, finding material, and share your thoughts and ideas of cabaret. You don't have to be a member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, you don't have to fill out a form, you don't have to give a DNA sample, you don't need to remember one of those dreaded passwords. All you need to do is follow the rules - clearly posted on the board - before you make a posting. Please use your real name. I will remove your message if I deem it inappropriate. In other words, if you want to spread false rumors, vent your sour grapes, express your hatred and envy, find another Message Board - believe me, there are actually a few message boars out there that specialize in this! By the way, nearly 70% of visitors to the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/) visit the MESSAGE BOARD. MESSAGE BOARD sponsorship is occasionally available, so please write for details.

How do you get an item posted in the BREAKING NEWS section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/)? Just e-mail me a press release of at least four paragraphs, giving the complete information on your show, CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available. But please send me complete information - and do not merely send a copy of your flier. By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from the press releases I receive before using the item on my website or in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the four or more paragraphs.

DON'T OVERLOOK THIS OPPORTUNITY TO PROMOTE YOUR WEBSITE!

Cabaret performers can also request a link to their website on the Performers Links pages on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website - you don't need to be a member. You should check this section just to make sure your name is listed and properly linked. See http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/CabaretLinksIndex.shtml

While there, see if there is another category on the page that you should be linked through as well - Songwriter, Director, Videographer, etc. You do not have to be a member to have a link on these pages. Please tell your friends about this section of the website - eventually we hope it will become sort of a "Cabaret Yellow Pages" section where you can find hundreds of resources in putting together your show or recording your CD.

Remember, you need a website to be linked. An e-mail address is not sufficient.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME

The countdown is nearly over for my own personal celebration on July 6th. This is the last issue of the 2002-2003 membership year, and the last issue in my 64th year on earth. It's also the 13th birthday of CABARET HOTLINE - the premier issue of the print editions of the newsletter was published on July 6, 1990.

My birthday always falls on or near the 4th of July weekend so it is difficult for me to have a party or other special event. Everyone seems to flee NYC that weekend. But, since my birthday is on a Sunday, what better place for me to celebrate than at REGENTS (317 East 53rd Street, NYC - 212-593-3091 - http://www.RegentsClub.com/) for brunch. And on Sunday, July 6th, the performers at the brunch show are the award winning (and totally insane) duo, Karen Mack & Michael Holland! If you want to help me celebrate, you better make a reservation right away. The brunch shows have been selling out lately. If you mention CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE when you make your reservation, you will get a free glass of wine when you order brunch (there is no cover charge, and the cost for brunch is just $13.50 per person).

Here are some of the other shows I plan to be seeing this weekend, in case you wish to join me on my "cabaret rounds."

July 4th - MACY'S FIREWORKS on NYs East River around 8:30 pm. Not really cabaret, but what the heck!

July 5th - Yoko Hoshina at 6:30 pm at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/) and then downtown to see BABY JANE DEXTER at 9:00 pm at THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/)

July 6th: After brunch at REGENTS (317 East 53rd Street, NYC - 212-593-3091 - http://www.RegentsClub.com) and maybe catching Amy Wolk one more time at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/), I plan to take my annual "piano bar Birthday tour" on Sunday night - always a sneaky way to get a few free drinks, visiting DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/), DANNY'S SKYLIGHT ROOM (342 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-265-8133 - http://www.dannysgrandseapalace.com/), THE DUPLEX (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/), ROSE'S TURN (55 Grove Street, NYC - 1-212-366-5438 - http://www.rosesturn.com/), BRANDY'S PIANO BAR (235 East 84th Street, NYC - 1-212-744-4949 - http://www.brandyspianobarnyc.com/) and probably will end my night back at REGENTS (317 East 53rd Street, NYC - 212-593-3091 - http://www.RegentsClub.com) with maybe a few stops in between. Anyone who wants to share cabfare with me is welcome to join. Alert the medevac helicopter to be on stand-by!

July 7th: RICK JENSEN at 7:00 pm at THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/) and then Richard Skipper in "An Evening With Carol Channing:" at THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/)at 9:00 pm.

IT'S TIME TO GO - MORE ON MONDAY

Time to mail this issue off - and one more plug. I hope a lot of you will sign on as CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE members this year, The first year we tried this we almost hit 300 members, and this past year we passed the 350 member mark (nearly a 20% increase). A similar increase this year would bring us over 400 members.

But most of all, your membership donation is a way for you to encourage me in my efforts to promote the art of cabaret, and support this newsletter and the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/). Your continued support is truly appreciated! You have no idea what it feels like to open my mail - or check my e-mailbox - and find a membership donation from folks around the country and around the world. Each donation gives me tangible evidence that my efforts are appreciated.

Tonight I am off to see Seth Rudetsky interview two performers from THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/) at 6:00 pm, and then Tom D'Angora in the same club at 8:00 pm. It's nearly 4:00 pm, and I have been at this computer since 7:30 am! No time for a nap today, so if you seem me around looking a little sleepy-eyed, please understand

And that is just about the way it was.

Hugs & Stuff,

STU
