CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE #030803 - MID-WEEK - Thursday, August 21, 2003
Since 1990 Your First, Best, and Only Complete Source of Cabaret News
If it's anything to do with cabaret, you'll probably read it here
first!
This is the "MID-WEEK CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE," part two of the issue
we sent out on Monday. The MONDAY issue includes the regular listings
for cabarets around the world, and also has information on all the
banner ads running on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website. Soon, the
Monday issue will also include listings of shows offering discounts
to CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE members. This "MID-WEEK" issue will concentrate
more on news, late breaking stories and notes on shows seen.
HERE A VIRUS, THERE A VIRUS,
EVERYWHERE A VIRUS
It is bad enough that
my DSL line has been shutting down unexpectedly ever since the blackout
last Thursday, but apparently there is a new type of virus making
the rounds on the internet - one called "Sobig.F" - whose aim is to
turn WINDOWS PCs into spam machines. It is believed by experts to
be the fastest growing virus ever.
"Sobig.F" drops software onto infected WINDOWS computers that open
them to be used later for distributing Internet spam - unwanted e-mails
and product promotions. The "SoBig" virus spreads when unsuspecting
computer users open file attachments in e-mails that contain such
familiar headings as "Thank you," "Re: Details" or "Re: approved."
Once the file is opened, "SoBig," which first appeared Monday, scours
the computer for e-mail addresses, checking in Word documents, Internet
logs and e-mail in-boxes. Designed like mass-mailing spam programs,
it then sends scores of messages to the addresses it has collected.
Since I have five mailboxes on CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE alone, plus
handle the e-mail for a few other websites that I maintain, I have
been receiving these e-mails at the rate of over 100 an hour! Last
night I left the computer at 5:00 pm and when I returned at midnight,
over 700 of these bogus notes were waiting. This morning there were
nearly 500 more! Some of them actually had my e-mail address as the
sender - even though the virus is spread only by WINDOWS machines
- I have a MAC.
The result has been a slowdown all over the internet - web pages load
more slowly, some websites are unavailable because the computers that
hold them are kept busy handling hundreds of thousand more e-mails
than usual. AOL reported trapping over 11 million such e-mails in
its spam filtering software.
This one follows closely after the famous "Blaster" worm virus that
infected Microsoft-based WINDOWS computers last week - causing them
to shutdown again and again, and secretly causing the infected computers
(it is estimated that over 500,000 were infected) to send a slew of
e-mails to a particular Microsoft website on one day - effectively
shutting down the site. Microsoft beat them to the punch by closing
down the website itself.
Why don't people write these things to attack MAC computers? Probably
because only about 6 percent of the PCs out there are MACs and it
wouldn't make the big headlines that there computer creeps are looking
for. I guess it pays to be different!
In any case, it has been a struggle to delete a thousand e-mails a
day in order to keep my mailboxes from filling up and making it impossible
for legitimate e-mails to reach me, and possibly shutting down the
CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website completely.
Things have settled down a bit today, and the DSL service has been
stable as well. Hopefully I can get this issue off to you without
further incident.

Melody Grell, who has been booking CHEZ SUZETTE (675B Ninth Avenue,
NYC - 1-212-974-9002 - http://www.chezsuzettenyc.com/)
for several months, sent me a note that Lea DeLaria will be giving
a special jazz performance tonight, Thursday, August 21st at this
theater-area restaurant/cabaret at around 11:00 pm. Melody also report
that they have purchased a piano for the club and it will be installed
as soon as they complete enlarging the stage area. Check out their
website for their complete schedule of events.
PUPPET/MAGIC SHOW AT ROSE'S TURN
I very rarely recommend a show by a performer I have never seen, but
there is a show running this week at UPSTAIRS AT ROSE'S TURN (55 Grove
Street, NYC - 1-212-366-5438 - http://www.rosesturn.com/)
that piqued my interest, so I made a reservation for Friday night.
The show is called "An Evening of Dusty Floors" (see: http://www.aneveningofdustyfloors.com/)
and features Timothy Mark Reilly and his puppet Dusty. I hear that
there are also some magic tricks involved. What caught my attention
when I checked out the website was that Mr. Reilly served for many
years as an assistant to Wayland Flowers - and his famous puppet Madame.
When Wayland passed away in October of 1988, Timothy was approached
by his manager Marlena Shell and producer Sid Kroft to put an act
together with their guidance, and go out on the road. He has been
doing it ever since, and appears at ROSE'S TURN starting tonight,
Thursday, August 21st at 9:00 pm, with additional shows on Friday
the 22nd at 9:00 pm, Saturday the 23rd at 11:00 pm and Sunday afternoon,
the 24th at 5:00 pm. Sounds like fun!

