CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE #030703 - MID-WEEK - Thursday, July 17, 2003
Since 1990 Your First, Best, and Only Complete Source of Cabaret News
If it's anything
to do with cabaret, you'll probably read it here first!
Please note - all back
issues are posted on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/HotlineOnlineArchives.shtml)
- even issues from 1999!
This is the
"MID-WEEK CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE," part two of the issue we sent out
on Monday. The MONDAY issue included the regular "Major Rooms" & "Cabaret
Stars in Other Rooms" listings for cabarets around the world, and
also has information on all the banner ads running on the CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE website. Soon, the Monday issue will also include listings
of shows offering discounts to CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE members. This
"MID-WEEK" issue will concentrate more on news, late breaking stories
and notes on shows seen.
This issue
will be a little shorter than usual - the incoming news has dropped
off considerably for the summer, and I want to send this issue off
just a little earlier than usual, since I have a very busy day today.
Just to let you in on how this all works, I usually start an issue
around 6:30 am - first with a rough outline including all the items
I want to include. Then I fill in the blanks, sometimes checking websites
for proper URL addresses, sometimes referring to my notebook, sometimes
leafing through all the fliers and post cards I have collected, and
sometimes even making a phone call or two to double check an item.
Hopefully, it is all put together by 3:00 pm, so that I can send it
off and still get a little nap in before heading into town.
By the way,
are you getting as disgusted with all the spam mail lately as I am?
This morning there were over 300 items of junk mail in my e-mailbox
- including a dozen of them offering a way to eliminate spam messages!
I must spend at least a half-hour everyday weeding through this garbage
to find an actual cabaret-related note. I have a filter on my e-mail
program that moves any mail that is from folks not in my e-mail address
book (currently over 4000 addresses) to a separate section - I actually
receive mail at 7 different addresses, such as Banners@, Subscribe@,
etc., so I receive more junk mail than most. Then, after reading the
regular items, I have to sort through the mess in the "new" folder.
And once in a while I delete an actual legitimate e-mail in error
because it comes from someone not on my list. If you are a subscriber
and/or a member, you have nothing to fear - your mail will go directly
into mu "priority" mailbox.
Now, I believe
in freedom of speech, and I don't believe there should be a charge
for e-mails (one suggested way to cut down on "spam") but there must
be a better system! Which brings me to another problem: There are
a few computer programs out there that automatically send out an e-mail
to the originator of the incoming letter requiring a confirmation
before the e-mail goes on to the intended recipient. This way, if
the originating address is bogus, the mail doesn't go through. Problem
is, I don't have time to confirm these e-mails when I send out nearly
2,500 newsletters, twice a week - and under this setup actually end
up getting hundreds more incoming e-mails to my mailbox! If you are
considering such a system, please remember the inconvenience that
you are creating for the person trying to write to you.
Once again,
I send a great big thank you to all the many folks who have joined
or rejoined as members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE in just a few short
weeks of our 2003-2004 membership drive! It is really thrilling to
see several brand new members join, and so many folks rejoining. Rest
assured that I have read every letter, card and email sent with your
membership donation, but its just about impossible to answer every
one personally. If you have sent a special request or question with
your gift over a week ago but have not received a personal response,
please let me know right away - I may have set it aside and then misplaced
it. Note that every membership donation I receive is acknowledged
in about 48 hours with a form e-mail letter. Please check that the
amount on the acknowledgement agrees with the donation sent (I have
sent out over nearly 200 so far, and I am not infallible).
Note: About
a dozen folks have sent in checks made out to CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
rather than simply Stu Hamstra, and I have been returning them with
an explanation. Please note.
2003-2004 MEMBERSHIP DRIVE

the full membership year - another reason to join as soon as possible.
CDs for sale by 2002-2003 members will be deleted from the website
at the end of July, so if you currently have a CD on display, but
have not yet rejoined, don't delay.

ANOTHER NEW SECTION IN THE
MONDAY NEWSLETTER
I am still
awaiting delivery from the printer, but soon we will mail out CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE MEMBERSHIP CARDS to all 2003-2004 Members, which can
be used for show discounts where offered. Any show that offers at
least a $5 discount (can be 2 for 1, or 1/2 price) to CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE members will now be included in a special new section the MONDAY
issue of the newsletter and are also listed on the special MEMBER
DEALS page in the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/MembersOnly.shtml).
