CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE #030908 - Thursday, September 25, 2003
Since 1990 Your First, Best, and Only Complete Source of Cabaret News

If it's anything to do with cabaret, you'll probably read it here first!

This is the "MID-WEEK" CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE. The MONDAY issue includes the regular listings for cabarets around the world, and also has information on all the banner ads running on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website. This "MID-WEEK" issue covers other news, late breaking stories and notes on shows seen plus listings of shows offering discounts to CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE members.

We start this issue with some sad news - Darrell Henline, founder of CABARET SCENES magazine, died late this morning, of cancer, at age 75. He leaves his partner, Dr. Keith Meritz. More details as they become available.

While Mr. Henline and I were not close friends, we shared a love and passion for cabaret and often sat at adjoining tables at cabaret shows and events. We never considered ourselves competitors, but rather partners in promoting the art of cabaret. Cabaret has lost a champion and a friend, and this loss will be felt wherever cabaret is performed and loved.

My sincere condolences, prayers and thoughts go out to Keith, the staff and writers at CABARET SCENES and to Darrel's family and many friends.

"Our goal is to help this historic club get back on its feet and do what it does best, showcase some of the music world's greatest names."

SIRIUS also broadcasts the show "Live From The Bottom Line," to its nationwide subscribers several times a week.

Thanks in part to SIRIUS' commitment, The Bottom Line and its landlord, New York University, agreed today to suspend an eviction proceeding for thirty days while they seek to negotiate a new long-term lease for the club.

CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE MEMBERSHIP REACHES 300!

Last night, at Michael Vaccaro's totally funny "Child of the 60's" show at MAMA ROSE'S (219 Second Avenue, NYC - 212-533-0558 - http://www.mamaroses.net/), Michael's guest star, Scott Coulter, dropped by my table and joined CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE for 2003-2004 and became the 300th member to join since the campaign began on the first of May! Several folks have written to tell me that their membership check was on the way, and hopefully we will reach our goal of 400 members for this year before the end of October - fingers are crossed. Thanks, Scott - and all the folks who have decided to support CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE this year - without your membership donations, and the banner advertising, our complete coverage of the cabaret scene around the world would not be possible.

For information on becoming a contributing member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, check at http://svhamstra.com/Membership.shtml or else just send me a note at membership@svhamstra.com with the single word "membership" in the subject line, and I'll send all the details. You can even send your donation by credit card via PayPal - http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/PayPalPayment.shtml - if you make your donation by check, please make the check payable simply to Stu Hamstra and send to 676A Ninth Avenue #120, New York, NY 10036.

LOOKS LIKE A GREAT YEAR FOR CABARET!

PLUSH ROOM continues under new ownership, BOTTOM LINE saved, MAMA ROSE'S opens, DILLON'S presents cabaret, CHEZ SUZETTE gets a real piano, DON'T TELL MAMA adds third cabaret room, KING KONG ROOM expands cabaret calendar, FIREBIRD CAFE reopens, CHICAGO GALA tickets sold out, venues in Australia move to larger spaces, CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE reaches 300 members - things seem to be on a roll!

I have been receiving the schedules from venues around the country, and it is amazing to see all the exciting offerings this fall. And with several rooms here in NY opening or expanding their cabaret schedules, there real competition among rooms to book the best names they can - and introduce newcomers as well. For example, folks who have not performed in NYC in some time are suddenly showing up on club lists - Margaret Wright at DILLON'S; Karen Mason, Peggy Herman at KING KONG ROOM; Judy Kreston & David Lahm at DANNY'S SKYLIGHT ROOM; Connie Pachl & Bill Daugherty at DON'T TELL MAMA; Kristine Zbornik and Sir Richard Rodney Bennett & Pinky Winters to MAMA ROSE'S; Klea Blackhurst at THE DUPLEX; the list goes on!

LOOKING FOR MORE NEWS

I get plenty of show listings sent me - far more than I can possibly use - it is really difficult trying to choose which ones to run, which ones to keep. Sometimes the item itself makes this choice - I got a listing the other day from someone named Lorri who was doing a show somewhere, but she never gave me her last name - and her e-mail address was not on my list, so I had no clue. The show was in Toronto, but no website was attached, so I gave up. I would love to have more items from outside NYC, especially news items - new venues opening, benefits, etc. Please send complete information - not simply a website link (but be sure to include one if available).

How do you get an item posted in the BREAKING NEWS section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/ )? Just e-mail me a press release of at least four paragraphs, giving the complete information on your show, CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available.

