CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE #030803 - PART ONE - Monday, August 18, 2003
Since 1990 Your First, Best, and Only Complete Source of Cabaret News
If it's anything
to do with cabaret, you'll probably read it here first!
This is a
MONDAY Issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE which includes the regular
"Major Rooms" and "Other Rooms" listings for around the world, and
will also give information on all the banner ads running on the CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/).
The MID-WEEK issue, usually sent on Thursdays, will concentrate more
on news, breaking stories and notes and mini-reviews of shows seen.
I am sure
that every one of the 50 million or so folks who experienced the "Blackout
of 2003" last Thursday has a story - but this is my newsletter, so
here's mine (a few folks have posted their experiences on the CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE MESSAGE BOARD).
As soon as
I finished last Thursday's MID-WEEK issue, I headed onto Manhattan
to assist someone who was having computer problems (a little sideline
I have). My client lived on the seventh floor and when I arrived around
3:30 pm, all was well. In fact, the problem turned out to be a loose
connection and we had it fixed in just minutes. The client had some
questions on other computer issues, and we were had just phoned APPLE
COMPUTER to get some clarification on one of the issue when the lights
went out. Our initial reaction was a blown circuit breaker, but after
a check of the totally dark hallway, and a look out a window at the
apartments across the way, we realized that it was more than that.
My client
was fully prepared for any emergency - having purchased many items
after the terrorist scare we had a while back. The supply included
several flashlights and a dozen or so extra batteries, two portable
radios, bottled water and more. I didn't see any duct tape or plastic
sheeting, but I am sure there was some packed away just in case.
We waited
a while, and finally some radio stations got back online, and the
first hints of the calamity were revealed. By this time it was nearly
4:30 and I decided that my best course of action was to try to get
back to my apartment in Queens before dark. Borrowing a flashlight,
I slowly made my way down the 7 flights of stairs, meeting many residents
along the way climbing up the stairs. Then I walked about 10 blocks
(there are 20 NYC blocks to a mile, so it was merely a half-mile),
to the Queensboro (59th Street) bridge (http://www.nycroads.com/crossings/queensboro/).
Traffic in the street and on the sidewalk was unbelievable. There
were no traffic lights working, and Second Avenue was in total gridlock.
All the stores along the way were closing - pulling down their metal
shutters, moving customers on to the sidewalks.
A bus that
goes right to my street in Queens starts its route at 58th Street
and Second Avenue in Manhattan, but I quickly realized that no bus
would arrive anytime soon, so I made the decision to join the thousands
of folks who had already started to hike across the bridge. Built
in 1909, the bridge is nearly 7,500 feet long - a fact I discovered
one foot at a time. Temperatures were in the high 80s (f) and by the
time at reached the Queens side I was tired, hot and thirsty. A small
bodega was selling soda and water - you would enter the dark store,
hand the fellow a dollar and make your request and a lad with a flashlight
would retrieve your beverage from a dark cooler at the back of the
store (I actually thought I would be charged a lot more, but no price
gouging here). I stepped to the curb to survey the situation - it
was nearly exactly 6:00 pm. Traffic police (we have several "brands"
of police here in NYC) and were beginning to try to make order out
of chaos, and they immediately blocked the Manhattan bound lanes -
they did the same on all entry bridges and tunnels into the city.
I drank the
bottle completely, and was looking for a trash receptacle to dispose
of it when out of nowhere - well actually from around the corner -
a bus appeared before me, and empty bus, and it was MY bus. Without
noticing it, I was standing in the first bus stop in Queens - the
bus, having been refused entry into Manhattan, had dropped off all
its NYC-bound passengers, and had gone around the block to return
to its reverse route. I was second on board - I had to resist kissing
the driver - and the bus soon filled behind me. In less that 30 minutes
I was dropped at the corner of my street, less than 100 feet from
my door! (The "sparrow" survives again!)
