CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE #030802 - PART ONE - Monday, August 11, 2003
Since 1990 Your First, Best, and Only Complete Source of Cabaret News

If it's anything to do with cabaret, you'll probably read it here first!

This is a MONDAY Issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE which includes the regular "Major Rooms" and "Other Rooms" listings for around the world, and will also give information on all the banner ads running on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/). The MID-WEEK issue, usually sent on Thursdays, will concentrate more on news, breaking stories and notes and mini-reviews of shows seen.

The NYC area is on the verge of breaking a record - for the number of consecutive rainy days! So far we have had rainfall on 12 days in a row, and if it rains today (as predicted) it will put us one day shy of the record. Last summer at this very time we were experiencing a severe water shortage, and restaurants were forbidden to serve water unless requested, sidewalks could not be washed, lawns could not be watered, etc. Go figure!

In fact, the heavy downpour on last Thursday night caused a quick end to my planned "Piano Bar Tour." I made it to DILLON'S (245 West 54th Street, NYC - 212-307-9797), where I caught the tail end of the "Joan & Hal Show," and then fabulous piano bar and open mic with Ricky Ritzel at the piano. Leslie Anderson was the singing waiter, and while enjoying a great Chicken Caesar Salad, Ricky and Leslie entertained. Much fun.

But then it was 8 blocks to walk in heavy rain to my second & third stops on West 46th Street at DON'T TELL MAMA & DANNY'S, and it was already 11:30 pm (I lingered a bit longer than planned) and my subway stop was right along the way - so I yielded to circumstances and headed back to Queens. Needless to say, a "rain date" for the rest of the tour will be announced shortly.

Meantime, I have been asking around, in piano bars and clubs, as to how the draconian "no smoking" rules have affected business. A few months into the new system has seen an apparent 30% to 50% drop in business, as reported to me by waiters, performers and club owners/managers. There has been no smoking in the NYC cabaret clubs in many years, so cabaret business seems to be unaffected, but the poor folks in the piano bars have really suffered. There have been staff cutbacks right and left, and one waiter told me that one big problem seems to be the loss of tourist business, especially from Europe and Asia. Tourists seem to be either skipping NYC or spending fewer nights there, opting to seek their entertainment in other cities like New Orleans, etc. This has had an impact also on Broadway as well. We shall see how this all turns out. By the way, I have never smoked, so my only stake in all this is the full employment of by friends in the service industry and the continued profits of the clubs I write about.

Plenty of BANNER AD spaces on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website are currently available for the rest of month of August, but we are getting a lot of orders for September & October. Keep in mind, I limit the ads to 20 banners per week, so if you plan to order a banner, reserve your banner space as soon as possible. Banner ads are displayed at random in two places on nearly all 2,500+ pages. This means your ad could be seen as many as 3,000 times each day, 21,000 times each week! You can run a banner for 2 weeks on CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE for just $80 - in full color - with a "live link" to your website, if applicable. That's before any member rebates or discounts. In addition, those running banners get mentioned every week in the MONDAY issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE e-mail newsletter (current circulation nearly 2,500) as long as the banner is running. For information on banner ads, check out the banner information page on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/BannerHere.shtml), or simply send me a note at banners@svhamstra.com with the single word "Banner" in the subject line and I'll send all the details.

COMING NEXT ISSUE

We will be sending out the MID-WEEK issue in a few days which will include reports/reviews on shows seen, as well as more news items, more cabaret listings and a rundown of new BREAKING NEWS items added to the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/) since the last mid-week issue. This week I will be reviewing shows seen a second time, including shows by Baby Jane Dexter, Natalie Douglas, Susan Neuffer & Ronit Ray.

Now I must send this issue off - once again I have been chained to this computer since about 7:00 am and my eyes are getting a little bleary. Tonight I am off to KING KONG ROOM at the Supper Club (240 West 47th Street, NYC - 1-212-921-1904 - http://www.KingKongRoom.com/) to catch Phillip Officer's show at 7:00 pm and then make a mad dash to The Backroom at DILLON'S (245 West 54th Street, NYC - 212-307-9797) to catch Milla Ilieva's show at 8:30 pm. It will be my first time seeing cabaret in either room, so I am looking forward to both shows in anticipation.

Thanks once more to all the folks who sent in their membership donations these past weeks. We are now more than halfway towards out goal of 400 members for 2003-2004 - of course it would be great if we could reach an even higher number, but we have many more months to go before the next membership year.

And that is just about the way it was.

Hugs & Stuff,

STU
