CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE #030704 - MID-WEEK - Thursday, July 24, 2003
Since 1990 Your First, Best, and Only Complete Source of Cabaret News
If it's anything
to do with cabaret, you'll probably read it here first!
This is the
"MID-WEEK CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE," part two of the issue we sent out
on Monday. The MONDAY issue included the regular "Major Rooms" & "Cabaret
Stars in Other Rooms" listings for cabarets around the world, and
also has information on all the banner ads running on the CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE website. Soon, the Monday issue will also include listings
of shows offering discounts to CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE members. This
"MID-WEEK" issue will concentrate more on news, late breaking stories
and notes on shows seen.
Once again,
I send a great big thank you to all the many folks who have joined
or rejoined as members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE in just a bit more
than six weeks into our 2003-2004 membership drive! It is really thrilling
to see several brand new members join, and so many folks rejoining.
Note that every membership donation I receive is acknowledged within
about 48 hours with a form e-mail letter. Please check that the amount
on the acknowledgement agrees with the donation sent (I have sent
out over nearly 200 so far, and I am not infallible).
Note: About
a dozen folks have sent in checks made out to CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
rather than simply Stu Hamstra, and I have been returning them with
an explanation.
Yesterday
I finally setup and connected the new 80G hard drive and over the
weekend will move all my website files and photos to the new drive
- thus freeing a lot of space on my original 6G hard drive. I also
expanded the random memory on my MAC from 256K to 512K, which should
enable all my programs to work faster. In addition, I have upgraded
my text editing, page design and photo programs to the new MAC Jaguar
System X operating software, and next I will be updating the database
program. In fact, by the end of the month I expect to be running only
by e-mail program on the old System 9 operating software. That will
be the most difficult to upgrade, since it includes over 5,000 e-mail
addresses, including the nearly 2,500 subscribers to CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE.
All of these
upgrades and improvements have been made possible by the generous
gifts and membership donations received in the past 45 days. If we
achieve our membership goals, I should be able to also purchase a
video camera to provide both still and video information and coverage
on the website. My mother always said that the trick to remain young
was to learn something new every day - well, by the time I learn all
the new programs, the new hardware and the new operating system, I
will probably be 14 years old (sort of a reverse of the movie BIG).
Meantime,
I am making every effort to answer the many e-mails arriving here,
adding BREAKING NEWS stories to the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website
(http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/),
and writing the bi-weekly newsletter. It is a very busy time for me,
but actually, I am really enjoying it!
On Monday
morning I fly off to New Orleans, where "The Black & White Blues"
will celebrate its First Anniversary of performances on July 28th
at LE CHAT NOIR (715 St. Charles Avenue, New Orleans, LA - 504-581-5812
- http://www.cabaretlechatnoir.com/).
Written and produced by Harry Mayronne & Ricky Graham, its a musical
revue that makes New Orleans food, restaurants and celebrity chefs
SING! Mr. Mayronne and company have made all the arrangements, including
an overnight at a historic New Orleans B&B - with a trolly line passing
by! I'll be there one night only - and return on Tuesday afternoon.
My plan is to create the Monday edition of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
newsletter on Sunday, and e-mail it early Monday morning before heading
to the airport for my 11:00 am flight. I'll be accompanied by my trusty
iBook - which is getting a little jealous because its older brother,
by G3 computer, seems to be getting all the attention lately. The
B&B room has a "data port" so I'll be able to send and receive e-mail
while there.
2003-2004 MEMBERSHIP DRIVE
CONTINUES THROUGH JULY!
If you appreciate
receiving these newsletters, and find the website useful, helpful
and entertaining, I hope you will consider becoming a member of CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE this year. Nearly 200 folks have already signed up
for 2003-2004. You can join for just $20 (SILVER LEVEL), or get special
discounts and additional benefits with a $75 (GOLD) donation (20%
discount on banners, etc.). You might even consider becoming a sponsoring
member at a higher level. If you enjoy the MESSAGE BOARD, all the
BREAKING NEWS stories, the FAQs & TIPs about cabaret, the CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE e-mail newsletters, and all the other information and
support we provide here, now is your chance to show your appreciation
and become a supporting member - none of this would be possible without
your membership donations.
