CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE #030702 - MID-WEEK - Thursday, July 10, 2003
Since 1990 Your First, Best, and Only Complete Source of Cabaret News
If it's anything
to do with cabaret, you'll probably read it here first!
This is the
"MID-WEEK CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE," part two of the issue we sent out
on Monday. We are testing a new twice-a-week issue. The MONDAY issue
included the regular "Major Rooms" & "Majors in the Minors" listings
for cabarets around the world, and also has information on all the
banner ads running on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website. This "MID-WEEK"
issue will concentrate more on news, breaking stories and notes on
shows seen.
Please note
- all back issues are posted on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website
(http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/)
- even ones from 1999!
A huge thank
you to all the many folks who have joined or rejoined as members of
CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE in just a few short weeks! Rest assured that
I have read every letter, card and email sent with you membership
donation, but its just about impossible to answer every one personally.
If you send a special request or question with your gift at least
a week ago but have not received a personal response, please let me
know right away - after all, I am working for you and on your behalf.
Every donation received is acknowledged in about 48 hours with a form
letter. Please check that the amount on the acknowledgement agrees
with the donation sent (I have sent out over 150 so far, and I am
not infallible).
About a dozen
folks have sent in checks made out to CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE rather
than simply Stu Hamstra, and I have been returning them with an explanation.

This year
we will issue CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE MEMBERSHIP CARDS that can be
used for show discounts where offered. Temporary "cards" will be e-mailed
this weekend to all 2003-2004 Members, while we update our mailing
list in order to send out membership cards to all members and the
free CDs to GOLD & above members, hopefully next week. Any show (even
if you don't run a banner - even if you are not a member) that offers
at least a $5 discount (or 2-for-1 or 1/2 cover) to CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE members will have a listing on a special page on the website
and will be included in a special section the MONDAY LISTINGS issue
of the newsletter. The shows offering discounts may be grouped by
venue to save space.
Plus, if
you place a banner ad on the website, and also offer at least a show
discount to CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE members, you can take an extra
5% discount when you pay for your banner via PayPal in addition to
the current 5% discount. This is in addition to any rebate or member
discount you might be entitled to.
This offer
started on July 6th. To be eligible, you must send me your flier and/or
other promotional material showing the discount offer. I will use
that information for the website and newsletter listing. Please confirm
that you have sent me the material via e-mail so I can watch for it.
Be sure you
check with the venue where your show is being performed, to make sure
that these discounts are permitted.

this is the big one for Irv - the one that gets him that coveted 50%
discount on the subways and busses here in NYC - I have to wait another
whole year for mine. Irv isn't a performer - just a great fan of live
entertainment, be it Broadway, Opera or Cabaret. Congrats, Old Timer
- I'm right behind you!

CHRISTMAS COMES IN JULY IN
CHICAGO
GENTRY ON
STATE (440 North State Street, Chicago, IL - 312-836-0933 - http://www.gentryofchicago.com/)

for one of the most amazing theater organizations in Chicago as well

economic situation.