You do not need to be a member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE to offer
the discount, but you will have to be a member to take advantage of
these deals.
To be eligible
for a listing in this section and on the website, you must send me
your flier and/or other promotional material showing the discount
offer. I will use that information for the website and newsletter
listing. Please confirm that you have sent me the material with an
e-mail reminder so I can watch for it.
Another special
deal: If you place a banner ad on the website, and also offer a show
discount to CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE members, you can take a 10% PayPal
payment discount instead of the current 5% on your banner ad payment,
if the total cost of your ad is over $100. This is in addition to
any rebate or discount you might be entitled to.
Be sure you
check with the venue where your show is being performed, to make sure
that these discounts are permitted.

Friends of

birthday, Sunday, July 20th at 4:30 pm, at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West
46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/).
It's called, "Celebrating Arthur Kirson: A Performance -- songs he
wrote, songs he sang, and songs he loved." Scheduled to appear, in
alphabetical order, are: Bobbi Baird, Russell Eiffert, Adam Kerr,
Jay Kerr, Lynne Kerr, Francesca Maese, Bonnie Sher, KT Sullivan, Stan
Turetsky, Franklin Underwood, Ken Urmston, and Ronny Whyte. The even
will be light on the mourning and heavy on the fun. Included in the
performance will be a few of the songs of the Jay Kerr/Arthur Kirson
collaboration that will receive their first public performance. The
songs were a part of a show Jay and Arthur were in the process of
writing when he died. Reservations are highly recommended.
MISSED IN THE MONDAY ISSUE
I mentioned
that Eileen Fulton is at THE CABARET at Odette's (South River Road,
New Hope, PA - 215-862-3000 - http://www.odettes.com/)
on Friday & Saturday, July 18th & 19th, but I forgot to add that Brent
Winborn will perform his new show "WELCOME TO THE 60'S," a celebration
of the music from the era of flower power, peace and love at the same
club this Sunday, July 20th at 7:30 pm. Brent and musical director
Rick Jensen sing their favorite 60s tunes from Burt Bacharach and
Henry Mancini to Herman's Hermits, The Beatles and Petula Clark. I
saw this show a few weeks ago, and loved it! Try to catch it if you
can! There is a $15 music charge and $8 food/drink minimum.
NEED TO PROMOTE YOUR SHOW
THIS SUMMER?
Plenty of
BANNER AD spaces on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website are currently
available for the balance of July and the month August. Then things
begin to heat up for September & October. With Cabaret Scenes Magazine
doing another "double issue" for August & September, a lot of folks
have contacted us looking for a place to advertise their September
shows. Keep in mind, I limit the ads to 20 banners per week, so if
you plan to order a banner, reserve your banner space as soon as possible.
If you are
looking for the ideal place to promote your show, you too should consider
the premier cabaret-only publication in the world: CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE! Over 6,000 quality, cabaret-loving folks visit our website
each day - and they look at on average of 6 or 7 pages each. Banner
ads are displayed at random in two places on nearly all 2,500+ pages.
This means your ad could be seen as many as 3,000 times each day,
21,000 times each week!
In addition,
those running banners get mentioned every week in the Monday issue
of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE e-mail newsletter (current circulation nearly
2,500) as long as the banner is running. Even more important, you
can run a banner for 2 weeks on CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE for just $80
- in full color - with a "live link" to your website, if applicable.
That's before any member rebates or discounts.
For information
on banner ads, check out the banner information page on the CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/BannerHere.shtml),
or simply send me a note at banners@svhamstra.com
with the single word "Banner" in the subject line and I'll send all
the details.
SHOWS SEEN
One of the
reasons why I went to two issues of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE per week
(at least on a test basis) is that the single issues were getting
so filled with listings stuff, I had no room to mention shows seen
and other items of interest. I saw a few shows over the past week
or so that bear special mention.
John Bucchino
is a laid-back, easy-going guy that writes incredible songs that so
often touch my heart. Last night, Wednesday, July 16th, I saw his
current show at THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street,
NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/)
and came away impressed by two things: the breadth of his talent,
and a sense of disappointment that so few performers were in the house
to hear first-hand how some of his songs came to be written, and catch
a glimpse of songs to come. John admits, virtually from the start
of the show, that he is just now breaking out of one of those "dry"
periods, when new songs just don't come into his head. Throughout
the show he goes back to this theme, as he tells of former "dry spells"
and how they led to some exciting and wonderful periods of creative
activity, and how this DUPLEX show is a first step in that direction.
