CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE #030801 - MID-WEEK - Thursday, August 7, 2003
Since 1990 Your First, Best, and Only Complete Source of Cabaret News

If it's anything to do with cabaret, you'll probably read it here first!

This is the "MID-WEEK CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE," part two of the issue we sent out on Monday. The MONDAY issue includes the regular listings for cabarets around the world, and also has information on all the banner ads running on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website. Soon, the Monday issue will also include listings of shows offering discounts to CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE members. This "MID-WEEK" issue will concentrate more on news, late breaking stories and notes on shows seen.

Once again, I send a great big thank you to all the many folks who have joined or rejoined as members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE in just a bit more than six weeks into our 2003-2004 membership drive! It is really thrilling to see several brand new members join, and so many folks rejoining. Note that every membership donation I receive is acknowledged within about 48 hours with a form e-mail letter. Please check that the amount on the acknowledgement agrees with the donation sent (I have sent out over nearly 200 so far, and I am not infallible).

Note: Several folks have sent in checks made out to CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE rather than simply Stu Hamstra, and I have been returning them with an explanation.

BANNER SALES HEATING UP - DON'T MISS OUT!

BANNER AD spaces on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website are suddenly selling fast for the month of August - I received three banner orders just yesterday alone. And the orders are coming in for September & October as well. Keep in mind, I limit the ads to 20 banners per week, so if you plan to order a banner, reserve your banner space as soon as possible. If you are looking for the ideal place to promote your show, you too should consider the premier cabaret-only publication in the world: CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE! Over 6,000 quality, cabaret-loving folks visit our website each day - and they look at on average of 6 or 7 pages each. Banner ads are displayed at random in two places on nearly all 2,500+ pages. This means your ad could be seen as many as 3,000 times each day, 21,000 times each week!

In addition, those running banners get mentioned every week in the Monday issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE e-mail newsletter (current circulation nearly 2,500) as long as the banner is running. Even more important, you can run a banner for 2 weeks on CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE for just $80 - in full color - with a "live link" to your website, if applicable. That's before any member rebates or discounts.

For information on banner ads, check out the banner information page on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/BannerHere.shtml), or simply send me a note at banners@svhamstra.com with the single word "Banner" in the subject line and I'll send all the details.

CABARET CD SALE PAGES ADDED FOR 2003-2004 TO WEBSITE

Here's another reason to be a member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE: All members have the opportunity to have their CDs available for sale via the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website. SILVER MEMBERS can display one CD on their page, GOLD MEMBERS and above can display up to four CDs (additional CDs - GOLD or above members only - can be added, if requested, at $15 each). The CD FOR SALE listing includes a special page under your name, displaying your CD cover(s) and a link to a website of your choice where the CD may be purchased. You can link to your own website, or to LML Music, CD Baby, Amazon, or some other site.

I spent all day yesterday adding the pages for members who requested this service along with their 2003-2004 Membership donation. Please check the CD SALE section if you made a request to make sure it was received here - and if your page isn't there, let me know right away! If you CD FOR SALE page is already posted, please check to see if the link is correct and if it is working properly. I added about 2 dozen pages, and haven't had time to check them all.

This membership benefit is by request, so if you already are a new member, please let me know if you wish to be linked in this section of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE - see http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/MemberCDSales2002.shtml. I need a copy of your CD or a jpg scan of the CD cover in order to build the page.

SHOWS SEEN

One of the reasons why I went to two issues of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE per week (at least on a test basis) is that the single issues were getting so filled with listings stuff, I had no room to mention shows seen and other items of interest. I saw a few shows over the past week or so that bear special mention.

GASHOLE! Summer Wind with Karen Mack & Michael Holland

Karen Mack & Michael Holland have created a veritable franchise with their very popular "GASHOLE!" series of shows, garnering awards and accolades and selling out nearly every appearance. I caught the latest version "GASHOLE! Summer Wind" at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/ ) last week, and I once again experienced the clever medley/arrangements of the very talented Mr. Holland and the lovely singing voice and witty quips of Ms. Mack. The show included just about every "summer" song ever written, and the stage was decorated with beach balls, and the latest "GASHOLE" drink (a green colored concoction the composition of which I dared not ask) was available for all the revelers in the audience. And revelers are many and quite vocal at a "GASHOLE!" show. As usual, the show was total entertainment, light and frothy. An interesting benefit of these shows is the subliminal musical insights that the pair pass along as they zoom at light speed through the various medleys. Does "pop" music all sound the same? Well, the songs often blend so easily together, one could make a strong case for that conclusion. They make it look so easy, but that should not make you less appreciative of the time, energy and hard work these two put into the planning and execution of a "GASHOLE!" event. Apparently that fact is not lost to their thronging admirers who but every available seat at each show.

