CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE #030908 - Thursday, October 2, 2003
Since 1990 Your First, Best, and Only Complete Source of Cabaret News

If it's anything to do with cabaret, you'll probably read it here first!

This is the "MID-WEEK" CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE. The MONDAY issue includes the regular listings for cabarets around the world, and also has information on all the banner ads running on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website. This "MID-WEEK" issue covers other news, late breaking stories and notes on shows seen plus listings of shows offering discounts to CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE members.

The cool weather has arrived - the temperatures aren't expected to break 70 degrees (f) for the next few days, and tonight they are expecting frost in parts of the area. But this is great weather to go to cabaret, and I have a full schedule for the next few days. How I am going to catch all the great shows this month has become a puzzle - I have my October Calendar with me at all times, along with cabaret schedules, and am constantly juggling dates and times, trying to get everything covered without a lot of transportation difficulties. First, we start with some important news items.

IN THE NEWS

HENLINE MEMORIAL SET

A Memorial Service for Darrell Henline will be held on Friday, October 17th at 6:30 pm at ST. THOMAS CHURCH (Fifth Avenue at 53rd Street, NYC - http://www.saintthomaschurch.org/). Mr. Henline passed away on Thursday, October 25th, after a long bout with cancer. Mr. Henline was founder of CABARET SCENES magazine.

CONGRATS TO THE TEXAS-BOUND GASHOLE DUO

Karen Mack and Michael Holland are the honored recipients of a 2003 Horizon Award from the Austin Cabaret Theatre in Austin, Texas. The pair are in Texas to perform "Gashole Retrospectacular 70s/80s Mix" on Friday & Saturday, October 3rd & 4th at the historic SCOTTISH RITE THEATRE (18th & Lavaca, Austin, TX - 512-453-2287). The new cocktail is still in development.

Singer/Actress Eileen Fulton is headed for New England and will performing a Benefit Concert for the AIDS Response - Seacoast group at THE MUSIC HALL (28 Chestnut Street, Portsmouth, NH - 603-436-2400 - http://www.themusichall.org/) on Thursday, October 30th at 8:00 pm. It is the theater's 125th Anniversary Jubilee. Her show is titled "EVENING WITH A DIVA." Eileen will be appearing at THE CABARET at Odette's (South River Road, New Hope, PA - 215-862-3000 - http://www.odettes.com/) with a Thanksgiving weekend show on Friday through Sunday, November 28th, 29th & 30th.

The Cabaret Package includes accommodation and breakfast, wine and hors d'oeuvre on Friday and Saturday night, champagne brunch at the BEACONLIGHT on Sunday morning and admission to all performances. PEGGY HERMAN AT KING KONG ROOM - ONE NIGHT ONLY - NO COVER

Internationally acclaimed singer Peggy Herman returns to the Manhattan club scene on Saturday, October 4th from 8:00 to 10:00 pm in a very special one-night-only appearance at Manhattan's chic KING KONG ROOM at the Supper Club (240 West 47th Street, NYC - 1-212-921-1904 - http://www.KingKongRoom.com/). Peggy will celebrate the release of her brand new CD, "Mercer and more...". Peggy will be accompanied by her musical director Alex Rybeck on piano, Jared Egan on bass. There will be complimentary hors d'eurves and a cash bar. Reservations are strongly advised.

ANOTHER NEW PIANO - THIS TIME IN BOSTON

One of my favorite places to hang out whenever I visit Boston is THE ENCORE LOUNGE in the Tremont Hotel (275 Tremont Street, Boston, MA - 617-426-1400) - perhaps because I usually stay at the Tremont Hotel - in the heart of the theater-club district. Well, following the lead of CHEZ SUZETTE in NYC, the room has just installed a new piano - and it will get its first workout tonight, October 2nd with Doug Hammer at the keys and the lovely Mary Callanan at the mike. The fun starts at 9:30 pm and continues until 1:00 am - and there is no cover. Many of the performers from musicals playing in Boston drop by for a drink and a chance at the open mike - and a lot of regular Boston cabaret performers can be found there as well.

NEW "LEADING MEN" COLUMN AT PLAYBILL.COM

Wayman Wong has a new "The Leading Men" column at Playbill.com. In this October article, Wayman interviews the Tony-winning actor Jarrod Emick, who reveals what it's like working with superstar Hugh Jackman in the Peter Allen musical "The Boy From Oz." Also featured: John Pizzarelli, who headlines the "Sinatra" extravaganza, co-starring the Rockettes, at Radio City Music Hall, and Welly Yang, the producer and star of "The Wedding Banquet," a new musical based on Ang Lee's Oscar-nominated movie. You can read it all at http://www.playbill.com/news/article/81918.html

BETH VALENTI IN FAREWELL SHOW AT MAMA'S

Beth Valenti will soon be moving from New Jersey to Florida, but before she leaves, she will be appearing at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/) for two shows - on Saturdays, October 11th & 18th at 7:00 pm. Ms. Valenti is working, once again, with musical director Dick Gallagher, and director Jay Rogers. The show has evolved, and this year Frank Wagner on bass will be added to bring a new dimension to the music. There will be a $12 cover charge, 2-drink minimum. Here's a change for NYC cabaret lovers to give the gal a great send-off by catching this show.

I'M LOOKING FOR EVEN MORE NEWS

I get plenty of show listings sent me - far more than I can possibly use - it is really difficult trying to choose which ones to run, which ones to set aside. Sometimes the item itself makes this choice - incomplete information or just a scan of a flier, neither of which is useful to me. I would love to have more items from outside NYC, especially NEWS items - new venues opening, benefits, CD Releases, celebrations, etc. Add a website link if available.

CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE MEMBERSHIP PASSES 300 MARK!