DON'T TELL MAMA, and has since played at ROSE'S TURN, JOE'S PUB and

BEST TO RESERVE BANNER SPACE RIGHT AWAY!
BANNER AD spaces on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website are suddenly
selling fast and the orders are coming in for September & October
as the NY Cabaret Convention approaches. Keep in mind, I limit the
ads to 20 banners per week, so if you plan to order a banner, reserve
your banner space as soon as possible. Over 6,000 quality, cabaret-loving
folks visit our website each day - and they look at on average of
6 or 7 pages each. Even more visit in late September and October,
looking for shows to see while they are in town for the convention.
Banner ads are displayed at random in two places on nearly all 2,500+
pages. This means your ad could be seen as many as 3,000 times each
day, 21,000 times each week!
In addition, those running banners get mentioned every week in the
Monday issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE e-mail newsletter (current
circulation nearly 2,500) as long as the banner is running. Even more
important, you can run a banner for 2 weeks on CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
for just $80 - in full color - with a "live link" to your website,
if applicable. That's before any member rebates or discounts.
For information on banner ads, check out the banner information page
on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/BannerHere.shtml),
or simply send me a note at banners@svhamstra.com
with the single word "Banner" in the subject line and I'll send all
the details.

SHOWS SEEN
One of the reasons why I went to two issues of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
per week is that the single issues were getting so filled with listings
stuff, I had no room to mention shows seen and other items of interest.
This time I will cover several shows that I saw earlier this year,
and returned for a second visit.
PHILLIP OFFICER AT KING KONG ROOM
It was my first visit to the quickly emerging cabaret space, the KING
KONG ROOM at the Supper Club (240 West 47th Street, NYC - 1-212-921-1904
- http://www.KingKongRoom.com/).
Jim Caruso has been developing cabaret events at this amazing room
for some time now, and hopefully this room will develop into a major
cabaret showcase as time goes by. Right now the events are centered
on Monday nights, with Phillip Officer appearing at 7:00 pm, a series
of artists at 8:30 pm, and the notorious "Cast Party" open-mike, piano-bar
style events at 10:00 pm until whenever. The room, dominated by a
huge portrait of the world's most famous gorilla, harkens the nightclub
days of yore, and was a perfect setting for Mr. Officer's tribute
show to Burton Lane. There is no better male vocalist in NYC than
Phillip Officer, and no better interpreter of lyrics, either. Mr.
Officer's acting experience is evident, but he never slips into "acting
mode," always singing from a point of truth and feeling. Because of
a schedule conflict, Mr. Officers usual musical director Dick Gallagher
was replaced for the night by the very able Tex Arnold. The show wavered
slightly from the prepared song list, but this was evident only to
those in the room who had a copy of the list. Many of the songs were
familiar titles, but Mr. Officer wisely sprinkled a few lesser-known
numbers among the popular tunes. Mr. Lane wrote the music for the
songs, with several lyricists delivering the words, including Yip
Harburg, Frank Loesser, Alan Jay Lerner and Ira Gershwin. Mr. Officers
impeccable delivery and captivating vocal style make this show a true
cabaret event that should not be missed.
Phillip Officer has just two more shows at the KING KONG ROOM at the
Supper Club (240 West 47th Street, NYC - 1-212-921-1904 - http://www.KingKongRoom.com/),
on Mondays, August 24th & 31st, both shows at 7:00 pm. If you want
to see a show with elegance and style in a room that exudes elegance
and style, this is the one for you!
LUDMILLA ILIEVA AT DILLON'S
It has been some time since I heard the glorious vocals of Ludmilla
Ilieva, and I had never seen a cabaret show at The Backroom at DILLON'S
(245 West 54th Street, NYC - 212-307-9797) since it received a face-lift
and reorganization by its new booking manager Scott Barbarino, so
I had a double-treat when at attended her sold-out opening night of
"Do Re Milla" on Monday, August 11th. The cabaret room at DILLON'S
appears to be nearly square, and the stage area covers nearly the
whole length of one wall, and extends quite a way into the room -
making this space ideal for shows that have a band and/or a number
of back-up singers. The room is simply but elegantly appointed, and
the sound system seems top-rate (I was seated way to one side, but
the sound seemed even and true). Ms. Ilieva has one of the finest
vocal instruments in cabaret. Her classical training is evident, yet
she rarely overpowers - as some classically trained vocalists are
apt to do. The show has plenty of comic moments, some delightful stories,
and a wide selection of songs - allowing Ms. Ilieva to demonstrate
the full range of her prowess. Some inspired medleys add sparkle to
an already sparkling song list, including an amazing arrangement of
"Losing My Mind" & "Thinking of You," and an equally exciting "Whistling
Away the Dark" & "Dancing in the Dark." The amazing arrangements by
musical director Paul Trueblood were a perfect support to Ms. Ilieva's
lovely vocals. Mr. Trueblood even contributed a throw-away comedy
piece called "Tear Joint" - a collaboration with Jim Morgan. My only
quibble might be with Ludmilla's habit of changing accents and dialects
nearly from song to song - including an amazing verse supposedly sung
by her southern mom in a Brooklyn accent - true to the original setting
of the song, but in sharp contrast to the setting of the patter that
preceded it. However, the audience was delighted with the show, and
I was as well.
Ludmilla Ilieva has four more shows in this series at The Backroom
at DILLON'S (245 West 54th Street, NYC - 212-307-9797), on Monday,
August 25th, and Tuesdays, September 2nd, 9th & 16th - all shows at
8:30 pm - with dinner available in the cabaret room before the show.
You are guaranteed a delightfully entertaining cabaret evening.
BARBARA FASANO AT THE DUPLEX
My favorite girl of summer, Barbara Fasano, is currently performing
at THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438
- http://www.theduplex.com/),
and I caught her "Fields of Gold" show last week Saturday, the 16th
at 7:00 pm. No one epitomizes beauty and grace like Ms. Fasano, and
her show - a collection of her favorites - was another masterpiece.
With musical director Rick Jensen at the piano, the show demonstrated
again the amazing collaborative talents of these two cabaret veterans.
There are times when Ms. Fasano's vocals and Mr. Jensen's accompaniment
seem to be on divergent paths - yet when the paths cross, it is a
precise meeting and a precious moment. Of course, no one comes close
to Ms. Fasano's "In the Still of the Night," which has become her
signature song. But she has not rested with this one song, but has
now given her special interpretive skills to several more songs, including
the title song of the show, "Fields of Gold" by Sting. Her introduction
to "Don't Fence Me In" got a little sidetracked because Julie Wilson
was at the show and added her own comments from the audience to Barbara's
patter. My companion, not familiar with Ms. Wilson's habit of contributing
to the patter, thought she was a heckler. My favorites were the rarely
heard "I Cover the Waterfront," and the two opening numbers, "The
Way You Look Tonight" and "On The Sunny Side of the Street," both
with Dorothy Fields' lyrics. Her closing song was "Do Nothing Til
You Hear From Me," and it is my personal hope that Ms. Fasano will
let us hear from her often.
Barbara Fasano has three more performances of "Fields of Gold" at
THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438
- http://www.theduplex.com/) on Saturdays, August 23rd and September
13th & 20th, all shows at 7:00 pm. Her clear, crisp musical style
is a cabaret treasure.
My DSL line is getting flaky so I will send this issue out while I
can, and hold the remaining reviews until next week - still to come:
Richard Holbrook, BJ Crosby and Diane D'Angelo. There will be more
cabaret mini-reviews in the next Mid-Week issue of the CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE newsletter. I have also been collecting them for a special
section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/
) where I can expand on my comments and include a photo when possible.
I will also be adding several that will not appear in the e-mail CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE issues. I'll let you know when they are posted.