NEED TO PROMOTE YOUR SHOW
THIS SUMMER?
Plenty of
BANNER AD spaces on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website are currently
available for the balance of July and the month August. Then things
begin to heat up for September & October. With Cabaret Scenes Magazine
doing another "double issue" for August & September, a lot of folks
have contacted us looking for a place to advertise their September
shows. Keep in mind, I limit the ads to 20 banners per week, so if
you plan to order a banner, reserve your banner space as soon as possible.
If you are
looking for the ideal place to promote your show, you too should consider
the premier cabaret-only publication in the world: CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE! Over 6,000 quality, cabaret-loving folks visit our website
each day - and they look at on average of 6 or 7 pages each. Banner
ads are displayed at random in two places on nearly all 2,500+ pages.
This means your ad could be seen as many as 3,000 times each day,
21,000 times each week!
In addition,
those running banners get mentioned every week in the Monday issue
of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE e-mail newsletter (current circulation nearly
2,500) as long as the banner is running. Even more important, you
can run a banner for 2 weeks on CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE for just $80
- in full color - with a "live link" to your website, if applicable.
That's before any member rebates or discounts.
For information
on banner ads, check out the banner information page on the CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/BannerHere.shtml),
or simply send me a note at banners@svhamstra.com
with the single word "Banner" in the subject line and I'll send all
the details.
VENUE EXPANDS - ADDING THIRD
CABARET SPACE
DON'T TELL
MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/)
has discontinued the happy hour and with added lighting and sound,
is using the piano bar area for early cabaret performances, and after
9:30 pm or so each night, the space converts back to a piano bar.
This will permit the club to present more than 30 additional cabaret
show each month, alleviating some of the cabaret space shortage around
town.
SHOWS SEEN
One of the
reasons why I went to two issues of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE per week
(at least on a test basis) is that the single issues were getting
so filled with listings stuff, I had no room to mention shows seen
and other items of interest. I saw a few shows over the past week
or so that bear special mention.
Mary Foster
Conklin opened her new show, "Caught in the Trance," featuring the
songs of Matt Dennis last night at DANNY'S SKYLIGHT ROOM (342 West
46th Street, NYC - 1-212-265-8133 - http://www.dannysgrandseapalace.com/)
and I start off with this review because this could be one show all
of you would like to see, and there are just three more performances.
I have always been a big fan of Ms. Conklin. She always presents and
entertaining show, and this show was another delightful, happy and
enjoyable performance. I must add that the band, made up of John DiMartino
at the piano, with Martin Wind at bass, Tony Romano on guitar and
Ron Vincent on drums added a super sparkle to a glittering show. Mary
Foster Conklin's admiration of the songs of Matt Dennis permeates
the show, and the intensive research and developmental work that went
into this presentation is easily apparent. But it is in the performance
that Mary's love of the songs becomes most evident. Her introductions
are detailed and interesting, and when she sings, you can feel her
love for the material. The mini-medley of "The Night We Called It
a Day" and "Show Me the Way to Get Out of this World" was timely and
performed adeptly. Mary even dug out some unpublished lyrics to "Everything
Happens to Me," and has an amazing tale about tracking down the Dennis/Troup
song "Learn to Love." If you love your jazz with attention to the
lyric, here is a jazz show for you! As Ms. Conklin says near the end
of the show, don't wait for the Centennial - relive these songs now!
Jazz vocalist
Mary Foster Conklin appears in "Caught in the Trance" at DANNY'S SKYLIGHT
ROOM (342 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-265-8133 - http://www.dannysgrandseapalace.com/)
for three more nights, tonight Thursday, July 10th, and Thursday &
Friday, July 23rd & 24th - all shows are at 9:15 pm. Cover charge
is $15 with a $10 food/drink minimum.
I am always
amazed that so few performers find the time to see cabaret shows that
feature songwriters performing their own works. Rick Jensen is performing
his own songs, some brand new, some more familiar, at THE DUPLEX CABARET
THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/)
on Mondays in June, and if you are a performer that wants to find
new material - and learn about how the song came into being - this
is the show you should be attending. Mr. Jensen has always been a
favorite of mine - and this time around, with an emphasis on love
songs and romance, Rick scored again! The show is called "While Love
Holds On," and the selections, for the most part, were a personal
look at the romantic side of the writer. The show opens with an amusing
tribute to NYC, "Tonight, New York City, as seen through the eyes
of a boy from Minnesota. A brand new one, "Carrie" should soon be
found on many song cabaret lists. Another beautiful ballad is "Dusty
Rose," which make the interesting observation that "anger comes from
love." Guest Debbie Magidson does back-up vocals during many of the
songs, and then steps to center stage to belt out "I've Got To Sing!"
- the exciting and show-stopping anthem that Mr. Jensen wrote for
the MAC Award show, and sung at that time by Anne Steele along with
the vocal group UPTOWN EXPRESS. Mr. Steve Bargonetti on guitar has
become a regular in Rick's shows - his contagious smile and talented
string-strokes adding depth to the performance. Best line of the night,
especially to a computer-lover mike me (insert "geek" if you wish)
was from the final song, "Gospel According To The New Age," namely
getting in touch with your "innermost server host."
Rick Jensen's
show "While Love Holds On" continues at THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE
(61 Christopher Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/)
for three more Mondays at 7:00 pm, July 14th, 21st & 28th. Ms. Magidson
appears as guest on the 14th, and Anne Steele on the 21st & 28th.
Tom D'Angora
is a self-confessed "show queen" and is obsessed with divas, even
lesser-known divas. His show, which recently previewed at DON'T TELL
MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/)
was called "Diva's I've Done" should return soon, and hopefully the
management will provide more space between seats, since most of the
audience was rolling in the aisles throughout! Mr. Angora chose four
divas to salute, with rollicking songs, parodies and tributes dedicated
to each, with the audience asked to vote by secret ballot at the end
for their favorite diva. The choice was Liza Minnelli, Maya Days,
Ellen Green and Marla Schaffel. Mr. D'Angora describes his obsession
with each of these Broadway musical performers, with a brief ode to
Princess Di as well. The show was filled with Broadway musical theater
inside gossip and stories that flew by like explosive grenades, accompanied
by large photos of Mr. D'Angora with each of the stars. Tom's infectious
charm and enthusiasm is unbounded. This was his first cabaret show
- but he promises it will not be his last - and I hope he lives up
to that promise. Who won the vote? Well, the tally of the "secret
ballot" showed the winner to be Maya Days - who just happened to be
in the audience. Such a coincidence!
Watch for
this show's return - and be ready to laugh till it hurts.
There will
be more cabaret mini-reviews in the next Mid-Week issue of the CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE newsletter. I have also been collecting them for a
special section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/)
where I can expand on my comments and include a photo when possible.
I will also be adding several that will not appear in the e-mail CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE issues. I'll let you know when they are posted.