John has dug deep into his trunk of unsung/unsold songs for this show,
but he wisely also includes some songs that have become cabaret favorites.
A medley of six of his songs is a centerpiece of the show - songs
written from a feminine perspective. He also included a sample of
an upcoming CD - instrumental performances of some of the songs of
Richard Rodgers, as performed on the piano that Rodgers used in their
composition.
John Bucchino
has two more shows in his Wednesday night series at THE DUPLEX CABARET
THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/),
both at 9:00 pm. I would especially urge performers and songwriters
alike to see this show - and see how and why the songs are written,
and her some real Bucchino classics performed by the composer.
I don't know
how he does it, but somehow Clark Warren gets more handsome, sounds
more romantic, and continues to totally entertain with each show he
does, with each year that passes. Elegantly and very appropriately
attired in a glowing white dinner jacket, with festive bow tie and
cumberbund, Mr. Warren claimed at the start of his show at DANNY'S
SKYLIGHT ROOM (342 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-265-8133 - http://www.dannysgrandseapalace.com/)
that this was not really a theme show ("To Theme or Not to Theme")
yet presented a selection of songs that provided one of the greatest
themes of all - love of friends and family. In fact, in the opening
night show I saw on Thursday, July 10th, Clark's daughter, visiting
from Hawaii, joined him in one of the songs, "Inch Worm" - a song
he would sing to her when she was just a small child. Mr. Warren cleverly
walked the fine line that separates cabaret from lounge, only occasionally
slipping astray, but always returning quickly. And he managed to keep
the show from being too "cute" while maintaining his elegant charm
and stately, distinguished manner. By the way, you don't have to go
to Chicago to see a man dance with his wife - halfway through the
show Clark does exactly that! One clever arrangement, by the rarely
seen but very talented musical director Frank Underwood, was the pairing
of two songs that actually told the same story: "Good Thing Going"
(Sondheim) and "First" (Hamilton/Mandel). And there was even another
touch of nostalgia when Clark took out a vibraharp (remember them?)
to sing "When the Wind Was Green."
Clark Warren
has just one more show in this run at DANNY'S SKYLIGHT ROOM (342 West
46th Street, NYC - 1-212-265-8133 - http://www.dannysgrandseapalace.com/),
on Thursday, July 24th at 7:00 pm. If you like your cabaret both light
and heartfelt, this is for you!
Jennifer
DelRio is currently appearing at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street,
NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/)
with her show "The Human Heart" and I was there on July 10th to catch
her show and also see how things would go in the new "Lounge Room"
at the club. In a new policy, MAMA'S has discontinued happy hour in
the piano bar area, installing new lights and sound equipment and
presenting cabaret in this space before the regular piano bar starts
at around 10:00 pm. Ms. DelRio formerly performed at many of the top
clubs in the city using the name Emma Lampert - one of those union-rule
things that kept her from being Jennifer Lampert since there was already
a performer by that name. But since her marriage to Mr. Oscar DelRio,
she goes by this name. Mr. DelRio is Cuban, and Ms. DelRio's show
had a definite Latin flavor. Her musical director, Fran Minarik, has
arranged some delightful numbers that showcase her amazing voice.
Ms. DelRio has sunshiny vocals that hint of glorious possibility,
but her often confusing stage movements (perhaps caused by the room
layout) and her vocalizations (the word "day" does not have 5 syllables!)
detracted from what could have been an incredibly exciting show. Hopefully
she will settle down before the end of this run. By the way, Ms. DelRio
was Miss USO in 2001 and spent three weeks entertaining the soldiers,
police and fire personnel working at "Ground Zero" in the cleanup
of the World Trade Center atrocity. Brava!
Jennifer
DelRio continues at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788
- http://www.donttellmama.com/)
with remaining shows on Friday (8:30 pm), Saturday (7:30 pm) and Sunday
(7:15 pm), July 18th, 19th & 20th. She is well worth seeing, in spite
of my own personal quibbles.