For information
on becoming a contributing member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, check
at http://svhamstra.com/Membership.shtml
or else just send me a note at membership@svhamstra.com
with the single word "membership" in the subject line, and I'll send
all the details. You can even send your donation by credit card via
PayPal - http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/PayPalPayment.shtml!
If you make your donation by check, please make the check payable
simply to Stu Hamstra and send to 676A Ninth Avenue #120, New York,
NY 10036.
Remember,
every member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE has the opportunity to display
one or more CDs for sale on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website for
the full membership year - another reason to join as soon as possible.
CDs for sale by 2002-2003 members will be deleted from the website
at the end of July, so if you currently have a CD on display, but
have not yet rejoined, don't delay.
THANKS TO OUR RENEWING CHARTER

LOU'S PLACE TO CLOSE ON JULY
28th
LOU'S PLACE
AT SHORAH'S (27 Foster Street, Worcester, MA - 508-797-0007 - http://www.lousplacecabaret.com/)
will be closing its doors on Monday, July 28th. After only 5 weeks,
the owner of Shorah's, Keivon Mizarhi has decided that, due to lower
than expected ticket sales up to this date, that he will not honor
his commitment to support the cabaret through December 31st, as originally
contracted. After nine months of very hard work working with the media,
sending out press releases, creating the facilities, and developing
a communications and entertainment infrastructure to provide a quality
room for both patrons and performers, Ida Zecco was informed of the
news by phone on Tuesday night. Any business venture requires much
more than five weeks to get on its feet, and it is most unfortunate
for the community of Worcester, the cabaret community, and Ida and
her co-workers were not given time to make a real go of it. Ms. Zecco
is not a person easily discouraged, and I expect we will be hearing
more from her soon.
SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH BABY
JANE!
Now into
her 5th month of a smashing run on Saturdays at THE DUPLEX CABARET
THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/),
powerhouse singer Baby Jane Dexter will put a spell on everyone at
a spectacular concert at the Central Park SummerStage this Sunday,
July 27th. The event is a jubilant 60th year celebration of the birth
of Janis Joplin (critics have frequently compared Dexter to Joplin
in the past). A huge crowd is expected to attend the Hot Summer Cool
Fun with Big Brother and the Holding Company, Kozmic Blues Band, and
special quests Bonnie Bramlett, Baby Jane Dexter, Nina Hagen, Genya
Raven, Phoebe Snow and more to be added.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MR. BOND
Phil Geoffrey
Bond, Founding Artistic Director of THE STOREFRONT THEATRE (http://www.storefronttheatre.com)
and booking manager at THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher
Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/)
has a case of serial deja vu when he celebrates his 18th Birthday
on Tuesday, July 29th at GASLIGHT (400 West 14th Street, NYC) from
7:30 pm until they carry him out.

NEED TO PROMOTE YOUR SHOW?
Plenty of
BANNER AD spaces on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website are currently
available for the month August. Then things begin to heat up for September
& October. Keep in mind, I limit the ads to 20 banners per week, so
if you plan to order a banner, reserve your banner space as soon as
possible. If you are looking for the ideal place to promote your show,
you too should consider the premier cabaret-only publication in the
world: CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE! Over 6,000 quality, cabaret-loving
folks visit our website each day - and they look at on average of
6 or 7 pages each. Banner ads are displayed at random in two places
on nearly all 2,500+ pages. This means your ad could be seen as many
as 3,000 times each day, 21,000 times each week!
In addition,
those running banners get mentioned every week in the Monday issue
of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE e-mail newsletter (current circulation nearly
2,500) as long as the banner is running. Even more important, you
can run a banner for 2 weeks on CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE for just $80
- in full color - with a "live link" to your website, if applicable.
That's before any member rebates or discounts.
For information
on banner ads, check out the banner information page on the CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/BannerHere.shtml),
or simply send me a note at banners@svhamstra.com
with the single word "Banner" in the subject line and I'll send all
the details.