Power was
finally restored at 5:30 am on Friday to my block - the subways were
not up and running until 5:00 am on Saturday - but bus service was
continuous throughout (and free). Accept for some cold cuts that I
didn't like the look of, the stuff in the fridge and the freezer survived
intact - I had decided on my return home to not open the door of either
unit until the power returned, and kept my pledge. The ice cream in
the freezer was soft but still quite cold, and the milk in the fridge
was still cold and fresh-smelling. I spent most of Friday catching
up on sleep lost, working on the website, and attempting to answer
some of the hundred or so e-mails that had accumulated over the blackout.
By noon on
Saturday nearly everything was back to normal, and I headed into Manhattan
late in the day to catch Barbara Fasano's show at THE DUPLEX CABARET
THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/)
at 7:00 pm.
Note to all:
Maryann Lopinto lives in an apartment complex that generates its own
power in the Chelsea section of NYC, so if you wish her address for
future reference, send me an e-mail. I am sure that she would be more
than happy to have you sleep over in the event of a future blackout.
She has a vast collection of cabaret videos to entertain you with.
Several of
the e-mails received since Thursday have been in response to the item
I wrote in the MID-WEEK newsletter regarding billing/gratuity practices
of several clubs, and the especially shoddy practices I experienced
at a particular club - problems which I am assured by the management
have been addressed. Many wrote to say that the real problem is that
many folks, especially tourists, do not leave a tip, and thus the
club adds the automatic charge on the bill. Now, in a previous life,
I used to drive a limousine and know exactly what being "stiffed"
by a customer feels like. However, when I switched to being dispatcher
and a driver complained about receiving no tip, or a small one, I
offered to give the driver the difference any time he received less
than a 15% tip if he would give me anything over 15% that he received
- no one ever took me up on that offer. Adding an automatic tip to
a bill completely contradicts the concept of "gratuity." You might
as well call it a "service tax."
And please
don't excuse foreign tourists (and some non-foreign ones) by saying
they are ignorant about the American practice of leaving a gratuity.
Every guide book, every travel magazine, and every travel agent describes
the American practice in detail - those that don't tip aren't ignorant,
they are cheap, stupid and crude - not your regular cabaret lovers!
These are the same folks that I have seen read and compare every menu
posted outside the restaurants on West 46th Street, studying the prices
on every menu - not even paying attention to the food descriptions.
They wine & dine based on price, not quality, flavor or service.
A few writers
pointed out another insidious practice, that apparently is even illegal
here in NYC anyway: adding tax to a total including the cover charge.
As soon as I check this out, I will pass along the names of clubs
apparently doing this - and if you have information, let me know.
Speaking of sales tax, why is it that if you sit at the bar and pay
drink by drink, you usually don't get charged a sales tax, but if
you run a tab, the tax gets added?

BANNER SPACES AVAILABLE
Plenty of
BANNER AD spaces on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website are currently
available for the rest of month of August, but we are getting a lot
of orders for September & October - especially around the time of
the October Cabaret Convention here in NYC. Keep in mind, I limit
the ads to 20 banners per week, so if you plan to order a banner,
reserve your banner space as soon as possible. Banner ads are displayed
at random in two places on nearly all 2,500+ pages. This means your
ad could be seen as many as 3,000 times each day, 21,000 times each
week! You can run a banner for 2 weeks on CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE for
just $80 - in full color - with a "live link" to your website, if
applicable. That's before any member rebates or discounts. In addition,
those running banners get mentioned every week in the MONDAY issue
of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE e-mail newsletter (current circulation nearly
2,500) as long as the banner is running.
For information
on banner ads, check out the banner information page on the CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/BannerHere.shtml),
or simply send me a note at banners@svhamstra.com
with the single word "Banner" in the subject line and I'll send all
the details.

more to all the folks who sent in their membership donations these
past weeks. We are now more than halfway towards out goal of 400 members
for 2003-2004 - of course it would be great if we could reach an even
higher number, but we have many more months to go before the next
membership year.
And that
is just about the way it was.