"GASHOLE! Summer Wind!" with Karen Mack & Michael Holland continues at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/) with remaining performances on Wednesdays, August 21st & 28th, both shows at 9:00 pm. There is a $15 cover, 2-drink minimum. The talented pair will also appear at FEZ Under TIME CAFE (380 Lafayette Street, NYC - 1-212-533-7000- http://www.feznyc.com/ ) on Monday, August 18th at 8:00 pm.

A SLICE 'O MINNELLI with Rick Skye

Rick Skye has the enviable position of being a celebrity impersonator playing a performer who is still living, with an ongoing life/saga that never ceases to provide him with new material for his act. Bringing his "Slice of Minnelli" show downtown to THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/ ), he had the fortunate advantage that once again Liza has provided new and exciting headlines that had me scurrying downtown to see how the ultra-talented Mr. Skye would handle the situation. Again, he more than rose to the occasion, adding a new line here, a new verse there as he carefully, adroitly, and magnificently reproduced this delirious diva's life story. The interesting thing about this award-winning show, which has been playing at various venues of about two years, it that in spite of the fun, in spite of the delicious parody songs and lyrics, in spite of the witty, well tuned asides and comments, one really begins to love and want to support Liza - the actual Liza - as Mr. Skye portrays her ups and downs, her triumphs and her failures. By the end of the show, as Skye's Liza pays tribute to her famous mother, you want to rush on stage and embrace her, and offer your love and support. Rick presents an amazing hour of fine writing, amazing impersonation, and true love for his material - and the woman he sings as and about. The show is well worth several visits, because the quips and intricate parody lines fly by so fast, you find yourself returning to savor them again. I have seen this evolving show, that changes as quickly as the items on Page Six, each time.

Unfortunately, Rick Skye has just one more show scheduled this month at THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/ ), on Wednesday, August 13th, at 7:00 pm. I urge you to see it - even if you have already seen it before!

LOVE ... OR THE LACK THEREOF with Vicki Modica

Vicki Modica made her solo cabaret debut at THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/) with just three shows for now, but stand by, since I am certain there will be more to come. While the title and subject of the show "Love ... or the Lack Thereof," is probably as old as cabaret itself, and several of the songs performed have been already overexposed in cabaret, Ms. Modica's take on both the songs and the material was refreshing and at times exciting. The inspired selection of a very young and handsome Marshall Callaway as musical director allowed Ms. Modica to take the rough edges off of her own excitable actions, often using Mr. Marshall's easygoing attitude and ready smile to make a soft landing. Ms. Modica's vocals are extraordinary, with a range that covers several octaves with ease. Her voice has incredible power - at times making me wish that the sound technician would ease back a bit. Her song selections were mostly from musical theater, where she has had most of her experience. Usually, when a person moves from theater to cabaret they take along a lot of props and make a lot of extra movements and facial expressions, and Ms. Modica was no exception. But it was an hour well spent watching a newcomer to cabaret make her entrance. I look forward to her future performances as she adjusts to the more intimate nature of cabaret performance.

Vicky Modica has one more scheduled performance at THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/), on Friday, August 12th at 9:00 pm.

OKLAHOMOSEXUAL with Brad Loekle

Brad Loekle made his solo cabaret debut at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/) with his show "Oklahomosexual" on Sunday, August 3rd and because I was delayed by several subway route changes, I ended up at his show rather than getting to the CD Show that Barb & Scott Siegel presented a few blocks away at DILLON'S. The show is subtitled "A Comic Look at the Life of a Non-Union Actor," and in the show Brad, through story and song, relates his experience performing as 'Curley' in the show OKLAHOMA in summer stock on an island off the coast of Georgia. The result is a high-spirited show performed by another vocally-rich new-to-cabaret talent. With musical direction by D. Jay Bradley, and direction by comedy expert Jay Rogers, the show was further blessed by Traci Reynolds, who played several parts in the Southern-fried saga. I don't normally write about shows that feature "boys in their underwear" but this bit, at the top of the show, was a brief as the skivvies worn. At least it emphasized the incredulity of a casting agent choosing Mr. Loekle for this part - Mr. Loekle is not buff, not tall, and certainly not curly - and what about the ballet scenes? There are a lot of plot twists, a gay romance that quickly fails and even turns a bit ugly, back stage accidents and on stage gaffes, and the ever present threat of sudden massive thunderstorms - with Mr. Loekle facing every obstacle with a clever comment or appropriate song and several song parodies. It is strictly adult humor, and not for religious fundamentalists (a few of whom appear in the tale, played by Ms. Reynolds) and I know that a puppet playing the part of Jesus would not be a big hit outside of Manhattan. But it is all in fun - mostly clean fun. There are times when Mr. Loekle's stories get a bit too long and a tad too graphic, especially since he has such a fantastic voice and one longs for him to sing more.

