CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE #030902 - Thursday, September 4, 2003
Since 1990 Your First, Best, and Only Complete Source of Cabaret News
If it's anything to do with cabaret, you'll probably read it here
first!
This is the "MID-WEEK" CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE. The MONDAY issue includes
the regular listings for cabarets around the world, and also has information
on all the banner ads running on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website.
The Monday issue also includes listings of shows offering discounts
to CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE members. This "MID-WEEK" issue covers other
news, late breaking stories and notes on shows seen.
This is our fourth day of rain in a row - and I mean rain! But, according
to the weather reports, the next few days will be sunny, but remaining
on the cool side. Actually, it has been a bit of a blessing in disguise,
since I have had so much "office work" to do. Several of the MEMBERSHIP
CARD letters have been returned because of improper address - and
now I have begun packing the nearly 100 CDs I will be mailing out
to GOLD and above members. I'm glad I waited - a 37-cent investment
to see if the address was correct for all members will mean a lot
when I start mailing out CDs at a postage rate of $1.50 or so!
The floor around my computer is stacked with CDs and padded envelopes,
and as soon as I finish adding a bunch of new items to the BREAKING
NEWS section of the website, the project will begin. All the CDs were
donated by cabaret artists and their fans, and I will pack them and
seal them all before applying labels - my way of 'randomizing' the
selections sent. The only exception is when one of the CDs belongs
to a member who is on the recipient list - these I pack separately
to make sure that the person doesn't get their own CD in error.
A BIG THANK YOU NOTE
Once again, I send a great big thank you to all the many folks who
have joined or rejoined as members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE in our
2003-2004 membership drive! Note that every membership donation I
receive is acknowledged within about 48 hours with a form e-mail letter.
Please check that the amount on the acknowledgement agrees with the
donation sent. We passed the 250 mark, and are heading for 300.
Note: Please make sure that your checks are made out to Stu Hamstra,
rather than CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE. I have had to send back several
checks.
THANKS TO OUR RENEWING CHARTER MEMBERS!
The following four additional charter members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
joined in the past week for 2003-2004, making it the third year in
a row that they have supported the newsletter and the website:
CABARET WEST
Linda Amiel Burns
John Culver
John De Palma
Ellie Ellsworth
Tom Michael
Karen Saunders
Les Traub
Bonnie Weiss
An extra thanks to CABARET WEST - the only cabaret organization that
has actually joined as a member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, and has
been a member since we started the membership program in 2001! Nearly
275 folks have already joined for 2003-2004, and a large portion are
CHARTER members, who have supported CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE for three
years in a row, since our membership system began! We'll be listing
additional charter members each week as they join. Thanks to all charter
members for your continued support!

HAVEN'T JOINED YET?
Frankly, I am a bit surprised that so many folks have not joined as
a member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE this year. I have tried to make
the membership as inexpensive as possible, and this year there are
more benefits than ever - including discounts on selected cabaret
shows. And if $20 is too much, there is even a way to join for free!
(If you hurry - see next item.) If you find these messages and the
information and news on the website of value, then I hope you will
consider becoming a member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, since I depend
on your membership donations and banner ads to make this service possible.
Our new membership year began on July 6th for the 2003-2004 year.
Nearly 250 folks have already signed up for 2003-2004. You can join
for just $20 (SILVER LEVEL), or get special discounts and additional
benefits with a $75 (GOLD) donation (20% discount on banners, etc.),
or become a sponsoring member at higher levels.
For information on becoming a contributing member of CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE, check at http://svhamstra.com/Membership.shtml
or else just send me a note at membership@svhamstra.com
with the single word "membership" in the subject line, and I'll send
all the details. You can even send your donation by credit card via
PayPal - - if you make your donation by check, please make the check
payable simply to Stu Hamstra and send to 676A Ninth Avenue #120,
New York, NY 10036.
FOR THOSE WHO CAN'T AFFORD TO JOIN THIS YEAR
Can't afford the membership fee? Two folks have come forward with
two small donations to be used to give a SILVER membership to at least
6 subscribers, so if you are someone experiencing hard times right
now, drop me a note. Five persons have taken advantage of this offer
so far, so just one "free" membership remains. Your "free" SILVER
membership will allow you to deduct $20 from your first banner ad
in a membership year, allow you to have your CD listed in the CD SALE
section, get discounts on cabaret shows and other events where offered,
and get a listing on the appropriate SILVER MEMBER page.
It has to be first-come, first-served, so let me know right away if
you feel you need to take advantage of this offer. All will be in
confidence - the persons making the donations do not even wish to
know your name. And if, later this membership year, you can afford
the membership, you can make the donation to make it possible for
us to offer someone else a free membership.