How do you get an item posted in the BREAKING NEWS section of the
CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/
)? Just e-mail me a press release of at least four paragraphs, giving
the complete information on your show, CD release or other cabaret
related event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available.
Please send me complete information - and do not merely e-mail me
a copy of your flier or a reference to a website. With two newsletters
going out a week, I don't have enough time to look these things up,
and often have to simply toss out incomplete items. By the way, I
usually trim quotes from reviews from the press releases I receive
before using the item on my website or in the newsletter, so don't
count them when putting together the four or more paragraphs.
IT'S TIME TO GO - MORE ON MONDAY
Well, its 4:00 pm - and I had better get this issue off before the
DSL line goes kafluey. I have so much work to do - I completely set
aside adding all the new 2003-2004 members to my database for a few
days, and new memberships keep coming in - so I am taking another
night off tonight from cabaret. In fact I have only one advance show
reservation between now and next week Thursday! I will only make reservations
when I feel I have done enough of my office work to deserve a visit
to a cabaret show!
I hope a lot of you will sign on as CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE members
this year, The first year we tried this we almost hit 300 members,
and this past year we passed the 350 member mark (nearly a 20% increase).
A similar increase this year would bring us over 400 members. Personally,
I am hoping for more than 500 members - dare I hope for 1,000? - enabling
us to provide even more services, get around to more cities and even
finally be able to compensate some of the folks who have been writing
reviews and assisting in the website work - and maybe attract more
writers to contribute material, news and reviews.
But most of all, your membership donation is a way for you to encourage
me in my efforts to promote the art of cabaret, and support this newsletter
and the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/
). Your continued support is truly appreciated!
And that is just about the way it was.