Barbara Ann
Davidson recently did a 2-show run at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th
Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/)
called "Getting Some Fun Out of Life," and indeed this was a show
filled with fun - and a lot of funny business mostly having to do
with the fact that she is only about five feet tall. With an unusually
funny Gregory Toroian at the piano, Ms. Davidson mostly mugged her
way from song to song. The vocals were not brilliant and fluid, but
they certainly matched the theme and material in the show. There is
even a cute duet with Mr. Toroian in the show, "Doodlin' Song." A
brilliantly performed "There's No Business Like Show Business," near
the end of the show, with a startling arrangement by Mr. Toroian,
nearly brought tears to my eyes. The song list was wide ranging, opening
with Randy Newman's "Short People" and closing with Dave Frishberg's
"I Want To Be a Sideman," with songs by the Gershwins, Burton Lane
& Jay Lerner, James Taylor, Christine Lavin, Irving Berlin and others
scattered between. But the star of the show is Ms. Davidson and her
way with a song - at times reminiscent of the old British Music Hall
tradition, and at all times delightful fun. After all, it is a show
about fun.
The diminutive
Ms. Davison promised to be back with more fun soon - and I shall be
there, pen in hand. She may be short in the height department, but
she is certainly a giant of a performer.
There will
be more cabaret mini-reviews in the next Mid-Week issue of the CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE newsletter. I have also been collecting them for a
special section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/)
where I can expand on my comments and include a photo when possible.
I will also be adding several that will not appear in the e-mail CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE issues. I'll let you know when they are posted.
JOHN MALINO BIG BAND IN NYACK
Folks who
enjoyed The John Malino Big Band that used to be at SARDI'S (234 West
44th Street, NYC - 212-221-8440), can find John and the gang at THE
HUDSON HOUSE (134 Main Street, Nyack, NY - 845-353-1355) every third
Monday of the month starting Monday, July 21st. This is an 11-piece
band with a velvet-voiced bandleader. There is just a $10 cover and
no minimum. Sets start at 8:00 pm and run through 11:00 pm.
ELAINE STRITCH JOINS "HELP
IS ON THE WAY IX" CAST
Elaine Stritch,
the Tony Award-winning Broadway Legend, has now joined the cast of
celebrities that will perform at "HELP IS ON THE WAY IX - Red Hot
Broadway" on Monday, July 28th. Ms. Stritch is in San Francisco with
the one-woman tour-de-force production of "Elaine Stritch at Liberty,"
which plays at THE CURRAN THEATRE through July 27th as part of the
"Best Of Broadway series." Visit the web site for additional information
at http://www.helpisontheway.org/.
There is a more complete story, details on all the performers and
ticket costs, in the "Breaking News" section of the CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/).

miss out on another feature of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website
(http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/)
- the MESSAGE BOARD - where anyone, from anywhere, can post information
about their shows, CDs or other cabaret-related event. You can also
post requests and questions about cabaret performances, finding material,
and share your thoughts and ideas of cabaret. You don't have to be
a member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, you don't have to fill out a form,
you don't have to give a DNA sample, you don't need to remember one
of those dreaded passwords. All you need to do is follow the rules
- clearly posted on the board - before you make a posting. Please
use your real name. I will remove your message if I deem it inappropriate.
In other words, if you want to spread false rumors, vent your sour

GENTRY IN CHICAGO LOOKING
FOR RAFFLE ITEMS
GENTRY ON
STATE (440 North State Street, Chicago, IL - 312-836-0933 - http://www.gentryofchicago.com/)
will celebrate with their 3rd Annual Christmas in July to raise funds
for one of the most amazing theater organizations in Chicago as well
as the world. HealthWorks Theatre's executive director, Stephen Rader
has made a public plea for monetary support in light of the recent
budget cuts issued to Chicago-area schools as well as the general
economic situation. Christmas in July will last the entire night of
Friday, July 25th but the main event drive will occur from 5:00 to
9:00 pm. Mr. Rader and volunteers plan to get into the spirit of things
with Christmas/beachwear costumes and fun in addition to selling raffle
tickets for a bevy of great prizes.
The folks
at GENTRY ON STATE are requesting ANY & ALL giveaway items for customer
consumption as well as any "big ticket" items you may have available
to use as raffle prizes that evening.æ Golf bags, coolers, umbrellas,
glassware sets, gift certificates, tickets to upcoming events/shows/concerts,
etc. will all be appreciated GREATLY by the staff and management of
both Gentry and HealthWorks Theatre. Items may be dropped off or mailed
to us c/o Christmas in July, Gentry of Chicago, 440 North State Street,
Chicago, IL 60610.