Brad Loekle has two more shows scheduled for his show "Oklahomosexual" at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/), on Sunday, August 10th at 8:00 pm and Monday, August 11th at 9:30 pm. I saw it on opening night, and enjoyed it. I'm sure the few kinks and clinkers in the show have been fixed, and of you attend you will have an enjoyable hour of fun.

There will be more cabaret mini-reviews in the next Mid-Week issue of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE newsletter. I have also been collecting them for a special section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/ ) where I can expand on my comments and include a photo when possible. I will also be adding several that will not appear in the e-mail CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE issues. I'll let you know when they are posted.

FIRST MEMBERSHIP CARDS READY TO BE MAILED OUT

Your membership takes on extra value this year, when you receive your CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE Membership Card (We will be sending out the first 50 cards tomorrow morning). You can use it for discounts on select shows around the country, and other discount offers for cabaret related items. And any show that offers a discount to CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE members will now be included in a special new section the MONDAY issue of the newsletter and will also be listed on the special MEMBER DEALS page in the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/MembersOnly.shtml).

To be eligible for a listing in this section and on the website, you must send me your flier and/or other promotional material showing the discount offer. I will use that information for the website and newsletter listing. Please confirm that you have sent me the material with an e-mail reminder so I can watch for it. Be sure you check with the venue where your show is being performed, to make sure that these discounts are permitted.

Another deal: If you place a banner ad on the website, and also offer a show discount to CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE members, you can take a 10% PayPal payment discount instead of the current 5% on your banner ad payment, if the total cost of your ad is over $100. CABARET NEWS ON THE WEBSITE

Information about other shows around the country and around the world can be found on the BREAKING NEWS page of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/ ). How do you get an item posted in the BREAKING NEWS section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website? Just e-mail me a press release of at least four paragraphs, giving the complete information on your show, CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available.

Please send me complete information - and do not merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference to a website. With two newsletters going out a week, I don't have enough time to look these things up, and often have to simply toss out incomplete items. By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from the press releases I receive before using the item on my website or in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the four or more paragraphs.

PIANO BAR TOUR TONIGHT?

Well, its official. By decree of the super-diva of all cabaret, Karen Mason, my BirthMonth has been extended by at least two more weeks. The ruling was made on the basis of the many nights of rainy or very hot weather in July. So, I have decided, stamina permitting, to hold Part One of my annual BirthMonth piano bar tour tonight. You are welcome to join in anywhere along the way:

First stop will be The Backroom at DILLON'S (245 West 54th Street, NYC - 212-307-9797) (Ricky Ritzel with Leslie Anderson) around 10:00 pm. Next stop will be DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/ ) (Bill Graves and other top talent) around 10:30 pm. Then a quick stop across the street at DANNY'S SKYLIGHT ROOM (342 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-265-8133 - http://www.dannysgrandseapalace.com/ ) (Jerry Scott & Friends) - around 11:00 pm. For there, I hope to make it to REGENTS (317 East 53rd Street, NYC - 212-593-3091 - http://www.RegentsClub.com) before catching the bus home. There is a bus a few blocks from REGENT'S that runs all night and takes me directly to my street.

More stops may be added if I feel up to it - but in any case, stay tuned for Part Two with stops at ROSES'S TURN, THE DUPLEX, MARIE'S CRISIS and other Village piano bars.

Part Three will include BRANDY'S, TOWNHOUSE and maybe REGENT'S if I don't get to those clubs tonight.

(As with all live cabaret events, schedule is subject to change without notice)

IT'S TIME TO GO - MORE ON MONDAY

No I intend to take a long nap and prepare for the long night ahead. I actually will not be attending any shows tonight so I can travel light. Tonight will be strictly spent in the piano bars. When I lived in Manhattan this was a nightly ritual to end my day, and I really miss all the fun.

Shows I plan to see the coming week include Natalie Douglas at 7:00 pm and BJ Crosby at 9:00 pm on Sunday at THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/), Milla Ilieva on Monday at 8:30 pm at The Backroom at DILLON'S (245 West 54th Street, NYC - 212-307-9797) and Richard Costa at 9:15 pm on Wednesday at DANNY'S SKYLIGHT ROOM (342 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-265-8133 - http://www.dannysgrandseapalace.com/).

Time to e-mail this issue off - with just one more plea. I hope a lot of you will sign on as CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE members this year, The first year we tried this we almost hit 300 members, and this past year we passed the 350 member mark (nearly a 20% increase). A similar increase this year would bring us over 400 members. Personally, I am hoping for more than 500 members - enabling us to provide even more services, and even finally compensate some of the folks who have been writing reviews and assisting in the website work.

But most of all, your membership donation is a way for you to encourage me in my efforts to promote the art of cabaret, and support this newsletter and the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/ ). Your continued support is truly appreciated!

And that is just about the way it was.

Hugs & Stuff,

STU