POLICE RAID JAZZ/CABARET SHOW
At Mabel
Dawn Davis' "Fresh Fruit Festival" opening show at LULU'S CAFE (106
Norfolk Street, NYC) on Wednesday night, all the pieces for a grade-B
gangster flick were in place: a hip speakeasy in the East Village,
free liquor to mix with gourmet iced tea, a hot band and a beautiful
girl singer doing swanky jazz ... the only thing missing was a police
raid. Well, about 32 bars before the end of the show, they got even
that! On a "tip" from a neighbor, the boys in blue from the NYPD moved
in just as Miss Davis was finishing up the closing number (a rather
divine rendition of "Natural Woman.") The NY police were more than
prepared to deal with such hardened jazz criminals (of the heart!)
for violations such as "not posting a warning of a show in the neighborhood"
and a "missing EXIT sign," violations for which they sent not one,
but FOUR uniformed officers as well as a police van ready to shut
us down and cart poor Mabel Dawn and the Pretty Girl Orchestra away
to jail. Naturally, facing a crisis, the cast did what any rational
band would do in their place; they coolly finished the tune anyway
(including the extra chorus!), said good night and then leisurely
signed autographs and sold CDs. The cafe got a summons and everyone
went home.
The group
has two more shows at LuLu's on Thursday & Friday, July 24th & 25th
at 9:00 pm before moving to the MILAGRO THEATER at the CSV Center
on Saturday & Sunday, July 26th & 27th at 8:00 pm. Cover is $20 -
no minimum. Police escort may be provided at no extra charge - who
knows?
SHOWS SEEN
One of the
reasons why I went to two issues of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE per week
(at least on a test basis) is that the single issues were getting
so filled with listings stuff, I had no room to mention shows seen
and other items of interest. I saw a few shows over the past week
or so that bear special mention.
I saw David
Colbert when he appeared as a guest of Liz DuFour when she made her
cabaret debut at ROSE'S TURN a few weeks ago. Apparently he caught
the "cabaret bug" at that performance and booked himself into DON'T
TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/)
for his own cabaret debut. I caught his opening show last night at
6:00 pm in the Cabaret Lounge, and once again was impressed by his
vocals, poise and talents. David was ably accompanied at the piano
by Ryan Hunt, serving as a last minute substitute for Ms. DuFour,
who was sidelined by a finger injury. Liz did take the piano to accompany
David for one song, "Those Eyes," which she wrote and David sang partly
in Italian - his own personal translation. The show was called "Keeping
My Composer," a clever title for a show with a clever theme. Each
of the songs chosen was accompanied by a brief story of a point of
connection between David and the composer, or the song itself. The
stories were as delightful as the vocals, and Mr. Colbert's NYC cabaret
debut was impressive. With little experience in cabaret, and a lot
of experience on the musical theater stage, there were times that
we hoped David would tone back a little on the acting. That aside,
I was particularly impressed by his approach to several of the songs
on his list, especially the "Sleepy Man" lullaby, which was accompanied
by a particularly humorous anecdote. He closed the show with Glen
Mehrbach's "In the End," a song which deserves more exposure in cabaret.
David Colbert
has three more appearances scheduled at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West
46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/)
- Saturday, July 26th at 3:00 pm, Monday, July 28th at 6:00 pm and
Friday, August 1st at 6:00 pm.
I have not
seen Val Ryder in performance in many years, and when we chatted briefly
before the show, he explained why. Shortly after his last cabaret
show in 1996, he was diagnosed with cancer of the neck, an area very
close to his vocal chords. With the wonderful Barry Levitt Trio providing
excellent accompaniment, Mr. Ryder made a triumphant return to the
cabaret stage last night at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street,
NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/),
and showed that he was back in top form, both as vocalist and entertainer.
Val is a vocal coach, and presented one of his students, Scott Parrish,
as special guest, allowing this very talented and personable vocalist
ample stage time. The result was an elegant and well balanced hour
of cabaret. A clever medley duet, which opened with Mr. Ryder slightly
revising the opening lines of a popular song, "You Make Me Feel So
'Old'" to which the much younger Mr. Parrish responded with "You're
Nobody Till Somebody Loves You" was charming and showed the marvelous
chemistry these two singer share. There were several more delightful
moments in the show - but with no song list provided, it is difficult
to list them all here. My own personal highlight came with Mr. Ryder
singing "Don't Get Around Much Any More," a song that he performed
many a night at the old 5 OAKS in the Village with the remarkable
Marie Blake at the piano. That was more than a dozen years ago, yet
the memory resurrected brought tears to my eyes.