DON'T SAY I DIDN'T WARN YOU
BANNER AD spaces on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website selling our
fast for September & October - especially around the time of the October
Cabaret Convention here in NYC. I have just 5 spaces left for several
of those weeks. Keep in mind, I limit the ads to 20 banners per week,
so if you plan to order a banner, reserve your banner space as soon
as possible. Banner ads are displayed at random in two places on nearly
all 2,500+ pages. This means your ad could be seen as many as 3,000
times each day, 21,000 times each week! You can run a banner for 2
weeks on CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE for just $80 - in full color - with
a "live link" to your website, if applicable. That's before any member
rebates or discounts. In addition, those running banners get mentioned
every week in the MONDAY issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE e-mail newsletter
(current circulation nearly 2,500) as long as the banner is running.
For information on banner ads, check out the banner information page
on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/BannerHere.shtml),
or simply send me a note at banners@svhamstra.com
with the single word "Banner" in the subject line and I'll send all
the details.
SHOWS SEEN
One of the reasons why I went to two issues of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
per week is that the single issues were getting so filled with listings
stuff, I had no room to mention shows seen and other items of interest.
This time I will cover several shows that I saw earlier this year,
and returned for a second visit.
DUSTY FLOORS AT ROSE'S TURN
I love a good puppet show - and they seem to be all the rage on Broadway
and off-Broadway this year, so I eagerly rushed down on August 22nd
to UPSTAIRS AT ROSE'S TURN (55 Grove Street, NYC - 1-212-366-5438
- http://www.rosesturn.com/)
to catch DUSTY FLOORS, with Timothy Mark Reilly - and his puppet friends.
Dusty is billed as "the oldest living drag queen," and is probably
a cousin of Wayland Flower's famous Madame. Mr. Reilly worked with
Mr. Flowers for several years, and if you enjoyed Madame's quick wit
and florid comments on the passing scene, you will feel right at home
in the company of Dusty. Now, this is not your "Saturday in the Park"
puppet show - it definitely is not for children. Instead, it is an
hour of laughs - and laughs - and laughs (with a few "groaners" thrown
in for - yes, laughs). Mr. Reilly, while dressed in black, never attempts
to hid the fact that his is Dusty's puppeteer - he even wanders through
the audience from time to time, while Dusty makes appropriate (and
sometimes inappropriate) comments. Others in this cast of misfits
are Bernice (escaped inmate from a mental hospital), Velveeta Johnson
(streetwalker/hair stylist) and Irv (a raunchy senior-senior citizen).
Each takes a turn at telling his or her story, and the show flies
by - as do the punch lines. Unfortunately, Mr. Reilly was in and out
of town so fast, not too many folks knew what a treat they were missing,
with just three shows, three nights in a row. Its bawdy, rowdy, wild
- and laugh after laugh after laugh!
Mr. Reilly, in an e-mail sent a week or so back, promised to return,
with a lot better advance publicity next booking. Keep an eye out
for this talented guy and his cast of zany puppets.
MYCHELLE COLLEARY AT THE DUPLEX
Sometimes I feel I have the best job in the world. The money isn't
so great, but I wouldn't trade the thrills I have experienced attending
cabaret performances for anything! Thus I was more than doubly rewarded
when I attended Mychelle Colleary's show "From Alcatraz to SingSing"
at THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438
- http://www.theduplex.com/)
on August 28th. Not only did I have the thrill of seeing a show I
had seen before done virtually to perfection, but I had the thrill
of seeing a performer I love achieve greatness in less than an hour!
With the amazingly talented John Di Pinto on piano (and accordion,
and bongos, and flute), and Ritt Henn on bass, the show was an amazing
showcase of this newly transplanted New Yorker's talent. Recently
relocated from San Francisco, the show used song and decidedly witty
patter to illustrate the difference between your left coast and your
right. But the vocals - oh my, oh my! Except for a few 'hairball'
moments (Ms. Colleary explained later that she was caring for a friend's
cat, and discovered she was allergic to cats) the vocals actually
stole the show. Mychelle included two songs that she had written:
"Suicidal Polly Anna" and "Analgesic," the first nearly a madrigal,
especially with the flute accompaniment, and the second as mystical
as its title. Special kudos to the sound technician (can his name
really be Chemo?) and the sound setup at THE DUPLEX - Ms. Colleary
finally sounded like Ms. Colleary!
You can catch this show just one more time at THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE
(61 Christopher Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/)
on Thursday, September 18th at 9:00 pm. Please make that reservation
- this show is simply wonderful! And, please Mr. Bond, arrange some
more dates at your club for this gal - she and the DUPLEX belong together!
CHELSEA HUDGINS AT THE DUPLEX
Chelsea Hudgins opened her Wednesday nights in September series last
night, September 3rd, at THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher
Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/),
with musical direction by Steven Ray Watkins, direction by Lennie
Watts and Liz Lark Brown, Amy Wolk, Lisa O'Neill on backups. Also
on stage were Michael Blanco on bass and Sean McDaniel on drums. But
not to worry, Ms. Hudgins did not get lost in the crowd on that stage
of talented performers. Except for a few "opening night" jitters here
an there, the lady was outstanding - she took over the stage, and
took over the house with her shining, amazing vocals and oft-time
"in your face" patter. The show is called "Satisfied," and we in the
audience were more than satisfied at the end of the hour. Opening
the show with a delightfully arranged blending of "His Eye Is On The
Sparrow" and "I Go To The Rock," Ms. Hudgins quickly explained that
she would not call herself religious, but certainly spiritual. And
it was that spirit that led her through the show, as she explained
how dealt with adversity and setbacks with an attitude of "satisfaction."