MAMA ROSE'S PLANS FOR AUGUST
OPENING
Lennie Watts
and crew have been spending the past few weeks preparing the newest
cabaret room in town, MAMA ROSE'S (219 Second Avenue, NYC), as well
as interviewing possible acts. They are hoping to have everything
ready for a Grand Opening in August. This will be the third cabaret
space opened by the Pham family - the other two spaces are DON'T TELL
MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/)
and UPSTAIRS AT ROSE'S TURN (55 Grove Street, NYC - 1-212-366-5438
- http://www.rosesturn.com/).
Lennie is still looking for acts to play in the room in the fall season
- you can contact him at bookingmamaroses@aol.com.
He's is looking for top-notch established acts to play the room -
think ARCI'S PLACE, EIGHTY-EIGHT'S, etc. However, some nights each
week will be available for "emerging" acts as well, so if you want
the details on how to book your act at MAMA ROSE'S, drop him a line.

post requests and questions about cabaret performances, finding material,
and share your thoughts and ideas of cabaret. You don't have to be
a member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, you don't have to fill out a form,
you don't have to give a DNA sample, you don't need to remember one
of those dreaded passwords. All you need to do is follow the rules
- clearly posted on the board - before you make a posting. Please

In other words, if you want to spread false rumors, vent your sour

CABARET NEWS ON THE WEBSITE
Information
about other shows around the country and around the world can be found
on the BREAKING NEWS page of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/).
New items are added almost daily. I have been very busy reorganizing
the website, but not too busy to add a bunch of new items. Here are
the titles of some of the stories posted in the last few days:
* PS CLASSICS

How do you get an
item posted in the BREAKING NEWS section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/)?
Just e-mail me a press release of at least four paragraphs, giving
the complete information on your show, CD release or other cabaret
related event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available. But
please send me complete information - and do not merely send a copy
of your flier. By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from
the press releases I receive before using the item on my website or
in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the four
or more paragraphs.
DON'T OVERLOOK THIS OPPORTUNITY
TO PROMOTE YOUR WEBSITE!
Cabaret performers
can also request a link to their website on the Performers Links pages
on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website - you don't need to be a member.
You should check this section just to make sure your name is listed
and properly linked. See http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/CabaretLinksIndex.shtml
While there, see
if there is another category on the page that you should be linked
through as well - Songwriter, Director, Videographer, etc. You do
not have to be a member to have a link on these pages. Please tell
your friends about this section of the website - eventually we hope
it will become sort of a "Cabaret Yellow Pages" section where you
can find hundreds of resources in putting together your show or recording
your CD.
Remember,
you need a website to be linked. An e-mail address is not sufficient.
BIRTHMONTH PROGRESS REPORT
The heat
wave sort of coincided with the start of my celebrations, so I had
to postpone a few items for the time being. But today a cool wave
has slipped into NYC and I am raring to get started. Monday night
I did make it into town to catch Rick Jensen's show at THE DUPLEX
CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/)
at 7:00 pm. Tuesday I stayed indoors all day - it was still 88 degrees
her (f) at 9:00 pm! Yesterday it cooled a bit, so I went back into
town to pick up my mail and then went back (for the third time!) to
Page Sampson's "Braving the Elements" show at 7:00 pm at DON'T TELL
MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/)
and then, after dinner, crossed the street to DANNY'S SKYLIGHT ROOM
(342 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-265-8133 - http://www.dannysgrandseapalace.com/)
to catch Mary Foster Conklin's tribute show to Matt Dennis at 9:15
pm. Two friends had joined me by this time, both of whom had missed
my Birthday and insisted on partying on. Stay tuned - tonight two
shows and a piano bar or two are on the schedule - more next issue.
IT'S TIME TO GO - MORE ON
MONDAY
Time to mail
this issue off - and one more plug. I hope a lot of you will sign
on as CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE members this year, The first year we
tried this we almost hit 300 members, and this past year we passed
the 350 member mark (nearly a 20% increase). A similar increase this
year would bring us over 400 members.
But most
of all, your membership donation is a way for you to encourage me
in my efforts to promote the art of cabaret, and support this newsletter
and the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/).
Your continued support is truly appreciated! You have no idea what
it feels like to open my mail - or check my e-mailbox - and find a
membership donation from folks around the country and around the world.
Each donation gives me tangible evidence that my efforts are appreciated.
Tonight I am off to see
Clark Warren's new show at DANNY'S SKYLIGHT ROOM (342 West 46th Street,
NYC - 1-212-265-8133 - http://www.dannysgrandseapalace.com/)
at 7:00 pm and then head across the street to catch Jenifer DelRio
at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/)
at 8:30 pm. Then I may get to The Piano Bar at DILLON'S (245 West
54th Street, NYC - 212-307-9797) for a bit of Ricky Ritzel mayhem.
It's nearly 4:00 pm, and I have been at this computer since 7:30 am!
Plus, as part of my on-going Birthmonth celebration, I didn't get
home until 1:30 am! No time for a nap today, so if you seem me around
looking very sleepy-eyed, please understand.
And that
is just about the way it was.