Please send me complete information - and do not merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference to a website. With two newsletters going out a week, I don't have enough time to look these things up, and often have to simply toss out incomplete items. By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from the press releases I receive before using the item on my website or in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the four or more paragraphs.

PLANNING ON RUNNING A BANNER? BETTER PLACE YOUR ORDER A.S.A.P.!

BANNER AD spaces on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website selling our fast for September & October - especially around the time of the October Cabaret Convention here in NYC. In the past few days I have had to turn down four requests for banners because the weeks requested were sold out. Keep in mind, I limit the ads to 20 banners per week, so if you plan to order a banner, reserve your banner space as far in advance as possible. Banner ads are displayed at random in two places on nearly all 2,500+ pages. This means your ad could be seen as many as 3,000 times each day, 21,000 times each week! You can run a banner for 2 weeks on CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE for just $80 - in full color - with a "live link" to your website, if applicable. That's before any member rebates or discounts. In addition, those running banners get mentioned every week in the MONDAY issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE e-mail newsletter (current circulation nearly 2,500) as long as the banner is running.

For information on banner ads, check out the banner information page on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/BannerHere.shtml), or simply send me a note at banners@svhamstra.com with the single word "Banner" in the subject line and I send the details.

SHOWS SEEN

Here are some mini-reviews on shows I had a chance to catch recently.

MARY STOUT AT DON'T TELL MAMA

There are a lot of great singers in NYC, but when it comes to entertainers, the count drops dramatically. Mary Stout is one of that smaller number of folks who know how to put on a show with gusto and pizzazz (count Sidney Myer, Anthony Santelmo, Jr., Gina Caruso, and Phyllis Pastore among that number). It isn't simply musical comedy, we're talking about here, but that refreshing, satisfying tingle you feel at the end of a real entertainer's show. Of course, it helps if the entertainer has good material, and the songs of London's composer Charles Miller, and lyricists Kevin Hammonds and Adam Bard provide just that. Add musical director Stan Tucker and special guest Mark Linn-Baker and you end up with an entertaining and memorable evening. I'm talking about "Mary Sings Miller," which I saw at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/) on Monday, September 22nd. Most of the songs on the list come from theatrical musicals that Mr. Miller has been involved with over the years, but Mark has a way of setting them up that makes them fly on their own. She even takes a break and allows lyricist Kevin Hammonds take the mike to sing one of his songs ("Sweet Young Thang"). Two special-material numbers open the show, written especially for Ms. Stout ("Stout Is Stepping Out" & "If Memory Serves"), and there is even a medley about Broadway, including "Bad Reviews Blues" which Mary introduces by reading a bad review she received (and has had framed). Believe me folks, cabaret doesn't get much better than this!

"Mary Sings Miller" with Mary Stout plays for three more performances at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/), on Mondays, October 13th at 9:00 pm and Monday, November 3rd at 6:00 & 9:00 pm. If you like fun in sort of an updated British Music Hall style - birthplace of the real entertainers of yore - this ones for you.

JOANNA PARSON & LANCE WERTH AT DON'T TELL MAMA

I love good singing. I love good writing. I lover cleverness combined with fun. I loved "Reddy or Not" with Joanna Parson & Lance Werth at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/) which I saw on Tuesday, September 22nd. Imagine two young people, a guy and a gal, unknown to each other, who find in the music of Helen Reddy, comfort and strength in the time of stress. Each decides to write a cabaret show featuring Reddy songs, and through some quirk of fate, and a mistake in the booking calendar, discover, as the lights come on in the cabaret room, that they have been assigned the same cabaret room, on the same night, and at the same time. This is not the only off-the-wall coincidence that happens in this delightfully funny show, but it is the only one I'm going to reveal here. With more plot twists than a LAW & ORDER episode (I just had to slip that line in somewhere), Joanna and Jason present a funny and clever show that had me weeping from laughter. Even those lines that were perfectly predictable had me falling off my seat! Both performers are cute and talented - and just slightly quirky, which adds to the fun of the show. Direction is by Joe McDonnell (Urinetown - Fringe Festival 2000) and musical direction is by the often underrated Barbara Anselmi.

"Reddy or Not" with Joanna Parson & Lance Werth continues at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/) with shows on Tuesday, September 30th at 6:00 pm and Thursday, October 9th, 16th & 30th at 9:00 pm. With that many additional chances to see this one, I'm going to see it again. If you need an hour of fun, here is a brilliant show that will keep you smiling all week.