Mr. Watkins is to be applauded for the amazing disco medley of "working
songs" halfway through the show. That medley is, as they say, worth
the price of admission alone! I shall never want to hear, for example,
"It's an Art" from the musical WORKING, done any other way again (and
I seem to hear this one a lot in cabaret shows that feature performers
who wait tables as a primary income between jobs). Ms. Hudgins duet
with Mr. Watkins ("You're All I Need to Get By") was a special delight.
Chelsea's backup singers never failed her - or upstaged her, and the
band was spirited. This is the show I have been waiting for, ever
since I heard Ms. Hudgins a few years back in a performance showcase.
Now that the "opening night" nervousness is out of the way, look for
this show to be even more exciting and "satisfying." Never the one
to see that dark cloud behind the silver lining, Ms. Hudgins will
have you cheering her every song.
Chelsea Hudgins will be appearing on Wednesday nights at 7:00 pm at
THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438
- http://www.theduplex.com/)
with remaining shows on the 10th, 17th and 24th. I am actually planning
to return - I love the gal, I love the vocals, I love the show! You
will, too!
There will be more cabaret mini-reviews in the next Mid-Week issue
of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE newsletter. I have also been collecting
them for a special section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/
) where I can expand on my comments and include a photo when possible.
I will also be adding several that will not appear in the e-mail CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE issues. I'll let you know when they are posted.

How do you get an item posted in the BREAKING NEWS section of the
CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/
)? Just e-mail me a press release of at least four paragraphs, giving
the complete information on your show, CD release or other cabaret
related event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available.
Please send me complete information - and do not merely e-mail me
a copy of your flier or a reference to a website. With two newsletters
going out a week, I don't have enough time to look these things up,
and often have to simply toss out incomplete items. By the way, I
usually trim quotes from reviews from the press releases I receive
before using the item on my website or in the newsletter, so don't
count them when putting together the four or more paragraphs.
CABARET THIS 'N THAT
"THE JOHNNY MERCER JAMBOREE" CD RELEASED
"The Johnny Mercer Jamboree" has just been released by Original Cast
Records (http://www.originalcastrecords.com/).
"The Johnny Mercer Jamboree" was originally produced as part of the
Chip Deffaa Invitational Theater Festival, and made possible with
support from Chashama (Anita Durst, Artistic Director). That production
was one of the most popular in the Festival. And that's saying plenty,
since in six weeks the festival offered more than 25 different productions,
143 performances in all. This album has four bonus songs, besides
those featured in the show. Copies of the CD may be ordered by sending
$17.45 (postage included) to ORIGINAL CAST RECORDS, Box 496, Georgetown,
CT 06829. Copies may also be ordered by phone at 888-627-3993 or online
using the American Express or Discover Card. The album may be purchased
at such leading stores as Tower, Footlight, and Colony. This is the
first show from the Festival to be recorded. Coming next: "Mad About
the Boy!"
VACCARO IN ANOTHER ONE-NIGHT STAND!
MAC Award Winning (finally) Michael Vaccaro will do another "one-night
stand" when he presents "CHILD OF THE '70s!" on Wednesday, September
24th at 9:30 pm at MAMA ROSE'S (219 Second Avenue, NYC - 212-533-0558
- http://www.mamaroses.net/).
The show is part of a celebration to inaugurate the club's "One-Night
Stand" Series, where a number of cabaret performers are bringing back
old shows that many people didn't get a chance to see the first time
around. Michael's very special guests are Karen Mack, Kari Riely-Swensen
& Scott Coulter. Musical Director is Tracy Stark and the show is directed
by Lennie Watts. There is a $12 cover, 2-drink minimum.

IT'S TIME TO GO - MORE ON MONDAY
Would you believe, I have been working on this letter since 6:00 am
today? I have not even answered my phone. You see, the last newsletter
went out just two days ago and I have been frantically searching for
new items for this issue. But it is 2:30 pm and I have run out of
items, so off it goes into the "world-wide-web." I have actually had
a lot of fun working on this one, and I can't explain why!
I sincerely hope that a lot of you will sign on as CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE members this year. The first year we tried this "membership
thing" we almost hit 300 members, and this past year we passed the
350 member mark (nearly a 20% increase). A similar increase this year
would bring us over 400 members. Personally, I am hoping for more
than 500 members - dare I hope for 1,000? - enabling us to provide
even more services, get around to more cities and even finally be
able to compensate some of the folks who have been writing reviews
and assisting in the website work - and maybe attract more writers
to contribute material, news and reviews.
But most of all, your membership donation is a way for you to encourage
me in my efforts to promote the art of cabaret, and support this newsletter
and the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/
). Your continued support is truly appreciated!
And that is just about the way it was.