We surpassed the 300 Member mark and are now headed for our goal of 400 members. I just mailed out another 18 membership cards last night. Several folks have added an additional sum to their membership donations to cover membership costs for those unable to afford to join at this time. If you would like to be a member, but are experiencing financial problems at this time, drop me a note - I have 3 memberships to give away at the current time. Your "free" SILVER membership will allow you to deduct $20 from your first banner ad in a membership year, allow you to have your CD listed in the CD SALE section, get discounts on cabaret shows and other events where offered, and get a listing on the appropriate SILVER MEMBER page.

It has to be first-come, first-served, so let me know right away if you feel you need to take advantage of this offer. All will be in confidence - the persons making the donations do not even wish to know your name. And if, later this membership year, you can afford the membership, you can make the donation to make it possible for us to offer someone else a free membership.

For information on becoming a contributing member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, check at http://svhamstra.com/Membership.shtml or else just send me a note at membership@svhamstra.com with the single word "membership" in the subject line, and I'll send all the details. How do you get an item posted in the BREAKING NEWS section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/ )? Just e-mail me a press release of at least four paragraphs, giving the complete information on your show, CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available.

Please send me complete information - and do not merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference to a website. With two newsletters going out a week, I don't have enough time to look these things up, and often have to simply toss out incomplete items. By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from the press releases I receive before using the item on my website or in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the four or more paragraphs.

OCTOBER BANNER SLOTS SOLD OUT - NOVEMBER SLOTS SELLING FAST

BANNER AD spaces on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website are just about sold out for October - I have one slot open each week except for the week of October 19th - the week of the Cabaret Convention here in NYC. Keep in mind, I limit the ads to 20 banners per week, so if you plan to order a banner, reserve your banner space as far in advance as possible. A lot of folks want to start advertising their CDs for holiday sales in November, so don't delay getting your order in.

Banner ads are displayed at random in two places on nearly all 2,500+ pages. This means your ad could be seen as many as 3,000 times each day, 21,000 times each week! You can run a banner for 2 weeks on CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE for just $80 - in full color - with a "live link" to your website, if applicable. That's before any member rebates or discounts. In addition, those running banners get mentioned every week in the MONDAY issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE e-mail newsletter (current circulation nearly 2,500) as long as the banner is running.

For information on banner ads, check out the banner information page on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/BannerHere.shtml), or simply send me a note at banners@svhamstra.com with the single word "Banner" in the subject line and I send the details.

Longtime songstress Barbara Lowin is appearing currently at DANNY'S SKYLIGHT ROOM (342 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-265-8133 - http://www.dannysgrandseapalace.com/) in a performance that epitomizes grace and beauty. Her show, "Everything I Love" is a simple show, yet virtually overwhelms with elegance and charm. She and her musical director, along with director Scott Barnes, have chosen a variety of songs of different styles and Ms. Lowin performs them as though they were written just for her to sing at this point in her life. Her patter is witty, yet light and breezy - totally personalizing each song she introduced. Opening with "Love Isn't Born, It's Made" (Schwartz/Loesser), she smoothly moved to "Show Me" from MY FAIR LADY (Loewe/Lerner). Her audience was entranced by the feeling she put into each lyric. Ms. Lowin shared the range of her life experiences with songs in German, French and Russian - yet never lost touch with her mainly English-speaking audience. "In Buddy's Eyes" from FOLLIES was especially poignant. Other standout songs were the classic standard "Skylark" and the classic cabaret song "Museum" (Fieger/Blumenthal). Ms. Lowin has chosen her material wisely, not putting too much stress on her vocals, and admitting here and there that a particular note here and there was a challenge. As a voice teacher herself, she never pushed beyond her range.

You have just one more chance to catch this marvelous lady and this marvelous show - on Sunday, October 5th at 8:45 pm at DANNY'S SKYLIGHT ROOM (342 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-265-8133 - http://www.dannysgrandseapalace.com/). The music charge is $15 with a $10 food/drink minimum. (CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE $5 DISCOUNT AVAILABLE). JULIE & IRENE AT DON'T TELL MAMA

I spoke of entertainers in a review of Mary Stout's show a while back, and listed a few of these marvelous folks that came. Well, add two more to that list - Julie Sheppard and Irene Soderberg. I saw their show last night at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/) and marvelled at the talent that these California-based singers revealed. Long-time NYC cabaret-goers will remember Ms. Sheppard for her "Julie, Julie, Julie" show, a Judy Garland-themed cabaret act that last appeared in NYC 17 years ago - and won a MAC award. She later relocated to the LA area. (Ms. Sheppard will reprise that show for one time only on this Saturday night, October 4th at 8:00 pm at MAMA'S.) With Ricky Ritzel at the piano, Julie & Irene presented an hour of great singing, clever "ad-libs" and plenty of fun as they took turns on stage, and even sang a few duets. Ms. Soderberg did an amazing Ethel Merman tribute medley, and Ms. Sheppard gave a medley-sample of her Judy Garland show. With never a dull moment, and lots of sassy belting, the show had everyone in the room applauding and laughing - totally entertained by two of the best in the business. Both gals have mellowed a bit since their last appearances in NYC, and there were moments of poignancy and heart as well. There were delightful song parodies, and even a few songs totally unfamiliar to me - and very funny ones at that!

You have just a few chances to catch this dynamic duo before they fly back to California - tonight, Thursday, October 2nd, and tomorrow night, Friday, October 3rd - both shows at 8:00 pm at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/). There is a $15 cover, 2-drink minimum (CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE $5 DISCOUNT AVAILABLE). The ghosts of Judy Garland, Sophie Tucker, Ethel Merman, and other great entertainers of the past were dancing in the shadows during this show. Don't miss this one!