Val Ryder,
along with his guest Scott Parrish and the Barry Levitt Trio have
just one more show at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC -
1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/),
on Wednesday, July 23rd at 7:00 pm. You would be wise to make a reservation.
Audrey Lavine
& Scott Coulter are two of the top vocalists appearing in cabaret
here in NYC. To hear both of them in one show was a very special summertime
treat - and to have Ross Patterson at the piano was frosting on the
cake. Audrey & Scott's show at THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher
Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/)
was titled "Goin' Home: Songs of the South." Amazingly, as pointed
out at the top of the show, many of these Southern-themed songs were
actually written by composers from the North, and the song list wisely
included the birthplace of most of the songwriters. Brooklyn, Chicago,
Bronx, NYC were represented, but Texas, Tennessee, and other more
typically Southern locales were also included on the list. The songs
ranged from Gospel to Country to R&B, with a lot of other styles along
the way. With Don Falzone on bass, and Ross occasionally joining in
on vocals, there were times when it seemed like an entire choir was
on stage, especially on the very beautiful presentation of Carol Hall's
"Harmony." Several delightful song-pairings were dotted throughout
the show, including Julie Gold's "Southbound Train" and the Van Heusen/Mercer
standard "I Thought About You," as well as "Tennessee Waltz" (Stewart/King)
and Dolly Parton's "Waltz Me To Heaven." Ms. Lavine always amazes
me with her ability to act and look and sound so young when paired
with a much younger performer, and Mr. Coulter's vocals always amaze
me as he seems to put his very own mark on every song he sings.
"Goin' Home:
Songs of the South" with Audrey Lavine & Scott Coulter, has two more
performances at THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street,
NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/),
tonight, Thursday, July 24th and next week Thursday, July 31st, both
shows at 7:00 pm. With four highly talented performers on stage, and
a collection of down-home songs on the menu, you are assured of an
evening of real Southern comfort. Enjoy!
Only time
for three reviews this issue. There will be more cabaret mini-reviews
in the next Mid-Week issue of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE newsletter.
I have also been collecting them for a special section of the CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/)
where I can expand on my comments and include a photo when possible.
I will also be adding several that will not appear in the e-mail CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE issues. I'll let you know when they are posted.

CABARET NEWS ON THE WEBSITE
Information
about other shows around the country and around the world can be found
on the BREAKING NEWS page of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/).
How do you get an item posted in the BREAKING NEWS section of the
CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website? Just e-mail me a press release of
at least four paragraphs, giving the complete information on your
show, CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in
jpg or gif format if available. But please send me complete information
- and do not merely send a copy of your flier. By the way, I usually
trim quotes from reviews from the press releases I receive before
using the item on my website or in the newsletter, so don't count
them when putting together the four or more paragraphs.
IT'S TIME TO GO - MORE ON
MONDAY
I have to
quit "work" early tomorrow, since I am meeting a friend in the city
to go shopping for a new jacket and a few other clothing items to
prepare for my trip to New Orleans on Monday. After seeing all those
"makeover" shows on TV, I decided I needed a "third eye" to assist
me in my attempts at sartorial splendor - after all, this will be
New Orleans! I couldn't line up five guys to help me, so I had to
settle for one. My own personal taste in clothing tends towards dark
colored shirts and khaki slacks. My favorite blue blazer, which served
me faithfully for about six years, has reached the end of its life-span.
It was a birthday gift from my sister in Florida, and actually has
already had its lining replaced once. I will promise the jacket a
decent burial.
Time to mail
this issue off - and one more plug. I hope a lot of you will sign
on as CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE members this year, The first year we
tried this we almost hit 300 members, and this past year we passed
the 350 member mark (nearly a 20% increase). A similar increase this
year would bring us over 400 members.
But most
of all, your membership donation is a way for you to encourage me
in my efforts to promote the art of cabaret, and support this newsletter
and the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/).
Your continued support is truly appreciated! You have no idea what
it feels like to open my mail - or check my e-mailbox - and find a
membership donation from folks around the country and around the world.
Each donation gives me tangible evidence that my efforts are appreciated.
And that
is just about the way it was.