JERRY CHRISTAKOS AT ROSE'S TURN

Jerry Christakos is perhaps best known to cabaret audiences as one of the LOVELY gals - the taller one. "Lounge act" is best known to cabaret audiences as something we loath. Well, Mr. Christakos has grown a moustache, donned a leather jacket and tight black pants, loosened his bow tie, and written the lounge acts of all lounge acts: "Cesar Borgota." When I saw it on Sunday, September 21st at UPSTAIRS AT ROSE'S TURN (55 Grove Street, NYC - 1-212-366-5438 - http://www.rosesturn.com/) I could not contain my enthusiasm or laughter. I'm supposed to be reviewing the show, and should maintain the proper decorum and seriousness in my work. Impossible! I actually found myself cheering 'Cesar' on, as he committed every possible forbidden cabaret act in his performance. He flirted with the gals in the front row, dangling a cigarette from his lips most of the night, preened and strutted, held an incredible long note that made no sense except to show off, and even made a leer or two. How amazing musical director John McMann could keep from laughing escapes me. Interrupted a few times by phone calls from his agent, his girlfriend and his manager, Jerry swaggers through setback after setback as his "career" goes down the drain in front of your very eyes. One of his big numbers, "This Could Be The Start of Something Big," is an anthem of irony, as Jerry adds chapter after chapter to his very own "History of Ick." He maintains his unbounded faith in himself as he sings "Poor Everybody Else," as the world crumbles under him. But no need to cry for 'Cesar," as there are always more lounges to play, more rooms to sing in.

Jerry Christakos' "Cesar Borgota" show has just one more date at UPSTAIRS AT ROSE'S TURN (55 Grove Street, NYC - 1-212-366-5438 - http://www.rosesturn.com/), on Sunday, September 28th at 7:00 pm. If you want a lesson in how to avoid having your show called "lounge act," see this show and see what not to do.

CAROL MCCANN AT DON'T TELL MAMA

After three years of silence, Carol McCann has returned to cabaret with that same laid-back, down-home style for which she is known and loved. I caught her show "In My Garden" at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/) on Tuesday, September 23rd, and once again renewed my membership in the "I Love Carol" club. Like the cool gentle breezes that occasionally drift down to the city from the Catskill Mountains, Carol & Co. breezed into the cabaret room with a bouquet of songs and stories from her garden upstate. Backed by a smoothly country-style band with multi-talented John Di Pinto at the piano, Jay Thomas on guitar and Bill Holcomb on bass, Ms. McCann treated us to a song set of mainly her own songs plus a few covers. A talented duo of back-up singers (Mary Foster Conklin & Darius Nichols) accompanied Ms. McCann, but everything was so well done, so smoothly performed, the entire company seemed as one - and that's exactly the way it is supposed to be. And with all that talent on stage, Ms. McCann added a new talent to the show, her daughter Julie. Now a child on the stage - especially a relative - most especially a daughter - sort of scares me. I have seen perfectly great shows ruined by such an action. But this little gal can sing - she can sing gloriously! She did a duet with her mom (Weak Bird Fly) to perfection - I mean on the lyric, on the key. A special tribute song to NYC (Ms. McCann, in spite of her clean, wholesome, country-girl looks, is originally from NYC) called "Granite Lady" would make a great addition to any show with a "Big Apple" theme (Steve Ross, are you reading this?). The hour slipped by too quickly, and I know everyone in the room would have stayed for a dozen or so additional songs, but Ms. McCall obeyed the cardinal rule of cabaret: always leave when they want for more - that way they'll come back again. I'll be back.

Carol McCann has two more shows at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/), on Tuesdays, September 30th & October 7th, both shows at 9:30 pm. I don't know if Carol McCann will make us wait three more years for her next cabaret outing, but just in case, try to make it to at least one of these shows.

There will be more cabaret mini-reviews in the next Mid-Week issue of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE newsletter.

MORE NEWS & LISTINGS ON MONDAY

I sincerely hope that you will sign on as CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE members this year. The more members we get, the more services we can offer on the website and in the newsletter. Your membership donation will also make it possible to get around to more cities and maybe even finally be able to compensate some of the folks who have been writing reviews and assisting in the website work - and maybe attract more writers to contribute material, news and reviews. And more members will ultimately mean more shows that offer discounts to our members - making every membership more valuable.

But most of all, your membership donation is a way for you to encourage me in my efforts to promote the art of cabaret, and support this newsletter and the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/ ). Your continued support is truly appreciated!

And that is just about the way it was.

Hugs & Stuff,