Those that
wish to help but will be unable to attend, may send tax-deductible
contributions to HealthWorks Theatre at 3171 N. Halsted, 2nd Floor,
Chicago, IL 60657.
CABARET NEWS ON THE WEBSITE
Information
about other shows around the country and around the world can be found
on the BREAKING NEWS page of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/).
New items are added almost daily. I have been very busy reorganizing
the website, but not too busy to add a bunch of new items.
How do you
get an item posted in the BREAKING NEWS section of the CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/)?
Just e-mail me a press release of at least four paragraphs, giving
the complete information on your show, CD release or other cabaret
related event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available. But
please send me complete information - and do not merely send a copy
of your flier. By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from
the press releases I receive before using the item on my website or
in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the four
or more paragraphs.
DON'T OVERLOOK THIS OPPORTUNITY
TO PROMOTE YOUR WEBSITE!
Cabaret performers
can also request a link to their website on the Performers Links pages
on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website - you don't need to be a member.
You should check this section just to make sure your name is listed
and properly linked. See http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/CabaretLinksIndex.shtml
While there,
see if there is another category on the page that you should be linked
through as well - Songwriter, Director, Videographer, etc. You do
not have to be a member to have a link on these pages. Please tell
your friends about this section of the website - eventually we hope
it will become sort of a "Cabaret Yellow Pages" section where you
can find hundreds of resources in putting together your show or recording
your CD.
Remember,
you need a website to be linked. An e-mail address is not sufficient.
BIRTHMONTH
PROGRESS REPORT
Actually,
my Birthmonth Celebration has gotten off to a slow start and the proposed
"Piano Bar" tour has been postponed again. Problem is that the membership
drive has taken up a lot of my time and energy - each time a member
joins I have several tasks to do - responding to the gift (and printing
out my response for my record keeping), updating the member list,
updating the appropriate page on the website, updating my card file,
etc. Also, each member is sent a second e-mail outlining all the benefits
of membership.
At the same
time, I am upgrading some of the software on my computer and converting
all my data to the new programs - including all of the nearly 2,500
pages on my website (plus nearly 1000 photos that go in those pages!).
I spend between one and two hours a day on this task alone. Fortunately,
the new web design program will make further changes automatically
- up to now all connecting links needed to be checked by hand.
You will
probably not notice many changes to start, but watch in the months
to come for new ways of presenting you information, new design possibilities,
etc. And I promise that you will not be required to wait for one of
those 2-minute animated pages when you sign on to the CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/) - they are cute
and entertaining the first time around, but soon become a nuisance.
My own personal feeling is that they really show off a web designers
abilities rather than give you the information that you came to the
website to find.
All this
makes for one rather sleepy CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE editor around 10:00
pm - just about the time when the piano bars really begin to heat
up. But stay tuned - I still have 19 days or so left before the "Birthmonth"
ends. In fact, I have scheduled no cabaret events for tomorrow night,
the plan being to get a good long nap in before heading into town
around 9:00 pm. Stay tuned.
IT'S TIME TO GO - MORE ON
MONDAY
Time to mail
this issue off - and one more plug. I hope a lot of you will sign
on as CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE members this year, The first year we
tried this we almost hit 300 members, and this past year we passed
the 350 member mark (nearly a 20% increase). A similar increase this
year would bring us over 400 members.
But most
of all, your membership donation is a way for you to encourage me
in my efforts to promote the art of cabaret, and support this newsletter
and the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/).
Your continued support is truly appreciated! You have no idea what
it feels like to open my mail - or check my e-mailbox - and find a
membership donation from folks around the country and around the world.
Each donation gives me tangible evidence that my efforts are appreciated.
Now I am
headed back into town to the MAC WORLD exhibition at the JAVITS CENTER
to get a glimpse at the new G5 computers, and pick up a book or two,
some extra memory for my aging but faithful G3 MAC and hopefully an
external hard drive, since my G3 hard drive is nearly full - mostly
with photos for the website. The show is open until 6:00 pm, so I'll
stay in town and catch some cabaret.
Tonight I
am off to see Audrey Lavine & Scott Coulter sing about their Southern
roots in "Goin' Home - Songs of the South" at THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE
(61 Christopher Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/)
at 7:00 pm, and then, if I can catch a cab right away, try to get
to DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/)
to catch Joe Souza's "Souzacle" show at 8:30 pm.
And that
is just about the way it was.
